Papyrus Oud 71

Let me start off by first saying I have Gucci Pour Homme 1 since it came out. Before that I had CDG Man 2. I recently acquired Bentley Absolute and Papyrus Oud. Let’s put CDG man 2 to the side as it’s a wetter version of this DNA. GPH1 is dry, woody smokey, peppery. Bentley Absolute is even drier. And out of the hundreds of fragrances I’ve ever smelt, it was the first time ever that I felt the need to scrub a fragrance off my skin. That stuff is bone dry. Now to Papyrus Oud. Obviously if there is any oud in here it’s synthetic but it’s very hard to detect. You have to really go looking for it. But that’s not the point of this fragrance. It was supposed to be a remake of GPH1. And it excels in that department. It is 99% the same. The only differences I can detect is that it is not AS dry as GPH1. And it is only a very slight difference. This could be the oud note providing it a light resinous quality. I do get the slightest hint of sweetness in the dry down coming from the vanilla which is a welcome introduction. It stops the scent becoming to stuffy which I think Bentley Absolute suffers from. Papyrus Oud also smells less synthetic and better blended than Bentley Absolute. Papyrus Oud is the true successor of Gucci Pour Homme 1. Yes it is expensive. But it’s cheaper than what people charge for GPH1 online. This is your best bet if you want this DNA. Performance is better than the others too. Don’t waste your money on a 15+ year old bottle of GPH1. The King is dead. Long live the King.

This was another unexpected revelation, and a fragrance I fell in love with immediately. I received a sample alongside a full bottle of Orris Tattoo, and it took exactly one wear for me to order a large bottle of this as well. It’s intoxicating in the most refined, elegant way, deeply comforting, but never lazy or dull. I reach for it constantly, especially at night. It’s warm, dry, and impeccably clean, and in my opinion it’s quite simply the best woody fragrance I’ve ever encountered. It’s also hands-down my favourite woody scent from Parle Moi de Parfum. What really sets it apart is the balance. Despite the extensive list of ingredients, nothing juts out or feels discordant. Every element is perfectly integrated, working in harmony to create a hyper-realistic, enveloping woody scent. It wears beautifully for seven to eight hours, projecting to about arm’s length for the first five before settling closer to the skin in the most comforting way. Even the following day, I can still catch traces of the oud lingering softly, warm, refined, and faintly bitter in a way I didn’t expect to enjoy, but absolutely do. That subtle bitterness adds character without ever tipping into harshness. Of all the woody fragrances in the Parle Moi lineup, this is the standout. Confident, polished, and utterly addictive. Frankly? It’s the tits.

I have never smelled Gucci PH, so I can't speak about that association. If you drenched Encre Noire in sunlight then maybe this is what it would smell like, but I still don't think it's a fair assessment of what this scent brings to the table. On first spray I thought 'Gee whiz, who thought that Oud could smell so fresh, light and green?'. Then I checked the notes and it's not even listed... so this is an oud accord which makes sense for the price. The incense and green notes are dry, lush and super aromatic. If the florals play any role then they only serve to smooth out the rough edges and bring balance to the main notes. This is a great blend of young and mature, aromatic enough for the day yet dark enough for the night. I could see myself wearing this very, very often. The longevity and projection are solid, projection is good enough for people to notice and longevity is good enough to see you through the whole day. The person who wears this is not trying to be bombastic, but deserves to be taken seriously. I'm a huge fan, I actually think this would be great as a daywear/ warm weather option. Edit: I tore through the sample and have ordered a full bottle. This is a real chameleon on my skin, about 12 hours in it morphs into a dry tonka/ musk heavy skin scent which I'm in love with.

SEASONS: Definately suitable for cold and cooler weather but I won't vote on seasons yet. I am in South China and the hot, sticky summer hasn't started yet. I will try this on a hot day though, see how it goes. It's spring now and has worked fine in the evenings here. Hope it works in the summer evenings too. SCENT: I was actually looking for a summer fragrance for high humidity but was curious about PO (a seasonal distraction). Basically I finished off a 2ml decant and loved it. I ordered a 100ml bottle that turned up today. I showered and sprayed 6 times. This full bottle is 10 times better than the sample. I LOVE this. The olibanum is perfect, so pronounced. And the cedar makes it incredibly sexy. I notice a dark chocoloate thing later in the performance. The vetiver is nice and dry, the whole thing is dry. I enjoyed Private Label by Jovoy and this shares some of the same qualities, but this offers much more. Papyrus Oud has quickly becomes a top 10 fragrance for me. PERFORMANCE: I can smell myself without trying for a solid 3 hours, after that it stays closer to the skin. Not sure if other people can smell me or not. Will update this review at a later date.

