Gentleman

Interesting! I blind bought this one at an outlet store for very cheap as it's been screaming at me every time I'm there. Does nobody buy it because it's bad? Bottle is tacky? I wasn't sure. I wasn't even sure of de la Renta's reputation in the community. I was destined to find out. So, a supreme impulse blind buy. Expectations being extremely low, I was pleasantly surprised with this one. The opening, to my nose (despite having almost no similarities in the note breakdowns), is about 90% similar to Bond No. 9's "Marriage Equality". It's missing the plum note for sure but whatever is used for the "champagne" accord must give it the same aura as the Bond. I like it. Just like the Bond (which I don't perceive as unisex) it has a very unique masculine fruity and spicy aroma. Although not listed, somewhat musky as well. Cardamom is a major player here. Nothing in this screams synthetic to me, quite the opposite. The drydown is quite different from the Bond, though. This goes to a more fruity, soapy vibe (I can see the perception of a medicinal smell but not in a bad way). The vetiver gives it a bit of a green tinge but only moderately noticeable. Fairly linear throughout. You definitely never lose the cardamom, which I like. However, I was expecting maybe more of an ambery base which would have really nailed this one for me. Fantastic scent overall. Longevity, surprisingly good. Sillage is moderate to heavy for the first 2 hours or so. I must say, I might have to dig deeper into this house especially since their offerings are very affordable. The potency of it's ingredients really can't be compared to the Bond but it smells of quality in it's own right. I would say this one is extremely versatile but eccentric at the same time. Unique. I could see someone like Johnny Depp appreciating this way more than I would ever suspect he'd actually wear Sauvage. It doesn't really have a seasonal, age specific or situational vibe. It's just there. Pleasant surprise and I think a home run by the house of Oscar de la Renta.

Really like this one. I'd be more inclined to call this an oriental-woody rather than an aromatic fougere. It opens with Orange and Pepper and settles down to some really smooth woods. It's a dark fragrance suited to cooler temperatures and more formal settings. If I put out a spectrum of fragrances I own and place pepper (Marc Jacobs Bang) and orange-earthy (Terre d'Hermes) on opposite sides; I'd put Dunhill Desire Black closer to Bang and Dunhill Icon closer to TdH. I'd place Gentleman by Oscar right in the middle. I love all these fragrances so if you do too, then this one is worth checking out; especially at the current price point (at least in Canada). It sits on clothes for 8+ hrs and on skin for about 5. Projection is decent for the first 3 hours. Overall; I like this a lot! The bottle (because of it's height for the 3.2 oz/100 ml) sits at the back of my collection and stands out because of the white rectangular opaqueness. It's glass, heavy and the sprayer is great. Great buy overall and in my fall/winter/early spring rotation for as long as i have it.

A really unique scent, especially in the opening , where you can feel the champagne, grapefruit and cardamom, it has a distinctive smell to it and the booze effect is amped up with a rosemary-coriander combo that creates this fizzy feeling. The champagne adds this unique playful vibe to a more conservative and classic notelist, gives a "classy and elegant but fun" vibe to the cologne. That would be a perfect all year round cologne for a formal setting, dressed-up or going to fancy places. It reminds me a bit of Terre d'Hermès in the mid, without the dry orange vibe, like a more formal but funnier version of it. Tea and vetiver are the most predominant notes on the drydown, and it becomes quite similar to Aura by Jacomo at this stage. It loses a bit of that kick and becomes softer as time goes by, less interesting also, but still pleasing. The opening and first 2 hours are really noticeable and daring though, and the value is great for the price.

This was a blind buy, it really took mme by surprise. At first I just thought it was an “ok” scent and I liked it. But than after wearing it, giving I a full wearing I fell in love. Projection is decent could be better. Someone’s description of an alcoholic-grapefruit is pretty good. You get the champagne accord in the opening combined with the tea note. Very interesting. For some reason this reminds me of bleeker street. It doesn’t smell like bleeker street but behaves like it, without the lasting power. I would rebuy this if I ran out for $20 online. But I picked my bottle up at tj maxx a 3.4 oz for $24.99. A unique scent so I recommend buy.

