Horizon

A fragrance that doesn't get enough attention, from a house that doesn't get enough attention either. This house is built fundamentally upon vintage fragrances and re-releasing them for the 21st century. Now, who knows how much they change from the original formulas, but there is undoubtedly an old-world feel to the fragrances and packaging. Horizon is a fantastic patchouli-based fragrance. Upon spray you are hit with a powerful, mentholated patchouli that stays lonesome for a while until a couple of minutes in, then all of the other notes start to come out. This is a different ambered-patchouli, the amber qualities are almost powdery thanks to the "cocoa roasted almonds", versus an overly sweetened vanilla. If you like sweet patchouli fragrances but found ones like Patchouli Leaves from Montale too much, this would be a good middle-ground. As the fragrance dries down, the vanilla does become more noticeable but due to the patchouli it maintains a sweetly earthy smell. It is absolutely addicting to smell! This fragrance also lasts on me forever, and I consistently get wafts of it throughout the day with it just being on my arm. This is most normally compared to Borneo 1834, but they are very different. B1834 is not sweet at all, due to utilizing straight cacao and patchouli in a pairing, which gives it a very "dusty" texture. The patchouli in B1834 is also more blunted compared to Horizon, I don't get the earthy, petrichor smell from that one as I do in Horizon. All-in-all, I would say you could own both of them and they still be very different from each other. If you care at all for patchouli, you must at least try this fragrance. It will most likely find its way into your collection like it did mine.

I love this scent profile and have tried numerous fragrances, here is a brief summary of how they compare: OLL Horizon - Sweet, boozy, quite "chocolatey" but not a dark chocolate, and after it dries a bit the patchouli has this punchy quality similar to Psychedelique. Chanel Coromandel - Sophisticated, not very sweet on my skin, smells more mysterious Serge Lutens Borneo 1842 - Very well blended, a slight perfumey quality, smells like wealth and chocolate Jehanne Rigaud Patchouli Premier - My personal favourite, less sweet and more raw/earthy, powdery, mysterious, smells a little ancient in a good way Jovoy Psychedelique - Not as well blended as the SL, Chanel, or OLL but has an airy, mentholated quality and sweetness that gives it great character. Leans most masculine on the list IMO. The punchy quality of patchouli in Psychedelique is the most similar to Horizon. Salvatore Ferragamo Terra Rossa - Sweetest, most approachable patchouli on this list, it's like Horizon/Coromandel/Borneo 1842 but mass appealing. Cartier L'Heure Mysterieuse XII - I can kind of see why people would say they're similar, but they don't smell the same. The vibe is the same, but L'HMXII is like a smooth Lindt ball without any obvious patchouli smell. Dana Tabu / Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur - Nah, not at all. No similarity. I'd say Psychedelique is closest to Horizon, but the difference is that Psychedelique has this aerated/mentholated quality and radiates. Both Horizon and Psych lean masculine to me, but Psych more so due to how far it radiates. I will enjoy my sample but probably won't purchase since I already own Patchouli Premier, L'HMXII, Terra Rossa and Psychedelique (I am a major patchouli fan lol).

I've yet to sample anything from Oriza L. Legrand that did not seem interesting and original to me; this is no exception. This fragrance claims to be a reconstruction of what was made by this company in 1925, but it smells so up-to-date and refreshingly unusual that this is hard for me to believe. This is a very amber scent, but the notes in it did not produce for me the expected accords. The marmalade and tangerine at the top make a delicious accord like orange rind that dominated everything else, and are backed by the patchouli and cacao bean underneath. The cognac makes them whole thing smell slightly (but not overwhelmingly) boozy. Given these notes I would think this would smell like a true gourmand--like a liquor-filled chocolate-orange truffle--, but that's not really how this comes off. It's much lighter and more refreshing than that. I note other people have compared it to Reminscence's Patchouli (probably because of the chocolate-like patchouli) and Givenchy's pre-2017 Gentleman (the patchouli mixed with honey), and though i can see some points where this does echo those fragrances faintly, to me this is pretty original. This is also reasonably priced, and you just cannot do a more splendid presentation (with a heavy bottle, a gorgeous silken tassel, and beautiful period graphics on the thick box) for the money than Oriza L. LeGrand does. This would make a wonderful gift for someone who likes elegant patchouli fragrances.

