Aziyade

Aziyade is a novel by Pierre Loti from 1879 that is semi-autobiographical nature, telling the story of Loti himself, supposedly, falling madly in love with a sex worker whom Loti gave the nickname Aziyade, a Circassian woman from the area that is now, roughly, Southwestern Russia, north of current-day Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Circassia was conquered by Russia in a war lasting from ~1763-1864 during which time the Russians exiled or killed nearly all of the Circassian people in one of the longest and most genocidal wars in human history. The novel describes "Loti's" love affair with Aziyade, and his love of the Turkish/Ottoman culture, the customs, the food, the dress, etc. The Turkish/Ottoman empire were where the majority of the small number of surviving Circassians, including Aziyade, were diaspora. However, "Loti" also describes a relationship with a male Spanish servant, named Samuel, that is never quite clear if it is plutonic or romantic at its core. The novel's blending of the fictional and non-fictional has led many experts to believe that the story is about Loti's forbidden relationship with a man, and that Aziyade and Samuel might be personifications of the same lover, an attempt by Loti to conceal his homosexual relationship. In fact, most expert summarizations do not even mention Samuel since the subtext seems overt. It is a very compelling story, and Marc-Antoine Corticchiato's composition beautifully represents a lot of these themes. Although, I must admit, when I first smelled Aziyade, I thought of an amazing tagine I ate some years back - not Loti's novel. I can be such a dullard sometimes. The tagine was one of the most fragrant culinary profusions I have ever smelled. The lid was lifted and I was bathed in the aromas of lamb, Medjool dates, cumin, cinnamon, coriander, paprika, and olive oil - and probably many other things I was unable to fully identify. Ugh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The first few minutes of Aziyade is that experience in spades for me. Deep red fruity aromas that are almost wine-like from pomegranates and dates, and citrusy and juicy oranges, are juxtaposed to striking notes of cinnamon and cardamom. The spices are photorealistic to an absurd degree with the cinnamon presenting baking spice and dark aromatic wood notes, and cardamom its cool, green herbal, beige wood warmth and sweetness. It takes seconds for my skin heat to release the cumin note, and once it joins the fruits and spices cue my mouthwatering. It is a true funky, woody, spicy, body-odor cumin note - so beware, if that is not a note that you care for. Its vocal volume is dialed in perfectly with the others. The cumin is the last to leave as the dry down begins, and hangs-on for quite a while as cocoa powder and frankincense notes join the stage. The cumin loses some of its sharpness in this stage, but still presents some of its brighter, aromatic woody facets that work superbly well with the sweet and earthy cocoa and the beautifully rounded frankincense smoke that smells mildly bright and citrusy, smoky, warm and balsamic. It's an inspired combination. Wonderful stuff. Further evolution of the perfume continues with the exotic cocoa theme via a dark and sweet patchouli, vanillic and floral resins, and a big heaping dose of animalic musks. The musks strike me as the same ones that would make an appearance some years later in Musc Tonkin. This dry down is indulgent, luxurious, sexual, yet full of devotion and caring. Call it a Valentine's Day dry down. There's likely going to be an epic meal