What a beautiful fragrance, the name is very fitting! Spicy, sparkly, vibrant! Nice longevity and sillage too. The lady likes it as well which makes it all the better! Happy to have gotten my hands on a discontinued gem that I thoroughly enjoy wearing. If you can find it grab it... if you already have it - cherish it! EDIT: Just saw this pop up on fragrancenet and almost crapped my shorts EDIT: Looks like the 100ml are gone. They still have 50ml for $50, fantastic price! Get it while you can! There's a muskiness at the beginning that comes off as mildly animalic, borderline B.O. upon blasting my skin. A few minutes later, then the magic begins. I agree with another reviewer in saying anything less than formal will feel underdressed for this. Even though upscale casual can cut it, this isn't your typical jeans and Tshirt type of fragrance. This is great for a date or a night on the town This is class in a glass. The bottom is made of glass while the top/cap is plastic. This one is a keeper.

New noses will not understand this fragrance. It is an enduring aroma, nostalgic and charming. It's comforting in a self assured and protective way. Not A fragrance for others, only to be enjoyed by oneself and those whom you let close. Many will turn away almost offended screaming "past its time" and will turn to more attention grabbing juices, while those with the mindfulness of body and soul will relish in the emotions this envokes within, and stay humble.

Reminds me of f Ferragamo black. Has an alluring sensual smell. Champagne it is the top Note I smell as it has a slightly tart but smooth feel to it. It is grounded out very nicely with the spices... , tea notes. I definitely would take this over F Ferragamo black because it is more of a distinct alluring sent and a little more interesting then F Ferragamo black.

The slicked back hair and tux rocking cousin of Narciso Rodriguez Bleu Noir and Lalique L’Insoumis. A black-tie affair Dunhill Icon. Terre d’Hermes, but 10 years younger. Moderate longevity, soft sillage. You will feel perpetually underdressed in anything but formal attire, BUT it works fine casually as well.

WOW! Pure sophistication. Very classy and uplifting. Woody, boozy yet bright and invigorating. I get some of the comparisons with other fragrances but this is definitely a stand alone, signature fragrance for the 30+ crowd! Love it!

Good strong aromatic moderate silage and Longevity don't always trust the reviews that you read.. it's a very nice smelling scent...And yes the bottle itself is very cool...Nice strong naturally smelling AmberGris Driving the scent

Found this in a store, haven't heard of this fragrance before. Just one word: AMAZING smell, this one smells like a perfect classic perfume (old school one). The bottle is so original, that makes want to buy it...and I did!!!

I wore Gentleman during a professional conference last month. A lovely lady at dinner commented that she would love to smell my cologne all night long. I have purchased two extra bottles.

This is a no brainer buy at TJ Maxx for $19. Very smooth and creamy soft woody scent, the citrus burns off in minutes. Very interesting compliment getter for the money.

It is a romantic sweet smell kinda addictive. It takes time to develop on skin but once it does it's there.

Terre d'Hermes Hermès - Vibes. I enjoy it.

I'm on a tropical beach drinking ever so slightly sour, but creamy, coconut milk. Suddenly, I'm sheltering from the blazing heat under an open marquee, sipping champagne. Moments later I'm freshly bathed, wrapped in a gown, sipping black tea on a veranda with a backdrop of beach and sea, inhaling the late-afternoon aromas of shoreline flora. The scent is a pleasant dry, woody spice in the dry down. Not classic fougere in my opinion. The cardamom is present throughout - and very slightly reminds me of Lanvin's Avant Garde for men. There is something almost understated about this; a sort of easy unpretentiousness. It probably won't appeal to true perfumistas because ultimately it lacks the sophistication of elite perfumery. All the same, I've enjoyed my time with it. It has lasted well in the warmest summer we've had in the UK for a long time and remains pleasant even after hours of exertion gardening. Señor de la Renta played dominos. So the bottle design is an authentic connection. It certainly has a solid heft, I just happen to think it is failed by the proportions of the 100ml flacon. The problem is it is needlessly bulky (especially for an overnight bag). Scaled down, this eye-catching design could have comfortably passed the 'elegance test'. It is a clumsy oversight that wouldn't happen within more adept marketing departments. Had this detail been more closely considered, they might have had a bottle that was stand alone collectable with potentially interesting marketing options (cf. JPG's torso and its many re-workings). So I'd choose not to have it on display. A case of nearly but not quite. I think this works for all seasons and all ages. The bottle design possibly has a youthful bias, but the scent could be worn by all ages and in all seasons. At the current price point (£20/100ml EdT) it is an interesting proposition and worth stopping by a counter to test. Well done to this legendary brand for yet another excellent value offering.

