Chevalier Vert

Olympic Orchids is a Washington state niche house based in a Seattle suburb about 15 miles from where I live—and I only recently ordered one of their discovery box sets. Of the 16 samples, I like or love about six....which I think is a high number. My first purchase will be this perfume, Chevalier Vert. I consider myself a “green” fan. A walk through a garden or orchard is something I want to experience on a regular basis: Beach Hut Man, Annick Goutal's Nuit Etoile and Ninfeo Mio to watery, thinner interpretations in Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca and one of my all time favorites, Balenciaga’s L’Essence. Notes like violet, tomato and fig leaf, galbanum, mint, ivy, and angelica are all loved by me. If Beach Hut Man is the King of masculine green scents, then Chevalier Vert is the Queen of feminine green scents with the best dominant rhubarb note that I’ve ever smelled (although I consider both unisex). CV opens with a uber strong tomato leaf and rhubarb, morphs 20 minutes later into a beautiful, bitter, aromatic galbanum with violet leaf — I pick them up in the same order as voted above. Those initial notes never leave the garden party. Only after several hours do I detect a small amount of wood. Is it a masterpiece? In my opinion, yes. There are lots of green scents out there, but none like this one. I’m in “Green” heaven. If you are a green fan, this must be on your list to try.

I learned recently, because of this perfume and one other (OG Aura by Mugler)- that I LOVE rhubarb in perfume! If you have tried a rhubarb perfume before and liked it, this is probably going to impress you. I do however have a fragrance friend who HATES rhubarb, so he can't stand this one. Its Green without being fresh, and yes, it does seem to have a bit of a "stinky" vibe at times. I would wear it in winter so as not to overwhelm people. However, it is quickly becoming a favorite of mine! Polarizing for sure, DO NOT BLIND BUY, get a sample! But I am myself going to get a full-size soon. (The 5ml for $18 is a great deal, but I need more!) Grassy, a bit musky, a bit woody, and yeah a bit weed-y. I don't know exactly why it makes my brain go "WOW" every time I smell it, but because I also love Aura by Mugler so much, I must deduce it's the strong rhubarb in this that has me head-over heels. I recommend it, but please, only a sample to test!

I agree with TheFragrantPrince. "Painfully beautiful". I am getting obsessed with this perfume and i have to get a whole bottle. I seriously feel it is going to be my signature scent. Green , sharp, deep, dangerous, odd, sexy, intoxicating. It reminds me of my childhood garden - now destroyed. Full of weeds, wet soil, rhubarb. For me this scent is the essence of Spring, the essence of vegetal life. Green blood. For anyone who loved to climb trees, to get one's hands dirty, who used to eat flower heads (violets in my case). It is so touching I want to cry when i smell it. Like overwhelming power of Nature. Uncompromising, powerful, dangerous, soothing, full of hope and thrills.

You have to know how to recognize a masterpiece when you meet one. A unique and never smelled blend, a magnificent opening, an enchanting evolution, a perfect sillage and finally the irresistible urge to return in the perfume every hour and every day. Ellen Covey opened the doors of an enchanted garden in a forgotten monastery. A garden now becoming wild where grew rhubarb, citrus fruits, tomatoes but also flowers such as iris, violet, ... the general effect is encompassing, we plunge into an intense green but relaxing light with a very nostalgic side. A memory of childhood that is likely to escape at any time and that must be kept preciously. To discover absolutely!

I am really a fan of this scent- the tomato leaf is the most salient scent for me. It is exactly the smell of going into a vegetable garden in the springtime- so much green and vibrant vegetation. The downside to this scent is that others have told me it smells strongly of weed. While I don’t get that at all, it was a rude awakening to have a coworker in my old office ask me if I “smelled weed” in my cubicle, and I’m not sure they would have bought that it was my perfume, so be aware of where you wear this scent and maybe save it for the weekend in case someone gets the wrong idea.

I was surprised to hear so many people experienced an overpowering weed note. I can maybe detect a hint of it in the drydown, but to me this scent is all about the tomato leaf with some rhubarb and violet supporting it. It's definitely quite an unusual scent, and agree that it's maybe not best for everyday wear, but I love the vegetale quality. To me it perfectly matches its name, conjuring up the world of Arthurian legend. Smelling this I can imagine Sir Gawain riding into a creepy, vine covered forest to challenge the eerie Green Knight.

