Kalan

Alright, so I have reviewed this after sampling it in a store, but as that last review said, I had to have a bottle here at some point, and now I've got a full bottle to review fully! Kalan, a very divisive and polarizing choice from PDM, I have a bottle of Layton, and have smelled Pegasus and Haltane as well. Of the 4, for whatever reason Kalan sits in the same boathouse as Layton in terms of how much I like it. I have a bit of a tough time understanding all the hate this gets, but at the same time, I can understand it. I remember being in a shop and being handed a tester strip with this on it, and I couldn't stop sniffing it for a week. Lol. The opening, which for most is the worst part of this whole thing, is gorgeous! A touch of the vibe of BR540 for a few minutes, though NO this does NOT smell like BR540, it's opening retains a little bit of that burnt sugar thing, but within 5 minutes it opens itself up to a mossy woody experience. Right off the top, you do notice a slightly juicy citrus, I can't discern though if this is an orange, but it definitely is citrus, but if you sprinkled a little bit of half your spice cabinet on it, and a dash of pepper. One of the few top note lists that as you read it, it really hits the nail for me as I smell this. Each note is a bit distinct. As it moves towards the drydown, I don't seem to get much of a middle and base separately, more of a middle and base all at once. The notes at this point are harder to pinpoint individually, and it seems blended exceptionally well at that point, strong woody spiciness, little remnants of the citrussy pepper from the top, you can definitely tell they have a bit of tonka and definitely the sandalwood, which is a more unique version than what I normally smell. It also has a very strange and unique freshness to it that I very much enjoy. Lots of folks talking here on an earthy quality in this, I definitely detect it, but I don't get this disgusting nasty thing that everyone is talking about at all. Sure, it is earthy, it definitely has a bit of "dirt" to it, but in such a gorgeous smelling way! To my nose this stuff is pure beauty! For some reason I have 2 thoughts as I wear this stuff, at times I feel it leans almost gourmand. But what food it's trying to be? I'm very unsure. Lol. My nose can't help but think delicious like the honey note in Le Male elixir mixed with the vanilla. Just sexy and delicious. This has that vibe, but mixed with like a mechanic shop in a really great smelling way. Lmfao. I love it. Performance is incredibly deceiving and is really different from most of the frags in my collection currently. When you first spray this stuff on, it's incredibly tame. The "crappy" opening if you will thankfully is very tame, but the moment this stuff starts drying onto your skin and clothes, it opens right up, sillage getting stronger over the first hour, until about 2 hours in, it seems to hit its peak. Strong sillage that will linger where you were more than it remains a bubble around you. You can walk away from a spot you'd been standing, only to walk back a minute later and smell yourself standing there. I applied for my first ever wearing of this at 3pm today, it is now midnight after a slightly sweaty night at work, and not only is this stuff still very much projecting itself from me, but its still rather strong at that. Review under me stating "20 sprays minimum, this is a very weak fragrance" I literally applied 8 sprays, and that felt liberal as hell with this one. I venture to guess dude got something fake, or ripped off, either way I don't see that he owns it, so I'm guessing he's just hating to hate. The performance here is good, it did the same thing to me that Layton did. It made me wonder how ungodly strong this stuff was before it got reformulated to 84% as my box and bottle say. Layton is the same way, like at 78%, I can imagine that being absolutely overpowering and annoying, same thing here, I hear that this used to be 80% or whatever, and it's no wonder why so many people hated it... I feel like these reformulations, atleast from my point of view, having never smelled the original formulation, were probably something some of these frags needed, as I absolutely LOVE both of my PDM bottles, and wouldn't ask for them to be any stronger. So Idk. Comparing this to smells that I have currently and stuff I've sniffed along my journey, I get similarities to Haltane but even more so it's clone, Detour Eco, I pick up some similarity in the two, Kalan having a much more earthy approach between them, this also takes me a little bit to the old bottles of Stetson, the original Polo, and the fragrance my grandfather used to wear when I was young, no idea what it was, but there is a slight muskiness that lies within the freshness of this stuff that hides hints of that scent as well. The earthy spiciness of this makes me feel like I should be sat next to a campfire or a fireplace. Overall, these similarities I notice, are only very slight, and this stuff really kind of sits by itself in it's own little place. All in all, this is definitely polarizing, definitely a unique wear, but something that will hold up well in my collection as I love weird stuff like this. It gives me that same mysterious feeling that I get wearing Sauvage, Black Orchid, Layton, Spectre Wraith, frags like that. Just that weird mysterious, yet smells really nice and good vibe. Not a blind buy for sure. I will blind buy a ton of different stuff, but this is one that I even went and sampled before picking up. At $250 for a bigger bottle, I felt it was only right. I'd give this 10/10 every day, and I will admit, this is actually hands down one of my top 5 favorite frags of the 51 in my current collection. Almost signature worthy for me for fall/winter/cold spring days, as it's weirdness, fits my weirdness to a tee. I'm definitely in a huge minority saying that, as this seems to be one of the most unpopular and hated from this brand that I've seen so far.