involved, exchanging of fine chocolates, and, hopefully, some skin-on-skin raunch that... well... Aziyade has quite a bit of all that. Aziyade is a stunner, and it's going to stun you and people around you, maybe for better or for worse. It's loud and tenacious. For the experienced perfume wearer this might signal concerns since loud and tenacious gourmands are typically quite lumpen, suffocating, and rough for the wearer and the observer, but not Aziyade. It is sweet, yes, but never too sweet; it is not shy with the body-odors of cumin and musk, but not to the point where there will be questions if you forgot to shower this morning, nor are they so rough and sharp that they will scratch their way up your palate; the overlap of the revered incense with the woody cumin, decadent cocoa, and vanilla sounds like it shouldn't work, but they are lockstep with each other. All of this means that I find Aziyade to be very easy to wear, like a transparent cloud of the aromas of tagines cooking-away in a Turkish bazaar shifting to a privately decadent, sexual, and weightless second skin. پیر لوتی AZIYADE نام اولین کتاب پیر لوتی؛نویسنده ی فرانسوی هست.کتابی شرح حال گونه از دوران اقامت چند ماهه ی لوتی در ترکیه بعنوان یک افسر نیروی دریایی و داستان عشق او به دختری با نامAziyadé. افرادی که این کتاب رو خوندن؛همگی بر سر یه نکته اجماع دارن و اون هم توصیفات و تصویر سازیهای بسیار زیبای لوتی از فضای استانبول و حال و هوای خاص اون هست.اما شاید این عطر؛اشااره ای کلی به سفرهای شرقی جناب لوتی و یادی از ایشونه که نام اولین کتابش توسط جناب کورتیشیاتو بر این عطر گذاشته شده. لوتی به هند و ایران هم سفر کرده و خاطرات سفر به ایران رو در قالب کتابی با عنوان بسوی اصفهان به یادگار گذاشته. به همین خاطر هست کهAZIYADE رو نمیشه عطری مخصوص به یک قلمرو خاص دونست؛بلکه خاطرات سفر شرقی پیر لوتی رو در هم تنیده و به زیبایی منعکس میکنه. عطر شروعی خوراکی و ترش و شیرین داره که میشه تلخی پوست پرتغال و البته کمی تندی ادویه جات رو در پس فضای خوراکی حس کرد. اما در شروع حس روغنی؛خامه مانند و گرم بادام؛در کنار فضای ملسی که انار و آلو ایجاد کردن و کمی هم گاز داره؛که شاید بخاطر انار هست؛بیشتر از هر چیز دیگه ای خودنمایی میکنه. 10تا15 دقیقه ی بعد؛رایحه ی باکیفیتی از هل حس میشه و به آرومی فضای گورمند ابتدایی رو به سمت فضایی اسپایسی و سنگین حرکت میده و در این بین رایحه ی دلنشین دارچین با اون حس تند و کمی چوبی آشناش خودشو نشون میده و در کنار رایحه ای دودی؛فضای ابتدایی رو کاملا کنار میزنن و از اون فقط یه حس ملس باقی میذارن. به مرور تندی زنجبیل و زیره و البته اون حس خاکی و خشک زیره به جبهه ی اسپایسی اضافه میشن و قدرت رو بدست گرفته و رایحه ای اسپایسی؛دودی و خشک و بسیار زیبا به عطر میدن که یه شیرینی ضعیف هم درش هست.همین شیرینی ضعیف و حس خوراکی ملس و کرمی؛بعد از مدتی حاشیه نشینی به میدان بر میگردن ولی اینبار سنگین تر و جدی تر هستن و به وضوح میشه بوی تنباکوی میوه ای رو حس کرد؛هر چند تنباکو هر از گاهی استقلال خودشو فریاد میزنه و با اون جنبه دودی و نسبتا تلخی که داره؛خودی نشون میده و فضای سنگین و ادویه ای رو تقویت میکنه؛اما بیشتر در بند فضای میوه ای و خوراکی ملس مایل به شیرین هست. این رفت و آمدها و بالا و پایین زیبا و دوست داشتنی فضای کلی عطر خواهد بود که بسیار شامه نوازه. در انتها کار کمی شیرین میشه اما یه شیرینی کنترل شده! AZIYADE', 2008 by parfumdempire AZIYADE', 1879 by Pierre Loti a novel It is 2008 when Monsieur Corticchiato celebrates the fifth anniversary since the foundation of his company realising a perfume: an exotic, erotic, and magical perfume called Aziyadè. It is 1879 when Pierre Loti published anonimously his first novel. The protagonist, called Loti, is a French Naval officer stationed in Greece and Constantinople (now Istanbul) in the fall and winter of 1876. The story is about Loti's illicit love affair