It was a blind buy after being stuck between this and castile....A nice addition to the collection of refined TRADITIONAL cologne lovers. I like Bayolea better (a bit more modern smelling) this is just not great...not bad either...just an upper average cologne...BTW..the bottle is just gorgeous... Smell: 7 out of 10 Projection 6 out of 10 Longevity 7 out of 10 (5-7 hours) Presentation 9 out of 10 versatility: 7 out of 10 Overall: like a 7 out of 10 Edit: After a couple of more wearings I have changed my opinion on this a bit....it is a very nice fragrance indeed...very manly...not so abbrasive like Sartorial which is a good thing....It immnediately came to my mind some resemblance to Acqua di parma colonia (original, intensa)...at the end I just discovered all were made by the same parfumeur....it is definitely SOMEHOW similar to those ones......they share the same DNA....if you like those one...you may indeed like this one as well....so...here is my final score... Smell: 8 out of 10 Projection 6 out of 10 Longevity 6 out of 10 (4-7 hours) but after the first 2-3 hours it gets really close to the skin Presentation 9 out of 10 versatility: 7 out of 10 Overall: like a 8 out of 10 A great fragrance for the classic cologne lovers...very well done!!!!

Esprit du Roi was an impulse buy when I was at the Penhaligon's store looking for a gift. This is the closest I've found to a modern yet "traditional" EDC, but at the same time it isn't overbearing (as Sartorial and Opus 1870 can be, in my opinion). The open is a burst of citrus, blended with mint, raspberry, tomato leaf and geranium. The latter notes sustain into the drydown, after the aldehydes, vetiver and oak moss kick in. There's also a hint of musk in the drydown. The tomato leaf makes this a rather tart and astringent fragrance, but it works very well in my opinion. To me, this definitely isn't a citrus aromatic. The citrus lasts for maybe a minute, before you get the divine florals and oakmoss-musk base. It's more in chypre territory, to be honest, so don't expect too much citrus. While this is a very complex fragrance, it's extremely versatile. I think you could wear this anytime of the day for any season. I personally like wearing it to the office. It's subtle enough that you don't raise too many eyebrows, but at the same time unique. Longevity is good, I get over 6 hours on my skin with moderate sillage.

Very pleased to have this scent in my collection. Penhaligon's have given a new school twist on an old school style scent which works sublimely well. It's a fresh clean and classy scent with a fantastic rich musky drydown. I can imagine this scent working well in any situation, any time of year, day or night. Reminds me of a spicier version of Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa. Longevity is 4-5 hours on my skin. Highly Recommended.... 8/10

Three solid sprays on my arm, night time in spring: wow, what a beauty. One of my best fragrances. I recommend this.

Esprit du Roi is my latest acquisition from Penhaligon’s just off New Bond Street in London this Xmas and it will make a lovely springtime/early summer alternative to Penhaligon’s Douro. EdR opens up with a very smooth and sophisticated burst of citrus greenery - aromatic and clean like a fresh-bloomed April garden with fantastic tomato leaf that dominates but is tempered by soft raspberry and mint notes for a wonderful hour or so, on my skin.... After this, Esprit du Roi - admittedly in cold weather - ages into a very warm and almost peppery cloves skin scent that remains complex and rich for another few hours. I can understand comparisons to Acqua di Parma’s Colonia Intensa but EdR has a far superior and more interesting opening. My girlfriend, who is very difficult to please fragrance-wise, loved the sample application before immediately saying I should get a full bottle.

I don't know if it's my nose meter but I don't smell as much citrus notes as those who can but I'm able to pick up some lavender? When I first spray this fragrance on my skin I get a real attractive barbershop aroma with. .. a clean aroma of floral scent with a hint of lavender, musk and sandalwood giving it a deep masculine herbal aromatic scent. If I didn't know better I would swear that lavender is part of this fragrance's make-up. Longevity and Silage is moderate overall. Finally, This fragrance is "THE" barbershop aromatic scent with a powdery vib. Penhaligon has produced real attractive masculine fragrance's...real gentlemen's fragrance..not your typical youthful aroma. 8/10...an all year round fragrance. Give this frag a try...you might enjoy this fragrance.

The note breakdown seems quite busy compared to how this one smells in real life. Its fresh citrus with some aldehyde to start with, and smells a bit woody and spicy afterwards. The drydown is musky, very similar to many other perfumes that seem to be using the same ingredient or make of this particular musk. I liked my bottle but not so much to keep it. I ended up selling it as it didn't really add anything to what I already have or look for.

Classy traditional men's Cologne but goes to skin scent far too quickly. I prefer the equally classy and traditional Douro, which seems to have a more lasting (as well as Interesting) profile

I adore this scent, I can spray it on my pulse points and it last whole day for me.

So this is listed as for men, but I'm a lady who tried it in the shop and I absolutely loved it. Top notes are very herbal and aromatic - tomato leaf, mint, artemisia, cloves, cardamom and aldehydes prominent on a lemon and citrus base. It's refreshing in a fresh herb garden way, but the very light sweetness of the jasmine and honeysuckle keep it away from salad territory. The herbs persist as the floral heart further unfolds, the citrus calms while cloves grow stronger, and all are joined by ambergris, oakmoss, and cedar as the drydown does its stuff. I don't smell any raspberry. Although it fits the overall profile of a 1970s aromatic cologne/chypre, I disagree that it's dated - the tomato leaf scent with mint is interesting and crisper, less dusty and muted than the vintage stuff I've tried in that category. It's just not a boring modern aquatic or woodsy fougere. I would say it's an old fashioned profile done in a modern way. Longevity and sillage are medium. I would love this on a man, but then I hate boring Axe/Lynx body spray style scents - this is the scent of a sophisticated man, maybe a tad bohemian. A gentleman with taste. On me, it's fresh and especially nice on a hot summer day or in fall with jeans and a tweed blazer. I think it's discontinued now, which is sad.

This is a classic aromatic spicy fresh scent. Nothing unique, there are millions of old school perfumes like this one, dont pay Penhaligon price for such a weak and 'boring' scent.

Very good scent, but Esprit du Roi smells a tiny bit too old-fashion for me. I can picture my grandfather wearing this rather than me (I'm 25). Quality is very good, smells classy and clean. Not a shocker but special in its own smooth way. I wish the few old-fashion notes here would be removed (can't tell which, might be the oakmoss, cedrat or tomato leaf?), because otherwise this scent would've had big potential in becoming my new signature scent: the opening is beautiful!

I love this scent. It was my first Penhaligon ́s purchase and totally blind-buy, since there is no store in Prague, where you could try Penhaligon ́s scents. It wasn ́t love at first sniff but now I absolutely adore the smell. I wear this fragrance very often in Spring/Autumn, especially when it ́s rainy outside. I prefere it as a work scent, because it has a clean, green and slightly woody aroma that in my opinion suits best for a professional environment. It ́s not sexy, it ́s just beautifully clean. What I mainly notice is mint, citrus, tomato leaf and aldehydes. The scent last about 6 hours and projects pretty well. Give it a try!

I thought I'd try some new perfumes, and stopped in at Penhaligon's yesterday. I've used Quercus in the past and love it - and also it seems to last quite well on me. But I have to agree with Papi that this one, although a lovely scent, doesn't really seem to last well at all.

This has a really great natural smelling tomato leaf note, with some mint and eucalyptus as well. Unfortunately it doesn't last long, so it's a pass from me. Nothing much more to be said really. 3.5/5

For me it is the best fresh frag different then others I used. Highly recommended it.

Awesome smell but does it fades away so quickly on you as well ???