What an interesting fragrance. And what an interesting relationship I’ve developed to it. Probably my most excited scent to try from the PdM house. And this has not disappointed in terms of giving my senses a challenge and my emotions an rollercoaster. Upon initial spray I loved it and the originality of it. It was intriguing and unique. The vision of a dark, very lush, moist, cooling mysterious forest, with red filling the sky at sun down comes to mind. However, as it began to open up and dry down there’s just something that wasn’t quite right. Like a red pepper that has gone bad. There is something wet soil-like or vegetal note that didn’t work for me. My girlfriend sensed it as well, but I may have instilled my bias in to her. This pungent aroma acted as a punch in the stomach to nauseate rather than allure. It was saddening since the opening was so different. The bottle and presentation is absolutely beautiful. And one of the top 3, if not the top 3 colour/designs in the house. Now.. this is where things have gotten interesting for me. Ever since the first day I’ve been a bit miffed about this fragrance, because I couldn’t understand it. It was off-putting but still I sniffed my wrist. It was wet but still intrigued me. The bottle called to me like a voice from the distant wet woods I described. So I’ve been trying it for the last two days and honestly... this stuff is brilliant. It’s just so alluring in a hypnotic way that I haven’t experienced before. It’s mysterious, it’s juicy, dry, dark, warming and cooling all at once. There’s a primal earthiness to it which exudes boldness. This would be worn with a dark red blazer and black collared shirt. Or a leather jacket, dark tones underneath, some boots, rugged. Not for some slapped together outfit of light colours or a fumbling look. Honestly.. it’s how a Vampire would probably smell. Or Hannibal Lector. Or someone who possesses some essence of potential danger but a certain cunningness. Even if it’s just some strong ability rather than one that they want to eat your body parts or drink your blood lol. — *edit* Just found this online: “According to Hindu Mythology, Kalan is considered the god of death. He is the one who is in charge of our death.” — It truly smells like earth and sharpness and everything that nature is. Beautiful yet dangerous. Perplexing. It’s eerily intriguing. You can’t stop smelling it but you’re just ever so slightly turned off. Almost like that person you see in your weekly life who you think is unattractive or just odd, but you just want to rip their clothes off and sex them up in the most animalistic way. This scent is a complete mind-fuck. And I think I’m in love. I think everyone should have 1-2 fragrances in their collection that they just can’t figure out. Or that is raw. That is different. Experimental. This is mine now

Of all the PDM's and their niche quailty Kalan was one of those that seemed truly niche in profile. At the time Galloway came closest in this regard. Its peppery clean calm strong, but Kalan goes full bold, artsy, strange. Yet it still smells like a PDM somehow and has a kind of sensibility about it. It was the most surprising and challenging of the bunch for sure. I dont use challenge here as in I disliked it at all, but that it requested thought from me. There was something exciting about that. I very much liked it. And the more it dried down the better it smelled. Of the test strips I took home from my PDM tests, this was among the longer lasting ones. For 2 weeks+ Kalan greeted me as I entered my room. And I enjoyed every second. That was almost two years ago and I've never forgotten this unique scent. TO ME... its one of their best. Definitely want this in the wardrobe. Update: 1-10-2026 This came in yesterday and I've been enjoying it since. Circling back after 2yrs, Im just learning that many compare it to BR540. I've definitely traced similarities between fragrances that are overall different. So I won't say that the comparison is off. But this to my nose is missing so much of what makes Baccarat what it is, any similarities with it seems very faint and can easily go undetected. Now something like Mystery For Him, Confirmed by Jean Christophe Hérault himself, is a mix of BR540 and Aventus. I mean even without this, the 540 aspects are blatant. JC incorporated it's signature without leaning into the burnt sugar and the results are stunning imo. Had I not read and heard Kalan's comparison to BR, I don't know if I would've drawn a connection. I still don't. With effort I think I can get hints in the dry down. Kalan goes from spicy citrus, to floral (not burnt sugar) sweet, to it's mossy woody, warm amber base. Yet alongside these transitions it is somewhat linear and still smells like itself in the drydown. Who knows, maybe the similarities will become more prominent as my bottle age. But then again it smells exactly how I remember 2yrs ago from a used tester at Nordstrom. And it didn't bring 540 to mind at all. Im not complaining though, I'm pretty happy about that.