with an 18-year-old "Circassian" harem girl named Aziyadé. (I will not spoil the coup de théâtre about Aziyadè real identity). So, both the novel and the perfume tells us a story of seduction. What is interesting about Aziyadé (from now on I mean the perfume) is the anthropological, philological, and historical research Corticchiato performed. He studied all the extracts from plants used in rituals of seduction. What we have is a conconction with many spices: cardamom that was used as aphrodisiac in ancient Egypt; cinnanmon from Ceylon used in love rituals in the Roman Empire; ginger used in Vhina to -let us say - "excite the mucous menbranes"; and cumin used everywhere from Persia to ancient Hellenic cities and Egypt during the "hyeros gamos" rituals, i.e., sacred prostitution. After the spices, other erotic ingredients are the pomegrate in the opening, mythologically believed to be born from Dyonisus's blood (again a ritual bounded to sacred prostitution), and, in the base, the smoke that stems from the patchouli used in India to help attaining sexual pleasure, the blonde vanilla from Madagascar used by the Aztechs, and the larmes of incense employed by the Arabs. The idea is ingenous and consistent with Parfume d'Empire as a perfume house: we have all the herbs and materials used in rituals of seduction within the various empires worldwide and we have a name taht resonates with a book that only apparently epitomizes "orientalism". In reality, Loti is conquered and subverted by Oriental seductive figure of Aziyadé. And while he is conquered, he can truly express his desires and becomes himself. This is definitely one of the most impressive perfumes I have tried. It's a heavy and glorious spicy oriental par excellence. Complex and multifaceted, it's like a hologram, showing all its exquisite and expensive smelling components throughout the time it lasts on the skin, which is 6 to 10 hours. I was looking for a plum perfume, but AZIYADE is so much more than that. Do you see the composition pyramid of it? It's spot on. All these notes are there, and your nose will get them all. The only thing I don't sense here is almonds, but I might be anosmic to it. The overall impression from AZIYADE is that its style calls up the orientals of Serge Lutens. Basically I just find these two houses very similar in their approach to perfumery. Anyway, AZIYADE to me is a better take on this genre. Whereas both ARABIE and FEMENITE DU BOIS (that I feel in AZIYADE from time to time) smell repulsive on my skin (ARABIE like a cheap and untidy restaurant, FdB like cats' litter), AZIYADE just blooms with all its opulence on me. I'm not saying that it's a tribute to SL's bestsellers, not at all. It just has a similar spirit. If you have ever smelled Arabie, Femenite du Bois, and Rousse, you might get a couple of already experienced whiffs from AZIYADE. But, to me, it is far more elaborated and deep, and complete. The animalic note here is quite strong, reminds me a bit of a smoother Musc Koublai Khan, - musky and dirty, but not repelling. MKK is a big sweaty and hairy man, and AZIYADE is just a bad girl who has advisedly chosen not to shower before a date with her lover... There is a famous anecdote about Napoleon and his Josephine. This musky note is about that I think. Well, anyways I don't find it wearable for me personally, as it is a very "dressy", serious and classic perfume. It does not resonate with my inner self, but I still appreciate the high level of this work. It's a masterpiece. Try it. Even if you won't wear it, for your nose that will be a great olfactory lesson.