A potent, wonderfully green scent. A herbal, spring masterpiece. The tartness and aromatic herbs are beautifully balanced against a natural sweetness. I've wanted an artemisia, tomato and rhubarb scent for ages and I've found it. This one I can share with my fella. I nearly shelled out for Aedes de Venustas but this is better. Great longevity and sillage which quite extraordinary considering the notes in this.

If fine art paintings of springtime vegetable gardens had a scent, I'm sure this would be it. Bitter, sour, crisp, and very green. Also very unusual, but the same could be said about pretty much every fragrance I've tried from this house. Like many of their scents, it's more interesting than wearable. It's olfactory art, and as another member described, painfully beautiful and evocative.

i have definitely had ppl tell me i smell like weed when ive worn this--it does have the kind of sharp sour green citrusy spicy smell that a strong boutique weed can have when you open up the bag, but it doesnt smell like weed *smoke*, or it doesnt linger to me like weed does. to me its straight sour rhubarb, maybe kind of grassy fresh, spicier as time passes. love this one

I made an account to vote for this! I am in love with this. It's bright without being childish or loud, it's modern with being cold. It gives end of Spring, beginning of Summer vibes. I truly adore it! Bought a sample, definitely buying a full bottle!

Really beautiful and green, almost aquatic. A summer day spent at the pool in my neighbor’s heavily planted backyard in the woods. My dad described it as “stepping out of the shower” Another great, unique fragrance from Olympic Orchids

This smells natural and refreshing, very vegetal and green fresh scent. On my skins I'm getting rhubarb and bitter tomato leaf upfront with a hint of citruses, this smells almost like Vele by Tiziana Terenzi and Un Jardin sur le Nil.

A true vert scent without sweetness. J'adore! I want this in a full size.

This truly has a fascinatingly unique juicy, green start. As it dries down the warmth comes through, mostly driven by the slightly peppery and woody notes. I enjoy the balance of greens here, it's not overwhelmingly violet or tomato leaf or rhubarb or herbal, but more a proportionate balance between them all. I am firmly not a violet and or orris fan, because powdery is never my vibe. But I get zero powder from this, only dry woods with hints of peppery greens and floral notes. It is quite makeupey, later on, but not overwhelmingly so. It doesn't seem to have fabulous laughing power on me, so it's not going to be a bottle buy. I personally have green/aromatic fragrances that I like a lot more, that are stronger and would make it through the entire day. But I would recommend folks who like a slight makeup scent, but don't want overwhelming powder, to give this a try.

Chevalier Vert is a curious green scent. I get rhubarb and definitely the tomato leaf; smells bitter, tart, very vegetal and natural. There's a floral, metallic vibe to this as well. All very interesting. CV is unisex for the spring and summer. Not the most work appropriate but not terrible and not very sexy to me. Hard to judge from a dauber but performance seemed good. Only lasted four hours before going soft. Hopefully this has better longevity sprayed. A very intriguing scent using some uncommon, arguably weird notes. Not exactly something that I want to smell like though. I think the violet leaf is a little too sharp for me. That metallic aspect is almost headache inducing. Like all Olympic Orchid perfumes it is expensive but note quality is excellent and performance is good. I don't care for this one but definitely worth a test if it piques your interest.

A really pleasant and unique one. Before I looked at the notes I knew this had wormwood and rhubarb as they pop very noticeably at the start both creamy green and fresh green smashing together. As things dry a bit the tomato leaf and violet come through giving a bit of a fresh grass element, then citrus and light floral mixing in to give a bergamot tea kind of thing. Then the further in the dry down you go, the more a spicy smoky woody comes through lending more body to it all. Its less uplifting at that point and starts to feel a little cannabis like, but not so much as to smell like you have been in a smoke house. I see where people who have voted for vis et armis are coming from there. Really great balance between green and fresh and dark and smoky here, worth a pickup imho both for scent and for discovery.