Delightful and unusual combination-- is it for a cowboy or a librarian? Despite its age it does come off as absolutely contemporary-- this was a composition ahead of its time. I understand why they called it Horizon. There is something expansive about it, rugged like a wild and open landscape, masculine but also unusually cozy, comforting, warm. It's the warmth of coming in from a raw and moody outdoor space on a crisp day, into a place where there is fire and bread baking and a hot drink to warm you up, something with a bit of brandy tipped into it. Patchouli for sure but while it dominates, it does not drown out the rest of the composition, and I haven't encountered patchouli used quite this well in many instances. And in what strikes me as something of a miracle, all these notes like cacao, almond, honey, and vanilla come together in a way that doesn't even begin to suggest 'christmas cookie' or something more gourmand-- it has these notes but this does not smell like food, my least favorite genre of fragrance. The rose, petitgrain, tobacco and peat keep it natural and woodsy-outdoorsy enough to guard it from becoming gourmand.

A good patchouli is just that: a good patchouli. And whats better than that? Horizon isnt complex or revolutionary. Patchouli as a note itself is complex as is, and all of its facets are shown here in the most naturalistic and convincing way possible. It is not screechy, metallic, moldy, overwhelming or disgusting. No, it is meditative, forest-like, mentholated, earthy, grand, chocolatey, warm, ambery, and much more. It doesnt smell like straight up patchouli oil, it doesnt smell like weed, no, horizon smells like... patchouli. Does that sound exciting? No. Maybe it is exciting for someone who isnt familiar with a realistic and pure patchouli , but to me its nothing new. Luckily, it doesnt have to be. Innovation never automatically equates to quality. The name horizon is fitting, it feels like im drifting into the sky as im dosing off in a field at sunset. Just wonderful Very similar to tempo and other ‘basic’ patchouli fragrances (patchouli can never be basic imo but im talking relatively). Compared to tempo, this one is less green and more dusty and calming.

Oh now this is a truly delectable patchouli! Starts out like pure patch, a little minty. Not dry dirt, but moist and damp soil, super peaty. It was a beautiful start but it becomes so much more as it unfolds on the skin. Honey sets in alongside a sweet resin, then hints of cacao and tobacco tease the nostrils. Horizon rivals Mazzolari's patchouli, my favorite patch until now perhaps. While remarkable, Mazzolari is not nearly as complex as Horizon, nor does it contain that wonderful whisper of cacao. Horizon smells like the leather-bound books lining the shelves of a German aristocrat's personal library, one inside the kind of mansion that Indiana Jones would raid. Certainly not a hippie's house! And again, mmmm, that hint of cacao! Patch lovers must try, but be prepared to fall in love and pay for a full bottle. (Ladies--this is certainly unisex, not for men only)

Imagine you’re drinking expensive cognac in the living room of your apartment. The building was bulilt in 1950’s and the interior was last renovated in 1980’s. You still have the original wooden furniture because you like the quality of it and would feel bad about throwing it away, even tough you know it have seen better days and doesn’t look or smell great anymore. The library is full of russian and french classics (you like modern books too, but don’t want to ruin the aesthetics so you hide them in the bedroom fully aware of being a poser). The apartment is full of house plants that you water religiously because the routine helps you keep your sanity. That’s what Horizon smells like. I love it almost as much as I love my house plants.

Oriza's fragrances are truly more memories in a bottle than fragrances. It was a hard thing for me to wrap my head around first. These are old recipes, updated just enough to carry them into today, but still strange enough to make you pause. The tagline 'for boys and tomboys' for Horizon is so funny, yet endearing to me somehow. In a world of unisex fragrances, this doesn't lean too masculine for me at all. I feel like I need to be in sweater or coat weather to gravitate towards it, or going on a particularly poetic errand. It's smokey, chocolatey, with a hint of candied oranges. The patchouli isn't shy. Brown liqueur, dark chocolate, your favourite book and a cheeky cigarillo after? Truly unique and memorable.

