Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui

This is a classic, refined powerhouse that exudes confidence and taste. Shamus1, RobbieX, krmarich and MrMookie all offer great insight and reviews here. I smelled the original many years ago and loved it - but, based upon various reviews, I chose to go with current formulation initially. It is exceptional. I will revisit vintage in the future, but this is great juice. Leather, patchouli, oakmoss all radiate underneath several layers of deep florals, an amazing carnation-clove note, warm & complex spices, aldehydes, green herbs and a touch of wood. This, to me, is about paradox in a composition - how a blend so strong and bold can wear so sophisticated and elegantly. This is a true aura scent with great projection and longevity. I believe applying this to skin is essential, but let it touch your clothes. It is not headache inducing - it is simply phenomenally rich. After 45 minutes to 1 hour, it calms down considerably and being a unique and wonderful dark, floral chypre with a nice leather base. Unlike anything else out there. People can try to draw comparisons, but I recommend just buying it. It is that good - even in current formulation and the price point is fantastic (as Oscar for Men is such an amazing and unique fragrance for the price). Created in 1980, I believe it is a true classic - and the current formulation is very well done. I feel the atmosphere this creates as it was described eloquently by MrMookie - but, yes, there is something about this scent that takes you to a different place (and time perhaps)...transcendent juice! I love the vibe - macho, confident, a scent for a man who knows what he wants. I don't know what Al Pacino wore in Scarface in the heat of Miami - but I imagine that once he hit the big-time, he wore Oscar Pour Lui with an attitude. This is a bottle of juice that says, "Say hello to my little friend" when you walk in the room! 8.8/10 and a strong recommendation for anyone who loves classic powerhouse fragrance with an aire of sophistication. Current formulation - very good-excellent. **Update** - A must! I acquired a perfectly-kept and well-cared for Vintage bottle of Oscar Pour Lui! Better than current formulation - more definitive notes that separate wonderfully. A near masterpiece!!! Although both Current & Vintage are very good quality, Vintage Oscar Pour Lui is one of the most amazing and awe-inspiring male fragrances made in the last 3+ decades! I have worn this now several times - including a side-by-side wearing with current formulation. Vintage has more note separation and is (while still very potent) a touch more quiet on my skin. The opening of the Current is sharp and a bit "screechy". You need to wait 15-20 minutes for it to integrate & it hits stride in the heart and drydown, but it never gets as smooth or articulate as Vintage formulation, which is sublime. I notice the depth in the basenotes more here in the Vintage - while the top and heart are more pronounced in the current formulation (not that Vintage is incredible as well). I am strictly discussing sheer volume/power! I layered to test and it works fairly well (especially for a full day's scent), but I strongly prefer wearing Vintage by itself. If you choose to layer, apply a nice a full wearing of current (I even touched up after about 5 hours with a few shots). At 8 hours, I applied several shots right on the same spots (both skin and clothes). The feeling of Vintage is just different - more refined, distinct and elegance captured in a bottle. If given a choice, I prefer to have both! The compositions are similar, but complimentary to one another. It's like having a wiser, more mature older brother guiding you through life to have Vintage juice - while the younger brother is louder, wants more attention and seems to always get in trouble. But, when together, the big brother helps point him in the right direction. ;-) 9.5+/10 for Vintage Oscar Pour Lui. Incredible and VERY Near Perfection in scent. As I used the adjective before - this is sublime! True olfactory delight - even more refined than current juice. The composition captures and embraces the magnificent power but is able to create subtle nuances and accords that are just mind-blowing. While earthy and green patchouli blends with the radiant florals, there is a thick plume of smoke and a dusty layer of freshly-grated spices wafting up to your nose...while resting on a bed of oakmoss under a beautiful, rich leather jacket. Gothic, in nature, but retains an aire of sophistication. This is almost impossible to describe in words and notes. There is, simply, no fragrance ever created that is similar to it in both depth & quality. A gorgeous, refined, macho, suave powerhouse with absolute uniqueness - a true classic!! Timeless.

