Montabaco

The opening of this fragrance is one of the best I've come across - it's soft aromatic suede leather, tobacco leaf, warm cardamom. There is a lot of ISO E Super in this number, which for me is both good and bad. The good is that in from the opening to the heart notes, it creates truly amazing effects. If you put even a dab of this on, it is very strong, with ISO E Super modulating the sillage into many vapour trails each of which have a slightly different 'take' on the central theme. This really draws you in. People around you would smell it and notice it - and it really does smell a cut above. Very noticeably - but nothing about this fragrance is 'in your face'. So in the beginning, the ISO E Super for me is acting as a modulator for the other scents, keeping everything dynamic and dancing around this central suede/tobacco/cardomom theme. As the scent dries down, I get more and more ISO E super, until it's all I can really notice and if I'm honest the effect is cloying. There are other things there, but the ISO E Super really does dominate. I was truly blown away by this fragrance on first application, and subsequently, the opening never fails to impress. But you have to really like ISO E Super to really dig this one long term (in my opinion), which, let's face it, is a synthetic molecule. If you are into Ormonde Jayne for the naturals which they excel at, it seems to me a bit off piste to go for a fragrance which steers so heavily towards Geza Schoen's calling card a la Molecule 01. Still a great fragrance, but for me Ormonde Man remains at the top of the list of offerings from Ormonde Jayne.

Fresh Tobacco. This is a fantastic take on tobacco. The mellow, woody tobacco is smoked with smooth suede; freshened up with a non-sour zest of bergamot; aromatized with a green accord of tea, juniper, and oakmoss; lightly-spiced with cardamom; sandalwood adds light soft woodiness; finally a clean, aromatic lavender-like note (mountain air? Iso E Super?) adds a further touch of cleanness to complete this olfactive symphony. The final scent is lightly-woody, slightly smoky, fresh, zesty, green, lightly spicy, clean, and cool. It is so well done! I know there is so much going on here but it is so well-blended, like a colorful painting. It almost causes you Stendhal syndrome. Seldom tobacco is made in such a fresh way nowadays, but here not is it only done but done to about perfection. Montabaco is a modernized version of the old, sharp barbershopy citrus-tobacco fragrances like Guerlain Vetiver and D&G Pour Homme but Montabaco is far from being that old sharp barbershop scent. This scent theme also gives the feeling that Montabaco smells familiar or even "generic" to some but that character and depth it has makes it, again, far from that. One of the best masculine scents I've smelled in a while. Like a fresh version of YSL's La Nuit de L'Homme. If you mix La Nuit de L'Homme with Montblanc Legend/A&F Fierce you'll end up with something similar. The opening also reminds me of Carolina Herrera's classic Herrera for Men. This is a great date fragrance. Perfect for neutral and warm weather. Good performance. I totally "Love" it despite how very familiar it smells.

I bought this in winter 2021 and it took me a long time to write about this. This is the first fragrance I bought that is far and away what I would call a masterpiece. I personally use this autumn/winter, under-spray for daytime and normal for special occasions/nighttime. It would suit someone else differently for other times I'm sure. Obviously performance is stellar. It's cool and highly aromatic. It's got a fresh edge to it, and it sparkles and cuts through the air, yet doesn't feel confined to summer. The notes accurately portray what you can expect, but the quality is off the charts. It was the first fragrance to clearly demonstrate how a scent develops over time. It showed me what was possible and what luxury perfume is. The notes are distinct, identifiable yet also balanced and done to complete perfection. I got compliments, my parent's had their minds totally blown by this too. My mom identified each note correctly but at the same time we wanted to wear it. Once you get going smelling this you really don't care about anything else. It's like opiates. It gives super city chic/glam or 2000's Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It gives NYC in the winter, glamorous young woman wearing a dark burberry trench with metallic detailing stepping into a limo, smokey eyes and Victoria Secret blowout and whipping put their phone texting en route. It gives Pierce Bronson and Daniel Craig's James Bond dressed up at a party. Really cool Oriental Fougere.