Probably my personal favourite from PDM, but as you can see from both the score itself, and and the reviews below me, it is a VERY polarising fragrance, especially from PDM who these days seem to be going all in on mass appealing fragrances. Opens up with a subtle but smooth blood orange and lavendar in the opening, that are the behind a strong Plethora of spices, of which this fragrance is most associated/well known for, I personally get a lot of pepper and a decent bit of saffron on my skin, but there are other spices in this that I can't particularly identify. There's a little bit of orange blossom that I didn't detect personally until looking at the official notes and really try to find it whilst smelling my wrist, it's definitely more of a backbone like the citrus and Lavender, to add a nice underlying smoothness the species. And of course lastly we have the woods and Moss, which are the 2nd half of this fragrance, the Moss and Woody notes go together with the Spices to make Kalan's unique scent profile, and due to the combination its unapologetically masculine, there is also a slight airyness I get on my skin which ins interesting as Alehydes isnt an official note, however this could be the orange blossom's doing. Projection on my skin is medium-slightly strong, good for the moderate and colder months/days, but I can see myself wearing It on a cooler summer day and night, lasted around 9-10 hours on my skin. Overall definitely a pleasant fragrance to me personally, but yeah it's very very polarising, definitely not for everybody but worth a try in my opinion as the dry down is far better than the opening, and sadly a lot of people judge a fragrance purely off the opening/early dry down; when they test instore or obtain a sample. Despite the polarising nature of this fragrance I am impressed that pdm took a risk with this one, hopefully in the future they make more polarising fragrances like this one, as they're not beating the designer allegations atm 😂😂, anyways this for is a solid 8.4/10, if you like it, please get it from a discounter and NOT at full retail.

Let me start this off by saying, I got this 5 years ago as a gift. Due to mixed feelings related to who gave it to me, I didn't wear this much. However, in the last few months, that has changed. This is a unique scent to me. The most recent reviewer here said it has similarities to Versace eros flame, which I wore 3x 3.4 oz bottles of. I can say it has slight similarities but not significant ones. There's always going to be overlap somewhere. Since this is a niche fragrance, the quality is astounding, even by PDM standards. It's spicy, slightly woody, and slightly sweet. But not like anything you've smelled from designers. Everything here blends in a unique way. It will catch you off guard for sure. It's strong. Not for the weak. If you usually wear 5 sprays then this one is probably 2 or 3. If you usually wear 3, then this one will be 1. Longevity is over 12 hours, for sure. Only a shower will successfully knock this one off of you unless you want to wait a century. I have a short story. Skip to New Year's Eve (yesterday). I am working in the pharmacy inside of a grocery store. I leave for lunch and smell something ridiculously familiar. I keep sniffing the trail left in the aisle. And BOOM! I realize it's Kalan. I am overcome with shock and intrigue. Who is this person wearing Kalan inside of this grocery store? Who could you be?! I can't find the person because I spent too much time standing and trying to figure out what it was. If I had found the person, I think I would have gushed and pounced them! And if I ever smell this person again, imma find'em! Either way, Kalan has fully come around for me. It's an incredible fragrance and probably fits me more than most. The cost isn't my favorite. That's for sure, but man it smells so good and so different. This one has that special something that you just can't get enough of. I'd put it above every PDM I've smelled. I honestly think it's worth the price. And I say this with confidence because I've worn a few bottles of Percival, Herod, and Layton.

From the very first spray, the fragrance hits hard with a powerful, sharp blend of black pepper and strong spices mixed with the sour, bitter blood orange. It’s bold, loud, and doesn’t try to please everyone. After about 10–20 minutes, it calms down a little. You start to notice a green-lavender vibe with a soft touch of orange blossom, but the spicy and bitter character never fully disappears—it stays strong in the background. After around two hours, it settles into a very unique base: roasted tonka bean (like slightly burnt caramel), heavy woods, an earthy-mossy feel, and a subtle smoky touch. The final result is mysterious, warm, very masculine, and has a kind of “dirty” elegance. Performance is excellent: it lasts 10–12 hours on skin (and days on clothes), with very strong projection (sillage) during the first 3–4 hours, then becoming moderate to strong depending on the weather. Honestly, I’ve never smelled anything exactly like this in my life. It’s truly unique, completely different from mainstream fragrances—even from most niche ones. The best way I can describe it: it smells like a freshly used cigarette ashtray with fresh blood orange squeezed over it... a mix of burnt smoke, sharp citrus, and that sweet-burnt depth in the base. You either fall in love with it or can’t stand it. This is a strong fragrance that demands a strong personality—someone confident who isn’t afraid of bold, unconventional scents and doesn’t follow the crowd. For me, it’s one of my absolute favorite winter and autumn fragrances, no question. It’s perfect for cold weather and evening wear, giving a distinctive, non-mainstream presence. Kalan isn’t for everyone... but for those who truly get it, it becomes one of those scents you never get tired of.