Got Oscar De La Renta Per Lui a few days back, and I was taken a back at how much the opening smells just like Bogart's One Man Show. I dont understand how so many folks disagree that these smell almost one to one to each other especially in the opening! I have both and luckily I love the dna. Fortunately, per Lui has an aldehydic push to it and goes in a slightly different direction at dry-down vs One Man Show, but the beautiful spices and aromatics are quite similar in each fragrance ( That Basil tho😍), yet these are not so similar as they dry-down that they are too redundant. I actually prefer the dry-down of Per Lui because of the aldehydes which help the Leather note stand out a lot more than the leather in One Man Show. Per Lui actually gets more powdery and soapy also bc of those aldehydes and I'm LOVING IT! Now, when I'd fist recieved Per Lui a few days ago I was so very dissapointed bc although it opened pretty strong and gorgeous, it became way, WAYYY to faint (like a very light skin scent) after about only 2 hours (even on clothes). Now, I didn't frete too much bc I've found that some of these classic (horribly reformulated) dna's need to macerate after some air has been introduced into the bottles and I let the bottles sit for a while. Some examples are Lalique's Encre Noire, Encre Noire L'Extreme, Aramis Tuscany, Aramis-Aramis and Estee Lauder's Knowing all had to sit for a while. Both of the Encre Noires took about a 🫢MONTH AND HALF🫨 before they became awesome with good performance/longevity, and don't even get me started on Bently for men Absolute (Almost 3 freakin' months!!) Anyhow, I was gonna wait longer to come back for an update on Ocar de la Renta per lui, but after only a few days and after having sprayed on a good amount a few times mainly to introduce some air into the bottle, there's ALREADY been a pretty substantial improvement to the longevity (LOVE it when that happens! 😁) Sprayed some on my shirt last night before bed to test the performance and I can now still EASILY smell it on my shirt this morning! Even on skin it lasts much longer and stays quite noticable for about 6 hours! Im so very glad its maturing nicely and so quickly. I can only assume that the performance will greatly improve even more in a month or so.. Grab a bottle of this classic GEM b4 it's discontinued! It only costs about $22 plus the bottle itself is really beautiful and classic looking! Oscar de La Renta per Lui has been a TOTAL SCORE!! Hard to believe how inexpensive it is. Like Gigi, Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui is beautiful, complex, fantastic and manly. Great for almost any occasion, but not really on hot, sunny days. I love it, my wife loves it ... so my only conclusion is that I must own this masterpiece. It looks quite bold and manly when you first spray it. The opening is dominated by lavender and aldehydes with nuances of pine juniper. The middle notes retain the fragrance complexity. You get another avalanche of flowers, earthy patchouli, and vetiver. The scent becomes a little sweeter without losing the masculine mood. The base notes emphasize the masculine pace of this perfume. You get a very lovable dryness with a strong leather and oak moss - notes of the 80s - as well as a touch of amber to civilize the scent a little. Woody notes are perceived throughout the development. In terms of longevity, it's kind of beastly. For my skin, the longevity is enough for 12 to 14 hours with 3 sprays. You can sprinkle a little to reach a larger threshold - but no more than 4 sprays. This EDT smells expensive and masculine - like the archetype of the handsome Italian we can imagine in chic Amalfi or Positano. It is indeed a very beautiful juice and unique with its right individuality. Note: My batch of bottles is from 2015. ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Overall rating: 8.45 / 10.00 Recommendation: This is a perfume that I wouldn't want to miss in my closet (yes, I have a backup). There will always be occasions when you want to smell the smart Alfa-male of the evening, but in a discreet and elegant way. Shop blind? The pungency and passion, the mythic manhood, clung onto for dear life, with all one's might, relayed through the echoes left on the scent trail. I present to you Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui. I love exploring sensuality and sexuality as translated through fragrance, particularly when it pertains to man-to-man (however that might be labeled or defined). Many of my reviews have everything from Easter eggs implying this or full-on blatant declarations. I realized I saw very little of it in reviews, I think even bisexual and gay men have a tough time articulating their sexuality through words. So I felt compelled to help fill that void, if you will. I also feel like in an age where any suggestion of masculinity is now frowned upon as inherently "toxic," I want to help swing the pendulum back to a middle ground (spare me the remarks!) and celebrate masculinity as an indispensable part of culture and sex. In another review, we read the following: "Picture a cool as ice, hardened, world-weary vampire bounty hunter with piercing blue eyes whose travelled across oceans of time in search of his one true love: A beautiful divine feminine human who chooses to become the one that ultimately controls and harnesses his never ending appetite for the crimson metallic into a moral compass beyond the known limits of truth and myth." Jeepers, creepers! Let's replace that with a beautiful, divine masculine companion and consider how that changes the tenor—to a bass. Maybe we can choose hazel or brown eyes while we are at it. Now, that's better. Pour Lui's herbs, especially thyme, have a human funk, elevated with aldehydes and tinted with lavender soap. The carnation wrapped in a bready, sweaty caraway. It's a mossy mystery harnessed in leather and shrouded in patchouli. This is all based on an older formulation produced by Parfums Stern. As always, YMMV.

Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui is 44 years old. He's not an old man nor anywhere young but in 2024 now he still seems pretty young at heart and suits any mature men from the 30s. Some of you youngsters may have your dad wearing this as this was hot ass frag in the days and gets the needed compliments too. The notes from the opening to the drydown basically comes from the era where such ingredients and oils are used. I kinda remembered they used to come in longer bottles but the current one I have is a 90ml squarish rectangle bottle. If you are thinking what may be similar to Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui, let me point you to some other frags that have similar smell or vibe of it. Chanel Antaeus, Bogart One Man Show the old og Edt, Quorum og by Puig. May be some of you may get Dior Eau Sauvage Edt vibes especially the vintage and older bottles or the splash on eau Sauvage, Abit of old opium pour homme or something similar in CK obsession for men. Well those above are what comes to my mind. Since the notes aren't simple, I'll just say this is a woody spicy scent that follows a classic old school barbershopy green spicy Leathery oakmossy dna. It's clean old musculine soapy to some. The aldehydes and oakmoss here is old style, with the basil and the rest it may leave you with a green bitter pungent taste. Perhaps for the younger guys this dna may seem intoxicating but for me it's pretty much aromatic and additively so, with the lavender there and the spiciness from the cinnamon for me. The leather and the oakmoss will stand out eventually as the scent progress. Not for anyone or everyone but if you've read through the above, you'll know if it suits you. This is available for cheap at fragx and you'll know why some of us rate this as a masterpiece.