Got this off from Mr. P’s recommendation. Never smelled the original GPH so can’t comment on its similarities. This stuff is incredible, though. ATH also has a review, and its spot on. He rationalizes this creation as “geometric”, which I feel is a perfect representation. The formulation is sterile, clinical, geometric, with infinite precision and technical balance. Papyrus oud is a very poor name. My feeling of this scent is that this should be an modern architect’s scent. Obsessively perfectionist, everything in balance, harmony. Clean, geometric angles, natural materials, but their wildness tamed, wrestled under human control. Man’s supremacy over nature, over entropy. Wood prints in concrete. Supreme scent. Office safe, leans mature. A bit disappointing in its lack of meaningful development, but the scent profile itself is immacculate. A man in control.

Papyrus Oud 71 by Parle Moi de Parfum is a woody, aromatic, and spicy fragrance that showcases a beautifully balanced composition. Identical to the masterpiece Gucci PH 1 according to Michel Almariac's son who runs his perfumery in Paris. PO71 has a milky smooth quality from the sandalwood and orris, smokey resins, and a woody quality. There is also a big hit of Papyrus which is one of my favorite notes. The quality of the woods in PO71 also reminds me a bit of Diptyque Tam Dao EDP. Creamy, smokey (incense). resinous woods is the best way I can describe this if you have no reference point. Definitely worth a sample if you're not bothered by smokey papyrus, and full bottle worthy in my opinion. Smell 10/10 Performance 7/10 P. S. Bond Dubai Platinum smells very close to this, but this one is better and performance is better. The perfumer for this, Gucci PH 1, Bond Dubai Platinum, and Bentley Absolute, are all Michel Almariac.

A darkly spiced, dry vetiver, the oud is a cleaner base for the potent earthy, herbal scent to sit upon. This is another surprising Papyrus (a note I thought I didn't like incidentally) along with Clive Christian E I've tried recently. This has much more of a traditional origin in things like GPH1 and CdG 2 Man and more pariferally Wonderoud and Encre Noire. To be fair to this it actually transitions further than any of the ones mentioned above, changing from an obvious masculine oud opening to spicy smoked woods and then earthy drydown. There's clearly incense and maybe hints of patchouli with papyrus and vetiver looming large. This stuff is great. I really enjoyed it.

This is a masculine leaning unisex scent that works well in cooler temperatures like fall and early spring. It does a great job at eliciting the imagery of dry papyrus and ancient sandy places. It starts out fresh, dry, and sharp to my nose with peppery and sour top and middle notes (the papyrus and incense) paired with a warm woody base. Over time, the scent transforms from a sharp smokey profile to something warm and subdued. I get a lot of creaminess on the dry down, but the peppery dry papyrus hangs around the entire time. The ginger noted in the description gives the overall scent profile a sense of warmth. It's a lovely scent that I enjoy wearing.

This smells like a blend of Gucci Pour Homme 2003, Some notes of La Nuit de L'homme and Comme des Garcon Avignon Incense. Really well blended. About 70% similar to Gucci Pour Homme 2003. This is as close to that you will get. Quite nice. I do think Gucci Pour Homme 2003 was a bit richer. Maybe Parle Moi de Parfum can make a richer and deeper version of this. Papyrus Oud 71 Parfum edition. I have no idea why Oud is mentioned here. There is no Oud. Maybe it's a combination of spices that has an Oud Like Accord.

I was very disappointed when Gucci Pour Homme was discontinued and my last unused bottle was stolen by builders who took it from my bathroom cupboard when installing a new bathroom. So when I saw The Perfume Guy's video about Papyrus Oud being Gucci Pour Homme redux I quickly snapped it up. If my memory serves me correctly I think it is better than the Gucci which softened to a sweet whiff as it died down. This is slightly heavier.