Constantinople, 1876. An illicit love affair between a French officer and an 18-year old harem girl that was revealed to be a boy. The heat of the city matching the heat of their passions. Forbidden, dangerous, exotic and sexual. This is the story of Pierre Loti's Aziyade - a XIXth-century French novel and of Mr. Corticchiato's Aziyade. This juice is really dangerous and sexual: my favourite by @parfumdempire It opens like a blast, a true explosion:zesty citrus, cumin, musk, and animalic, leathery labdanum over honey, dates, ginger, prunes and seemingly every single spice known to a Moroccan spice vendor. I am in love with how much depth the cumin gives to this composition (Monsieur Corticchiato, have you toned it down in most recent itrations?) because it exhalted the animalic, dark, almost masculine and very dirty labdanum. It soon softes down with honey, dried fruits and prune that counterbalance the acidity of the citruses. A strong vein of animalic musk runs underneath it all. The combination of the leathery labdanum, the musk, and the cumin create a very sexual undertone to the scent. All this conconction could have become extremely heavy, dense , and cloying. But Corticchiato made it somehow airy and sheer so nobody would be terrify by the animalic skank and the cumin. Seduction in a bottle: a cannot part from Aziyade.

Opens up with a additive sweet fruity yet off the bat spicy opening, an extra zingy cherry cola, but with a thicker date/agave syrup feel. Just as you are about to drown in the sticky opening note you are blasted by a punch of heavy spice, cinnamon, perhaps dry curry leaves or ground cumin, which smell undeniably provocative and pungent, not disgusting by any means, like going from freshly showered to breaking a light sweat. The spice has a way of blooming and slowly cutting through the sweet fruit, it starts like a mild tickle and then starts making itself known, like it's slowly being dialed in. Very potent 2 sprays max would be the optimal amount, but it sticks close to the skin (projection is modest, but more than that would be excessive.) As the name implies 'an 18-year-old Circassian harem girl named Aziyadé' this is the pinnacle of fragrance as an aphrodisiac. It oozes an intoxicating distinctly feminine sensuality, not in a cute girly way, rather a confident striking womanly type of allure. Edit: 10/2022 Having sampled a lot of Lutens recents, I realize this is indeed an expansion of the same idea as Feminite du Bois. However Aziyade feels higher quality, more intense, dark and mouthwatering, also less powdery overall.

So intriguing. In the beginning I mostly smell strong fresh ginger root with a heavy hand of cumin. I love the blend of spices. Later on, I smell tobacco and perhaps some dried dates. This perfume makes me think of faraway places...distant lands. Oddly enough, it doesn't make me think of a particular country or region. What comes to mind is an ancient fictional place, like on the show Game of Thrones. When I first applied it, it smelled like cola. This is how fresh ginger root smells on me (when used in perfumery. Of course I don't wear the actual root). I thought about where I had smelled this before, and I remembered Arunima by Strange Invisible perfumes. These two perfumes share similar notes. I like Aziyade better though, more complex and lasting on the skin--probably due to the fact that this perfume contains synthetics, whereas Arunima is 100% natural. Hours into wearing it, I smell a lot of vanilla and hot cinnamon. The beautiful thing about this perfume is that the drydown does not become boring, like completely vanilla and cinnamon. It retains its beautiful complexity the entire time. This house has really impressed me with what I have sampled thus far.

What a beauty this one can be if it matches your skin chemistry! I tried it plenty of times and I got mixed results from it. This is an oriental dream. Dried fruits - and a lot of them, heavy spices, vanilla and woods and musks in the drydown. The one thing that differs heavily depending on when I try it is an amount of caraway/cumin I get. Sometimes I can feel it in a regular amount and then it's in harmony with cinnamon and cardamom, making a great 'coating' for the dry sweet plums and dates of the opening. Sometimes, though, it gets overwhelming and its sweaty quality makes its presence known by smothering everything below. What you get depends on the season and weather, but mostly on your skin chemistry. Like every PdE, Aziyade has great longevity, sillage, projection. It is unique, opulent and heavy. However, this is the one creation of Corticchiato I find so polarizing - none of his scents are safe by definition, but this one is the most unpredictable and as heavy on spices as anything I've tried. Like some fellow reviewers said, this is a definition of niche perfumery and, for me, a work of art, even if it gets out of control sometimes. 9/10

Parfum d'Empire is very less spoken brand, Truly underrated and under the radar. This brand uses most natural elements in their blend making. I own 6 till now, want to add few more. Below are my favorite list in order. 1. Cuir Ottoman - Slightly powdery Iris, resinous cozy suede amber with new leather 2. Azemour Les Orangers - lighter version of Les Indemodables Chypre Azural. But I enjoy both. 3. Aziyade - unique date syrupy vibe 4. Ambre Russe - Spicy, warm, slightly boozy, at times slightly gourmand and very elegant [ At time this becomes Top 1 and sometimes down to 4 - Its been like aa shuffle game] 5. Immortelle Corse - Initially, I felt what is this non-liner profile. But after let it settle down for 4-5 months. Now it is unfolds its honeyed, spicy, and slightly saline nuances, evoking sun-heated herbs, dry earth with slight sea breezes. 6. Fougere Bengale - Yet I need to understand it. For now, it is darker spices + syrupy sweet. Prominent Papery Tea and mint, Ginger and Patchouli play a hide and seek. Better to sample before buying full bottle. Awaiting to hands-on un bel amour d'été.