A posthumous tribute to the most impactful designer of the 20th century, Oscar de la Renta Gentlemen feels very quiet, reserved, and 'nice'. The loud and proud ‘Pour Lui’ past and the head turning of “He’s here”, this is not. Sadly, this is strictly in line with the muted expectations of the present epoch of designer scents. Despite the potential and the imagined possibility, Gentlemen make its entrance in rather quiet fashion, opening with a cool bergamot and ripe grapefruit spritz that wears a cardamom cuff on one hand and a champagne toast on the other, before a minty green, herbaceous accord of Egyptian geranium, rosemary and black oolong tea take the floor, where eventually, a base of amber resins with sweet musky hints, a relatively sharp vetiver and bare honeyed leatherwood finish off the salute in almost a creamy sandalwood likeness... The powerhouse aficionado would probably be adding more unruly accents to his language due to the reduced presence of ‘nice’. Gentlemen is a partial fit to an iconic figure, not a whole kind of love; especially one who set legendary precedents and lived up to the Oscar de la Renta adage of “what makes a woman beautiful”. Worth owning? Certainly, a citrus vetiver, that is sparkling, spicy, creamy and 'nice'. If the ode is more in part to Oscar in his stylish house robe and pajama enjoying a concentrated game of dominoes in the parlor before bed, then Gentlemen succeeds. Truly, a larger than life figure would have warranted a perfume grander and apropos to a timeless past, present and future rather than join the heap of discount bins. Nonetheless, a lovely cheapie that deserves to be owned for the gesture and for being 'nice'!

Oscar de la Renta Gentleman is a total conversation piece bottle. If I remember the story correctly this is based on the games of dominoes he saw in his youth. Not sure if they played British pub rules or not, but that is the story. Gentleman is a rather unique gentleman scent. It opens up with a slightly brut champagne with some grapefruit. Due to the cardamom which I get more than the champagne note itself, it smells more brut which I am not really fond of, I'm more of an Asti guy myself. Anyway, while I get a lot of cardamom, the tea note is strong mixed with the rosemary to add some extra spice to it. The base is mostly vetiver but it comes off slightly sandalwood like. It might be the leatherwood, but I am not familiar with that note. I also get a slightly musky vibe from the labdanum. Gentleman works fine for a number of occasions. It is a spring, summer and fall scent. It can work in day and night but I think it is more of a day scent. It works as a casual scent and a work scent. Might also work as a date scent too. It isn't a club scent and I don't see it working dressed up. Performance is a bit of a knock on it. I get about an hour, hour and a half of moderate projection. It lasts on skin five, maybe six hours tops. This is maybe the only knock I have on Gentleman. Rating this fragrance is hard. Oscar de la Renta is really nice and unique especially for the price, but performance isn't really that great. I think I will rate it 7.6 but I would say get it especially if the price stays as is. This is due to the rumors of it being discontinued.

if you buy this expecting an ELDO remarkable people clone, you may be disappointed. ELDO is light years better - smoother and just overall more pleasing. Anyway - with that said, I bought this with hopes that it could be a diamond in the rough. to me it's forgettable. while it doesnt follow the trendy citrus line - and i appreciate that, i just dont think it's anything to get excited about. sure, if you're new and havent had experience with "mature" citrus fragrances, this would be a nice place to start. But if you have been collecting, or smelled quite a number of scents, i don't think this will knock your socks off. it's not a bad fragrance by any means - it's just not worthy of the recent hype. I know this is coming across as a bit snobby - and i certainly don't want to come off that way - i'm just saying how i feel. if you're looking for a unique citrus, i'd recommend: carven l'eau intense hugo reversed Eldo Cologne hermes tres fraiche all much better in my opion. anyway - not bad, but 4.23 stars? no way.

Boozy, sweet, fruity, citrus, with a slight hint of tea in the fragrance. So what do i think about it? I like it... it's different and likeable... if given the chance. I'll wear this at night time in club, Lounge, movie, theater, it's a date setting fragrance. I used nine sprays...both wrist, behind my ears, back & front of my neck, chest, front and back of my shirt. Will I buy this again?...IDK. Acquired this fragrance today based on the reviews, and I must say that while I'm not prefferably in love with it, it's a really nice scent- especially because of its uniqueness. A gentleman's frangrance that's smoothly sophiscated and sexy at the same time. To my nose it starts off herbal, then gets aromatic and ends with a warm powdery sweetness. Smelling this fragrance puts me in mind of a formal event or a romantic dinner with a glass of champagne in hand. I believe that applying sparingly at night or on a cooler day will amplify the wonder of this manly cocktail.

This is an interesting one. The opening note is very spicy sweet, after the dry down it becomes much the same but a more subtle version. I absolutely love the bottle design, it can be a bit heavy and bulky as the lid is essentially half the bottle size but it's a very clever design. Longevity is just ok, it could be better, the sillage is quite strong though, I always leave a trail when I wear it. To me this seems like it would be a perfect cologne for winter, or perhaps even a job interview.

