Tobacco Rose

Wow! I was definitely not expecting this. On my skin and with my chemistry, I get a jammy rose a la Rose Jam (Lush), on a test strip it smells like a true rose/oud (there is 0 oud here) and on drydown (on me) it smells like a smoky blood red rose. Talk about a chameleon!! On my skin, the opening takes about two hours to settle down. While it’s there, I can smell one of the richest, reddest, most dark roses. It only allows the geranium to lend a slight element of air, with a slightly green/herbal/lemony piquancy. It reminds me of when Rose Jam was packed with the real stuff, and make no mistake, the rose here smells like a million bucks. The formula ain’t cheap, not by a long shot! Slowly, the sweetness becomes honey like. It’s beeswax, but on me it’s more like honey, raw honey with a humongous animalic side. It must be the ambergris combined, because it smells sweet/carnal/dark/smoky. Drydown takes ages to arrive and sillage is heavy all the way through. When it gets there, the rose subdues slightly, and I’m left with a smoky, salty (thank you true ambergris!) rose, that is kicking the last remnants of honey. I was expecting something else, and once again in true Papillon style, I get something completely different, but 100 times better. There’s an unparalleled richness, a herbal quality, it avoids cliches and becomes one of a kind; This is Rose with a capital R in all its dark crimson glory. Natural ambergris and honey/beeswax anchor it to the skin, just like oakmoss used to do it in the past. Do not expect a light or modern perfume. While not vintage smelling, Tobacco Rose is made in the old fashioned way; art, skill and quality. This is for those who love their roses as deep as they get, with lashings of animal essence and a dark green halo that oversees the development. And even if you don’t like roses, or the idea of them, try it. You can confirm, or change your mind, if you try a true rose in all its glory! Stunning! FBW!

A truly splendid and dandy tobacco-rose fragrance. On my skin, the tobacco leaf comes through strongly. When I smell this perfume, vivid scenes appear before my eyes: an opulent living room of the 1980s, a time of unrestrained vitality. Not the modern, Scandinavian-style interiors of today, which often lack artistry and feel monotonous, but a space adorned with carved wooden furniture of character. A mahogany desk stands with a Baccarat ashtray placed upon it, holding not a cigarette but a cigar. A madame enters, handing over a cigar cutter to her guest and, while at it, arranges a fresh bouquet of roses into a vase. It is unmistakably the atmosphere of the wealthy and indulgent gatherings of the 70s and 80s. This fragrance is not only suited to those who care deeply about furniture craftsmanship, but also to people who are devoted to vintage clothing. If someone has such a passion for vintage attire but wears only light, trendy perfumes, I personally find it disappointing. To me, anyone who loves vintage and classic aesthetics should have the presence to wear a fragrance like this. I am a woman, yet I adore the romance of this scent. P.S. — I’m a former smoker and familiar with the scents of cigarettes, cigars, and raw tobacco leaves. What truly puzzles me is that some reviews claim “there’s no tobacco note.” I wonder if those reviewers are aware of the wide olfactory range tobacco can have. Papillon’s Tobacco Rose perfectly captures the smell of raw tobacco leaves, beautifully rendered through other supporting notes. Similarly, Hiram Green’s Slowdive contains a well-crafted tobacco accord, even though some describe it as “only honey.” The tobacco is definitely there — skillfully expressed and harmoniously blended.

Probably my favourite rose fragrance...and the one I feel very comfortable wearing as a man because this one is a bit dark, earthy, and mysterious. This is not your jammy, sweet-tooth, or Middle Eastern rose. This rose has a velvety texture to it...and it has a richness or depth to it. It definitely feels more natural than anything and presents itself as of the earth. But what sets this apart is the very natural sweetness from the beeswax that is ever so slightly lurking in the background...it adds some freshness and a hint of animalism. I definitely get the oakmoss and I believe it's responsible for giving this rose a slightly earthy/soil feel to it. But then there's something else that I can't quite put my finger on - it's like an X-factor...not sure if it's the ambergris but whatever it is, is responsible for whatever freshness or lightness that exists here...it adds a sort of soapy feel to the scent...but it's very softly done. Wish I was better able to give this fragrance its due with a better review...but I think this is a masterpiece. I will be getting a bottle. This straddles the line perfectly between a wearable niche fragrance that gives hints of artistry/eccentricity. Lastly - the elephant in the room: no, I personally don't pick up a recognizable tobacco note but from what I read, the perfumer's intention was to re-create the smell of a particular rose garden she happened upon that gave off a dark, smoky or earthy aroma - and she decided that the kind of rose flower that gave off this smell would almost be in its own separate subcategory - the Tobacco Rose. Enjoy.