I can see the Antaeus comparison but it goes into several directions, it's still giving a clear nod. It's mostly like that in the dry down. It does not have the chanel quality or the richness or complexity. But if offers a variation on a profile that I absolutely adore. And does it in quite a respectable way for a nice price. It keeps it retro, it keeps it masculine and as others mentioned, it does it in a way that doesn't make it feel redundant. So the main take I can get from it is that it's "antaeus fresh", but with a focus around a type of carnation that is similar to like brouchon's jaipur/pour homme. With lots of calone between the crevices without any balsamics. Like.. sure i will admit, it really does feel cheap around the edges, you really can tell it is lacking in that compartment but it is still so interesting where the little Antaeus wants to be. It's not a straight copy cat at all, as mentioned it's missing all of the balsamic notes for instance. Those shoes are way too big to fill for anything wanting to attempt that. Opening gives me a classic fresh juniper lavender. It got a slap to it but not like the mythical giant Antaeus. The mid settles quite nicely when you get to that soapy calone'd woody carnation. Until it finally goes into the labdanum'd leather oakmoss that feels like a bootleg Antaeus. But as mentioned, a lot less rich and it does stumbles a bit over it's own legs before it gets there. Because its a bit lighter I can be a bit more liberal on the sprays. You can't do that with Antaeus. So I can for sure wear this in slightly warmer spring days while the giant goes to sleep till the season is right to wake up again. It is a keeper. I can wear this while forgiving all it's flaws cuz it still got character!

Gave my bottle to a female friend at work as a gift for her husband several years ago and regretted it ever since. Fast forward 5 years later, finally bought me a new bottle. I honestly can't tell a difference juice wise. Could be the same formulation; could be a new one....who knows?? I basically want to reiterate my take on an older review I've done on Pour Lui. When I smell this scent, I think of an old British Hammer Film. It's the smell of Peter Cushing's vampire slayer kit. Leather bag with blue velvet interior, mineral ladened holy water, wax candles and metal crosses complete with wooden stakes and mallet. All clean and organized. Don't let my view sway you negatively. This scent is still highly wearable for 40 and up. 35 and below could be pushing it a bit. But honestly, if a niche house bottled this up today, they could easily market this as a modern release in 2020. 1980, sure, but this is smooth, rich and well balanced. And although soapy and carnation heavy, it's a very refined, classy clean, and I just don't see how anyone could be offended by Pour Lui, so long as they didn't overspray. Growing up Catholic, this fragrance could easily be described as a candle waxy, Easter Sunday Baptism in a bottle. The waxy/watery feel can't be overstated enough, due to the aldehyde structure of this creation. Perfect for breaking up the sugary sweet, Winter fragrance monotony, Oscar De La Renta is a formal event utopia, and needs to remain a celebrated work of art by today's olfactory standards. A true 10/10!!

Is it wrong to say that I really like this fragrance, even in its current formulation? I have never smelled the old formulation, but I do have a bottle on the way, and I will make a comparison between the two formulations when it gets here. However, I am still really enjoying what is on offer here. The opening is very nice, with a sharp soapiness that is a really the predominant smell of the fragrance. However, the clean soap smell is tempered by spiciness and all the florals, making it quite a complex scent. The carnation is strong, and that reminds me of Boss Sport minus the honey. There is not as much green in this fragrance, especially compared to some of the other masculines from the 80s. There’s a little bit of dirtiness to this fragrance that I think comes from the leather accord. All in all, I really like this and I think it is a steal for the price I paid, $17 for 100 ml of fragrance plus the body spray. it’s not the longest lasting fragrance in its current formulation, but it’s cheap enough to respray without feeling bad about it. Edit: I just got a bottle of the vintage distributed by Parfums Stern. And damnit, it's better. The new version is good, but the vintage is more well-rounded, with more base notes providing a green, mossy bottom for the soapy notes and spices to sit on. Without that, the new cologne feels more soapy and top-heavy. It's the equivalent of listening to music with all the bass cut out. Still enjoyable, but definitely feels like something is missing.