The first I've tried from Ormonde Jane...I think? Well this is the first review in any case and I have to say, a very impressive fragrance. The composition of this scent is truly well conceived, I often think of Geza Schoen being an ultra modern, minimalist (or con-artist?) due to the eccentric Molecules line. In fairness he's done many works worthy of note like Kinski and Bouddica Wode which are pretty complex. Anyway... Montabaco is a real knockout and I'd say it's quite a floral focused scent at it's core. The sweetness of jasmine and magnolia definite chime strong in this and more so as I was expecting it to be laden with heavy tobacco, especially from the way the SA sold it to me. The tobacco isn't that strong though and even the bergamot, and herbal clary sage/tea combo comes through delivering quite a fresh and uplifting scent. There's a warmth behind it all the time though and I'd attributed that to sandalwood and cedar ~(ISO) but when the main event lands the tobacco sits subtly but powerfully under those top notes. I genuinely couldn't Identify it as tobacco from the first couple of hours and then, as if by magic it's there and suiting the other notes perfectly. It's even a little bit smokey too when you get deep into the drydown. I don't know what else to say about this fragrance other than I wholeheartedly love it, and I want a bottle.

I will update this later. First impressions: why has nobody mentioned aldehydes? A very confusing scent in the best way possible. High pitches and thin: I think the reviewer that called this a hedione fragrance with small bits of other things added is closest. Over time it sweetens a bit and develops a smooth musk smell but always with this hedione + A bright and light tobacco with a little ash. I would say opening is like bracing cold mountain air. It’s the moment you make it to the peak of the Andes on a cold morning. The minute of silence at the top. Reminds me of a hedione and tobacco version of Frapin Lhumaniste, less citrus more white floral air. Drydown is much smoother, a hedione with a little bit of musk, herbal, sweet, tobacco, spices. Here I agree with another reviewer that there’s a hint of Tea for Two with spices + tea + smoke accord but way lighter and abstract Feels very geza, this could be the eccentric version of a hedione product for his brand. Maybe I just go noseblind but to me this is a light and hard to smell fragrance, but I’m sure it will be more noticeable when I’m actually moving around.

ELEGANCE WITH A TWIST _______________________________________________________ Today I was in a fragrance store in search for a new oud scent - I had my eyes on a new Montale fragrance. When the 'Montale' disappointed, I told the clerk that I was looking for something different and bold. After trying out some fragrances, she was at her wits' end and presented me with MONTABACO. It was so spectacular, that I was speechless. She tried vaguely to say something about the company and about this scent, but I couldn't hear her. My mind was too blown, to be able to hear anything at all. It was like, all of your life you knew that out there were only 3 doors to go through... but then comes MONTABACO, takes your hand and shows you a forth one - spectacular! Everybody seems to get strong tabacco in MONTABACO, but I don't. All I got was a very elegant and floral combination of suede and clare sage, with a powerful twist of bergamot. Longetivity: - 10/10 Sillage: - 10/10 All in all: 10 out of 10 points. P.S. Even after I had showered, my wrist still smelled of MONTABACO.

I'll be honest. I originally HATED this scent. All I could pickup were dried incense and notes of old tea bags. I bought a 10ml version to test out (which was not cheap). I was so disappointed. Until my wife started commenting how amazing I smelt every time I put it on. I kept insisting I didn't like it, like it was dried up tobacco that you would smell in an old-fashioned pipe. But true to word, I'd spray it every now and then and she'd go crazy. Then I started wearing it a bit more and applying more sprays. One day, in Spring, it just clicked. I couldn't stop smelling myself. It was like a whole new fragrance, with complex tobacco and tea leaves replacing anything I could smell before. I've never had that happen to me before with a perfume, and now I keep that 10ml for special occasions because it makes me feel great. It's an instant hit and can be worn all year round. I find it to be an amazing spring and summer scent, like a backstreet in Verona with espresso and cigarette floating in the morning air. Buy it.

