Royal Oeillet

absolutely stunning fragrance, ordered a bottle as soon as I sampled. has the smell of when you just blow a candle out , which I love and then settles down to an incense/carnation mix, heavenly scent.

It's soapy, powdery, yet very spicy and quite sweet. It's absolutely edwardian. To me, it smells like Mary Poppins. A bit too sweet on the dry down with the honey note for my taste though, especially in the summertime when it could become overwhelming. I guess it's more than a single spoonful of sugar.

Deeply evocative of a childhood scent, something from my grandparents house. A balance of geranium, both spicy and soapy. Can't really distinguish the notes. It is somewhat too much like Irish Spring; I would actually prefer more clove, to warm it up a bit. Definitely unique.

This is spicy, peppery carnation/geranium.

Carnation. Oeillet means carnation and it delivers carnation. Carnation is not listed as a note because it's an accord made of rose and spices. Most carnation accords are composed of rose and cinnamon. This one has rose and rose geranium plus cloves and black pepper and pink pepper. I usually dislike pepper notes in perfume but this one is perfectly done to yield the desired carnation scent. (Some carnation notes in fragrances are not accords but natural carnation EO, which has a strong green stems and leaves element as well as the flower element, so it's only used when a leaves and stems scent is desired.) I'm a big fan of carnation, and I really love this. Edited on the 24th: I loved this so much I bought one, and when it arrived I sprayed it on immediately and hated it. It smelled like hay and pepper. I identified the hay smell as being geranium, a flower smell that I hate. I realize now I tested it in the cool of the evening outside and sprayed it on this afternoon in the afternoon summer heat and it smells totally different. I thought I had tested it for summer weather but it must have been under room temperature outside then. I went for a swim and it's still on my arm but it's more tolerable now but definitely not carnation. Lesson learned: being summer doesn't mean it's summer weather if the sun went down, I have to test all test cloths sitting in full sun to see what they do when hot. Instant love to instant hate after buying a full bottle, ugh.

I like this again! Now the weather cooled off and the rose plus black pepper is giving a carnation top note again. And it still smells nice when it devolves back to just rose and black pepper later. I had loved this last winter, hated it when the weather warmed up, and now it's mid November and I am really enjoying it again. I gave it another chance because I just tried Zaharoff Black Rose which is also rose and black pepper and really liked it. So I tried this again today and it's back to smelling the way it's supposed to. There really are cold weather and hot weather fragrances and this one is for cold weather only. Which is actually really good because carnation is the birthstone flower of January.

This is one of the strangest fragrances I've ever experienced. It creates a general feeling of uncomfort, for me. It smells oily - if a smell could have a greasy texture, this would! Not one particular note really stands out, just a vague, rubbery floral, which I believe is the geranium, having smelled them in real life. There is nothing else in the fragrance besides that scent, from start to finish. It's stale, flat, and peculiar. Almost has a 'funeral parlor' feel to it. And, apparently "Oeillet" translates into carnation - but there is no carnation note listed?

The opening of Royal Oeillet is distinctly odd. I haven't smelled anything else like it. Perhaps overall this is something like black pepper, powdery rose, and bergamot, ...but even then, not a modern interpretation of those notes. Hopefully this strangeness is suggestive of the possibility that Oriza L. Legrand is faithfully following a truly vintage formula that they claim from 1900. Of course, 'oeillet' does mean carnation, but this perfume smells nothing like the sweet spiciness of true carnations, ...nor of cloves, Indeed, more recent constructions of the carnation accord smell much more like the actual flower, ...but that is not meant as a damning criticism. I'm much more interested here with the accuracy of archaic perfumery, than in floral versimilitude. Indeed, in the deeper drydown, there is a soft note of cloves to be perceived. I'm certainly enoying sampling this marvelous curiosity. And as for actual wearability, I think this would probably work best as a summer daytime cologne for hot weather.

This opens on my skin with fresh fluffy carnations! Beautiful and stunning! This is really well done and uplifting. There is a hint of clove and rose and pepper but for me it reminds me of sweet Pinks or carnations in the garden. It is almost a true soliflore but better as it slighltly shifts and settles to a long drydown. Oriza is one of the best niche perfume houses and does stunning fragrances. This is long lasting and beautiful. Drydown is gorgeous and for me if the DD is good then its FB worthy. The others that I like by Oriza are Chypre Mousse, Relique and Reve.....beautiful.

By contrast to the previous review, I experience RO as the closest thing to a real carnation I have ever smelled in perfumery. For me, it immediately becomes the reference for carnation soliflores. There are many "carnation" scents, but none smell like the real thing. Making RO unique. I do detect clove, some violet leaf, pepper and rose, but for the most part, the individual notes do not stand out as such. What you get is a blend that stands on its own. RO was not a big projector for me, but seems to have pretty good longevity.

How strange! Pyramid above hints at something powerfully spicy and warm - but on me this is a cool, fresh, pale-pink carnation freshly picked from the field with a bit of dew still on it. On me it's discreet, and grows softer and more powdery within a couple of hours. Lovely, feminine, restrained stuff; maybe a bit too 'classic' for my personal taste, but beautifully done.
