Blasted Heath

I've worn this one a few times now and I will say with a certainty, it is the most interesting of my marine fragrances. Not a genre I'm super well versed in but I have plenty. Standard bottle and sprayer for Penhaligon's, very nice. Labeling is etched rather than the typical sticker which makes the presentation much nicer. Definitely the most interesting marine scent I have, though I always end up in the same place with aquatics. Salty, cool, blue. As others have stated, not as "beachy" as most aquatics. It retains that salty aquatic smell but undoubtedly more melancholy. A bit mysterious. Another reviewer's description of a windswept naval deck of old is pretty on point. It is the water of the deepest ocean I could imagine. Moreso than Bvlgari Aqua Atlantique which was my former "best of" in the category. It actually smells like a deep ocean, rather than relying on a synth note to be pleasing to every nose. This one doesn't do "mainstream", meaning no ambrox notes of any kind. It's not trying to be pleasing to the crowd yet I think it still is. I think year round is fine for this one, it's not particularly summery. All ages. I would go casual with this one but the whiskey note gives it a mature edge that could be good for any situation. Performance very respectable. I really like this and I think it will grow on me further.

A deep marine, salty aquatic. No fruity citrus or bright, light notes, just cold seaspray, windblown grass, seaweed, and salt. Slight boozy wood or whisky note in the background. Quite strong and long lasting. Bracingly refreshing and heavy at the same time. Sort of a cool/cold weather aquatic. Not light enough for warmer weather. Darker and more marine than Bvlgari Aqua. Smells high quality. Easily the strongest sillage/longevity of a Penhaligon’s (I’m a fan but they’re stuff is often notoriously short lived and weak). A distinct, and well crafted take on a dark, marine aquatic. Penhaligon’s description of the cold sea meeting the British countryside is vividly accurate - really suits that type of maritime climate too - Pacific Northwest, for ex. would be a perfect climate for BH.

This is just the niche version of Bvlgari Aqva to me. Hell, I actually like it better than Bvlgari as the sharp seaweed note (or is it calone) is more toned down and that makes this fragrance much better balanced. On the downside, it is weak- in projection as well as longetivity! However, all things said and done, if available at a decent price, this could easily be a dumb reach for the summer.

Wonderful scent. Cold beach. Northern beach. Aquatic in a cold, salty way. Sweetens up a bit after an hour, perhaps that's the whiskey and tobacco coming through. I like Blasted Heath but I can't say I love it...it's a watery, deep sea concoction, with a bright windswept edge...however, it seems to be missing something as there's no warmth to it...and there seems to be a million other perfumes just like it...worth trying at least...

This is what Wuthering Heights smell like to me! The wet cold air carry the salty sea note, the green meadow, the earthy note of the dirt and cliff, the liquor and tobacco.

We have a cool one today. Blasted Heath by Penhaligon's is said to remind people of a pleasant stroll along the British coastline where the cold sea meets the countryside. Let’s get into it and see what this rare fragrance really has going on. Right from the opening you get a sharp hit of aquatic notes. There is seaweed and clary sage right away. It comes across like a clean classic aquatic at first but there is something cutting through it. I get a strong dose of that ozonic calone and also a slight boozy touch from the whiskey which makes it stand out more. It is definitely strong in the beginning. After about 30 minutes it starts to shift. The tobacco comes in but it is not smoky. It reminds me more of a rolled unlit cigar. It adds some depth and it actually works here. Around that point I also get some green notes like dewy crushed leaves. There might be a very light citrus in the background too something like mandarin but it is faint. It could just be a bit of bitterness from the calone but I feel like there is something there. As it dries down over the next few hours nothing dramatic really happens. It just smooths out and becomes less sharp. You are left with that classic masculine base of cedarwood patchouli vetiver and musk. It smells high quality and well put together. The guaiac wood gives it a slightly more mature feel too. I do like Blasted Heath and I like it a fair bit. To me it sits in the same space as Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme and other aquatics like that but the tobacco and slight booziness make it more interesting. It reminds me of a mix between Polo Deep Blue Parfum from Ralph Lauren and Every Storm a Serenade from Imaginary Authors. You get that big calone hit from Every Storm a Serenade and the cleaner more traditional marine drydown from Polo Deep Blue Parfum but with a bit of tobacco and whiskey added in. Blasted Heath is a special fragrance and it is unfortunate that it is so hard to find now because it is a really solid classy masculine aquatic with a unique windswept salty feel as long as you are not sensitive to calone. I have smelled a lot of fragrances in this style but none quite like this. It stands on its own for me. It just hits the spot and always will.