Montabaco is a light, lemonadish-but-not-so-sweet, tea scent. It is very unisex. I didn't get the tobacco that well and In the dry down it got quite soapy. Quality is good, longevity ok. It is in fact a quite original creation, I wouldn't be able to come up with a similar fragrance. To me there is no wow factor and I find it a bit boring. So far I got mixed feelings about Montabaco. I think I got my hopes up too high judging from the reviews and the other work of Geza Schoen. I won't rate this one yet, I think I will have to smell/wear it a few times more. --- Recently sprayed it on again. This time it got very soapy, a bit vetiver like. I do think this is something special and very unique. Just still don't know if it is for me. --- I am starting to understand it more and more. And I also appreciate it more and more. It's just very refined and original. I still have not bought it yet (only sample spray), but I am seriously thinking about it. Maybe I''ll try the Intensivo version first! :)

This is the perfume that Daniel Craig's James Bond would wear with his tux in Casino Royale... Or Eva Greene - you choose On the one hand it is such a refined sophisticated blend - the spices, the citrus, the florals, the tea and the sandalwood - all such classy refined ingredients. And in that mix sits the tobacco with the oakmoss - it is the ruffian, bad boy side of that Bond, the rough edges that signal that he's dangerous, that even if he's in a really expensive suit, he could knock you out. The brilliant thing about this is how it almost transforms depending on who wears it. On the one hand it hits so masculine. Then imagine it on Eva Greene and suddenly it is the sexy femme fatale - the woman who's going to take you on an adventure, albeit a dangerous one. I don't think there will ever be a dull moment with a woman who wears this... It's one of the most refined perfumes I own... 9/10

One of the most exquisite fragrances I've ever tried, surely. Beyond words, it's beautiful so utterly Gorgeous and pleasant, evokes calm and serene vibes of standing on high lush mountains overlooking the clouds, feeling the pure air, passing over your entire being, this scent has that transporting effect, carefully and masterfully blended, it's hard to pick distinct notes but the scent opens up with some greenness that's uplifting, very airy touches of sweetness enter as it evolves during its long lifespan as a skin scent. Initially projects generously, garnered unexpected compliments for me, fragrances don't get that done so often, especially niche ones for me. If you're willing to shell out on a well crafted perfume at this price point, this one has all the typical checkmarks ticked for sure. Must try for sure for an immersive Olfactive experience. 10/10

On my skin, this opens airy, fresh, and clean in its own unique way. A huge bowl of fresh air from the usual citrusy, soapy, shower gel-like fresh perfumes. Dries down to a richer smell, I definitely get the tea and the suede. Still remains fresh overall which makes it the most versatile smell I've experienced yet. The only downside other than the price is I don't detect any tobacco, but that may just be my nose. I feel like this is what YSL's Grain de Poudre should have been, I can't help but detect similarities with these two fragrances due to the fresh tea and suede combo. While I always found the YSL very cloying, I feel like I could douse myself in Montabaco and never be bothered by it due to its airy nature. I have yet to test the longevity, but to me this is a fresh and sexy fragrance with an amazing blend.

If you haven't tried Nawab of Oud, Ormonde Man, and Montobaco from the house of @ormondejayne, you're truly missing out on a unique style that is worthy of high praises. Montabaco is part of Ormonde Jayne's four corners of the earth collection and boy oh boy! It's incredible! It's mainly a very dry tobacco fragrance. It's played nicely with iso e super, clary sage, tea, juniper, and cardamom. It's got a small floral heart of magnolia and rose, while some light sandalwood, and suede rounded things up nicely. This is not a herod, a tobacco vanille, or any tobacco fragrance you're used to, it's airy, little sweetness, and dry. The Intensivo is just a higher concentration (extrait), cuddling the beast territory. If you dress formal, montabaco will make you look good, unique, and outstanding.

Amazing scent - powerhouse in projection - sharp piquant blonde cigarette a wisp of smoke. I wrote this piece as I received the Selfridges Montabaco Extreme. Apparently it’s 50% as opposed to Montabaco Intensivo at 42%... even then the normal version is a stinker too! I have all three. The Extreme version is missing a little of the brightness and piquant Spicey touch as in white pepper that is more prominent in Intensivo and indeed the standard. Instead the body of blonde tobacco is deeper and broader. The difference is subtle for most people though it is clear to me... so I’d think most would be happy with any version... If I was purely on budget I’d settle for the Intensivo version but strangely enough I am happy I have the three... now to find the Verano version!

I tried all of Four Corners and must admit that Montabaco was the one I truly and deeply fell for. (unlike most bloggers who praise Tsarina which on my skin smelled dull and somehow flat). Montabacco on the other hand is a completely different story: it's strong, it's powerfull and it demands atention. Definitely not a scent for faint hearted and weak women as it has a subtle yet dominant masculine note. This is one of the very few fragrances that I can actually distinguish separate notes and according to my nose the strongest is tobacco, leather and sandalwwod accompanied by duo of jasmine and rose. I can also smell clary sage which my brain classifies as a balmy accent.