It's a nice scent, Elegant, Warm and Spicy. A bit mature and generic ! This perfume reminds me of Guess Night but Gentleman is more lighter. Both of them have a medicinal opening ! It opens up with like citrusy and warm spicy then dry down is ambery woody. This is perfect for the spring and fall. The art of bottle design is very wonderful and Unique. ...it’s Dec 22 evening and this is perfect...classy masculine fragrance that if you told me was from the ‘90s i wouldn’t be surprised...who was the perfumer ?...the amber wears quite nicely in colder weather...could the bottle be any cooler ? no it could not ! though the kitsch design prob undercuts peoples acceptance of GENTLEMAN, the 50ml is perfectly proportioned and a distinguished addition to any man’s wardrobe...

This is nice. It's fresh with citrus, tea, woody, floral and light booze notes. There is something about this that grabs you - especially the dry down. However, the Cardamon and Tea notes make it slightly bitter. This reminds me of Aura by Jacomo. Seems to last and project well. An intriguing perfume for men.

Citrusy sharp. soapy vetiver and spicy. The champagne note is accurate too because there's a fizziness to this. I find it to be too sharp at times; once it hits your nose it doesn't leave. I do get the similarities to Terre d'Hermes. This doesn't have that earthiness to it though.

Odd...my nose does not pick up the fresh or champagne notes mentioned by others. what I do get is a very masculine leathery, spicy drydown which isn't too heavy... making it a perfect evening scent year round and a nice day scent in winter or fall. nice longevity.

If you already own a bottle of Ungaro III, then this is a redundant purchase. I have just tested both fragrances on my wrists and the scent is like 90% similar If I had to choose one of them, I would probably choose Oscar Gentlemen

The bottle is NOT cheap plastic as previously mentioned. The bottle is glass, and the cap is plastic. Makes me wonder, how many reviews are done by actual owners of the fragrance vs someone who has smelled a test spray on a card?

This is gonna sound weird but on the dry down I get tuberose note. It also reminds me of exotic Bali hotels and the ubiquitous incense and floral Hindu offering you see there. Smells pleasant though!

it's not bad, but i was hoping for something more fresh, with pronounced rosemary and boozy notes. and i'm pretty sure already having something like this in my collection. maybe lanvin oxygene, maybe issey austral expedition. 5/10.

The bottle is in fact cheap plastic, not well put together in my opinion. The smell, well it was not my favorite. I could swear there is cumin in this fragrance. I get an overwhelming spicy note that reminded me of sweat. Pass for me.

Sharp, modern opening. Very similar to Sexual Tendre pour Homme by Germain, but kinder and gentler with slightly better blending. As a fan of vintage pour Lui, there is nothing here for me.

Blind bought it to get free shipping at discounter web site based on reviews and the bottle. The bottle is tacky and I LOVE IT. This fragrance seems to offer very good performance and longevity, however I am not quite sure I enjoy the smell. UPDATE: After a bit more time with it I can say that I really don't enjoy the smell. The worst fragrance I have. Too bad it's got so good performance. Still the price of the bottle is as cheap as some decant I previously purchased. Gave to my brother in law.

Here we go again. I may return this but I know they will give me hell since it's open.Hopefully they will let me. One minute i like this fragrance the next minute I hate it. The grapefruit is there underneath supporting the watered down yet clean showery "alcohol on a cotton ball" note. I guess that is the champagne It's the note I noticed before in things like Lacoste Challenge etc. The grapefruit is there but it's not a sour grapefruit. It's a grapefruit that has been peeled yet hasn't been cut yet. This performs so good in the winter because u get the alcohol (champagne) with the grapefruit. So on to the bad news: THIS HAS A RETIREMENT HOME ACCORD THAT I CANT STAND! Like walking into the lobby of a nursing home! Boring just like Oscar Live In Love for women! Back to the store it goes!

Very fresh and sparkling at the beginning. After 2 hours it's weird from up close but still classy and fresh from a bit further. Good longevity but erratic projection (or my nose). Certainly worth the price and worth trying. Bottle nice and smooth. The only problem with this fragrance is that I seem to detect (further into the drydown and only sometimes) a vague smell of rubber sealing of an olden jar of pickles. EDIT: Something must have been seriously wrong with my nose. I'm sarting to really appreciate this fragrance for its original "fruitiness". Very good fragrance but indeed it takes some time to understand it.

