Haltane

Greed as inspiration. The Sprecher Group, owner of Initio Parfums Privés, decided to double the sales of its most successful fragrance, Oud For Greatness, by simply cloning it... for good measure they did a couple of inconsequential tweaks, changed the name, changed the bottle, and started selling it on their other brand, Parfums de Marly... I know that the same can be said for most flankers... but at least flankers are honest about what they’re trying to do, which is sell “almost” the same product again and again, whilst here, they’re trying to hide the fact by changing everything but the scent. And yes, Haltane is a great perfume, of course it is... but that’s not the real question... the real question is, are both Oud For Greatness and Haltane different enough to merit having the two? And the answer is... sadly NO!! And I say “sadly”, because the differences between the two could’ve been more noticeable (and more lasting), that simple situation would have rendered both iterations needed on their own rights, regrettably, the Sprecher Group took the easiest and safest route by just copying the recipe, adding a few inconsequential tweaks, and selling it under a new name and company, as if they never knew of the half brother’s existence. By the way, the inconsequential tweaks in Haltane (in comparison with OFG) are... slightly diminished sweetness, ever so slightly stronger leather, and a herbal undertone. The opening is where such variations will be more noticeable, mainly the fresh herbal aura, which is truly very likable, unfortunately, it will be completely lost in just a couple of hours, hence the inconsequential part. After those few hours, absolutely no one will be able to tell the difference between Oud for Greatness and Haltane, making the latter an unnecessary addition to any perfume wardrobe. Now, speaking solely about Haltane... it is foremost a soft Agarwood fragrance, with a slightly sweet Praline accord, lovely aromatics from the Lavender and Clary Sage, a clean leathery bottom and a creamy aura. I also smell some delicious sweet musk in the juice, however, the note breakdown doesn’t mention having any... even so, I do believe the stuff is there. It is a completely unisex parfum, any women who chooses to wear this perfume will smell amazing. Preferably a cold or mild weather fragrance, and better suited for a special occasion. Finally, we get to performance... which incidentally is also the biggest difference with its cloned half brother... projection in Haltane is on the lower side of moderate for two hours and then it becomes intimate, with longevity of about 6 hours... putting things into perspective, this is just about half of OFG’s performance. In conclusion, if the differences are truly inconsequential and the performance is not that great, then why would we want to buy Haltane??? Maybe someone from the Sprecher Group’s financial team might be better prepared to explain the reasons...

He's also one of the funniest guys I know, and we share a love of good food. You know what his favorite food is? Chimichangas. Can you believe it? That's why we get along so well. He's a real character, that Ry. But you know, Ryan and I have a little inside joke. Whenever I wear Haltane, he texts me "Hey Denz, is it hot in here or is it just your scent?" It's a little corny, but it always makes me chuckle. I have to admit, Ry's texts can get a little bit excessive at times. Sometimes he'll text me in the middle of the night just to ask if I'm wearing Haltane. And if I don't respond quickly enough, he'll send me a barrage of messages until I answer him. But I don't blame him, I mean, who wouldn't want to smell as good as I do? Parfums de Marly Haltane Eau de Parfum is the perfect blend of boldness and sophistication, perfect for those who want to stand out in a crowd. So why not give it a try and see where it takes you? Let it envelop you in a world of seduction and confidence. And who knows, maybe you'll get a nickname and some persistent text messages from Ry Reynolds too.

It is absurd to me that this is the same house which also produced Percival. I am a fragrance novice and recently acquired a PdM sampler set - I wanted to branch out from scents which had been gifted to me in the past such as Acqua di Gio EDT and L'eau Dissey pour homme. Both nice, clean fragrances, but I was curious to experience more. I have been wearing Haltane for about a week now and I adore it. It is sweet, woody, and regal. My intent was to find a scent neither smelled like a teenager (Percival) nor a grandpa, but something in between. Haltane accomplishes that for me. The oud note is splendid. It is unequivocally there, but it is not suffocating either. I have a decant of Gissah's Imperial Valley and my girlfriend described it as noxious, eye-burning, and nauseating. She loves Haltane on me. Obviously, Gissah and PdM are two wildly different houses, but I want to point out that this is an oud scent that you can wear not at the expense of others. There is a sweetness too, which I am finding to be a common theme throughout PdM's fragrances, but it is not cloying. I really enjoy Haltane. If you are looking for an oud fragrance that will not suffocate everyone around you, I recommend you sample Haltane.

Bergamot shines in the opening together with lavender and a woody base, not old mature wood but fresh foresty wood. I can see why people compare it to Oud for Greatness, though I do believe Oud for Greatness amps up the oud factor, creating a darker scent. On the contrary Haltane is clearer and cleaner. The dry down reveals the delicate spiciness of the cedar and saffron. What was foresty in the opening is now a familiar, comforting, antique. The dry down is incredibly mature. This perfume is subtle and projects far but not strongly. I reckon this would absolutely enhance a dressed up middle to senior aged gentleman and leave a positive impression. I see this as being more appropriate for special occasions, casual nights out, cocktail bars, museum parties, art galleries. It smells expensive and sophisticated and doesn't try to overwhelm or intimidate you with the oud. It's purely there to enhance the already prevalent citrus, and lavender notes at the forefront. I don't particularly get any praline on my skin, there's no distinct chocolatiness or outspoken sweetness aside from the subtle sweetness of the wood and lavender that I can pick up, but I don't miss it in any case.

Preface: I am not well versed in perfumery and the olfactory experiences like a lot of the others here, this is purely an opinion from an average man who is slightly more informed than average about fragrances and perfumes. Hopefully my reviews might relate more to the average audience. Haltane is sweet, warm, and luxurious, in the best sense. I think it is underrated compared to the Layton, Carlisle, Althaïr, and the freshie lines of PDM. I heard oud notes are controversial but I think even if you don't like the overwhelming smell of oud, this is worth a tester or a sample. For me, it is so good, it is the first fragrance that I impulse buy just from trying the sample. Longevity is above average with a moderate to strong sillage, even with a single spray to the inside of my elbow. Haltane is one of those fragrances that just live in my head rent free, and can't help smelling once in a while. Each hit of those dry downs on my nose is a pleasant surprise on how long it lasts. People say that is modeled after similar scents, but in its defense, none of them is exactly the same on the blend and experience, and I think it's what gives Haltane its uniqueness.