A lush, velvety, extremely sensual, crimson rose. I smell moist hay, sticky balsams, a civet-like animalic note, and honey-dipped rose petals. Tobacco Rose is a celebration of the night. It is a perfume I would wear if I were going to see a show at the Moulin Rouge. It makes me picture velvet curtains, elegant black dresses, and skin illuminated by candle light. Tobacco Rose stayed on my skin for 14 hours before I went to sleep for the night. A few hours in, the hay note faded, and the perfume headed down the rose confiture road. I happen to like jammy roses. What sets this one apart from the rest is the ever-present animalic note that gives it a certain edge. I adore the entire Papillon collection and wear every single one of them. I crave them. While Anubis, Salome, and Angelique are equally beautiful and sensual in their own ways, when I wear Tobacco Rose, I start having thoughts like, "I am a beautiful woman!" There is just something about this juice that makes me want to get my hair, makeup, and nails done and just bask in the glory of being a woman. It's so unlike me to talk like that! This velvety red scent will be perfect for the turning of the leaves and the crisp breezes. Dark rose perfection. Update: Six months later and was STILL craving this beauty. Had to make it mine.

Surprisingly, I am utterly smitten with this one. I say "surprisingly" because (a) I've had the sample for six months and I had dismissed it as meh; and (b) I am not a rose person (or at least I thought I wasn't). While this is unmistakably a rose, it is thankfully not a bright, cheerful rose. Nor is it a "dirty" rose, like Eau Suave (which I like) or a very dramatic one, like Portrait of a Lady (which I love, but don't know where I would wear). It is certainly not a tobacco rose, as others have said - no hint of tobacco. So what is it? It is a rose tempered by what I think is hay and beeswax and what apparently is moss, which gives it some earthiness and tones it down (a good thing, in my book). The moss plays in Tobacco Rose the role that patchouli plays in Lumiere Noire. It is warm, discreet and versatile and perfect for autumn. I have worn my sample at work, in the evening and on the weekend. On my perfume-eating, sillage-killing skin, longevity is amazing (more than eight hours), while sillage is discreet (although a colleague did compliment me, but we were working side by side). I have now placed it on my Want list. The only thing is, I would like to do a side-by-side testing with Lumiere Noire, as I need only of the two. Decisions, decisions.

Finally a rose didn't overpowered by sweet notes or spices. I was dreaming about using this perfume last night.. I recently purchased this one and couple of others. I realized i wanted to use this even though there are some fragrances waiting me to try them for the first time.This means i had a crush on this fragrance, which doesn't happen to me often especially with rose fragrances. It's a rose that doesn't smell jammy, sticky or overly spicy. In this perfume, Liz Moores's usage of rose reminded me of Serge Lutens Fille de Berlin. It's darker, less pungent but sophisticated. It's a must for me, because i love gothic rose fragrances and this is one of them. Though it keeps a freshness due to ambergris and peru balsam after few hours you can totally smell beeswax and quite strong oakmoss. It's almost feels like a sunny day but with cold wind. One moment you fell warmness and then two seconds later you feel chillness. Thank you Liz Moores, this is spectacular.

It's not random, even if it's not a complete disclosure. jtd, quite a scroll down below and quite a few years ago now, left an incredibly insightful review that should give context to Tobacco Rose that so many clearly are looking for: this is a tobacco accord of fresh, green, growing tobacco, not the dried tobacco we are all so accustomed to in perfumery. Does my nose recognize this version of tobacco? No. But no matter....I adore Tobacco Rose. Metallic, wet, but not too green the way some wet roses can go. I get no smoke, I get no ashtray. A dark red rose, drenched. A speck of blood on your finger after pricking it with the rose's thorn in a rainstorm. And "rainstorm" is key. To me, Tobacco Rose ultimately smells of the most refreshing, thirst-quenching rain after a long, long drought. Strong, confident, self-assured, but not at all haughty or aloof. Contemplative. Perfect.