This is what I imagine a beautiful model man (Tyson Beckford) must smell like on a misty, foggy morning, smoking a rolled up (the ones you make yourself from a tobacco pack) cigarette, while sitting naked on a rock, covered in lichen, moss, funghi and wild mushrooms. The month is October, when it is mild and moist in the morning, yet it already has the scent of autumn in the air and the sun's rays are warm but meek and mild. This is what this fragrance is. A modern melancholic classic, oozing with class, natural essence and unparalleled beauty. It smells natural and feels like a hug from a friend or a lover. 10/10. Modern Masterpiece.

İlk denediğimde kararsız kalmıştım. 5 ay sonra tekrar denediğimde ise çok beğendim. Marka bununla birlikte 4 adet özel parfüm üretmiş. Ben bunu ve oud lu olanı beğenmiştim. Oud san halen emin değilim ama Montabaco gerçekten çok başarılı. Tütün bildiğiniz tutun gibi değil. Kadife gibi bir tütün. Listedeki notaları tek tek alamıyorum ama tutun ve süet ön planda. Bu kokuya güzel demek istemiyorum. Belki de ilk defa bir parfümün çok şık olduğunu düşünüyorum. Genel havasında kalite atmosferi var. Bence her mevsim ve her iklim için uygun. 30 yaş üstü için ideal. Yüzlerce parfüm denedim bugüne kadar ve Montabaco ilk 10 arasına girdi.

This is an incredible scent! I have trouble moving on and wearing anything else. Classy, smooth, strong but not overpowering or cloying, very unique. What a masterpiece! Longevity is indeed very long, over 12 hours! Update after a few more days: it is so good it might be in my all time top 5, considering i have over 60 high end fragrances btw Got the Intensivo version. It is the same but much more concentrated. Note that this is a different treatment than their Elixir versions of their other lines, which are not only stronger/ more concentrated but also reformulated slightly differently than the original scents.

Okay so JUST based off the smell it smells pretty woody and juicy from the orange, juniper, and bergamot. The cardamom is so pronounced in the entire fragrance experience, it gives off this spice cabinet smell. If i had to compare this to anything id say that this is a combination of creed's himalaya with la nuit de l'homme. A very musky clean scent with a whole bunch of that overdose of spicy cardamom. The only downside id say that this is a very light scent, even overspraying this doesn't do much for me. :/

To write this review I had to respray from this perfume. The opening is really good it is not something generic, it smells natural and fresh, maybe like what it says "mountain air"? Now that it had settled down, I noticed the hints of the flowers, a pretty good fragrance I would say also, feels like it fits all seasons. Also for its sillage, I wouldn't say it is strong enough but if you spray more and get a fair distance to someone it is noticeable to smell. Another unique smell obtained in my collection.

I have the intensive version, for me , very high well blended quality of fragrance. It is Aventus in the send mass appealing. Will not let you down. Different in good terms than any other fragrance I smelled ( above 500) Great day/signature/mature/elegant scent. Prefect. Loved it. One spray is good enough to fill in a room air ( this is how it projects and stay) Surely will buy another bottle and more form the line.

Big love. This is a unique take on tobacco, it’s potent yet airy. Thankfully it’s not overly spicey and syrupy sweet like so many modern takes, and it’s not dry and stuffy like most old school tobacco frags. Two sprays is plenty, more it will fill a room and be too intrusive. Lasts all day in my skin. Smells high quality, not cheap nor designery. Wearable in summer.

This is a niche version of Imagination by Louis Vuitton. Not in that the smells are similar per se, but the vibe is similar. They both very light and can be used all the time and anywhere. I very much prefer heavy and dark scents but I quite like this. It will be my go to professional scent.