A masterpiece like this, I imagine, would be worn by a person of iconic status. This person is the boss among everyone in the room - a true Alpha male! Yes,he get a lot on self-good looking, always well-groomed in a shirt and dress... No beard - regularly shaved... A vintage Omega Constellation 14 carat gold adorns his wrist. Her hairdo is always neat, her thick, strong hair slicked back with brilliance... A strict, commanding, cold and self-confident look... The vintage iconic perfume would perfectly coincide with the character from the iconic legendary movie The Godfather-He is Michael Corleone... He has everything, he can have everything, he looks great and impossible - always well-groomed, always ready for most things - and with this perfume he just adds the finishing touch - that he has a perfect and good taste for elegance, style and gentlemanly manners! He doesn't need compliments - he knows he breathe perfectly! It would probably even be his signature scent - or one of the most worn for most occasions... It smells mature enough, masculine, clean, beautiful, self-confident and unique enough - to dominate everything around it with its ego, charm and own appearance with such a signature! Love it! When wear this-act and be like a Michael(in good version)-and compliments comes intantly ;)

#48 in my "Tour de Fragrance" A likeable, wearable, very strong but not brutish male fragrance. I'm impressed with how distinct the notes are even to my knuckle-dragging olfactory nerve. Definitely old school, but not at an unsophisticated scent, and EDP longevity and sillage from an EDT at a ridiculously low price. This one is still around forty three years later because it deserves to be. Kind of an amped up, greener, more floral Geoffrey Beene Bowling Green. I gave this a love, even though I am just not a fan of basil in food or fragrances. The basil gives it an opening that hints at mosquito repellant to my nose for about ten-fifteen minutes. But once you get past that it settles into a more leathery/floral/green scent that won't offend anyone, will almost certainly generate notice. Probably not for the carpool or any close space. But it would be 100% appropriate for an open area. In fact this makes me think of Vegas casinos every time I smell it. Given the price, it's an extraordinary scent in an attractive bottle at a bargain price. If this were still 1980 this would be my signature scent, but today it's totally dad juice, even grandad juice. Yet I will still wear this from time-to-time just because I love smelling it and don't really care who does and doesn't like it!

this is surprisingly modern, the lavender is kinda dusty (think yardley lavender soap bar) the aldehyde/lavender combo and the faint sweetness (which i believe is the cyclamen) keeps it modern, young people people into retro style fragrances should get this this does have a similarity to one man show, i think its coming from the leather/labdanum and the carnation/vetiver/cedar combo (maybe idk im not an expert) something in this feels piney like one man show as well but i dont know what it is, not as balsamic and funky as one man show update: its been 40 minutes and its losing its resemblance to one man show, the creamy vanilla like sandalwood has come out, theres a faintness of the lavender and aldehydes from the top notes, hard to make out much else of the top notes. this drydown is worth the wait. this is soapy, but not like one man show, one man show is pine/leather/styrax/carnation soapy, almost like church incense, this is sandalwood/geranium/carnation/cedar soapy. incredibly suave. i imagine that scene in "interview with the vapire" with brad pitt as Louis walking down the streets of paris in his long coat...hopefully coming to sweep me off my feet.

For me, Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui stands apart from Antaeus. While Antaeus is louder and more forceful with its bold rose heart, Pour Lui is more balanced and subtle—an elegant kind of masculinity. It starts off fresh and lively with aldehydes, lavender, juniper berries, anise, and bergamot, giving that uplifting kick to start your day. As the day warms up, Pour Lui unfolds beautifully, revealing a heart of carnation, patchouli, cinnamon, geranium, cedar, and vetiver. This stage feels full of character, bringing warmth and gentle encouragement that stays with you through a busy day. Unlike Antaeus, which makes a strong statement from start to finish, Pour Lui develops with more nuance. By the end of the day, the base of leather, oakmoss, and labdanum settles in softly, giving a grounded, calming close. It’s the kind of fragrance that evolves seamlessly—energy in the morning, confidence in the afternoon, and a serene, positive finish at night. Pour Lui is a fragrance I reach for when I want to keep things refined and calm without losing that touch of sophistication, unlike Antaeus, which can sometimes feel a bit too bold for the occasion.

This is big, exuberant and unapologetic. I've used this for nearly 30 years now, and though the formulation has changed 'slightly', it's still representative of what it was back then. ODL Pour Lui is a brilliant fall/winter scent, and if I had to give it one key note that you'll walk away with it's this: Leather. But there's so much around this to make it deep, captivating, and sensual that you can easily forget there's a heart/base of leather in there somewhere. It's the quintessential definition of what an 80's period scent would be, yet I find it difficult to define anything I dislike about it. Longevity is amazing, projection is fantastic...it's classy in a brash and masculine way. There is absolutely no mistaking this scent for anything else, so it's uncommon to the hundreds of other current fragrances steeped in grapefruit and awash in lightness. I would absolutely recommend this with caveats. If you're under say 35, just forget about this altogether because you won't get it. For those above that mark, find it, sample it, draw your own conclusions on why people view this as such a one-of-a-kind classic.