Oh my goodness—happiness!!! I have pretty much all the Serge Lutens, and Arabie gets hit about once a year or two, because it is so....strong, spicy just wow! It can also go a bit sickly sweet on me. This is like...Arabie but better (oh I can’t believe I said that). It’s strong on the plum and citrus, lifts up in a light lovely way with cardamom (which I ADORE!) along with light, tart ginger and pomegranate, is infused with sweet dates (doesn’t smell like cola to me—yay), and the whole is a swirl of incense (labdanum). This is the Marrakech to me! My sizeable decant will go FB shortly. LOVE this. Definitely try before you buy; it’s closest cousin, just similar DNA to me is SL Arabie, and if that one is a miss for you, this may be too, though I think this one is smoother and more balanced (I still love you Serge!). Silage and Longevity are excellent! I’m in a cloud of delight for hours. I hope everyone around me is too. This may not be office appropriate but is sexy and sophisticated! I’m off to revel in my décolletage and nibble on my wrists...

I am instantly intrigued by the description and must sample... I wonder will it transport me to mysterious, sensual wonders of the mind's eye? Let's see. . . At first application I am smitten. I savor this fragrance for at least 10 minutes before I remember I'm supposed to be writing a review. Ok, I am intrigued but have to reapply as I have missed the opening. (Forgive me) At second application I stay focused enough to tell you I am mesmerized by the spices. I never saw the pomegranate . If it was there it was just a whisper. I can imagine a simmering pot of sugar and water, vanilla, cinnamon, shredded fresh ginger, candied orange rinds, (not marmalade-y), dates and prunes. I guess that's the dry plum mentioned. Add vanilla and cinnamon to taste. As these are melding together the bad boys patch, musk, incense and frankincense make their appearance, softly blending with the simmering pot ingredients. So artfully blended the lines between, top note to dry down are lovingly blurred. Applause! Applause! Mr. Corticchiato, take a bow!

Aziyade is one of my favourite spicy perfumes. I like my orientals sweet, rich and spicy and Aziyade definitely delivers. I find this fragrance to be exotic and slightly elusive but if I was to describe I would say it smells like plum jam spiced up with some delicious Middle-Eastern goodies such as cumin, cinnamon and with candied orange peel thrown on top. Gourmandish and very complex. I don`t think it`s a crowdpleaser though - cumin and heavy spices can be very polarizing so I mostly wear my Aziyade when I`m at home or applied with a light hand just to make sure no one around me will choke on it. Sillage is geat and so is longevity. I think it`s a must try for oriental lovers. Price is not cheap but compared to some niche lines it`s quite down-to-earth. Also I don`t detect any similarities between Aziyade and Serge Lutens` Arabie. They are both spicy but while I dislike Arabie because to me it smells like Indian curry, Aziyade is a fascinating oriental beauty and a delight to my senses.

There are two kinds of people in the world - people who smell like cheese and onion crisps when they sweat, and people who smell like cumin. This stuff is the liquid Platonic form of the latter, and cannot save the former. An actual panty-dropper in the sense that this is what dropped pants ideally smell like. The seat of the exercise bike in the gym on Mount Olympus. It can be used to fend off showering for days in the height of summer in Provence, months in winter in London. Smells like cumin, and therefore sweaty bodies, with fruit - mainly lovely dates - other spices schlurped together into Coca-Cola. Goes on for ages. You can definitely wear it to work, no-one likes a coward. I’ve had 100ml for over a decade and I’m only halfway down so you get a lot for your outlay - memory’s imperfect and I clearly have a bit of an issue with the stuff but this at least speaks to how far it goes. Men, women, anyone. Buy it, keep it in production, save me from a life of really weird crime.