Great man fragrance. It's not sharp or more sugar. I love this composition, idea. Intensive is enough its not tired to nose. The best part is spread and prejection. It works all day. I recommend really for real perfume. Scent: 9 Long: 9 Project:8

I have the intense version and I have to say it is my new favorite fragrance. It is simply beautiful. To my nose its more of a floral fougere with a bit of spice. Its a very upscale scent. I AM IN LOVE :-)

Could have been a signature scent for me. The top and midnotes are really nice and sophisticated. However, on my skin Montabaco dries down extremely soapy. I tend to dislike soapy scents. 6,5/10

Great perfume. The scent is long lasting and the staying power is amazing too. Everything is fine. People around me say that I smell amazing. A perfume for true gentlemen. 10/10

Simply, a masterpiece. Pity this original version has effectively been discontinued, in favour of the stronger 'Intensivo' version, which is still a lovely fragrance.

I went to the Ormonde Jayne store to buy a bottle of Ormonde Man and was given a sample of this. It's incredible.

Ever wonder what the "Smooth Operator" of Sade's eponymous song smells like? Look no further.

Before wearing Montabaco, I looked up the note pyramid and was intrigued by the mention of a “mountain air” note. Sure enough, the opening delivered exactly that—this crisp, fresh, almost mentholated airiness. I’d attribute it to the combination of cardamom, clary sage, and juniper, with a subtle citrus presence in the background. It felt invigorating, clean, and almost weightless. Then, something unexpected happened—it felt like the scent just stopped. The vibrant opening faded quickly, and I was ready to write it off as one of those fragrances that start strong but vanish after a couple of hours. The floral mid-notes? Completely absent for me. I was hoping for tea and hedione, but I didn’t pick up on them at all. But then, gradually, something shifted. A soft, sweet amber and tobacco note started emerging, slowly gaining strength. At first, I thought it was coming from someone nearby, but I soon realized it was Montabaco’s base notes coming to life. The dry down developed into a warm, ambery-tobacco scent, but as it deepened, it became clear that Iso-E Super was the dominant player. The drydown has that characteristic "phantom" effect where the scent seems to fade, only to reappear in subtle waves. To summarize: Montabaco is a refined, crowd-friendly scent that leans masculine. It starts fresh and airy, then transforms into a woody-tobacco fragrance with a whispering, elusive dry down. The quality is undeniable, and while it’s long-lasting, its projection starts moderate and becomes ephemeral—fading in and out like a lingering memory.

Great performer in both longevity and projection factors. Lighter, brighter, fresher and airier take on tobacco. Rather dry than juicy. Can be nauseating for some of you - mind the amount of sprays (2-4 was fine for me and I'm heavy sprayer). Heavy on ISO E Super. Got that "mountain air" vibe. Prominent notes I noticed will be mainly: clary sage, cardamom, suede tea, violet & sandalwood. In my opinion it's well blended as a whole experience. Very versatile, spring/summer (no high heat tho) and fall friendly. More daily driver than evening showstopper. Casual, smart-casual setting. Overpriced, but if you like it's profile a lot - you won't be disappointed. I liked it, even get bottle but I'm 29yo and my friend said he could smell it greatly in the air, but he described it as "2003 vibes" (whatever he meant) - and I don't want to smell dated in any means. I would say it's not dated but can be quite polarizing depends on your age. For me it's kinda "dad's scent" - which is still nothing bad. I think mature wearer (35+yo) would pull it off better than me. I'm just not a dad, so I got rid of the bottle.

A lovely heady fougere style composition evoking the smell and feel of Latin America, Montabaco is a good example of the expert blending skills of Geza Schoen. For this perfume he deftly combines natural and synthetic accords for a smoothly blended journey to the heart of the South American aura. The perfume opens with citrusy aromatic notes of orange, bergamot, juniper, sage, and cardamom. The heart is mostly floral with magnolia, hedione, rose, violet, and tea. The perfume settles on a dense powdery tobacco, with iso e super, suede, sandalwood, moss, tonka, and ambergris. The perfume (Intensivo version) has tremendous projection and sillage (in part to the iso e super) and lasts forever. It can be classified as a unisex scent though it leans slight masculine. This is a lovely composition worth sampling at least. Enjoy!