I’m a huge fan of dark and deep smoky-honey-floral fragrances. This one has replaced Mendittorosa Sirio (which is boozy rather than smoky, and also includes vanilla, my most-hated note in fragrance) as my new favourite in this category. Now I have no idea what tobacco smells like, and any scent associations I make to might just be because of the name of the fragrance, but it opened as a dark red rose enveloped in smoke. The beeswax entered later and introduced a gorgeous golden quality to the fragrance - vibrant rose petals turned into rich rose jam. Around two hours later the animalic ambergris presented itself. I also think it’s more green at this stage from the oakmoss, which I didn’t notice in the beginning. This makes the fragrance very marine-ish which I don’t particularly like, but it’s better than a vanilla base note. I feel so elegant and powerful wearing this. Completely unisex in my opinion, I think it would work for anyone!

I am very picky when it comes to rose perfumes, far too often I find they’re either too cloying and jammy, or too pale and pathetic like cheap rose-water. Tobacco Rose is unlike either, a monumentally impressive rose which has no need to shout for attention like some, instead it seduces quietly, powerfully. I’m not sure where the tobacco aspect is hiding, but the scent is surprisingly light and airy. The roses are sweet and oily, like a pink bushel thriving in the spring, as the shimmering morning sun glistens against the lapping waves of the sea in the distance. There’s a subtle green stemmy facet to the rose, thorns and all, tempered by the alluring saltiness of ambergris. Such an unassuming perfume, which caught me off guard and captured my heart from the very first spray. This is one which absolutely must be tried on skin, I had tested multiple times on card before but had never fallen for it as hard as I have tonight.

A Rose at the Eden's garden... If you like rose in perfumes and you haven't tried this, you are doing something wrong. If you do not like rose in perfumes and you have not tried this, you are doing something wrong too... This could be my favorite Rose Perfume ever. It is clear, natural smelling, delicate but strong, and the support given by the Oak moss and Ambergris is brilliant. So classy and refined. This could be the "day-version" of Portrait of a Lady, taken out the patchouli and the touch of incense. To my nose this one is much more natural smelling, but still strong and powerful. Men and women can pull this off. Easy rose perfume for a man to rock it... Tobacco is nowhere here. The closest to tobacco is the anxiety provided by this juice when you have tried it and you do not have the bottle in your self... Uniqueness: medium Scent: 9.5/10 Performance: high Would I buy it: Yes (a must for rose lovers)

Oh, let me compare thee to a summers day - because you're NOTHING like one! It's was a sultry hot night when I left the house, but I'm glad I took a coat. I'm now wearing it, after pub and club hopping on this summer's night in the early 90's. Smoking was still allowed indoors, and lingered on your clothes long after you left the venue. But the tobacco is sweet, and has mixed with the heavy perfume that filled the room; a seductive rose, and the smell of the beeswax that sheened the bar, sensual, what will become a reminder of the night that was filled with booze and laughter and smouldering looks. It lays thick around me, as I wrap myself into my coat and head out into the early morning. As I walk home by the river, I can still smell the oh so sexy rose, but she's balancing beautifully on the honey beeswax. Goddamn, that was a great night.

Throughout perfume sampling, I have made the discovery that tobacco in a scent can make or break it for me. With a unisex scent, if it has tobacco in it, most scents suck up the tobacco on my husband's skin and leave the floral/other notes, and on my skin it's the complete opposite. Same goes for leather notes, those stay on my skin while my body sucks up only the good stuff. This one, Tobacco Rose, is the first perfume that kept its rose note on my skin for the whole duration and the tobacco is but a side note that gives it the animalistic edge. I consider putting it on my wishlist as it has the sultry velvety feeling that none of my perfumes hold.

This is like tauer's incense rose but tamed down citrus and incense replaced w a more subtle tobacco. Very interesting composition and it is growing on me very fast Edit update** so I'm going to stick with this smelling similar to incense rose, because it's the same rose note. There's more depth with this composition. They are both fighting for first place right now Bc they are both very well rounded compositions with very high quality. There's a overall pleasing quality of rose, tobacco and incense here with a little citrus to brighten things up. I think the ambergris realllly sets this one off guys. I have decided I am going to pick up a bottle :)

One of my favourite rose scents. My crisp crimson rose, velvet to the touch, dripping with bitter honey. Drops of water on the leaves, earthy note underneath and a slightly charred toned down edge of lovely dry tobacco. This is luxurious, deep, grown up and sophisticated, in all good ways. It makes me feel uber feminine with a note of power, and very sexy. Cocktail dress, heels, whiskey sour on top of a tower across from the Bund in Shanghai, his jacket on my shoulders as the wind brings chill from the river. One last smoke and we're off. Yes, Tobacco Rose is a success story. Try it.