While there are many notes listed, the most dominant ones to my nose are Olibanum, Papyrus and an oud accord. Together, the notes are beautifully put together in a way that each that creates an amazing contrast between the smokey resins and the green but slightly dry papyrus. Great fragrance overall and probably the best from this brand so far. 9/10

Very similar to Gucci ph 1. I love this scent. Woody pencil shaving type of fragrance. Also a bit like Wonderwood, but almost identical to the discontinued GPH 1.

Personally I think that Papyrus Oud is much better quality than Bentley Absolute and for me it's closer to Gucci Pour Homme. I am very pleased with this purchase!

It’s the closest thing you will get to Gucci (2003) same perfumer, same notes, beautiful scent. No reason to over analyze the one. It’s lovely.

This is GPH. No doubt about it. Bentley Absolute smells like oxtail soup, it's utter garbage. Save your money and buy this instead.

The 2003 release by Gucci of a scent it called Pour Homme met with too little sales success and it was eventually discontinued. Today, this discontinued fragrance is widely known as Gucci Pour Homme I (even though the original Gucci Pour Homme was actually released in 1976-- because the scent was ultimately supplanted by the better selling flanker that Gucci called "Gucci Pour Homme II"). GPH 1 is much missed and sorely lamented, but it has now risen phoenix-like in the guise of Papyrus Oud/71. The nose on the two scents is the same, Michel Almairac, and he says the two fragrances are essentially identical. More importantly, they smell virtually indistinguishable with only subtle improvements in ingredient quality accounting for these minor differences. Papyrus Oud is the beneficiary of the better quality, by the way. So if you are one of those folks who dearly loved and miss Pour Homme I, rather than pay the extortionate prices the fragrance arbitrageurs ask for the Gucci, just get this fragrance (unless part of your fun is seeking out hard to acquire discontinued fragrances). I won't say too much about this fragrance's notes because they are well summarized in several of the earlier reviews. I will just mention that this is a very smooth, well blended scent with decent longevity and moderate projection. The bottle is attractive, if pretty ordinary looking and the atomizer on my bottle is pretty good. The note pyramid for this one, and the reviews below, question if there is any oud in this fragrance at all. I believe that there is oud in the top notes of this scent. It is the slight amount of oud that accounts for the subtle sweetness and thickness of the woody papyrus top note. Without the oud, I think the papyrus would be bone dry and disappear so fast that it would be barely perceptible. As is, the papyrus oud opening is probably the best part of this scent and it stays around for up to half an hour. Anyway, this is nice stuff and definitely worth seeking out if you miss the 2003 version of Gucci Pour Homme or never got to experience it and want to see what it was like.

Bit of a riddler: why can't I love it with my whole heart? Friendly, warm, light, sweetish, bone-dry papery-dusty sandalwood sawdust, in the nicest possible way. Or is it really just a great big slush of generic Iso E Super, that anonymous every-wood that's everywhere on nearly everyone in nearly everything? At first I was afraid (but not petrified) that this might be too dark or acrid or butch or niche for me, but not a bit of it; there's a lovely lightly herbal tang but nothing too weird, drifts of spice waft by every now and then, but nothing gets too punchy. Vetiver and patchouli held in such perfect balance that I can't even pick them out - the best sort of treatment for those two often-bullying notes imho. It's got a fine and steady hand, then - evokes some of the best bits of, say, Xerjoff Ivory Route or Santal 33, but somehow there's ... something missing, and I don't even know what it is. It's classily nuanced, true unisex to my nose (as long as you like dry-woody scents), boasts strong-to-solid performance... robust arm's length sillage and longevity up to 7-8 on skin, an absolute AGE on me. So it's a really really strong like, and yet I can't figure out just what the missing ingredient would be to make it GREAT. Will wear out my decant of it perfectly happily but it somehow just doesn't motivate me to chase after it with more gusto. Perhaps a case of "Nice - very nice indeed - but dull."

I'm absolutely loving this one. Definitely in the top 5 of the last huge bunch of samples I got. Resinous woods - embers, vento nel vento, this - always bring up nice childhood memories for me. I used to summer by my grandparent's wooden lake-house which always smelled of tree sap and woods. The bamboo roofing would attract bees, and resins would ooze out of the wooden panel boards. Everything there was natural and rustic, my grandpa would often saw and mend things out of wood, and there was always a smell of resinous sun-kissed woodchips all around. This is not too masculine, more on the sweet side and the papyrus - a note that is often screechy and dry - is quite tame here. Light earthy florals and herbs wafting in the air as well. Also - oud? I smell none! Mostly olibanum, sandalwood, soft cedar and papyrus. Took it off the want / love list because the drydown is not a love for me. Like though because memories and great opening / first hour.