This is an aquatic lovers dream. But maybe a lucid weird dream. It's definitely a unique take on marine aquatics. Sea notes remind me of a niche version of cool water on the opening before changing. After the initial blast of the sea calms down, I pick up the whiskey and tobacco which is fleeting but surprisingly somehow works with this. Very herbal 🌿. Base patchouli, vetiver and musk. The musk used in this is absolutely wonderful and has a gentleman feel to it. More nuanced than other designer aquatics such as BLV or Davidoff. Slightly similar to sailing day but more aromatic and way stronger. Sillage is moderate, longevity is good. I got a compliment around 5 or 6 hours after applying which I honestly didn't expect lol. Based on reviews you would think this is challenging to wear but it's really not too bad IMO but, could be for some if you pick up rotten eggs (which I do not). Must like Calone to enjoy this. All and all I'm happy to have this unique frag in my collection and I use it regularly in warm or cold weather.

Blasted Heath has been blasted all the way to the seaside and into a big pile of seaweed and saltwater. This is an aquatic scent that many aquatic fragrances could have been... it actually smells like the cold sea around the British Isles and not just generic aquatic or slightly faint seaweed notes - I’m looking at you, Aqva range. However, this medley of Cool Water and Green Irish Tweed bundled into a cloth sack and drowned out at sea on a cold night is one of the few aquatic fragrances that would be suited to colder weather... if you wish to smell like you’re on a cold ship’s deck with salted rain lashing down - which may not be to everyone’s taste.

This is the only aquatic scent besides Sel Marin that didn't bore and cloy me to death. It absolutely has a familiar feel to it, but unlike Bvlgari Aqva, for instance, it doesn't feel "young", but more sophisticated. I get a LOT of seaweed, a lot of "Green" notes, and a good, long lasting vetiver scent that stays with me throughout the day. It's not complicated, and it's very conventional, but it's well done, and kind of charming, at least on my skin.

Interesting one, sometimes its a cold beach and sometimes it's Eau de Wet Dog in the opening. Dry down becomes more consistent and settles on a pleasant ozonic aquatic; A little beachy a little petrichor like scent and fits its name very well. I don't think I'd get a full bottle I'd probably buy Oud Minerale or Sel Marin if I want something that does this sort of scent but it's not bad and arguably better value than those.

I cannot find a single bottle of this for sale anywhere online in any country, and I've been passively looking for years. It's almost like it never existed. Bummer, because it's a really unique niche aquatic marine scent and I love the bottle presentation. Not worth spending ridiculous money based on my experience with it, but it's an interesting and rare item to have in a collection.

This scent is truly one of a kind. I never really smelt anything like it. The seaweed is the star of the show. The whiskey and tobacco scents are also experienced in abundance. An intimate sillage and a moderate longevity. I personally prefer in the Spring and Summer seasons and would mostly wear it as a day scent. A perfume good for all sexes. I would highly recommend this fragrance to anyone who doesn't mind standing out in a crowd.

I recently got the Penhaligon's sampler set from shoplondons, so last night decided to spray this one on before I went to bed. I just turned 61 so obviously the whole aquatic thing was not part of my formative years; still I am familiar with a few and find them inoffensive enough, if not particularly interesting. This one starts off as a fresh aquatic but with a certain sour note in the background that unfortunately only becomes more prominent with time. Perhaps that is the seaweed, but if it is, it is a seaweed that has gone off. In fact the best description that I have for that note is dog's breath - smelled a lot like dog's saliva. I wound up washing it off. Of course aquatics are not my thing so take this for what it is worth. I look forward to going through the other Penhaligon's samples since they promise to be in fragrance families that I like and am more familiar with.

HOLY MOTHER OF CALONE. If you're calone sensitive, you can skip this one. Got a sample with purchase-- it's almost entirely calone, salt notes, some vetiver. It has a Penhaligon's finesse, but man, I can't handle calone bombs like this. Reminds me of Kilian Boys Fischer's review below me might be the single most truthful review on this website.

I really don't care for marine or aquatic colognes and I REALLY dislike this one. It just stinks, and unfortunately, lasts and lasts.