LOVE! A very green and stringent rose. Classy and easy to wear. Rich and a bit earthy background to the flowers, not too sweet despite the beewax and balsam. Great performance. I get a lot of geranium and hay not listed here, not sure about the ambergris though. Edit. Used this alot ladt week. And I only fall more and more in love with it. To me this is a true summer fragrance, the rose, geranium and hay are so green, fresh and natural. Will probably work all year, but surprised (scandinavian) summer is not voted higher. This is green, not a cozy wintery tobacco scent.

Tobacco Rose is to me a gorgeous nuclear rose bomb. I've got to apply it with caution, one spray max, and it radiates a beautiful, intense red rose with an earthy vibe, something like warm pavement smells when the rain first touches it. I get no tobacco at all. It really is strong on my skin; one day I made the mistake of applying two sprays, and was mercilessly strangled all day. And it lasts and lasts, and doesn't let up.... One bottle may be enough for two lifetimes. If you love roses, you might love this perfume.

Ughh I can’t trust fragranticas note breakdown at all. Where’s the tobacco and the notes are all wrong. I think they just make notes up in here. I’ve seen this happen way too much. As for the fragrance, no I don’t much like it, this one’s for the guys. I don’t like most tobacco perfumes. A few that I do love, use sweet smelling tobacco and it’s beautifully blended, so it doesn’t stand out on its own but rather a team player and not making the perfume smell like an ash tray. This one would be very nice on a man.

My first public wearing of Tobacco Rose by Papillon Perfumes this evening. A sultry and brooding rose, she is moody, slightly aloof and very sophisticated. She unveils herself in layers, through which her constituent parts are shown as distinct yet perfectly blended. This rose is mournful yet ecstatic. The rose/moss combo creates a gentrified version of classic 80s rose/patch/moss scent, "Zino" by Davidoff. I really recommend this for well-dressed, suave guys!

I get green, dewy rose and no tobacco, which is exactly the kind of profile I like. Quite straightforward and unlike other creations from this house. A little bit soapy which adds the right amount of vintage vibes. It transports me to what I imagine to be early spring in the English countryside, walking around a rose garden in light rain on the grounds of a big old mansion. Longevity is quite good. Full bottle worthy for any rose lovers.

Lovely! An ambergris heavy opening that quickly turns into a sweet yet sophisticated rose. Very grown-up. Oakmoss and beeswax support the rose nicely in equal measure. After the ambergris gives way for the rose it remains in the background and never disappears. All in all an elegant fragrance, a safe choice for any occasion without being boring. I get half a day from x3 sprays. If longevity was better I would probably invest in a fb.

This rose shares resemblance to Sa Majeste La Rose but less dewy and sweet, more grown and velvety. There's no tobacco in this, only a soft earthy green accord as background support for the au naturel beauty of the rose. Still waiting on the animalic drydown, but so far I very much enjoy this one. Update: yup, there's definitely something darker during the drydown. It's not exactly animalic but it's mossy, slightly smoky and alive.

A subtly animalic, woody rose. I used to think I didn’t like rose in perfumery, but this completely changed my perspective. The balance here is exceptional - refined, textured, and never overwhelming. The first rose fragrance I genuinely connect with. There’s something incredibly well calibrated about it. The rose feels grounded rather than sharp, softened by woods and a subtle animalic warmth. Sensual and quietly magnetic.

I know there's no tobacco absolute in this, and Liz M created a tobacco accord, but I don't smell anything like tobacco. What I get is a sticky, honeyed rose with a hefty real ambergris base. On my skin it smells like a Dusita, reminding me of Rosarine and Oudh Infini, though it's more restrained than those perfumes. It's a lovely perfume with many facets unfolding delicately over time, but not one I feel is for me.

Stunning rose / ambergris combo. A class act a little too subtle for my preference but nonetheless beautiful. You mainly get the rose wrapped or lifted ambregris and a little beeswax not animalic though its just a subtle hint. I get a little but of subtle musks as well. It is slightly in the realm of hazy rose by monegal where that is a little less natural smelling than this but performa way better.

The best perfumes don’t need another endorsement because Favabeans describes this scent perfectly, I can’t add anything further. I can confirm that this is not a tobacco perfume (the name almost scared me off), instead it is one of the most beautiful and lasting Rose centric perfumes I’ve ever worn. Dry down is transformative with the ambergris note. Major performance....and I’m in heaven.