Take HDP 1740 Marquis de Sade, give it a bath, teach it some manners, give it a education at a prestigious university, add some chocolate, a splash of booze, tobacco flower, some earthy hay, and you have this creation. Top notch patchouli and although it's expensive, it's not as expensive as I thought it would be, or as expensive as it could be if you put this in a bottle that says Roja Dove or some other overpriced brand. Earthy, rich, complex, but also delicious. I'm not even a patchouli connoisseur or lover, but I know quality ingredients and quality perfumery, and both are here. This deserves a higher overall rating, it's a masterclass patchouli creation IMO. Scent: Perfect :10/10 Performance 6/10

Such a great autumn scent! It starts out with some sweet-ish notes (I get marmalade and tangerine) before quickly going into the heart notes, where patchouli is clearly the main player. It's a dark, earthy, medicinal patchouli that also has a minty tinge to it. At the same time you also get a careful amber, a dry tobacco, and clear woody notes (from the oak) with some hints of cacao. As it goes on to the base notes the cacao comes in full force and along with the benzoin and vanilla forms a smooth creamy base, while still being kept in check by the peat and patchouli. To me it smells like an autumn in a bottle, with all it's earthiness and decay but also it's warmth and coziness. Highly recommended!

I love dirt. Soil. I like the color of it. I like the feel of it on the soles of my bare feet, and I love the smell of it. As a child, I probably liked the taste of it, too. I can’t remember anymore. This fragrance is an ode to soil. It’s a hymn to mother earth and the wonderful things she nurtures: tangerines, patchouli, tobacco, chocolate, almonds and oak. I love this fragrance. Not everyone will. This fragrance has been around for a century now. First impressions might make you think it’s dated. Is there anything older than dirt or lovelier than our mother earth? I suspect this fragrance will be around another 100 years, still wowing weirdos like me.

I'm not saying they smell the same, by any means, but this immediately reminded me of a stronger and more complex version of Cuir Beluga and after I compared the notes I can see why since they both share tangerine, patchouli, leather/suede, almond/heliotrope, vanilla and amber. CB is much softer with much more vanilla and Horizon is punchier and with a lot more patchouli, but I guess those shared notes were enough to make me immediately make that connection. Again, they don't smell the same, but they are reminiscent enough that I'd say if you enjoy one, you'll very likely enjoy the other (unless you really dislike patchouli).

Horizon is a beautiful amber pachouli. The pachouli avoids any sharpness or mustiness. It is perfect. Nuanced, seemlessly blended. Sillage is moderate, longevity 6-8 hours. After Chypre Mousse I was surprised by how normal this is. But what they have in common is a high use of quality ingredients (naturals and synthetics). There is an elegant grandness in the style of this house with a dose of whimsical magic that I have not experienced from other perfumes. Oriza L Legrand is definitely on my list of best perfume houses.

Oh wow; what a very realistic wood scent! Not a Iso-woodscent but a real fresh cut harsh wood scent. Or..better; the best patchouli scent i have ever smelled before. Thank God there is not i little mm Angel in it ;-) (wich is in a lot of Patchouli scents after the Angel-succes) It is nowadays unisex bytheway :-) p.s. it is more that when this perfume would remind you of Borneo, Borneo would be a Horizon flanker cause Horizon was first!

Very nice aromatic patchouli, pleasant and light, similar style as Bois 1920 Real Patchouly edt, which is more on the feminine side, while Horizon is more masculine. People here are speaking nonsense, it has nothing to do with HDP 1740, two different scents Edit: The aroma is great when colder, when warmer I don't like it, the smell changes completely 7.5/10

This is a beautiful patchouli chocholate scent! Very very similar to Les Nereides Patchouli and Reminiscence Patchouli. I love them all but they are so similar to eachother that i hardley can tell them apart. It’s the same powdery, earthy cacao/patchouli with vanilla and some spices. I say choose the one you can get for a good deal, you do get the same.