This is definitely one of my all-time favorite fragrances! I’ve always loved spicy, aromatic scents with a hint of sweetness, and this one nails it. It’s probably my top pick from Parfums de Marly. I have most of the popular ones like Herod, Layton, Carlisle, Pegasus, and Percival, but I haven’t tried any of their newer releases since 2020. The scent has some similarities to Baccarat Rouge 540 in terms of its DNA, but where BR540 goes for a bright, sweet vibe, Kalan takes a darker, spicier turn and leans more into the spicy-aromatic and woody side. I get that the opening might be a bit off-putting for some (but I actually love it!), but it transforms into something incredible after about 30 minutes. I once read that BR540 is like what Anakin would wear during his golden happy eras, while Kalan is what Darth Vader would wear. Definetly DO NOT blind buy this, you either love it or hate it there's no in-between. Definetly Masculine leaned, but I can see a female rocking this. Longevity and performance are solid. It’s not nuclear strong, but it easily lasts through my entire 12-hour shifts. It projects well for about 3-4 hours before becoming more of a skin scent. Plus, the sillage is huge and beautiful throughout the day. And nobody wears this! Very unique scent that you will for sure not find another wearing. If anyone has suggestions for other spicy, aromatic, and sometimes sweet fragrances, I’d love to hear them! My favorites include this fragance, Casamorati Dolce Amalfi, Xerjoff Naxos and Torino 21, Nishane Hacivat, Spicebomb Extreme, Acqua di Gio Profumo, and BR540.

My last review of Kalan was 7 months ago. I enjoy it so much, its already caught up to being one of my top 5 most worn of all time. Earning itself a spot amongst the few that I have multiple bottles of. I'm already half way through a 4.2oz. It's fresh, earthy, spicy, sweet, floral, woody, mossy and metallic. Though combining so many contrasting facets, is different without giving the "doing too much" sense that some fragrances do. Imo it plays perfectly between interesting, simple, unconventional and wearable. I'm not a fan of BR540 at all, but over these months I came to see more clearly why some compare the two. Smell wise I think it's mainly the sweet clean metallic aspects and oakmoss, the one note they share, imparting contrasting effects and texture in the base. But they depart from one another in very significant and character defining ways. This is far more earthy and spicy. Which remains even once it reaches it most similarity to BR. To my nose, 540 greatly minors on the spice while using all other notes to put the burnt sugar on display as its winning attribute. That's not Kalan. Those who have said ladies love this on a man, you were absolutely right. In the wild, when it's flowing through the air, it grabs attention in the best way. Kalan is more about a feeling. An aura than a mere smell. To me its clean, dirty, modern, sexy (so I'm told) and classy. I'm glad it exists in all of its polarizing character. I love it.

The opening, for the first time sprayed, was extremely polarizing and pungent. The stinkbug-like character was present for like 5 minutes. I got mostly spices for the opening on the first spray, with a very strong, sharp character to it. That being said, give it 20 minutes to cool down on your skin, and it becomes a top 10 for me right away. The lavender starts to come through, it smooths itself out, and the blood orange becomes more noticeable with the mossy tonka earthy like accord holding a deeper base closer to the skin while the spices radiate further away. Good silliage in my opinion, could be stronger, but this is coming from me who loves stuff that is hard not to notice since it's so strong, but to the general public, it is sufficient in strength. This is extremely unique, and I have not smelled something day-to-day or at a shopper's drug mart that would come close to this in rarity and smell profile. This can be a signature, I see no issues wearing this in the summer, but maybe not on a humid day. This can be a signature for the right person, but you definitely have to try before you buy. (My bottle is from batches in 2024) smell: opening 3/10 , drydown 9/10 longevity: 7.5/10 sillage: 7-8 / 10 wearability: if it works on your skin, all the time, especially in cooler months. Overall, the uniqueness of this definitely boosts some of the score's influence, but I think it gets a solid 8.7 / 10

This is a criminally underrated fragrance. I will say this to those who trashed this fragrance. I HIGHLY doubt you even smelled it or at the very least had a refined enough pallet to appreciate this fragrance. If you have smelled hundreds of various compositions as I have, then come back to Kalan and try again. I bet you might change your opinion. Or, be stubborn and continue with your toxic banter. With that said, PDM doesn't do interesting stuff like this anymore imo. I can see how some people may say it has slight SLIGHT similarities to BR540. I hate BR540 I love this. If that's any indication of how much of a difference there is between the two. It doesn't have the cotton candy headache inducing sweetness. This is much drier. There is a slight sharpness in the opening that I've smelled from BR540 but that's the extent of it. That settles quickly. It has a classy citrus with a good bit of spices, woods, a bit of a mossy note, with a hint of sweetness. The only environment I wouldn't wear this in is on a hot summer day. You'll be dropping everyone around you. It is deceptively heavier than you may think. For the price you can pick it up at discounters, Kalan is a no brainer pick up, and if you can score a tester even better.