It's going to be an afternoon out enjoying the arts with my youngest, my oldest, and her fiancé. Since we do matinee theater shows I surprisingly tend to be on the much younger side of who attends, so why not give the audience a familiar smell from when they were my age 30 years ago. I really enjoyed the atomizer nose even before spraying, so I knew it was a good choice. The open is rich spices and aldehydes. Anise, carraway, sage, basil...I get cardamom even though it isn't listed. The juniper and bergamot are certainly there, but this is a Spice Girls show now. Tell me what you want, what you really really want. I wanna, I wanna, I wanna inhale deeply on that cinnamon, carnation, and cedar heart. It takes spraying each part of my body independently in order to best discover these notes because there's so many; it's like picking out individual colors of a rainbow dancing across the melting snow. I get leather, sandalwood, a cinnamon that moves into the base, smoky mossy musk. This fragrance is fantastic.

I bought this on the premise it was cheap and is said to be similar to Antaeus. IMO it's far soapier and brighter than Antaeus but still very close. The latter being higher quality hands down. I wanted to own an 80's powerhouse to enjoy every now and then and this hits the spot beautifully. I've opened up a can of worms now - Paco Rabanne Pour Homme is next on my buy list. I might just end up owning Antaeus because why not. Bring on ELDO Rien and Intense Incense too. ODLR Pour Lui is great if you want a throwback fragrance that is bright and pleasant to wear whilst still giving you that oakmossy, chypre experience. Performance on this is isn't exactly powerhouse (I own the current version). I find it projects well in the first 1-2 hours and then sits close. It does seem to linger around the next day on clothes and is perceptible to the wearer most of the time. That's more than I could ask for at this price. A great entry level men's chypre. I'm rating it 9/10.

Look, I know i'm a nerd, especially when it comes to fragrances, especially when it comes to my favourite ones, but my god, before I started my "enthusiastic fragrance journey", I wouldnt have dared to imagine that complex masterpieces like this even exist. I could go on and write a love letter for this scent, but all I'll say is this; Pour Lui was the scent of my exams, my graduation, my challanges through professional and love life, in a hawaiian shirt, and in a suit. When Kouros is too much, but Drakkar Noir is too little, Pour Lui, alongside it; Antaeus, will lift you up, and just perhaps give you a reason to "lay down". As long as it's in production, I will have it in my wardrobe, and when it's discounted, I will order a stockpile so large, my grandchildren will inherit it. Please do not spray more than 5 sprays, it's truly a gorgeous fragrance, but if oversprayed, can be nauseating. Edit; I love Chanel Antaeus, but I acctually prefer Pour Lui over that.

Oscar De La Renta Pour Lui is that of a dark freshness of leathery woods and floral smokiness. A unique and timeless classic. Haunting and may I say - daring? It is composed of beautiful deep florals, leathery - green herbs and warm spices in which exudes sophistication, elegance, darkness and masculinity. It Is perhaps a fragrance for the complex soul. If not, the soul of a poet hence quoting Edgar Alan Poe. Maybe even Dracula himself, think of Bela Lugosi one can imagine wearing such refined darkly and beautiful elegance. Oscar De La Renta Pour Lui's longevity and silage is Monstrous. I get 8-10 hours maybe even more. This is much more for the colder months and can be easily worn with dark and muted colors (in regards of attire) Try wearing this fragrance during snowy weather... it epitomizes beauty.

The 1980s in a bottle! Very clean and very masculine. A bit soapy in the opening and bitter but definitely dries down to a darker rich and fresh green mossy leathery scent. The leather is toned back and the green moss and other woody notes albeit more noticeable. Also some sweet subdued florals to mix in w the heavier notes in the dry down makes this a masculine powerhouse of a fragrance. A well blended scent overall. Brings back many memories of hanging out w the older adult crowd. This, Polo green, Kouros, and Drakkar ruled the early to mid 80s. Those were the top scents of that era from what I could remember among others. It really is a blessing to see these scents still available and at discounted price it’s really a no brainer not to blind buy because if u are a fragrance enthusiast as myself they will conjure up memories from better times that will live on forever. Now let me spray some Oscar and put on some Duran Duran. Cheers!

Tough to describe since you always have to overspray it in order to get a good impression, the full picture. Basically I don't get the Antaeus comparison. It's generally a marine leather thing, it's so unique I can't put my finger on it. It's cozy yet wide open for all year, since where I'm from we can wear most scents year round. Lovely stuff. This soapy patchouli, leathered trick up yer sleeve has one of the most unique vibes. Where else is there a "mariner or coastal though still classy and dressed" like this? Answer, nowhere else. Blue Stratos is a gateway to this one. If your mate only loves citrus blue sporty scents, get him that one and ODLR Pour Lui. He'll smell like a boss, maybe Giorgio Beverly Hills too if you need more patchouli and perhaps a bit more leather. Oh stop it, stop it..