The most beautiful fragrance I own. Beautiful patchouli-amber-chocolate-spice that creates an aura. The most complimented scent I've ever had. Its smooth, blended, timeless, stylish. Read the rest of the reviews, they are more detailed, and its all true. Oriza and Horizon do not get the accolades it deserves. this is the Meryl Streep of perfumes.

'For boys and tomboys' made me smile, this is just as gorgeous as every other Oriza L. Legrand fragrance. Horizon is sexy, it's very vintage and a little dusty in the best way. It smells like a handsome older man, maybe this is what Jay Gatsby would have smelt like.

This is an amaazing fragrance, it is really complex. When you first spray it on you get this boozy, cognag, wine type of a fragrance with some tobacco. After it settles down it smells like some fine high quality Cacao Powder with patchouli, leather and tobacco.

A lovely chocolate/cocoa and patchouli combo, reminding me of Serge Lutens’ Borneo. But much stronger and with an authentic period vibe.

Another masterpiece by my favorite fragrance house! This time, I think Oriza outdid themselves in every way, creating what seems to be the best tobacco fragrance out there- at least the best one I have discovered, and one that I think will be difficult to compete with in the future. A moist, soil-tobacco scent forms the heart of this fragrance. Around it is a veil of patchouli, cognac and cacao, ever so slightly sweet, together with a touch of bitter almond. A twist of leather is laid down beautifully in an oak cradle of honey, benzoin, and vanilla. So complex. So persistent. It sits beautifully on the skin, with nothing synthetic about it. I would be extremely surprised to discover a fragrance with better ingredient quality. This blend is spectacular; it feels as though an immense amount of thought, heart, and soul has been poured into it. It is marketed for men and definitely leans masculine, but the slight sweetness and overall magnificence of the fragrance make me enjoy it as a woman as well. I once layered it successfully with Rolling in Love by Kilian- the almond notes matched perfectly; it was a dream. Wonderful!

I'm definitely biased when it comes to patchouli, I can't think of a perfume that I would dislike if a big part of it is dominated by patchouli. This is a lovely honeyed patchouli, sweeter and with more character than Coromandel, not as loud or brash as Angel, more refined than my beloved C'est la Fete Patchouli. On me, it's an earthy patchouli and a generous dollop of honey, with a hint of pipe tobacco and black leather. Patchouli haters definitely need to give this one a miss. I agree with sweetnspicey, this isn't masculine, it's very comfortably unisex, leaning a little feminine even. The bonus surprise is that the sillage on this is good, whereas the others I've tried from this house have been a little disappointing. The longevity is wonderful, it's been a full 24 hours and I still smell this on my jacket as strongly as when I first applied it. It must be the magic of patchouli under the wizardry of Oriza L. Legrand. I definitely recommend this.

You need to give this beauty a bit of time....at first I just thought oh its like Borneo...another spicy patchouli...BUT then I wore it and fell in love with it. It is glorious and slightly more rounded more sophisticated than Borneo. I tried them back to back and it was the Horizon that on MY skin works best. And we're all different aren't we? Horizon opens with a full blast of patchouli and chocolate not that very bitter black chocolate of Borneo which is slightly camphorated but a smooth dark chocolate that's infused with sweet honey and creamy vanilla. It lasts and lasts and if you spray it on clothes will go on and on and eventually fade to a whisper of proper beautiful patchouli which for me is one of the most beautiful essential oils...try it - its wonderful!! Oh its good I think for men and women.