It's pretty good once you get past that bitter citrus opening. I guess that's what putting some people off. I got my bottle for cheap bcaz a dad (whom I bought it from) bought it for his son and he sprayed it once and gave a face so he decided to sell it at a loss. It's decent for now and will give it a full wear to see how it performs. Edit: So I've been wearing it to work and I get around 9-10 hours before it completely becomes a skin scent (no wafts whatsoever). Batch 2422063 (October 2022 84% alc vol). I love the scent and my favourite colour is red, so I had to make it my signature scent. Sweet but bitter and earthy at the same time. Smells really good. It projects strongly for the first 3-4 hours so you will get noticed. All the other PDMs I have are all pre reformulated bottles. This is the only reformulated bottle I own because I just knew I had to have it. Edit: wore this to work 15th of January 2025 and a co worker said he could know I was at work without seeing me because he could smell me as soon as I came thru the door because my cologne is strong.

This fragrance has a very harsh opening with a combination of a dark blood orange note and black pepper, although it is very harsh it is very beautiful. As the top notes fade away, the orange blossom and lavender in the middle shines through with some sweetness from the tonka in the base and some creaminess from the sandalwood! The dry down is the best part of this fragrance, it’s slightly sweet, woody, floral and dark! In my opinion this is one of the best from the house of PDM. It’s also one of the most niche PDM fragrances imo and not many people will like it. Notes are: Top Notes: Spices, Blood Orange, Black Pepper Middle Notes: Lavender, Orange Blossom Base Notes: Woody Notes, Moss, White Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Amber. Projection: 8.0/10, great performance and leaves an intoxicating scent trail! Longevity: 8.5/10, amazing longevity, lasts 10 hours+. Mass appeal: 4.5/10 not a mass appealing fragrance at all and only a certain amount of people will appreciate it. Overall: 8.4/10. An amazing fragrance that is masterfully blended!

I rarely leave Reviews on fragrances, but with all the hate Kalan has gotten I just need to say this. Kalan is my all time favorite fragrance, and the first niche fragrance i ever got my nose on, so it has a special place in my heart. It was love at first sniff and i knew from that moment i just NEEDED to have it in my collection. I can understand why so many people don't like it, because it has an interesting and different smell the most fragrances. It opens with a big hit of citrus, spices and a hint of something sweet burning in the distance. It dries down to something sweet and woody, but you cant shake the feeling of something burning in the distance, or maybe i just forgot to take the pizza out in time, who knows. Anyways, this is a more complex fragrance then the popular designers, so if that's what your used to, then this might not be for you. So do sample first. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones that falls in love with Kalan. Absolute 10/10 to my nose. Good work PDM, i am proud of you

I recently reviewed this on my Youtube "Rotten Rebel" and wanted to share my thoughts on the scent with the fine folks of Fragrantica. Kalan opens up spicy with a sort of bitter kind of citrus. The opening is not my favorite part of the scent and I feel it's very much the opening that some guys don't like. To me, Kalan dries down to something woody with a dose of soft vanilla and a hint of sweetness with something ambery and earthy to it. Fantastic dry down. Love it. One of my most complimented scents of last year and it's an unreal compliment-getter. Even those who usually don't care much about scents like the dry down of Kalan. Not sure why this has such a low rating. Maybe low rating because of the opening scaring some guys away. To me, it's crazy good and the positive reactions I get when wearing it are just a nice bonus. Don't get it if you are sensitive to spicy scents or if you don't enjoy woody scents. Try before you buy. And if you try it, please do try it on skin. Happy days!

This is good stuff from PDM. I love it when I see people complain about all the redundancy in fragrance these days. Then you come across Kalan, and it is like 'WOAH!' Something different! Intriguing! ...And you see the low score. Not because it isn't good, but because it IS different. And it is different in all of the ways that make 'niche', 'niche'. Rabanne ain't releasing this as a 1 million flanker. JPG isn't treading into this territory at your local Macys. And the yootooobers didn't hype it. They've hyped up plenty of shit FAR less wearable than this (OFG, Anyone?) This is a blood-orange, and petrichor. Dirty, in a way that I would have expected TDH to smell, but it doesn't. More like a niche, heavily masculine version of BR540. I don't like BR540 at all, but this, this is great. Supersnobs will put this down, youtubers and 'influencers' will as well, because it is different. Polarizing, maybe. But I love this stuff.

#13 on my Fragrance Review Journey I am pleased with my purchase. The reviews aren't great for this fragrance. I stopped by my local Nordstrom and smelled it on a tester then on my skin. I purchased it the next day off Jomashop. This is not like anything else I have in my collection, which is what I really enjoy. It doesn't smell like any mainstream or mass appealing fragrance. It is truly unique. I love the way the blood orange and spices open up and smack you in the face, in a good way. This is a fragrance you only need to apply sparingly. I would say max 6 sprays. It is a beautiful, room feeling, feel good fragrance. It is very well blended and lasts all day long. This is not blind by safe. However, I think many will find this to be a unique scent to have in their collection. This is a cold weather scent that is inoffensive IMO, and can be worn in casual or formal settings. This includes the office.

