1902 Vetiver

I got this in the post recently, I pretty much tacked it on to an order to achieve free shipping status and that I'm always in search of a true, honest Vetiver. That's not what this is to me but it's pretty nice, nonetheless. It's a huge splasher bottle for $10 from discounters. Great as a beater fragrance or for shower/bath. I've been using it on my feet, socks and shoes a lot and it's pretty great for that. I also work it into my beard when I'm out of the bath. Could see this as an excellent layering fragrance though it's not something I often do. Now about that Vetiver. Frankly, it's barely there for me if even at all. This bottle was a disappointment for me in that regard but moving forward-- What I do get is a very noticeable absinthe/wormwood impression, so for someone who likes the "grassy" side of Vetiver this may be right for them. At times it reminds of a strong Gin&Tonic. Good quality green citrus on the open that bring to mind some classic men's colognes. The rest is very much the leafy, grassier side of things. A meadow instead of a forest. Not very earthy on my nose at all, really. Not a lot of woodsiness. Much more of a low borders/edge lines of a garden landscape, with some florals nearby and a powdery/old fashioned compact sensation as time goes on. I'm not averse to any of these things, but I do like my Vetiver a bit more rugged. Overall, still, pretty nice quality. The value is excellent.

If you like this, check out Guerlain's Vetiver. 1902 Vétiver definitely has the vetiver that I'd been looking for in an EDT since discovering this Berdoues' scent several years ago. 1902 Vétiver by Berdoues is a wonderful scent, but it's a very weak EDC. I'd been thinking about adding a summer scent at the time since I didn't have many and this 1902 Vétiver had always been in the back of my mind, but wanted a longer lasting EDT. Both 1902 and Guerlain are fresh, earthy, green, and clean (1902 is a little sweeter) and both are made for spring/summer months, IMO. Guerlain Vetiver's EDT does perform way better; not stellar, but better.

A simple bergamot and verbena fragrance, with noticeable support of smoky vetiver,aromatics and musk, giving a vague impression of moss in the drydown. Not unique but very well blended. It is an EdC and, as expcted, performs like an EdC. That said, as opposed to many EdC around, it is priced like an EdC and is probably one of the best citrus-y EdC around. Will do a great job as an aftershower/aftershave or simple Summer fragrance. The price point makes it a real winner imo! Spring/Summer days, 20+

my mom bought me this when i was younger - right around the time where i began getting obsessed with historical fashion. just because it had "1902" written on it, it made me feel very antique! ( ᴖ⩊ᴖ )

A true cologne, don't expect this to be a big performer. But at $14 for 125ml, this fills a need. Opens with lemon verbena and lime over a hefty artemisia. We have an artemisia plant in our back yard that we harvest and dry, and that sort of dusty, bitter, green element is here in photorealistic splendor. The bright citruses keep the artemesia from being overbearing, while the artemesia gives the scent some depth. There is a floral along the lines of LOTV, some eugenol, and lavender that adds a bit of barbershop. The biggest problem is that there is NO DISCERNIBLE VETIVER in a fragrance called "Vetiver". I blind-bought this in search of a vetiver-forward fragrance, so I'm kind of annoyed. If they had called this "Citrus Artemesia", I would give it a thumbs up. But as I bought this for the sole reason that I love vetiver, this is a big disappointment.

Smells almost identical to the ones that my barbers aftershave balms every time I got a shave. Not to say it's bad but it's just that it is so reminiscent of that exact moment

I think some of the confusion around the floral notes of this fragrance actually stem from the fact that Berdoues produce 2 different versions of 1902 Vetiver. The "1902 Eau de Cologne Tradition: Vetiver" and the "1902 Eau de Cologne Premium Collection: Vetiver Herbacea". On the Berdoues website the "Tradition" cologne is described as "...a more masculine composition with its woody notes of vetiver, oak moss and musk." I purchased the "Premium Collection" version of the fragrance and it has a large initial blast of aldehydic floral and powdery musk notes, with only a lightly herbal and citrus quality. Once the head notes settle down and the heart notes are more pronounced it does become a light herbal and woodsy fragrance, with clean laundry musk notes. It's elegant and pleasant, but a far cry from the green jute, hessian rasp of natural vetiver. A lovely, very light summer cologne. As much as I like this fragrance, I do think it's pretty cheeky to bang on about the virtues of vetiver essential oil all over the box, when a perusal of the ingredients shows a distinct lack of vetiver. By all means call the fragrance "Vetiver" if it is what you plan to evoke, but if there is no natural vetiver oil in it then it is just plain misleading to pretend there are benefits from the essential oil. Naughty, naughty.

reminds me of soap, grass, fresh clean laundry, and clean skin. I’m trigger happy when using this fragrance. It reminds me of a watered down/ cologne version of diptyque’s eau de sens. Not long lasting as expected since it’s a cologne, but it’s definitely provides a delightful experience while it lasts.

I'm surprised with not show many flowers in the notes. To me, it's reveals a more sweet (in a flowery way) and more sunny side of the vetiver.