This is perhaps the most difficult fragrance I've ever had to review. I know I've reviewed very few here but my statement refers to my decades of perfume interest. It's also really, really hard to decide whether to keep it, or not. I either love Blasted Heath, or it's just OK. There is no in-between, and I definitely don't dislike it as it's just so damn interesting. After using an entire 10mL decant and then wearing twice from a new bottle I purchased before Blasted Heath was discontinued I just don't know where I stand. The statements made by several of the reviewers below are true. I'll repeat just a few of those. The open, while brief, IS polarizing, but because of its brevity I don't believe one should make a decision to purchase (or not) solely on that. The seaweed (and overall salty-marine seaside presentation) is hyper-realistic and at least as accurate as any of the other well-known designer or niche offerings in this genre and I've tried every one mentioned below, and more. Blasted Heath changes as much as any perfume I've ever worn. It lasts an insanely long time, longer than I'd ever wish for a fragrance to endure. The guaiac wood and an atypical patchouli (that's pretty close to the vetiver type used here) are what I observe FAR more strongly than the voting indicates, and along with the clary sage challenge the combo of dewey "greens" and seaweed for overall dominance in my brain. The guaiac & clary sage are VERY strong after the open and mostly what I notice through the mid, then the patchouli/vetiver combo comes in getting heavier when the rest begin to fade. Once noticed, those grassy woods stay the dominant smell through the end, or at least MY end as I've never kept Blasted Heath on long enough to ever GET to its end! For the "Stronger-for-Longer" fragrance generation this should be on their test list when looking for a high-quality marine scent. Besides what I've mentioned ⤴ the other pyramid notes either make brief appearances for me or play supportive roles IF noticed at all. Some of those cameos (like when I sense the whiskey, or the tobacco) are part of a continual changing process noticed during the life of Blasted Heath. It's a trip. So why after all my time (years) spent with this perfume and everything I've mentioned having experienced do I still have a problem making a decision? I guess it has to do with Blasted Heath not being a easy fragrance to obtain even when it was in production and now it's discontinued. If I choose to not have it in my life and part with my bottle there's probably no turning back. It's that kind of perfume; like a hot looking boyfriend/girlfriend you absolutely have the time of your life with on most dates, but sometimes, some moments you just aren't sure if you'll always be together (or should be). Could more time lead to the answer (before they propose marriage!) or should you just appreciate what you have (had) and let be? THAT is my life with Blasted Heath. Perhaps I need to just keep a wee decant for old time's sake and finally let the bottle go to find its life partner? It's hot, and fun to be with, and won't have a hard time finding one. Yeah, that's the best answer.

I got tempted and bought a full bottle (blind buy) for a very good price. I must say that I kind of expected how it would smell. For many others this wouldn't be a safe blind buy, so be aware. Just as expected, Blasted Heath opens up with an overdose of Calone, Scentenal and probably some supporting aquatic molecules like Ozofleur and maybe some aldehydes. The note of clary sage (also gives a salty impression in low doses) is quite noticeable, making a dirty floral background. This opening is not for the regular joe, and might make you gag easily as molecules like Calone and Scentenal can also give a note of rotten eggs - imagine the smell of raw eggs crushed on canvas and dried. If you have smelled Bvlgari's Aqva/Amara, you'll get exactly the same note there (which many complain of) and in Blasted Heath that note is overdosed. To me I associate that smell more with the humid sea breeze that carries that dirty salty seaweed smell, but for someone with different association this would be choking. There's a bitter citrus note that is not listed too, which makes the scent mandarin-like fresh, but that is really not prominent. As opening marine overdose softens, then the fragrance becomes much better, balanced. But then again, this fragrance smells amazing right off the first spray "in air", and outside. You only get the challenging notes when smelling up close. As for other competitor "marine-only" scents, I think Blasted Heath is a very good choice, but not the easiest one to wear. Before making any decisions I suggest to try Reminiscence Rem, LO Salina, PR Acqua di Sale and CSP Aqua Motu, or with more aromatics, simply go for Bvlgari Aqva. Also, trademark Alberto Morillas scent. Aquatics mixed into aromatic notes, and though not listed, violet leaf is another key aspect adding up to the scent, eventually you'll remember bits from Acqua di Gio, Versace PH and so on. But of all, you could see the special touch that gives that niche-feeling to it, either a special quality of similar ingredients or the way it's blended, Blasted Heath really does smell special.

I have been waiting to test this after reading that it equates to standing on a Cornish shore and experiencing the fresh wind blow into your face, mixing the onshore spume of white horses crashing against the rocks and shingle... It does just that, it delivers exactly that fresh calone bittersweet salt note, the type of smell left in your nose after being tumbled in the water whilst surfing. However, there is a dupe, and I seriously mean an (almost) EXACT duplicate of this fragrance. It took me all of four hours to remember what this was as I patiently waited for the drydown to prove me wrong in my assumption**. 212 MEN SURF(limited edition[2014?])!! I mean, like: it freaked me out, because I still love what is left of my 212 SURF... I thought I had a fairly decent nose, but this would fool me and even the longevity is similar(EXCELLENT, by the way!)... so there you go... all in all I love this fragrance, how could I not when I love the other! *Update on longevity: Blasted Heath stayed on my skin through the night and was still going strong when I woke up the following(this)morning! A solid 16hrs plus, even after my shower. ** I had to directly compare the two... I don't think I can tell the difference between the two except maybe SURF is heavier on pepper? This could be a placebo effect simply as I know which sites on my body each is on...