Kalan has one of the boldest openings I've ever experienced. The blast of blood orange and black pepper feels sharp, vibrant, and almost metallic, but that's exactly what makes it so addictive. As it develops, the fragrance becomes warmer and smoother, with rich amber and woody notes creating a refined, confident character. This isn't a fragrance I wear to please everyone—it's one I wear because it makes me feel powerful and distinctive. It has a strong presence without relying on excessive sweetness or freshness. Every time I wear it, it reminds me that luxury doesn't have to be loud; sometimes it simply speaks with confidence. Kalan may not be love at first sniff for everyone, but if you give it time, it reveals a personality that's incredibly memorable. For me, it's one of the most unique creations from Parfums de Marly.

I recently blind-bought Kalan, after having collected about ten other PDMs over the last year or so. I knew Kalan was by far the most controversial of their fragrances. Instead of buying a decant, I decided to do a full 2.5oz bottle. When it arrived, I was honestly afraid I would hate it and that I would have to talk myself into liking it. I sprayed some on my arm and took a whiff. Wow! My immediate reaction was, “How in the world is Kalan controversial or disliked? This is absolutely fantastic!” (On top of the amazing scent, performance and projection were also incredible.) I guess one of the great things about fragrances is that they can provide a very personal experience and a wide range of opinions. I respect the fact that for many contributors here, Kalan is a definite no. For me, it’s a masterpiece.

On one arm I have PDM Kalan, and on the other arm I have Montale Woods and Spices. These are 80% similar. The quality of PDM Kalan is a bit better IMHO, but not by far, and it comes across more consistent and spicier, which I like actually. The choice of wood oils in PDM Kalan is nicer, and blend better than those used in Woods and Spices by Montale, and I think that's why some people are put off by the Montale, because it works differently on different skin types. They are both of the same strata of perfumes, and for the layman smelling it off of someone else, they would be hard pressed to get a different impression. If you like the more peppery smell of Kalan pay the extra coin for it, otherwise, if you like the creamy woods of the Montale go for that one. They serve the same purpose.

I smelled this recently and to my nose it smells like a more masculine, rugged and darker version of Baccarat Rouge 540. I prefer this to Baccarat Rouge as a guy because it's not as pretty as BR and I prefer to wear scents that are beautiful but not pretty if that makes any sense. These are my initial thoughts. I'd need to give it far better wearings to offer a legit opinion...It's also very strong but not as loud as Baccarat. Simply Put, this fragrance almost makes Baccarat Rouge, pour femme. No offense to men who own BR...It was on my 'to buy list' too...Before I smelled this...Everyone should wear what they want, i'm trying to help paint a picture of Kalan people can relate to. Very nice, even if a bit derivative...i mean its even in a red bottle...hmmm lmao SIMPLY PUT SCENTS

I ordered Kalan. I had some concerns after reading reviews here and watching many video reviews on YouTube. I liked the olfactory pyramid. So, I decided to order it blindly, even though everyone advises against it. And...? I'm thrilled! It's a beautiful fragrance. I don't see anything polarizing about it. It's not overly spicy. It's not overly earthy. I have over 150 perfumes, and I don't have anything like this in my collection. Kalan is elegant. Interesting. Creamy and spicy. Excellent projection and longevity. It's not a perfume for the masses because it's not boringly generic. No aquatic or bubblegum mainstream. A scent for people with an opinion. For those who don't always go with the flow. For me, it's a 10/10.

Very decisive fragrance, but I love it. One of the most unique releases from PDM. Lots of spices with the blood orange up top. Also heavy on the lavender and moss. This stuff lasts a long time as well, and could definitely be worn as a signature scent. As much as I enjoy this fragrance, I can see why it gets very mixed opinions. If you enjoy earthy and spicy fragrances, definitely give it a sample. It's definitely a love or hate fragrance. People give PDM crap for not making "niche" smelling scents, but then completely look over fragrances like kalan, akaster, habdan, etc. I get about 9 to 10 hours of longevity, with a strong projection. I've gotten compliments as well, and smells great in the air. Overall: 8/10

My more succinct review. Now that my bottle arrived. This is highly addicting! Beautiful red bottle. Peppery, dark mossy, semi-sweet, mysterious and woody. In the fall and winter this will be absolutely amazing and unique. And I can easily see tons of outside interest. With a real spray from an atomizer as opposed to my 1ml sample dabber it is even better as I get the full experience, so I recommend sampling it that way. And when you do, give it a couple different days as it has to be understood. 10/10 Only for people with real confidence Only downside is that it’s 84%; PdM is suffering from greed it seems. They should go back to making their original 78% all around before they end up like Creed

When I tried it first opening was too harsh for me but after 15 minutes this perfume becomes an amazing. After many times I used it I get used to opening and MAAN, I love this fragrance. Beside this and Layton exc., I don't think de marly fragrances has a niche quality. Perfumes are always a path, a definition of a person, not a note or accord to me.Niche perfumes are for people who taste it and love it because of its every little detail, every single feeling that perfumes giving. Because of that I always thought this perfume is an ultra NİCHE perfume. Kalan is masculine and sexy fragrance. I don't care a bit what other people says about it. I just LOVE it.