I don’t wear Pour Lui often, and I was honestly unsure of it the first few wearings. But I’ve grown to really enjoy this one with each wearing. It is a scent I still don’t fully understand, but I enjoy re-examining it each time I wear it, so it never gets boring. There is a dark, moody vibe to the scent. It would be a nice option for wearing to a live rock concert, nothing too formal. It is sweet, spicy, and clean smelling all at the same time. A strange mix that is not easy to describe. The dry down is mostly the same as the opening except it has a hint of powder. Performance is above average and will remain on clothes. Score: 9 out of 10 P.S. - if you haven’t tried Chanel’s Antaeus, this is an excellent alternative at half the price. Would I purchase a replacement bottle? Yes, it’s a unique scent. I like to wear black T-shirts a lot and Pour Lui matches my style. I’ve grown to appreciate this more over time.

Pour Lui comes off as a masculine, clean, musky, white floral, fresh fragrance with green notes, leather, and creamy woods. Personally, I love it, but it's CRAZY how EXTREMELY UNDERRATED this fragrance is in the frag-comm community or the general public. Personally, I think that this is an all-around scent that is perfect during all seasons, except an EXTREMELY hot summer day. Two thumbs up from me, but do not base your decision on me. For any fragrance, read reviews before buying it, but take them with a grain of salt. Everyone has their own opinion regarding smells. Some people love a specific fragrance. Some people hate it. My advice is for you to get a sample of ANY fragrance before you ever buy it. That way, you can assess it yourself and have your thoughts, rather than strictly going off someone else's thoughts and opinions. So, do not let my opinion influence you.

Im loving this one. Never smelled it prior in my life, and this doesn't smell like it's a frag made in 1980. Seriously, this smells more like a mid 90's fragrance than anything, to my nose. Actually, there's a green tinge that makes the OG Kenzo Pour Homme pop in my head, but goes in a totally different direction. I straight up only bought this so i could get free shipping on some other bottles i actually wanted and this ended up being the biggest surprise amongst them. Very pleasant, nothing harsh or abrasive like you would expect from your typical 80's scent. I smell a lot of Carnation here but it doesn't really make me think of any other fragrance in my collection that has that note, so it's quite unique in that regard. This is totally wearable year round, even Summer nights this is doable if you mind your sprays. Man i keep sniffing my arm, this really surprised me.

Mine is from STERN PARFUMS, purchased without box, I cannot get the batch code. It is second hand and I think so that is an older one, perhaps is a vintage. It is fantastic! Rich and thick, soapy almost buttery cool-spicey beautiness. Ingredients in perfect harmony, nothing is shouting out from the blend, but I feel the lavander base with a divine pepper and with a breathful of leather. I'd never think to Bogart OMS, until I'd read below, but yes, there is some similarity but just from very far of it. OMS - current version - is greener and it has a very prominent oak wood aspect with some camphoric note. I prefer LUI, by far. It is a wonderful all-round scent. It may be excellent to a black-tie suit but also to a leather jacket. Noble, manly clearity, without an overpushed machoism. It's an outstanding masterpiece!

I’ve tried a lot of the benchmarks of masculine excellence such as bogart and Antaeus not to forget to mention Lapidus pour homme passing by paco Rabanne pour homme ..... all of these had a character of their own Coming back to this wonderful concoction it is the perfect mix of all of them The perfumer whoever he or she is succeeded in pouring his or her soul into the fragrance Let me add the one I have is a vintage bottle With respect to the fragrances I just mentioned above this one is the perfect rendition of all of them Not too soapy like paco rabanne Wasn’t tame like lapidus (new version) No musty rose like Antaeus Not as linear as bogart It was just perfect Performance is incredible although I heavily oversprayd If by chance you can get a vintage bottle do not hesitate it’s definitely worth your attention

Wow im so sad and disappointed. Although it smells amazing this reformulation litterally smells 40% at best what it did 20 years ago. This is the most iconic fragrance in my life as i grew up smelling it Monday-Friday as it was my dads signature office scent. Both my dad and I agree it smells almost nothing like it used to. Too diluted sythetic and yes, soapy asf. back then it smelled expensive and amazing. As a kid you dont care about smells much and this cologne made me wanna smell good ever since. I wish i could smell the original formulation of this Back then it was a 10/10 Today overall 7.5/10 it lasts pretty good for a reformulation 4+ hrs easy UPDATE: maybe I exaggerated a bit, on the dry down it smells about 60% how it used to..... still dissappointed :(

One of my favorite scents - Oscar de la Renta Pour Lu. Now, you all have to remember that perfume does not always smell the same on every person. My brother didn't like it and smelling it on him was quite bland and a little musky. Strange but yes, the scent apparently changes. For me it is just a wonderful, care free type of scent and strong as well. Lasting around 6 hours. It does hit you at first but then it settles. I don't go telling people you should or shouldn't get this or that perfume as we are all different. As long as this perfume is still around, I will continue to buy it. Not many "old" perfumes are still around .... Versace "Versus" another great perfume which no longer is available is quite sad. Hope Oscar keeps this one on the market.

