Gatsby

I was surprised at the old school slightly dank earthy accord in Gatsby, a little similar to other masculine fragrances of the era such as Lauder for Men and maybe even Salvador Dali Pour Homme. Although less pronounced in Gatsby. It's as if there were a slightly indolic jasmine and patchouli, although no specific jasmine or patchouli notes is listed (although "floral" is listed as an accord and maybe a patchouli note is hiding in the listed "woody notes".) Or does that old school slightly animalic skank also owe its existence to the honey too, which can have a slightly animalic facet. The top listed accords are honey and sweet, and indeed a nice honeyed sweetness settles in to balance the aforementioned earthy dankness. But it's a different honey-dominant fragrance that the more modern Floris Honey Oud, for example. I was expecting more of the sweet honey, spices and fruity accords to really dominate. But it's really nice. I have a vintage bottle and I don't know if the juice is still vibrant. The bottle is a really nice design but the atomizer on mine does not function properly. Only get a few weak sprays when repeatedly pressing nozzle.

First, I love this Gatsby cologne. For a few years, I missed it and didn't know where to find one. Then one day I smelled "Cigar Commander", and to me, it smelled exactly the same. The funny thing is that notes for the two are completely different, but they smelled very similar to my good nose! Both are the kind of cologne that I might NOT necessarily wear, but could smell them just for comfort. Any shrinks out there?? :)

Before purchasing an overpriced bottle of Gatsby on a popular auction site, I had been looking for a fragrance that contained the similar honeyed and spiced notes but couldn't really settle on anything that was too similar. The closest I came to finding anything that resembled the honey notes in Gatbsy was Killian's Gold Knight fragrance. Frederic Malle's Musc Ravageur was the only fragrance that came close to resembling Gatsby's spiciness. Gatsby is a beautiful fragrance and it is unapologetically of its time. There is nothing on the market currently that comes close to resembling this fragrance, which is a shame as Gatsby is becoming harder to get hold of - it's a near 40 year old release that has gained popularity due to YouTube reviewers. If anybody within this fantastic community can shed further light on the origin of this fragrance and its creator, I'm all ears (or eyes, in this medium).

What a gem this is. I was introduced to this by the reviewer below me and I'm so grateful I was able to try this. In a nutshell, it's a perfect honey and boozy amber with a vintage touch that makes me envision a man in a 3 piece suit having drinks in a speakeasy. This might be my new favorite honey of all time. Rich, classy and classic. Need to test further but so far this is an instant love. Scent 8/10 Performance 7/10

a couple of years after, and about 25ml of the bottle remaining, i gave it a couple of sprays, warm humid day. 29C. and gatsby exploded, spice/floral bomb, and again a bit 'cheap' like a attar wallah shop or a perfume souk on steroids. throwback that was probably wearable in the smoke-filled boozy years of last century. for me, not horrible even if all my nostril hairs get a tight perm.