I didn't know it at the time, but when I received Papyrus Oud 71 from Parle Moi de Parfum directly, it came with a perfumed card attached to the outside of the box. Whenever I would open my closet, the most beautiful cardboard scent greeted me. So, I went looking for the culprit. I even contacted one of the Chanel sellers to ask if they had perfumed their box, as I had multiple boxes in my closet. After I gifted Papyrus Oud 71 to my father, and he sprayed it, I recognized the smell and couldn't believe it! Papyrus Oud smells so luxurious on paper. On skin and clothing, the oud might stick out. Give this perfume time to dry down; spray your undergarments in advance, rather than your coat or jacket. Longevity won't be an issue.

I've smelled all three at some point in time, the original master piece GPH1, Bentley For Men Absolute, and now this one. I wished they'd just bring back the one and only original. Loved everything about it. Scent, color and bottle were just on spot. Having said that, all three end of day are very similar. I seriously doubt more than a few very seasoned fragrance connoisseurs could actually smell a difference that is large enough to justify buying one over the other - considering the difference in price. 100ml of this juice is 5x of Bentley. And let's not even start with some leftover original GPH1 available on dubious platforms. Don't let the advertisement get to you ;) .

I agree with the general sentiment that most of the notes listed are not easily detected. What I do smell is a very pleasant papery dry oud, cedar, papyrus, and incense. There is a very subtle amber sweetness but this is mostly a well judged blend of woods. I imagine a brown paper bag full of oud chips and incense sticks. I believe this is a strong and charismatic scent cloud. A well balanced woody fragrance for a serious man. 8.2/10

Punchy, powdery, woody, spicy oud. It’s dark but airy as it fizzes with wood ‘n’ spice. It’s very well done with a courageous strength of confidence that proudly projects. You know I’m a chica who likes the masculine woods. If the high-street oud’s are too commercial but the Arabian oud’s are too heavily skanky, then this is your perfect oud.

This is very similar to Avestan, you get spicy notes and mostly a smoky paper accord. I prefer it to Avestan, avestan presents itself a lot spicier and drier but the citruses wets the spicy woody a little bit and makes it a bit more tolerable. Quite nice as a skin scent but this type of DNA isn't too much for me

This is the most beautful men's perfume in the world. Better than GPH - more refined and complex. But, on my skin, I get only 2 hours. So sad, I love this and love the folks at the Paris boutique at Mabillon. Please, make this last longer...please...

I tried this at the Parle Moi de Parfum store in Paris and it struck me as somewhat a simulacrum of Tom Ford’s Oud Wood - but not quite as 'warm' or 'sweet' as Oud Wood - and if you like TF Oud Wood then buy this for 100€ cheaper.

Papyrus Oud starts off old school - woody, powdery, herbal & earthy. It is kept from becoming too heavy by a sour freshness of citrus fruits & ginger. Papyrus is an interesting note here, and along with the powdery herbs, it is potentially divisive. The opening and heart melds into one for me, and Papyrus Oud remains fairly complex throughout. The nose feel is challenging to start, however - the fine powder borders on unpleasantness for me. The woodiness changes gradually, less challenging over time, as more familiar notes of precious woods, vetiver, and patchouli become more apparent. The scent also becomes warmer and cleaner as the hours go by, settling into a smell that is more appealing. Performance is good - projects moderately, with good longevity. Overall, a complex, elegant scent which is both green and woody. Smells slightly dated to me, and the nose feel is too overwhelming in its dusty powderiness - not something I'd wear myself. Worth a smell, but definitely not a perfume to blind buy.

Testing blind I get what feels like a relatively low intensity vetiver body with a hint of characteristic smoke and an element of herbs at the top end. Like others from this house it is rather mild, and like other fragrances from this house it sits quite intimate. The difference here sadly is I don't get much after 4-5 hours, whereas others while being just as intimate were long lasting. Looking at the notes, it's a humourous. With how intimate and subtle the whole fragrance is, I can't imagine one can pick out most of these. The vetiver, yes. frankincense, yes, some herbs notes , a bit. The papyrus, I guess. Most the others, or some citrus top notes, no - not really at all. The initial few minutes are quite nice, but it just doesn't really say much if we're talking. This leaves the price point a little more difficult to talk about. A pass for me - a nice concept though.