This is a luxuriously rich fragrance! Oriza L. Legrand has a unique blend of spices in each scent I have reviewed so far. But Horizon has the most unique. Top Notes of berry jams and pipe tobacco give off an intriguing luxury that keep your nose near. The heart notes are what captivate me though. Deep rich fresh cacao, dark as the dirt and as sweet as that pipe tobacco. The fade from top to mid is PERFECT. But don't be fooled that is a gourmand, because right there with it is a blast of patchouli and benzoin that keep this earthy and strong. Horizon is sweet with notes of honey, vanilla, amber, rum and has earthy gourmand scents like patchouli and cacao. These two are matches made in heaven. This fragrance is a for all people and screams to be warn on an autumn or winter day, and heavily.

Givenchy Gentleman (1974) has an opening patchouli-honey accord that is so similar to Horizon 's that I thought I was sampling the wrong one when I first sprayed this on. A few minutes later Horizon goes in an earthier direction with its cocoa and tobacco notes but that family resemblance was briefly there. Horizon 's dreamlike dark chocolate–patchouli accord then takes over and I can see why other reviewers call out similarities with Serge Lutens Borneo 1834 , another perfume I love, although Borneo 1834 doesn't have Horizon 's powdery amber complexities or softened sweetness. Horizon tests totally different on skin compared to the blotter and trying it today has given me one of those perfume moments that stops me in my tracks. A must to sample and a definite buy for me.

Starts off with a medicinally green dark patchouli, dripping with dew and molasses. Tobacco and cacao draw out the earthiness of patchouli, giving the impression of muddy roots. Realistic, like patchouli essential oil — wet, medicinal, and very very earthy. As it dries down, Horizon reveals an oriental character, fluffing up the harshness of the opening. Dusky leather, vanilla, and honey. Does anyone else smell Shalimar in this?! I’m surprised nobody mentioned Shalimar, because on my skin Horizon reveals a Shalimar swimming in patchouli oil. Or maybe I’m reading too much into the 1920s association :) Very extreme in the opening, but a cuddly soft oriental at the drydown. Women can definitely pull this off.

I absolutely detest Reminiscence Patchouli and dislike Jovoy Psychedelique, this is definitely in a similar vein but much more tolerable and the most quality and well-blended. It doesn't have that nasty hippie-ish patchouli skank. Definitely an opulent and heady 1920s Golden Age type scent. Tobacco and cognac and panther-skin rugs and velvet curtains and fur coats. Still heavy on the patchouli but in a much more elegant way, reminds me of a more bold and raunchy Coromandel. Also reminds me of Juliette Has A Gun's Calamity J, but this is obviously much higher quality. Very, very impressed, from the beauty and mastery in a type of patchouli scent I normally hate.

Opens with chocolate, vanilla, rose, woody, and a lot of patchouli. It’s really, really lovely. An hour in and it dries down to a nice powdery vanilla patchouli-amber. Really like this one. Not sure if I’d want to wear something so patchouli heavy but if I come around to it, I’d definitely consider buying this if it wasn't quite expensive. About 2 hours in and it’s a warm spicy patchouli and the amber comes forward in the following hours. I don't think the projection is very impressive on this one. Longevity is average.

Your devastatingly handsome silver fox cacao farmer boyfriend just got home to make out with you for half an hour on the lanai. In the romance novel you write about him years later this is what you’ll say his chest smelled like. Edit: Okay I’ve finished my sample... while I was in love with it for the first few applications ^ as detailed above, now it sometimes strikes me as smelling like chocolate nail polish. So, get a sample and try for yourself before you get a full bottle :)

A fragrance that summons up a weekend in an old-fashioned country house hotel: luxurious breakfasts, languorous bath times, fine dining and much pampering amidst leather upholstery and wood-panelled smoking rooms. This is a delicious mix of honey and patchouli with an earthy/woody base. One of those fragrances you would reach for if you were tired of sickly sweet florals or dryer than dry vetivers and you wanted instead a total immersion in heady ambery exoticism.