Complex Tea and Tobacco Very interesting fragrance, opens up airy and then tobacco hits pretty quick along with a bit of sage and even less citrus. To me the tobacco smelt like I had just smoked a cigar it threw me off at first. It eventually starts settling down and you start smelling more of the moss and suede as the tobacco begins to take a back seat, the tobacco remains present for most of the fragrance. After a couple of hours as the tobacco fades and this is where it gets amazing for me. The tea along with other base notes . Smells amazing on the Drydown. I wish I enjoyed the tobacco in the opening more this would be a 10 otherwise.

Your immediately hit with smokey tobacco, clary sage, suede, iso super and spicey cardamom which expands all around you in a warm atmosphere. I think it is the clary sage which is making my eyes water! I find this rather acrid but then as it settles further and it seems to sweeten and the jasmine and cardamom come more to the fore. Its the fact the clary sage has lessened! I get the refreshing lime, the sea from the amber gris and the sweet wood from the tonka and sandalwood at the base. I can just about make out the dry effect of the tea note. This would be gorgeous on a man but the killer clary sage note is too much for me.

The beginning is fresh, floral, sweet, and spicy/peppery. It then turns into a friendly scent like a warm hug (or, as the website description calls it, "simpatico"). Musky, fresh-spicy, smooth, and unmistakeably expensive. It paints a picture of a person who is expensive but not out of touch; kind but not because they're childish, but because they actively chose to uphold virtue. It has moderate silage, good for all seasons and all occasions. I don't think I'll buy a full-size of this. But if you have the money, defenitely get it.

Nose to skin I get cardamom and tobacco mainly. In the air I pick up on the tea and it is lovely. Having this on one wrist, and Intensivo on the other, I can attest that the differences are negligible. Both have the "mountain air" accord that truly does make it seem...well...airy. I've never really been to the mountains to say whether or not it's accurate, but I can say it adds a needed dimension to the scents. I'm biased due to my love of tea scents, but this is really good stuff!

In comparison to the Intensivo version, there is very little separating the two. If you're a fraghead, you may notice that this original version is a little less fresh...the tobacco note has just a very slight animalic or stale touch to it...other than that, they're basically the same. If you had my back up against a wall, I'd choose Intensivo. Now then...the only thing that remains is for me to sample the Verano version...

Wanna know am I the only one who thinks this smells like shampoo? The "mountain air" and aquatic vibe, mixed with bunch of refreshing herbs, various kinds of subtle unknown flowers, a hints of moist moss, comes up really smells like a clean soapy shampoo! Far form my expectation, but I found it very appealing and easy to wear. Love it ! Btw, same with some of the comments below, I didn't get the tobacco...

A calming, comforting blend.😌 I prefer the Parfum rather than the Intensivo, which leans more masculine to my nose. I layer the Intensivo w/ various florals to fem it up & find, happily, that it plays well w/ most soliflores🌹& quite a few bouquets. 💐

Undoubtedly, is Montabaco.This is a hedione of extensive use, and a small amount of tobacco, ambergris ketones, leather common interpretation of Brazil's uninhibited. How good perfumer Geza schoen technology? Montavaco light and can not be captured, colorless and tasteless, is the wind, the clouds, also smoke.

Like. But... The tobacco note is supporting the blend instead of being dominant as the title says. So this is not for hardcore tobacco lovers. The scent is SUPERB, no doubt, but I get the same vibe as Narciso Rodriguez for Him Bleu Noir Narciso Rodriguez Fleuve Tendre Les Liquides Imaginaires For example. The tobacco doesn't have enough strength.

I have the intense version. Wore to a restaurant in Japan and was told to wash it off as it was too strong. So, this is potent, great projection but be careful on the number of sprays. I sprayed about 5 and that was too much, 1-2 is probably all you need. Great fragrance, very classy.

Jeebus this is basically what another reviewer said it was. Montblanc Legend lol. Almost a niche version. I would’ve loved to have seen the tobacco amped up in this one cause you get a bit of it at the start. There’s no way I’d pay an exorbitant price to have this in my collection.

wearing a second time and love it, received a nice compliment from my wife...so def a keeper. Sillage and longevity are great. I have the intensivo version and i highly recommend it.

Smells citrusy and smoky at first, as it dries off the leather and sandalwood come through a lot more. My nose doesnt pick up any floral scents but I dont have a trained nose

Not sure if it's the same but I have the Intensivo version. Quite nice, spice and a subtle tobacco in a classy way. Projection and longevity just right.