Reminds me of tide detergent or a scented tropical plug in for your house. Makes you smell clean but it’s really weak, might do better in the heat than the cold.

Indeed Gucci Pour Homme. Very genuine and nice but I think a bit lighter then the original GPH and not something I need to own and wear again.

Smells very masculine. Leathery papyrus for sure. Not for me. -

Smells wonderful at first but as some time goes by, becomes a headache. Might be good for someone else.

Complex, parched paper, light spice and floral-fresh accord in that subtle aromatic men's cologne type of way. It's a beautiful mix of herbs and woods with a dry amber in the base. It leans towards spicy, with hints of ginger and citrusy herbs, and a base of olibanum that cuts through to the top, but remains smooth and relaxing. The heart has jasmine and rose-like flourishes with a touch of orris and lavender that feels familiar of other vintage fragrances like guerlain. It's soft and elegant, but never loud. I don't know where the oud impression comes from, but I almost get a cocoa note that's probably a combination of earthy spice and vanilla. Lots of depth and nuance which will keep me smelling my sample, but I feel like the oud impression dampens the impact as a whole and muddies the structure into something a bit confusing. Someone mentioned cardboard and I do think this is a type of brown, paper fragrance if that makes sense. It's dry, lacking sweetness, and can come off a bit stale, but in a clean and very pretty way.

I love the scent profile: woody, smoky, incensy, spicy. It's very mysterious, very masculine, 30+. However, there's one thing that the opening strongly reminds me of and unfortunately I cannot un-smell it; salmiak. Salty, black liquorice. It's astringent. I wish I had never made this link, because now every time I spray it I think of these salmiak candies and I never like it when a fragrance reminds me of food. I don't have this with Bentley Absolute, but that one is a bit of a mess. As for other similarities: I have only smelled the original GPH once and to my scent memory this smells super close indeed. CDG2Man is really not that close. Yes, it's in the same scent category, it's incensy, woody and it smells similar to the smoke of a blown out candle, but it doesn't have the salty 'salmiak' opening and has a ton of aldehydes that Papyrus Oud 71 doesn't have. As for PO71's longevity, very short lived on my skin; after two hours it almost disappears. My skin is quite dry and drinks fragrances.

I find this honestly enchanting. It is dry, papery, as papyrus would suggest. But it does smell like a plant, almost as much as it smells like an ancient library. Definitely woody and resinous as well, with the olibanum making itself known and a bit of that certain floral/spicy note from pink pepper. It is dry but warm, cozy, not cold-- and yet I still get the sense that this would do just as well in warm weather as in cool. To me it has a note reminiscent of the creosote plants you can smell on a hot day in some deserts, when the heat makes the resins in the plant disperse into the air. It's one of the only ones in my recent batch of samples that I had to keep going back for, to try again and see what nuance I will catch on the next try. And, though I don't normally count this as a good thing, I'd describe this as very accessible-- I really think most people will like it, few will turn their noses at such a lovely fragrance. Performance is solid too, for something so affordable.

EDIT: and here we are, I've got my own bottle. I have to admit this is a gem in a fragrance world and if you like woody, smoky, dry fragrances this is a must have for you. However, my personal ranking from trio made by the very same perfumer looks like this: 1. Bentley Pour Homme Absolute 2. Gucci Pour Homme I 3. Parle Moi Papyrus Oud Review from May 2020: I own few mililiters of this scent for a while now. If Bentley for Men Absolute was a darker reincarnation of Gucci Pour Homme I, Parle Moi Papyrus Oud 71 is even darker reinterpretation of Bentley Pour Homme Absolute. It smells like 80% of Bentley and 20% of darkness. Don't know for sure but if anyone asked me about the reason why it is so dark and kinda' heavy I would say it's because of loads of papyrus. So it is named aptly. I agree that it is somehow resemblant with Lalique Encre Noire. Don't know how, it just is. Longevity is over 12 hours, sillage is bigger than Bentley's. I like it because of its darkness.