You're not at work are you? Good. Wow! During the opening I had some more forceful expletives, as in telling someone to perform a certain action on me, but wow! What a cunning scent. It really draws you in. Deeper. Deeper still. As the perfume breathes from paper, it feels 'more female' but it is certainly inviting you to let go of your doctrine and preconceptions and just do whatever feels natural. It expresses the need to touch your skin and you'll probably consent. On skin, cumin comes out to play in an ensemble suggesting things like earthy, flowery, fruity, something more ethereal as well, eucalyptus? I'm having trouble finding all the notes. I could use more experience. And so it goes up and down between the notes while the cumin holds it gently in its grasp. I could go on... This perfume is a work of art. A very pleasurable experience. I suggest to wear some on clothes as well, so it can catch a breath while it goes to town.

When I first sprayed this for at least 20 minutes or so, I thought, why does it smell like a nutty lemonade? I think it might eb the crystallised dates which, especially when first sprayed, give it that 'fizzy' scent. Anyway after an hour or so out come the cinnamon and other spies and this combined with the subtle sweetness of the opening notes, smells lovely. It has impressive sillage. I don't have a problem with the cumin. As for the vanilla/patchouli musk drydown, well it's there but only very faintly in the background. But still it lends a nice deep sensuality to the blend. It doesn't smell totally unique to me, it reminds me a bit of Sushi Imperiale (which I also have) and Frapin 1270. (I've never smelt Dinner by Bobo). All in all a nice sensual oriental fragrance. Luckyscent's description is, once again, spot on.

Fragrantica Members please help! I am trying to decide on which Parfums d'Empire fragrance to purchase next. I own three already; two I love (Amber Russe and Wazamba) and one I have a hard time wearing (Yuzu Fou). I am debating between Aziyade, Fougere Bengal, and Musc Tonkin. My favorite scent of all time is Chaos by Donna Karan, so naturally I am drawn to Aziyade, but I am not sure about the cumin note. I hate cumin if it smells like body odor like in Eau d'Hermes. I also like lavender, barbershop scents so I think I might like Fougere Bengal, but I don't like Immortelle if it is done too strong and sweet smelling. Some members compare it to Etat Libre D'Orange The Afternoon of a Faun, which smells horrible to me. Maybe I should just go with Musk Tonkin. It sounds intriguing. Which is your favorite and why?

In Aziyade is as abundance of oriental fruits and spices, that it reels in head. I feel, as if fly on me nectar orange, peaches, pomergranate, I feel, as if I have charged my body coriander, pepper, caravay. Scent is baroque, is like smell Dionizos drink . It very abundant , hedonist, heavy, joyful, full oriental luxury perfume. Vey thick , notes are crowded. Is clear smell of sweat ( cummin?), but is not unpleasant smell. It can be erotic perfume, as framer author of smell Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, though for me more erotic is a bit hard, no too pleasant, for example - mysterious Mitsouko. But what - problem taste, but Aziyade is fine, because is juicy, very color and unusually cheerful. I do not know , if I will buy Aziyade, because it's loud and provoking. But is very fascinatis...

31)close from Lutens style, it's a concentrated of dried fruit coated with oriental spices treated with more brutal and incisive touchs. The opening is heavily lemony and orangy, a bitter and medicinal brandy from which merges immediately some warm spices, cinnamon, cumin, ginger and cardamom, creating a striking instantaneous simulation of Coca-Cola . Plum, almond and candied date then took over, with a sweet and syrupy sweetness, which continues with notes of vanilla, patchouli, incense and labdanum, creating smoke and caramelized atmosphere as a black licorice melt. Perfectly unisex, highly sensual and terribly addictive. Another great success of this wonderful nose that is Marc-Antoine Corticchiato which I can not even blame one poor creation.

The first time I smelled Aziyade, it took my breath away. I literally had a "moment", some "brain ecstasy". It felt like the most beautiful thing I've ever smelled and it satisfied all of my senses. This seldomly happens to me. I was so exited and ready to dump all of my fragrances just for this one:) Anyway, after a little while the fragrance took a big turnaround on me and all I was left with: a very smelly armpit on my whist. I wasn't ready for such a let down. I am not afraid of cumin and skanky fragrances, but this was way too much! So, I am sad, but still not giving up, maybe one day my chemistry will change and work a little better with an amazing Aziyade.