Oh yes, I really like this. Rose by the bucket load that is tempered with tobacco, oak moss and softened with beeswax and ambregris. There is only a touch of tobacco with this rose but its there. Its had a transforming effect on this voluptuous rose. There is an earthiness. Its a sophisticated and chic rose. Moderate sillage and longevity.

This does not smell like any other rose parfum I own. I own and love many rose and Oud combinations but I just fell in love with a rose mixed with green notes or accords. I love the crisp opening and that it truly smells very natural, like I am smelling scents of a flower garden and a wooded area.

Ultra realistic rose soliflore, deep and a little bit ashy. Not a jammy rose, more womanly than girlish. Started as a pure rose on my skin, gradually transformed into a very sensual tobacco scent. I've never smelled a Liz Moores fragrance I didn't love; it blows my mind that she's self taught.

The smoke note is very astringent for me and I thought it would turn me off, but it combines with the sweet heady rose and warm animal base for a very addictive and very sexy scent.

A bright and potent rose scent that becomes dirty, earthy and lasts forever. Quickly becoming my favorite rose fragrance. Absolutely love it.

beautiful scent, lasts well on your clothes too

This is a beautiful, earthy perfume. It uses an oak moss and hay to form the dark, dusky notes suggestive of tobacco. The notes listed for this by Fragrantica are missing the hay. The rose is very strong and pure in perfume, and the tobacco, which is really the hay fragrance and not a true tobacco, is evident right away and forms a pleasing contrast to the sweetness of the rose. Forms a type of chypre, even if not a classic one. I've worn the sample all day today, and I think it's going to be a perfect fall cologne. Where I live we don't get very many cool autumn days, but it still makes me think of a cool, brisk day and bundled up in boots and coat, walking in a wooded area and coming home to a nice fire. I tried all three of these new perfums from Papillon Artisan, and Tobacco Rose was my definite favorite. To me this could be both a daytime and evening perfume. I don't think it's exotic enough to be relegated to an evening out fragrance. It's mild enough to be worn in a fragrance tolerant office place. My only beef is it's a little too mild as far as sillage and longevity, but I'm willing to put some in a purse atomizer for touch-ups. I think it's worth it. ***Re Tortola's review: I got my sample from Indigo Perfumery, which I think is the only stockist in the US for Papillon at this time. I seriously doubt they would water down my 1 mm sample! Since Tortola is, after all, a perfume blogger and is friends with an actual perfumer, I'm sure they're aware that different body chemistry can affect the longevity of a perfume for a wearer.

On the opening I can smell a big lush red rose though I get no tobacco whatsoever within the scent. Now the rose is front and centre to this composition though facets of the smell have been changed with other notes that subtlety alter the smell. And this makes the scent very interesting especially if you love roses. The hay and moss notes give the rose a subtle earthy dryness whilst the ambergris adds a slight salty sweetness. And I believe the beeswax just rounds out the sweetness of the overall smell. So when you inhale this scent the rose almost smells mystical as you get a lush red rose which seems to be different from the usual rose scent that you are used to smelling. It is a very well crafted rose scent as it makes you stop and think that this is different but you cannot put your finger on it without much thought. For me as a man this rose fragrance though imo very good I just feel I could not pull this one off. And this is down to the rose been too lush and intense for my taste. I have the same problem with Lyric Man from Amouage. For rose lovers this is a great mystical lush red rose with different facets that makes sampling this one a pleasure.

In contrast to rose fragrances mixed with oud, sweet notes, or more rose, Papillon's Tobacco Rose is an earthy rose, due mainly due to the hay, I imagine, though it smells somewhat like patchouli to me. In this respect it is a more distinct masculine rose fragrance than most I've smelled, which seem unisex or (more likely) feminine. Tobacco Rose's opening is pretty harsh, reminding me of Tom Ford Tobacco Oud, but the dry down is really where it achieves its homeostasis between the two eponymous notes and some of the other elements---hay, ambergris, beeswax all seem to be there, and I'd have to use my imagination for the balsam and oakmoss. Projection and longevity are strong as expected, and I would definitely characterize this as a masculine cold weather scent, which could work for both day and night. The price ($160 for 50ml on Lucky Scent) isn't wholly prohibitive but given that it's unlike most rose scents, this needs to be smelled first, and should by fans of rose that prefer an earthier, less sweet, less common angle on rose. 7 out of 10