One of my favorite scents!! Definitely not for the faint of heart fragrance users... The opening has a potential to turn away noses due to the strong bitter orange and spices, but the heart and base notes sink beautifully into the skin. The smell is complex, attention grabbing, bold, and you need a confident aura to match it. Although the scent is definitely geared towards usage by men, I know of many women who enjoy wearing this scent as well. A good option for all seasons, too. In summer, the spices mixed with heat could make the scent overbearing to some around you, but I think it's an excellent choice for special events or if you want to stand out.

Sampled this today at a shop and man I definitely see how folks wouldn't like this, but me? AMAZING. I almost regret grabbing a bottle of Layton, but I definitely will be grabbing a bottle of this in the very near future no doubt at all. This has something to it, the earthiness of it, with the spices, immense pepper vibe, lavender, it just smells great. A little more maybe mature if you will, but nothing I wouldn't wear as I'm 31. I felt like the way the spices and pepper hit with the sandalwood, its just so perfect. Will end up caving and grabbing a bottle I'm sure, and will give a total review when I get it.

This is the first PDM I ever bought, and I absolutely love it. Its wild, and classy at the same time. It smells like burning volcanic rocks and that makes for such a unique, head turning scent profile. It doesn't have that great of a performance in high tropical areas and high heat, definitely something that wants to be worn at night or in the A/C. I wouldn't exactly call it blind buy safe, as to some people that burning gunpowder smell can be off putting. I would imagine a villain in a black suit and an unbuttoned crimson red silk shirt to smell like this. More masculine and overall smells dangerous.

This is goergous! I dare to say this is one of the best PDM's out there. It is piercing with it's citrus notes, very warm with spices and has some kind of ashtray note hidden in somwhere but there are lots of sweetness that saves this perfume. It has an evil, bold type of character within. The only 2 cons I can possibly give are: 1- So strong, lasts on my hand 16 hours and on clothing it will stay there FOREVER! My coat still smells Kalan and I tested on myself nearly a month ago. 2- It is polarizing, not for those who dislike intense woods and DO NOT expect any compliments with it.

My most complemented fragrance by far. I understand the negative reviews but have to think that opinions must be based off a sample spray in store. The opening I agree is a challenge and if you overspray you’ll regret it. This comes into its self in the dry down. The creamy tonka, amber and lavender are such a smooth mix that will for sure turn heads. I get the resemblance to BR540... it’s there but in a more masculine way. Not enough of similarity to be mistaken it’s 100% its own thing. One for the colder weather but this will stay in my collection for ever.

I love Kalan, so special, warm, no no, hot, scorching hot, and I mean both temperature and spice, with lovely oranges/citrus, and depth. I think the red bottle is a perfect descriptor of the scent profile. Performance is amazing, and smells fantastic to others, just don't burry your nose in it after your spray it, fragrances are meant to be smelled around the person unless in intimate situations, which this one is not best disposed for. I would dress up for this one. This is what niche is supposed to be, not the clone they call Percival.

My take on Kalan is simple- if you can weather the first 20-30 minute spice storm that comes at you in the top, then the heart and base notes make up for it. Brings in a lot of compliments, more so than any other of my PDMs except Layton and Haltane. Biggest problem I see is when to wear it. Not the office unless you do two sprays max. Not the long summer in the south. So that is the main problem with it to me. It’s different, more unique than other PDM offerings.

Despite the polarized opinions surrounding this variant of parfums de marly, perhaps it really depends on the sense of smell and what one can perceive. I support it not just because kalan reminds me of BR540 and I'm a fan of it, but because I genuinely admire how this fragrance was crafted. It mingles nutty, musky, woody, and peppery notes into a harmonious blend that I find truly pleasant. And to tell the truth it remains one of PDMs finest creations.

When i first tried this on my wrist i quickly wrote it off, it was way too spicy for me, but after giving it another try during winter i now see why people like it, its definitely a cold weather fragrance and after going in-between buying or not buying a full bottle, i just now ordered a full bottle. This is definitely not a blind buy safe fragrance, it does punch you in the nose during summer, also don't over spray, 2 sprits is more than enough. 9/10

Can remember if it was Althair or Kalan but ONE of em has that Layton Vicks Vapo Rub (not so much up front but hiding right behind the spices) from beginning-mids... Anywho... Kalan is definitely a unique one. Remind me of Sundays in a a large, old fashioned, Catholic Cathedral, the incense burned during service. The smell of the incense smoke mixed with the weathered wood of the pews. Such an inviting smell... Definitely a cold weather performer.