Ah, the first ten minutes of this were so much fun! A wonderful dry and sticky papyrus woody zest with a curious sweetness below, a really fun companion for the drive to work. There were a lot of notes vying for attention for the next twenty minutes of wear while I settled into my work day; a good mature patchouli, lemon and flowers in a bright dance, herbs and sandalwood. I kept getting a different impression as I caught it while I moved around. At around the one hour mark my personal curse arrived and turned the vanilla/tonka into a dull, mouldy-sweet version of themselves, and I had to wash it off. But if your skin plays well with vanilla I think this could be fun, I would certainly enjoy this for a nice workday adventure, it didn't seem to travel too far but kept me company. I'll have to pass my little sample on, but I won't damn it outright just because I ruined the vanilla in it.

I really, really wanted this to smell like Gucci pour Homme I. That is one of my favourite fragrances, and while I’m lucky enough to have a couple of bottles, they are becoming rare and rarer on the market and I was looking for a viable alternative. I appreciate the Parle Moi de Parfum brand story that says Almairac essentially copied the recipe for Gucci pour Homme I, but smelling both side-by-side I can confirm they are close, but not exact. As one reviewer below has said, the addition of the Oud note really changes the scent profile in the mid to dry downstage. It’s missing that je ne sais quoi you find with Gucci pour Homme I and Tom Ford was a great curator to take the Oud out of the original draft.

Well, this is certainly beautiful, perhaps a notch drier and more herbal than Bentley for Men Absolute also by the same perfumer, but in the development they get closer and closer together. They both share an oud note which is missing in Gucci PH. For the money, I'm not convinced that it justifies a price tag several times that of the Bentley. This is supposed to be the original formula for Gucci PH before Tom Ford made a few editorial changes - so devotees of the Gucci should definitely try it.

This fragrance reminds me of Asdaaf’s Majd Al Sultan - perhaps a higher quality, more expensive version but they’re SO similar to my nose. I tried wearing Papyrus Oud because the deep, amber aroma is intriguing. It reminds me of a fir tree forest at night with smoke billowing in the air, but it’s so obviously masculine that I couldn’t make it work. I tried this on my husband but even on him it was too strong. I think it could be amazing in the right climate on the right person.

Granted, I knew what I was getting into with this one due to its name - but the synthetic oud note being used here cannot go unnoticed as it completely ruins everything for me. Its rubbery, leathery, and extremely noticeable after smelling so many fragrances with this note embedded in the background. I love GPH, but its far too expensive to own these days, and quite frankly, its one of the Gucci's I could live without. So its safe to say I could live without this one too.

Papyrus Oud 71 is Gucci Pour Homme reborn :,). The scent is absolutely beautiful; rich, woodsy and never boring. Easily signature scent worthy. I love this fragrance DNA. Unfortunately it gives me a bad headache (as most woody perfumes do) so I can't wear it. For those of you who aren't bothered by synthetic woods though, please try Papyrus Oud 71. It is so good. I'm sad that I can't enjoy it myself.

I smelled it today , after dry down it between cdg 2man and Bentley absolute, but 70% close to gucci pour homme 2003 , it between them all , I have the gucci and Bentley and comme des garcons in my house , it nice and long lasting, 85% close to Bentley, 85% close to cdg , it nice and worth to buy .

This scent has nothing to do with Encre Noire or Tom Ford Oud Wood. This is a unique scent. As Michel Almairach's Son (who is running the Parle moi de Parfum brand) put it, Papyrus Oud is the same fragrance as discontinued gem Gucci pour Homme. Any other questions? Review from Oct 11 2020

I have two samples of this from another purchase at Parle Moi. It is heavily dominated by papyrus to the point it is cloying. Bentley Man Absolute is a much better fragrance - it's better balanced and has a much lower cost. I see no reason to go for this one

For someone who already has Bentley Absolute it is probably redunant. If you do not own Bentley yet, have GPH1 cravings and can purchase this one, go ahead. I think the quality and longevity is better on Parle Moi, so it justifies the higher price tag.

Yes, smells like Gucci Pour Homme but it's a bit better in my opinion. The scent seems updated in a good way. Where I loved GPH I still felt like there was something cloying about it. That is gone here. A slight evolution. Love the scent.