I've tested this twice last week. The rose reminded me of the one Andy Tauer uses in his perfumes. I have the amazing 'Vanilla Flash'. Fortunately, nothing to do with Noir De Noir (Rosewater) or Portrait Of A Lady (Patchouli). Natural, high-quality rose is nice for the first few hours joined by beeswax's sweetness at the 3rd hour. Both times I said to myself nice but expensive for what it is. Then at the 4th-hour ambergris and oakmoss joins which makes this unisex and much pleasant smelling. This goes for another few hours. The weather is warm these days so I could smell on my open skin but I will test this in cool weather to see how it projects beneath the clothes. Vanilla Flash is a better performer than this. But if it will project for a few hours under my shirt in cooler weather I may think of a purchase. Perfectly OK for the office. Do not judge it with the first few hours. One of the best (salty) dry downs I've ever experienced!

I’ve gone through a Rose phase. Initio Atomic Rose and Guerlain Oud Essentiel finally hooking me into Rose. Amongst some FB delivered with Rose I also received a sample of this. I am a huge Tobacco fan so I was super keen to try. Gorgeous scent, short life low Sillage. It starts with effectively to me is a light but sweet dark rose on top of cigarette ash. This I love but after 5 minutes the tobacco fades and the balsam joins in muting the experience. It’s still nice but the scent is then somewhat generic and anosomic losing its impact, the oak moss which is subtle giving a bit of depth. Unless nose is to skin any Tobacco connotation is not really valid. It almost smells like an alcoholic Rose drink lol as after 10 minutes the beeswax starts wafting giving it that hops and barley feel too. I would still purchase this though for the Rose scent over most though. I will update after I’ve given it a few more wears.

All rose, no tobacco. This is a lovely, deep red rose soliflore. Big, heartbreaking, jammy damascena rose; winy, honeyed centifolia rose; lemony-green rose geranium; rose, rose, rose. It’s as poignant as Une Fille de Berlin but without the darker, black-pepper or earth nuances. The base dips slightly into dark resins – perfumer Liz Moores mentions tolu balsam, which sounds right. And I definitely feel a touch of honey around the edges. Tobacco Rose is concentrated, but sits very close to the skin and becomes faint quite rapidly, within three hours. It’s so purely rose that I don’t think it has a gender. Wear it if you like the smell of roses, don’t if you don’t. It’s not an over-the-top dainty or fruity “feminine” rose, but neither is it drowned in “masculine” dark-and-smoky notes. It smells like the distilled, concentrated essence of roses.

It starts with a beautiful bold rose, a dark one but very crisp. The oakmoss then joins the plot quickly followed by ambergris and we are now in the vintage floral-chypre territory; we start getting a bit of honey a few moments later. The quality of the ingredients is obvious, nothing feels synthetic or screechy. Let's not forget, no tobacco. Maybe the name was meant to take us off. Despite the vintage style, Tobacco Rose smells in no way dated. I have to say that it is actually office friendly; a shocker for this house. It is a very interesting and beautiful fragrance but quite intimate, an arms' length silage on uncovered skin. It is well balanced and and a very successful chypre. Beautiful crisp flowers, just enough oakmoss to play support role, ambergris and honey to create some sensuality and close the bow nicely.

Dried brown roses soaked in bee jelly. Cool geranium, incense and mint. A hint of tobacco evokes a special tea aroma. This part has a similar feeling to Masque Milano Russian Tea. I received this piece and immediately thought of it. The smell is obvious, but it does not choke the nose. In fact, tobacco accounts for a very small proportion. Unlike PHI Une Rose de Kandahar produced by Tauer Perfumes in 2013, Tobacco Rose is a fragrance closer to the definition of "good smell" to the public. (The tobacco here is a bit special, and it is very different from Tauer. It is speculated that it may not be real pure tobacco. The main body is a small amount of ambergris to suppress the sweetness of Bulgarian rose and honey. After verification, Tobacco Rose has two types of Bulgarian rose and May rose pure dew.