Unique exotic beauty and true niche quality. If you want to stand out of the crowd, this is it. Kalan is not bubble gum sweet fragrance that every dudes wear. It has a special character and it will be awesome on confident men, or even women, who wear this with pride. The most unique creation from PDM to date, imo. That's why Kalan is not for everyone. Try it if you haven't, you might fall in love... or not. Who knows?

Most niche from PdMs. Opens with blood orange, black peper and ... ackward earthy/"basement" tones. This earthy/ashy tones makes this scent so polarizing. You like it or hate it. With drydown these notes are almost gone. Then lot of people notice and complement. Projection and longevity monster. If You like niche this one is for You. I abolutelly love it next to Layton Exclusif, Persival and Haltane. Not a blind buy.

I *love* this! I am an older woman, and I tend to wear men’t fragrances because I prefer subtle woody/spicy fragrances rather than over-the-top sweet ones. Nowadays, there are even quite a few really sweet men’s scents, but not this one. Fifty years ago, if I had smelled this on a man, I would have been immediately drawn to him. Alas, those days are gone, but I can still enjoy the wonderful spicy, woody scent.

I Love Kalan it's my wife's favorite fragrance on me and I own over 1,000 bottles. It can be a challenging fragrance but give it time and you'll understand this juice. I occasionally layer it w BR540 or Instant Crush to give it a kick and it works!! Big compliment getter especially at night and when weather is in the 60s. It's a beastmode fragrance and it's so unique. Kalan will always be in my collection 9/10

I'm glad so many bad reviews, once discontinued they'll suck the teet of this one like sheeple love Layton, which is really good as well, but is directed there by other sheeple. This fragrance is an earthly complex delight. NO YOU CANNOT OVER SPRAY just go back home and put your ck 1 on. This site has too many unsophisticated fragrance users. Sad this is an expensive brand though.

Woman here and I wear this as my signature scent. It is the most exquisite, spicy & woody & fresh scent. It’s very classy and, even if people say it’s masculine leaning, I find it extremely feminine because of the blood orange. On my skin it’s beautiful! Very special fragrance, you need to have an acquired taste to understand the love for this scent. Try it before buying.

Don’t understand the hate in the comments. This scent is definitely for someone who likes spicy/sweet scents, this is actually quite beautiful it’s smooth yet spicy but not too spicy. Perfect for winter, also lasts really long started on a 2ml ended up buying a 2.5oz. everyone’s nose is different but i definitely recommend buying a decant and testing this.

Kalan is absolutely beautiful. I disagree with almost everyone on this scent. I don’t think it’s a winter/cold weather fragrance, it would make a great all year signature fragrance. The most predominant note is the lavender which makes it smell like fresh linen mixed with a very slight bit of pepper and sea salt. In my top 5 from the house.

Most manly, most niche and one of the better performer from the house, propably one of my favorite with Galloway. It is strong, but if you put only 2 sprays you can wear it anywhere. You go clubbing? Put on 10 sprays and you will get noticed in a good way :) performance for me is around 8-10 hours. This is testosterone in the bottle 💪🏼

Listen, I dont know what makes this a 10/10 for me, but it is. Its slightly fresh, little wet, very woody, quite sweet, almost a juicy fruit of some sort. I find this fragrance to be absolutely stunning. I think all opinions are valid, but even as someone who absolutely loves this frag, TRY IT FIRST. It could def be polarizing to some.

I’ve wanted this for years and finally got it today. I love that it’s divisive. Less people wearing it is better for me. A stone cold killer for the fall and winter. It gets tiring to keep saying “kalan” being asked again and again what it is I’m wearing. I have this and Layton from pdm. Both are in a class of their own.

PdM - Kalan is my favourite perfume of all time. It has a very strong note of blood orange and lavender that smells like a 12V car battery. The projection is LOUD and metallic almost like sunlight hitting a freshly cleaned car kind of smell. I have been wearing Kalan since 2022 and bought it again in May 2026.

The longer you go without enjoying a fragrance. The better it becomes. This is so fucking sexy... haha like men needs to start getting into slightly sweeter unisex earthy smells like this, there's no way someone smells this amd thinks "ew" unless you spray 5 or more times. 4 shots of this is plenty for HOURS.

Ooh kalan my kalan, this is a really well made fragrance compliment magnet, its fresh, peppery, smoky at the same time, pfff . Celine Ripert is a genius. well done bravo. And people saying its like br540 , stop it, they dont smell the same its not blind buy safe . Its a hit or miss. Not for everyone