I love this smell, i have never tested the vintage version, but this made in usa version is a beautiful fragrance in a great price. After 1 hour it doesn't project with only 2 sprays i put on my wrist, but it stays on the skin for at least 6 hours. This is a complex fragrance that starts off soapy and spicy and as it dries down goes through some different phases. This smell exudes confidence, calmness, it is manly in a classy way. I guess that with the most of the old school fragrances is better for someone to track down a vintage bottle, which they have real oakmoss and generally deeper and stronger smell, but this also is very good especially for the price. You can overspray people. Thanks to Chris from scentland who introduce me to this scent.

I'm in love. A sparkling fresh and soapy opening is followed by an herbal-floral bouquet that's both rich and effervescent. After two hours or so it becomes leather and labdanum. Incense and resinous wood throughout. I can't stop smelling it. The experience of wearing this fragrance is a dynamic one characterized by distinct phases and nuanced transitions. There is so much dimension here. In my opinion, best for cool weather, and appropriate really for any occasion from office to date to church. Performance is good. It lasts 6 or 7 hours on me with polite yet firm sillage. For the tactful person--someone who was raised to have good manners. Soap. Leather. Flowers. Herbs. Wood. Incense. I want to take a bath in it.

For my first day at work, my mother gifted me this fragrance. It was my signature fragrance for several years, and it got substituted by others over the years, an so it was completely forgotten. Thirty four years later, just two days ago I saw the familiar silver box at a store in the mall and I just had to buy it. Urgently I sprayed a bit on the back of my hand and was instantly transported to 1986... the same great, elegant smell. I had the pleasure to have known Mr. Oscar De La Renta in person, and congratulated him on this Pour Lui fragrance. For me, it is truly one of the great classical scents.... It has stood the test of time and it is a really relevant one today. Try it, you will not regret it.

WOW!! Just WOW! I finally got my hands on the vintage formulation of 3 Oz of this beauty on Etsy for $150. Best $150 I have ever spent! The vintage Parfums Stern formula is just a different beast. The new formulation isn't even 0.1% of the Vintage potion. Hands down the best smelling perfume for (real) men imo. Any of you ever seen an 8oz version of the vintage? I was just randomly searching on ebay and saw it. Imma put money aside to load up on all the vintage versions available lol, so I have it at least for the next 15-20 years. Do yourself a favor and try to get the vintage formula (Made in France). The reformulation Made in US version smells worse than garbage.

Man, what a fragrance! If that's my thought about current formulation I can't even imagine how great must the vintage version be! The opening is a very spicy, aldehydic green scent, even a little fizzy indeed, very masculine, very 80s and mostly on the formal side of things. The dry down is quite a bit softer, where the florals are more noticeable, specially geranium lavender and carnation, after a while it even becomes reminiscent of Old Spice Classic. Overall a clean, classy masculine fragrance with even a slight soap hint to it. Performance (for the current formulation) 6 hours longevity but the projection goes down drastically after the first 2 to 3 hours.

Ok, so I acquired 2 vintage tester bottles, made in France by Parfums Stearns. WOW!!! Truly unique. On the back of the bottle, there is a small sticker with the descriptions: basilic, basil, geranium, patchouli, mousse de chene, oakmoss. This is an oakmoss hydrogen bomb! The aldehydes and caraway, juniper berries, lavender, basil, sage and geranium all blow up in your face and lingers for hours and hours. As it softens, the carnation, leather, sandalwood and oakmoss sit there, just letting you know that you are the man!!! Its such decent stuff. Longevity and sillage are very, very good. 8 hours easily. THIS SCREAMS QUALITY LIKE AN OPERA SINGER AT A CONCERT...

The made in USA version is not as high quality as the made in France version, but it's still worth having. It's a very beautiful fragrance, but Oscar de la Renta needs to try get the USA version up to snuff with the France formula. Stop skimping on the ingredients, maybe add a little real Oakmoss and tell IFRA to go take a flying leap off a high cliff. They should be bending over backwards to please the CONSUMER, not kissing IFRA's ass. When perfume houses decide they'd rather please IFRA and couldn't care less about the consumer, they end up following IFRA off that high cliff, straight down into oblivion.

Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with Savage Elixir as HotdogLegend said. Not in the beginning, not in the dry down. It may share the classic old school profile, but we can identify it in hundreds of other different fragrances like Azzaro PH, Kouros, Zino, etc. These guys should be more responsible in what they say so as not to mislead others. It's very soapy but strong and complex, so is not for everyone. For more experiented users that apreciate this profile it ́s a good buy. Not for young guys at all. I like it, but not for everyday usage.

I get a mix of aldehydes and oakmoss mixed with myrrh and florals and bit of spice that lasts 30 minutes and then some leather gets mixed in for a while and it is then all gone. By the 2 hour mark I smell nothing, not even on my skin. Edit: over time im getting a different feel from this scent, I don't know if it has maturated or my own perception of it changed. Initially I only got aldehydes, which I liked more. This perfume seems somehow darker and darker to me and the comparisons to antaeus suddenly make sense, tho the longevity is still weak.