Like others, my first impression was that of extremely dank, sticky cannabis. I opened my little Olympic Orchids sample haul and was hit by it immediately, as was my girlfriend who asked if I'd just mail-ordered weed. But I've now worn it for the day (which hit a high of 75o) and upon re-applying in the evening I can pick out more notes. The culprit for the pot note seems to be the rhubarb, which I've heard is often a "gasoline" note, mixing with the mugwort, and made sour by the citrus, spicy with the sichuan pepper. But the tomato leaf is lovely, and the florals and woodsy notes are what elevate it to a more complex scent for me. I'm not sure this is something I could wear regularly, but since I am working from home, I plan to fully enjoy wearing the sample for a few days!

Have to preface my positive review with the fact after I applied this fragrance that my DH asked me if I had just colored my hair! (He said swap it.) ;) I, on the other hand, enjoy Chevalier Vert very much. It is truly the most realistic Tomato plant note I've ever found. I'm a tomato loving gal, and this scent makes me think of being out in the garden, tending my plants on a sunny morning. I pick up the rhubarb and citrus, as well. Almost no floral here, to me. I really like it, and it lasts well. If you enjoy herbal scents, give it a try! Think I'm going to use Chevalier Vert as a base, and spray a bit of "Yves Saint Laurent In Love Again" over it to up the "pretty" factor... maybe DH will change his mind about it. :)

This frag is the smell of your gardening gloves after ripping out weeds, rhubarb and last years tomato plants and then planting fresh and pre grown irises, morning glory and lilacs. It doesn't smell bad, but it doesn't smell good either. It just smells like those gloves. It is odd and it is crazy that Ms Covey packed that smell into a drop of liquid. After writing the above, I scrolled up and read the other reviews. I agree with them all! Even the bad ones! I decided to layer on a spray of Blackbird and it is amazing!

For the people complaining of a weed smell, I am convinced there are batch variations or they do not know what weed smells like in an intimate way. I get none of that here, these greens reverberate through the air like a gong, coming together fluidly but not quite cleanly. There is a dirtiness here that lends a lot to the atmosphere. I think this is fine for daily wear if you have the confidence.

This to me smells green, like freshly mowed grass, limes, forest shrubs, and a freshly watered garden. I dont normally like scents like this but I think its absolutely beautiful. It can be a bit too much but in a good way, makes people turn their heads trying to smell more. Very unique, it lasts long on my skin, and projects very well.

Green tomato leaf, rhubarb, citron, dry wood, floral powder. I've smelt my fair share of cannabis, and this doesn't smell quite like cannabis to me, it smells like tomato and rhubarb plants. It's pleasant and natural, but not too pretty. Reminded me a bit of Hamsa by the same house, the green, citrus and wood.

Drinking Chai tea next to your flower bouquet in the jungle. This is really unique!! I'm surprised that I find a lot of cinnamon here as it's completely absent from the notes list. Somehow the Rhubarb, Wormwood, Sichuan Pepper and Violet Leaf come together to create spicy Chai tea (heavy on the cinnamon). It's very smooth (almost as if someone added some milk to it. A latte!). This perfume is definitely more "Soft Spicy" than "Fresh Spicy". Over this tea there's a strong vegetable green trail? I like how these notes combine to create something unique but the greenness here is very raw and aggressive which sort of ruins this for me. As this settles the Peony and Violet pop out a lot more and they're soft and enveloping which is lovely. I love how weird this is and artistic this is, but I wish the green notes weren't so bold (eggs on my face though. I didn't know what Vert meant prior to smelling this haha).

It's sour, loud, and oh so green. Not sweet, but kind of wet, or maybe sappy. The tomato leaf is amped up and bolstered by the rhubarb to the point where you have to focus to pick out the other notes at first. I love green smells, so I like it, but it's not wearable for many occasions, and honestly I usually just put it on before I tend to my garden. Makes me feel like I fit in...