From the opening it's clear this is going to be a dominant patchouli perfume. To the chocolate-like patchouli, in the beginning there is a healthy dose of cognac, sweet vanilla and bitter orange for a touch of light in this dark, damp perfume. The dry down is syrupy and thick with added tobacco leaves and a subtle leather with a sensual aspect, all this combined with the bitter cocoa and patchouli, off course. 7.5/10

I got a sample decant from Luckyscent, it's nice! love the unexpected chocolate note you get in the first few minutes, then it dries down to a classic amber-y patchouli scent. very heady and sexy, so a little goes a long way. the dry down actually reminds me a lot of Tabu, that old perfume in the violin shaped bottle. not sure if I would spring for a full bottle of Horizon, personally, but it's worth sampling!

Cool, peat-y gourmand. Another offering from Oriza L. Legrand in the vintage style. This is not the Angel plastic doll head patchouli but a cold, damp, almost camphorous patchouli. This contrasts interestingly with the chocolate and honey-like tobacco. A musty, ancient, long shut up mansion; dark wood rooms with sweet tobacco lying in a dish. A dark, gothic patchouli. Surprisingly short lived, though. :(

A beautiful, rich but dusty patchouli-cacao-amber scent. Kind of sexy in a mature way. This has a real warmth to it - it reminds me of an old attack stored with books and boxes where the heat is full on. But in a good way. At the same time, that is also a bit of the downside of Horizon: in the long run this can get a bit oppressive and linear. A real charmer for cold winter nights though.

I liked the scent but either this has really bad performance or I go anosmic to it almost immediately. Other reviewers don't seem to have the same issue so I'm guessing it's me. Edit: Re-sampling a couple years later, this is too dry of a patchouli for me. It's like the dustiest cocoa powder rather than a rich chocolate type of patchouli.

Of the many patchoulis I've tried, this is the most similar to Borneo 1834 but is quite a bit dustier, and that's saying something because Borneo is already at my personal limit of how dusty I want my patchoulis to be. Although the difference is noticeable smelling it up close, they probably smell the same to someone in your scent bubble.

Horizon is a very nice perfume that feels really quality-like. I find it very dry, and this dryness is the only thing that leans masculine. On my skin there's little sweetness and nothing creamy, so I won't commit to a full bottle, even if I did get a few compliments when wearing it at the office.

a lovely vintage scent...very boozy in its beginning, transforming into this leathery chocolate tabacco. not personally for me, but it's a very compelling and thoughtful perfume! feels as though youre being served cognac in a fabulously retro lounge

Tobacco + apricot marmalade in an oak barrel filled with rum and dusted with sweetened cocoa powder. Bizarre and delightful.

Powdery smokey leathery patchouli. A little old fashioned. Refined. Dapper.

I’m trapped in a patchouli-amber Groundhog Day where this now smells similar to ‘Patchouli Nobile’ by Nobile 1942 and ‘Un Patchouli’ by Obvious Parfums. In direct comparison, this is more subtle, aromatic and powdery thanks to the fresh herbal petitgrain and the sweetly tangy marmalade notes. This becomes a close skin scent almost immediately. It’s nuanced, smoothly baby-soft, velvety and balanced. But for me (as beautiful as it is) this patchouli is too shy.

I recently purchased several patchouly samples because I am (once again) searching for a wearable, relatively unique patchouly-forward eau de parfum with other, well-blended notes. I do not want to reiterate and regurgitate what others have already stated about this perfume. However, for me Horizon is a huge disappointment. In summary, this perfume landed into one huge, almost "gourmand-y" mess on my skin. Just look at the notes. To me, there is just way too much going on with this fragrance. And the landing was difficult to endure. I suppose the end notes of peat, leather and ambergris just did not agree with me. And to my nose, the fragrance turned dusty and powdery. This is a hard pass.

The alcoholic start reminds a little Borneo with an extra touch of leather that fades soon and a flat and retro sweetness of a century. A minute later he turns to dust, moldy books, powdered wigs. He does not like my stomach and my nose. a suffocating fougerie, a century old and zero versatile. Nothing deep,primordial and airy as in Lutens. The sweetness from the cacao,benzoin , honey and tobacco of Horizon is boring me soon. The style reminded me a little of Pour un homme de Caron that I hate. I think they have the same vanilla. Horizon has many notes, little character and a style that I do not agree with. step