I like this fragrance. Certainly classy, would go very well with a tuxedo or a suit. The prominent note in Gentleman is amber (kind of get a slight Armani Mania/Nicolaï New-York vibe). Amber fresh. A little dusty throughout which emits from the leather/wood base. The grapefruit, champagne and tea notes can be detected above the amber. The fragrance does mirror the traditional casino scene; an aged room with table games, men in tailor-made suits, leather seats, glasses of champagne, wood panelling and silver pots of Chinese tea. A very well done EDT which comes in a riveting and quirky domino bottle.

I did not like this one very much on first whiff. But after letting the bottle settle, I sprayed it on my shirt just below my chest. Interesting! It's definitely in the family of Narciso Rodriguez Bleu Noir but perhaps spicier (cumin) and a bit drier. I can appreciate a comparison to Sauvage bc it's got a dry freshness, and Encre Noir bc of its arid smell/style, but I think it's closer to Bleu Noir. There's a hint of something fruity or bright that I can't put my finger on (perhaps the grapefruit or champagne??). I like it and I'm looking forward to spending more time with it.

I just got the 30 ml bottle in the mail. After the first sniff, right away I thought it’s similar to a frag I couldn’t remember. Finally, it came to me after reading other reviews. Yes, it has that gentle vibe of Terre d’Hermes which adds some versatility to it IMO, but wanting in terms of performance. Overall, not bad. I’ll give it a 6.5/10 “Let's spread the scents of peace and kindness. The two most beautiful fragrance in the world that will cost you nothing and will get you a totally different kind of compliments” 🙏

Review 6. "Level Up" Champagne dominates. French vibe, maybe French Carribean island scent. Outdoor wedding or nite out. A feeling of double down win on Blackjack at a casino. I've tried making perfumes that turned out rather similar, with which I couldn't get away from the in-your-face sour zest in the opening. Based on how "familiar" this smells to me, I'm assuming this composition is around iso-e super, norlimbanol (scratchy cedar note), rosemary, petitgrain, bergamot and hedione (which would explain why some ladies find it appealing). Maybe black and red currant as well to add to the "champagne" note. So, I can't decide yet if I like it or hate it.

I really hope there are different variations of the bottles, like instead of just the 8 domino maybe you could randomly get a 2 or a 10 domino and etc. It would definitely make them more collectors items. There may be problems with that however within the fragrance community "domino 5 is clearly better than 3, it has better sillage". Still would be a fun idea. Also please let the bottles be made of glass, resin, or some other domino-esque material so it's true to the bottle.

7mehulpatel - thanks for that input - so it's more about that game than any tie to Oscar himself. Very cool. I put this on as my morning fragrance and I am again really impressed by it. This is such a great sparkling, light, semi-sweet fragrance - so perfect for the middle of summer. Agree with picknenders - it's not much of a Remarkable People clone. It's more spicy and tea-like, whereas RP is much closer to a candied citrus.

Much respect to the memory of mr de la renta. Now on to the review; with this little gem i have received more complements than with much more expensive colognes, maybe all the others put together. With this youll get that mature and sophisticated gentlemanly leather aura for the entire day. Great longevity as well, highly recommended. I stacked up with 3 extra bottles, cause for the price theres no going wrong with this.

I tried this one on a paper today. To my nose it smells like a spicy-peppery vetiver scent. I don't get champagne and tea notes, but it might be because it's on a paper. Overall, what I get on the paper reminds me of Bang by Marc Jacobs or Terre D'Hermes-maybe a lighter version of it. Longevity and projection are good. This is a well done perfume from a designer and proved to be better than what I was expecting.

I don't really get champagne from this. I do get the citrus, amber, tea, and more than anything else, cardamom...which I love. This is sweet, creamy, and spicy. By far, this is my favorite men's scent from Oscar De La Renta. It's fresh but not aquatic, sweet but not a gourmand, spicy but not pungent. To me, this is an unusual scent but still really easy to wear. Good stuff (...and I like the bottle).

The bottle is just beyond hideous. It looks like a toy for infants and is simply way too bulky. I mean whats the point of that ridiculous cheap plastic cap? It's just as big as the bottle containing the liquid. Every single tester that I've laid my hands on have had their cap broken into pieces. A real eyesore I'm afraid.

Such an underrated cheapie. I don't understand why it's not hyped. It's such a Spicy Boozy and classy Scent. The champagne note really Shines here and stays always. Vetiver makes it a more round fragrance overall. Longevity is good and sillage is average. Overall good buy