Woah there. Deep green is one thing but olfactory eco-terrorism is something else. This is *serious* green - so aggressively vegetal that the notes listed here make sense now, but smelling it blind I just had the following thoughts, in this order: - OMG who managed to distil a kilo of highly stinky resinous fresh weed into half a drop of clear liquid? - No wait, it's the other sort of grass. Two lawnmowers' worth of just-mown lawn clippings in a great pillowy heap. - which someone's just doused in petrol. - and drenched in really really bitter galbanum. Wrong on all counts then - the bitterness (really prominent) was obviously wormwood, the 'weediness' some kind of collision of orris +tomato leaf +florals and the petrol effect from the rhubarb. Sadly none of the sweeter or more moderating influence of the citrus or orris or violets came through on me, the ranker notes were trampling them into the mud. Somehow I don't think the overall effect on me was what its creator(s) had in mind. BUT even still ... it may not read like it, but I do admire this - it's skilful, it's complex and (like all the astonishing Olympic Orchids range I'm trying so far) it absolutely reeks of real nature. It has knockout performance and total integrity. It is what it is, no apologies. I'm a bit of a a jungle lover myself and really like many 'fumes which make you smell of forest and camping and plants. And the more green scents I try the more I realise I can deal with some of them, if carefully handled. This one's straight out of the woods and and a total organic powerhouse. But in this case it's just too rough a forest floor for comfort. It is just *TOO* GREEN for me dammit! Unisex to masculine imho (but any serious green-lover will rate it), projection and longevity both respectable-to-strong. Shame my chemistry does not work well with it, but if hyper-real crushed leaves and peppery, aromatic, rugged sap are your thing, go run into these woods with this Green Man / Knight guy - you won't be disappointed.

Chevalier Vert (Green Knight) is indeed brightly green and vegetal. It sparkles for a moment with citrus and then it’s all tomato leaf, literally a raw-vegetable chlorophyll-y smell. I keep getting touches of something bright and fruity-fresh – the rhubarb? but mostly it’s that dense, tough tomato leaf. It smells slightly “wrong” – it’s not one of the usual “fresh leafy green” perfumery notes. It smells like a real vegetable garden in the hot sun; you’re knee-deep in weeds and your pants are stained. An hour in it goes very soft and is just dusty woods and a barely-there, chilly smoothness from iris. I like this kind of cool, clean, white vibe, but it’s almost too delicate for me to smell. (L'Homme du Coeur comes to mind as a similar, but louder and more legible, example of this pearly-white scent type.) I love my greens, but Chevalier Vert is a pass for me. The vegetal opening is quite harsh and weird to my taste, and the whole thing disappears very quickly. Even for hardcore tomato-leaf lovers (I know you’re out there) there are better options IMO – Corsica Furiosa is aggro, sun-drenched tomato leaf fading slowly into golden hay, while Stones is tomato leaf balanced with darker mossy-earth notes. Both manage to fuse the tomato leaf with longer-lasting basenotes to make the effect last longer, while the Chevalier just vanishes and is replaced by an unrelated, ultra-faint scent.

I was recommended this as something to try after Olmstead & Vaux by Phlur was discontinued. They are not comparable whatsoever. That aside I still tried to love it since I’m hunting for a replacement, but I don’t have anything nice to say. When your SO scrunches their face and says “oh no what’s that smell” it’s not a good sign. Cacophony of greens that don’t compliment each other with a lingering soured sweetness. I don’t disagree with others’ descriptions but I was looking for a manicured garden at tea time and this is more like vegetable garden trimmings next to the kitchen compost.

I don't know if I have a weird palette or a strong batch because this smells like a sickly, pungent, rancid, sour, and harshly chemical marijuana odor (definitely not the good stuff). This set off my gag reflex, and I didn't even apply very much of it. Had to shower it off, and even then it interfered with my ability to sleep that evening. Edit (03/20/2025): Have worn my sample (in sparse amounts) a few more times and found it to be more tolerable. Pungent green, almost citrusy. Still not my vibe at all, but not horrible either. 4/10

This is the first scent that I found truly repugnant. I dont get it, I love green scents but this one seemed foul. All I got was very strong Yarrow. A very bitter medicinal smell mixed with burning rubber. ⛤

Green gasoline on tomato leaf,both floating on a base of stale almond oil.. hmmm...and then,Citrus. Yes it's as bad as it sounds.