I have not worn or smelled this since......yeah....for years !!! One of my first scents that I started on this fragrance journey with. I opted for the current version,did not want to spend bigger bucks on the vintage original (but I am tempted now!). At first spray, I was taken back to those good ole' days. Memories flooded in my senses. Bang ! Instant re-love and comforting vibes from this scent. So, IMO, the reformulation does not matter to me. Love the combo of notes, performace/sillage is acceptable for me. Thanks again Mr. de La Renta !!

A boozy, doozy vampire scent if ever there was one. Picture a cool as ice, hardened, world-weary vampire bounty hunter with piercing blue eyes whose travelled across oceans of time in search of his one true love: A beautiful divine feminine human who chooses to become the one that ultimately controls and harnesses his never ending appetite for the crimson metallic into a moral compass beyond the known limits of truth and myth. The formulation with evernia prunastri is worlds better than other formulations.

Masterpiece! It sets itself apart from many fragrances from the era. Its much more refined and has a freshness that is keeping it from being stuffy and old fashioned. Its persistent but never in a pushy way. Its never boring and almost behaves like a second skin type fragrance. It lingers, never screams. Dark, fresh alluring, sexy, intelligent, sophisticated but most above all it gives me a inner peace, a feeling that everything is all right, which I have barely felt with any other fragrance so far.

I can't believe this stuff is 45 years old! Very interesting scent profile, tried in a Marshall's and wanted to buy it but had bought so many fragrances that month already. Very interesting, you can tell the scent profile is very complex and I have never smelled anything else like it. It honestly smells like a niche fragrance which just shows how over the top stuff from the 1980's was. I will getting my hands on some soon and will leave a full review.

Smells like an old British “Hammer” film. As I’ve stated in a previous review years ago, If you want to smell like the inside of Peter Cushing‘s vampire slayer kit, here’s your chance. Holy water and waxy church candles (aldehydes), with dark leather and metal crosses. I like this more and more the older I get. Plus, I feel the latest formulation is still very respectable. Somehow I have to find a way to display this one on my “favorites” shelf. 9/10

I have a bottle of the USA made version of this and after letting it age for 6 months I have changed my mind from my first review. This is still a wonderful fragrance even when compared to the made in France version. It is more airy and less dense but that might actually be a plus for some people. A beautiful thing in either version. Pour Lui is still THE best Oscar De La Renta for men in my opinion. A solid 4.7 and highly recommended.

Nose Note #1017 In vein of many classics of 80s. If you smelled one, you've smelled them all. The carnation is very typical. A lot of aldehydes, a lot of leather and many green notes. Beautifully made. Imagine Aramis pour Homme or Azzaro pour Homme, but a lot more tolerable. It even has a little of Chanel #5 in it. Masculine leaning, not 100% for men in terms of the 80s perfumery. Satisfying performance!! 7.8/10, great

I was so impressed with this fragrance when I saw it again at shoppers drug mart in Canada I bought another. Right away I noticed a MASSIVE difference in every way. WTF? I thought, what happened, the purchases were probably 8 months apart.... The good one (made in France) The complete disappointment (made in USA) Always read the back. What a bummer.

Love the scent, great Leather Aromatic Fougere. The only downside is performance for now - been testing in hot days of the fall, maybe it will improve during the colder months with less volatility from my temperature/sweat. I've been getting around 2-3 hours to become a skin scent, with it almost fading completely by the 4th hour.

@ Billy Bear peppersteak , totally agree. Made in France bottles even with the modern front on the front still retain a lot of the essence of what made this fragrance sooooo good . The modern made in USA version Is transparent,Weak And an embarrassment. Parfums Stern Versions are the key to Finding something close to the original

Recently acquired 30ml made in France. A man's fragrance for sure, less in your face than PR pour homme. Dries down to a soapy vibe which lingers on your clothes for a couple of days, imo not dated at all, just class. If you come across a vintage bottle (roughly 1€/ml) give it a try! (Havent tried the current formulation though)

Love the basil, anise, and galbanum. My review is for a recent batch. I bet the vintage with real oakmoss is great, but I still like what I'm smelling. Quickly becomes a skin scent, but for the price, this is OK. Got a set of 3oz EdT and 4oz body must for $17... Might work well layered to boost the longevity and sillage.

Men, this is pure nostalgia. I remember stealing this from my dad to wear it to Elementary school lol. I liked the smell even tho it was definitely a mature one, specially for a 10 year old kid like I was. I really can’t make out any of the notes listed but either way this will forever have a special place on my heart.

Walked into the store, saw this fragrance as thought "hey, this dude has the same name as me might as well buy it". Took it home, smelled, and was low-key taken aback. It's smells like a clean-shaven gentleman. The flower undertones remind me of a barbershop. For around 20 USD, this smells really clean.

(2019 bottle) One of the most beautiful scents I've ever smelled in my life, especially after it's dried down for 1/2 hour. WOW. They would be out of their minds to ever discontinue this. This is Oscar De La Renta's BEST fragrance ever. Nothing else even comes close. A 10 out of ten. Absolutely perfect.