The last Papillon Artisan fragrance I acquired to complete my collection (until Epona is released) and it isn't my least favourite but it definitely isn't my favourite either. It is a truly beautiful rose fragrance that opens with this slightly damp and very real smelling rose. It's very nice and inviting and personally it may be the best rose I've ever smelled. The issue comes from the fact that I personally REALLY don't like rose fragrances. I find the note to either be too feminine for me to personally wear or too soapy and boring. For unisex rose scents, the latter is usually the case. Here I don't think the rose reads soapy and yet I still find myself not loving it as much as I had hoped. The best rose I've smelled and yet it just doesn't do much for me 8/10

Comes roaring out with a gorgeous, velvety and true rose. Just a dewy deep red rose, no tobacco. I don’t get ashtray, I personally don’t smell that at all. There is a bit of smoke and a little spicy greenery to back the rose and a muted amber base but the rose is the star. This is one of those tricky fragrances that creates a dense scent bubble for the first hour and causes you to fall in love, then commences playing hide and seek. You may think you can no longer smell it and then it will reappear and remind you of its beauty. Fairly simple, easy to wear and approachable which isn’t the case for all this brand’s offerings. I feel like I might need a degree in perfumes to understand some of their other fragrances but this is just a rose. A beautiful rose.

Golden-emerald coloured chypre with opulent rose on the center stage. Mossy, salty, balsamic, floral, even a bit fougere... feels very classic, solemn, complex and develops slowly. Drydown reveals itself as a slightly more masculine red rose. The quality of materials used is evident as well as the artistry of Liz Moores. This perfume, as many her creations, truly demonstrates her knowledge and appretiation of the classics. From time to time - especially when I encounter an exquisite rose perfume which doesn’t really suit me - I wish I was more of a “rose person”. But, I am not, so rarely I find a rose I could truly love... So long, Tobacco Rose - my heart already belongs to another rare salty-mossy rose (Encens Mythique d’Orient).

This is a wonderful rose-centric chypre fragrance. On me it opens with rose, moss, and ambergris. As it dries down the ambergris dies down a bit and I get rose and oakmoss over a deeper amber and beeswax. As others have mentioned, there is no tobacco note. Perhaps there is the effect of green tobacco leaf. The rose is slightly watery and green, however there is a depth to the fragrance. Projection on me is moderate to soft, lasting about 7 hours. In my opinion it opens unisex, becomes slightly more feminine, and transitions back to a unisex dry-down. I really enjoy this a lot. If you are a fan of rose and/or chypre fragrances then I would recommend giving this one a try.

Damp tobacco leaves, ash, a grandfather's hug, and a dead rose bud. Low sillage at first, but full of character. It seems to increase in strength over wear time, and it lasts around 6 hours. It's a beautiful perfume that has something to say. This smells like a box of keepsakes discovered in an attic. When you open the box, a cigar rolls towards you. Then you look through a stack of black and white photos of a couple you don't recognize, and you notice the box also contains dried rose petals and a few handwritten letters. This perfume gives me the feeling that somehow I remember something that happened to someone else, before I was born.

A fantastic quality rose scent for rose lovers. This opens up quite green and natural smelling. After a few minutes, a candied sweetness takes seeps through, yet this sweetness is not overbearing or child-like. Everything about this fragrance exudes class and quality. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to understand why it was named as it is. There is no indication of tobacco in this scent, and no matter how hard I try to convince myself that there is some tobacco accord or feeling lurking within, I simply cannot.

Beautiful, natural, high quality rose fragrance. I don't get much tobacco out of it, the rose is rather young and greenish. I haven't tried it in hot weather but I believe it would be suitable for it. The easiest wear out of all Papillons, which is not to say it is boring - sometimes, even if a fragrance is rather simple, the quality will speak for itself and that is exactly the case here. I am tempted to get a full bottle. If it wasn't for the price point, I would not hesitate.

It has a striking opening that quickly fades into a boring & vaguely spicy leathery drydown...or so I thought. Every time I brought the fragrance to my nose after the opening stage, I question "Is that all there is?" As I went about whatever I was doing, I'd frequently get a whiff of something magical! How is the sillage more fragrant & nuanced than sniffing from the source? I wonder if it's the magic of ambergris...This fragrance bounces between "like a lot" and "okay" for me.

Papillon Tobacco Rose (2014) - rose ambergris - @papillon_artisan_perfumes ‘s Liz moores creates a perfume with a concentration on Rose. Heady Bulgarian mixed with dewy & fresh Rose de Mai at the top and heart notes. I also get a piney note, not really tobacco from balsams mixed with an animalic and honey-like scent that resembles Beeswax. So you get this balance between Roses and Honey contrasted by Pine. At the base, I get Sandalwood, Oakmoss and radiant & salty Ambergris.