I was so hopeful about Chevalier Vert. Everything about it seemed perfect on paper. Tomato leaf is one of my all time favorite notes as are wormwood and rhubarb but...ho hum. There is way too much going on here, I can totally see how this can read like a heavy unpleasant cannabis. The tomato leaf is totally overwhelmed by the citrus and violet. It comes off as muddy and indecisive and reads to my nose like a white blood cell and bleach scent, like when you scrape your skin, breaking only the first layer and have a sticky weeping sore. I wore one spray of this to work. A coworker came into my office and was pacing around insisting that someone must have just used strong cleaning solution in here. I didn't have the heart to tell her it was me. Ellen, if you're reading this, and I know you are. STOP reading your own reviews! <3

Very strong tomato leaf and rhubarb. I love tomato leaf but this is a bazaar combo. I'm maybe getting a bit of citrus but I definitely don't smell any other notes. It's not well balanced or blended at all. There's a lot of hype about this house and so far I'm really underwhelmed.

245 This is terrible funkiness and does smell of weed. I get no rhubarb nor citruses. It's harsh smelling(like some kind of chemical), not green, not tart. Disappointed... 0/10-Would not repurchase.

If you want to smell like a teenage weed dealer than this is the sent for you. Reeks of pot and the customer service was beyond rude.

Better than both PdE Corsica Furiosa and Sidley Eau de Campagne. A truly top-tier photorealistic garden fragrance. I found Corsica Furiosa to be quite disjointed, as tomato leaf suggests to me some sort of garden fantasy, which is disrupted entirely by that dry, agrestic hay note. I found Eau de Campagne to be a bit too sterile and proper. Chevalier Vert really sells the overgrown veggie patch kind of imagery, which was what I am looking for in a green tomato leaf type of scent. It is a wall of green, a nonsensical mishmash of bitter, herbal, chlorophyll-laden wet leaves. A Italian skewed backyard herb garden, with heirloom tomatoes, thyme, oregano, basil plants, left unkempt and let overgrown with weeds. Very convincing. None of these scents are particularly wearable, but this one is very worth sampling just for the experience.

This is a remarkable fragrance. It's so realistic it flips back around and becomes post-modern. It smells like GREEN, an intense earthy vegetal green. On me, there's something a little rank lurking in the greenery. For the short period that this funky note was most PUNGENT, it smelled like a garden pixie's BO? Not exactly bad, but very raw and primal, if a kitchen garden could be raw and primal. This is really art. I wish there was more of a culture and economy around art fragrances. I don't really want to smell like this, but I'm blown away by it. I'm excited to try more from Dr Covey, and I hope that there is at least one in her line that is both this remarkable but also wearable on me.

This starts harsh with tomato leaf, rhubarb, violet leaf, and a good amount of citrus. I sprayed this while my boyfriend was out and when he came home he thought the house smelled like motor oil until I started listing ingredients and he recognized the rhubarb. The scent does mellow some as it settles and the other notes play peek a boo-- at times blending in and at times being identifiable. Despite the intensity it's actually a pretty pleasant garden scent that has impressive realness and longevity.

Y'all, it does smell like weed and cut grass. But! It's the freshest, spiciest weed you've smelled! I am not a fan of the smell of weed, but I do enjoy this fragrance as a lover of greens. As a brave soul that has worn original Poison to the office, I'm not sure my panties are big enough for Chevalier Vert.

Something very strange and unpleasant under this. Could it be the wormwood? I enjoy the tomato plant and tiny hint of citrus, but it’s a punchy bitterness that reminds me of the character of gasoline or some gross industrial lubricant. All this to say, this stinks! I see where people are getting weed.

Smells like straight up marijuana, and it's really strong. I don't hate the scent of pot, but I don't exactly want to waft clouds of it at my kid's PTA meetings or in the office. And I'm not the only one who noticed. I put it on, and my husband immediately said "what smells like pot??"

When I put my tester on in the car, after a few minutes I got an odd whiff and thought one of the dogs had peed in the backseat.... Very tart, very umptuous tomato leaf. I was intrigued at first but ultimately found it unwearable.

The rhubarb and tomato leaf together give the strong impression of hibiscus tea. Creative, and not really unpleasant, but not my favorite.
