Legacy of Petra

Persolaise whom I like and respect very much termed this the very catchy name "Christmas in Morocco" which actually sounded very nice, and in light of his review and against my general judgement of my hatred of Anise. This arrives for me this week, as was purchased as part of Penhaligon's summer sale, so I will update with a review on this. Till now, I have to say I have very high hopes, and I hope they are not dashed....... Bottle received and worn for a few hours. I have to say, this is extremely clever perfumery! The liquorice here is so so so realistic, like the extremely expensive liquorice you would find in a high end sweet shop, it is so realistic I want to bite my arm off where I spritzed the test. I think this is as most people have said, right off the bat liquorice forward, and dominating the fragrance with hints of other notes, it's extremely monolithic and linear, but very vey nice indeed. That being said, this is not a fragrance that I'd want people to smell on me. I feel like I might have fallen out of a liquorice and sweets factory! This is one of those fragrances that you put on to enjoy yourself, I put this straight up in a gourmand genre, but not as sweet as most gourmands, but it's very very nice, and I am not a fan of liquorice in general, and I despise Anise. Anyone that is worried that this might smell of cheap liquorice or Anise or 5 spice, rest at ease, it's nowhere near that arena at all. I have had about 20 bottles from Penhaligon's and never ever disliked any of their frags, not one. Obviously , I liked some more than others, and they offer a money back guarantee if you dislike any of their frags, hence the risk. I do not know if I will return it or not, I will feel sad if I do, but at the same time, I can't fathom wearing this more than a handful of times a year, and possibly around festive seasons, so do I keep this, or return it in favour for one I have never smelled like Halfeti Cedar or Leather? I do not know :/ I hope this might have benefited, someone, anyone :) So enjoy and God bless!

I bought a sample and it spoke to me immediately, so I bought a full bottle- and then the weather got cool and foggy (I live on the coast in Southern California). Well, everyone was saying this is a cozy fall scent, so I wore it. In cool weather, it's unpleasantly overpowering; the licorice is too abrasive, the myrrh and wood notes burn my nose, and the spice makes me nauseous. Today, it's hot and very dry. And oh. OH. This is perfect weather for this fragrance. It's rich, dry (almost dusty), sensuous, and that herbal quality from the fennel/bergamot/rosemary makes it smell like a hot, arid wind that just blew through a canyon full of fragrant desert vegetation. It has the slightest hint of molasses-thick, dark sweetness on its own, so I paired it with a simple fragrance with date notes and I'm in heaven. I can't believe I ever tried to wear tropical sunscreen/fruity floral scents in hot weather; they never made me happy like this makes me happy. I know Penhaligon's is a London house, but this truly opened the door to Middle Eastern fragrances for me. I'm fantasizing about taking a trip to Palm Springs just as an excuse to wear this for several days straight. I've recently expanded my fragrance wardrobe as I grew to understand my tastes, and I'm so pleased I took the plunge on a full bottle of this. I normally dislike heat, and now I can look forward to it- because I'll smell like Legacy of Petra.

*Sighs with satisfaction* Are there any other pairings in the world of fragrance more beautifully exotic and mystical than licorice root/anise and myrrh? This is one of my most favorite licorice/myrrh fragrances. Legacy of Petra begins with the scent of sticky, sugary dates, earthy anise-like fennel, and LICORICE ROOT — not candied, here it is gloriously natural, medicinal (aromatic) and bold. YAY!!! Love love LOVE that anethole!!💚💚💚 Incense smoke and myrrh swirl up and blend tenaciously with fresh, grassy tea leaves and subtle creosote. It’s here where I begin to smell something especially wonderful—a note like sun baked earth that reminds me of hot desert sand, or the smell of molten glass in a glass blower’s furnace. I know, I know, too hyperbolic, but... *shrugs* It’s how I perceive it! The dry down is delicately sweet and herbal, underscored with the powdery mineral smell I associate with desert caves in the American high mountain deserts. This is the mystical journey Legacy takes me on for about 4-5 hours, only leaving me after 6 with a soft, sweetly scented sigh.

For my fellow lovers of Legacy— Do not despair. I did some research and hallelujah, Legacy of Petra is not discontinued. At least, NOT YET. Penhaligon’s currently still produces it, however the USA website no longer carries it. I couldn’t find out why, but with anethole (substance responsible for that black licorice scent) being a very polarizing scent in perfume, the American faction may not have been selling enough of Legacy to warrant keeping it in constant stock. It ALWAYS comes down to money, doesn’t it? 😒 Was told by a Penhaligon’s customer service rep that Legacy is still available for purchase directly through Penhaligon’s. If you’re like me, I’ll put back the coin and pay the full Penhaligon’s price because I love it just. that. much. But, understanding times are trying, if you’re looking to buy this discounted, there’s still plenty of this deliciously witchy and wonderful myrrh/licorice potion out there on discount websites, and will be for quite some time to come. Relax, rejoice, and happy sniffing!🧡

Legacy of Petra (now discontinued) was a massively underrated juice from Penhaligons. Probably the most misunderstood fragrance in the Trade Routes collection. It certainly has its occasions where it shines, and I think getting that right unlocks the magic of the fragrance. I worked in law enforcement (most shifts were in the jail) and the scent became underwhelming. But now I’m a supervisor at a residential therapy campus, which has me working inside and outside, and it’s neither understated nor over. It lasts 8-10 hours. Interestingly, anyone close to you will pick up the licorice and fennel, but the Vanilla, Olinanum, and myrrh project out a few feet. With the way people misunderstood this fragrance, I understand why they discontinued (from a business standpoint). However, I wish they would’ve kept it in the Trade Routes collection (same with Constantinople).

I really like this. The first time I tested it I was thinking that it wasn't for me, but upon wearing it again I really enjoyed it. I find it very dangerous that every Penhaglion's scent I seem to sample has me tempted terribly into wanting a big bottle. There's something kind of fruity (blueberry-like?) to the initial spray of it before it dried down into a cozy licorice tea scent. It's just the right amount of sweet without being cloying, and it's a really nice balance of resinous/warm and fresh and clean. It kind of fades over wear time into a soft fuzzy blanket kind of smell, warm and vanilla but with that edge of clean laundry fresh from the dryer. The licorice and fennel are pretty heavy players in this. Being an indie perfume oil enjoyer, this reminds me very much of Nocturne Alchemy's Egyptian Licorice Tea with better longevity and a bit more depth.

Wearing this today as the weather has turned cold, rainy and crap her in Yorkshire, England! I'm coming off the back end of a bad cold, but this opens with a very bold, sweet liquorice backed up with an aromatic warmth. I'd struggle to pinpoint specific aromatic qualities ( Tea, Rosemary ) but they're tucked in there. A toffee vanilla starts rounding out the mid-base to keeping the gourmand-ish sweet vibe going. Despite the liquorice note, this has big' By The Fireplace by Maison Margiella' vibes. I really like this. very much, and it's a shame this is being discontinued by all accounts. Then again, at Penhaligon's latest price points, and depending on discount websites, you could get 2 bottles of By the Fireplace for the price of this one! Initial projection is quite big, but settles to a reasonable personal bubble that lasts for a good 6-8 hours.

Picked this up for a measly £100 in the summer sale and frankly, I would've paid more. If you ever wonder how Penhaligon's has been around for so long, it's because they put out bangers like this. On the first spray it's a big kick of green tea, fennel, spice, and resiny sweetness. It's hot and fresh. As it simmers down, the fresher anise element becomes smoother and the myrrh really starts to shine. It smells like a really classy root beer at this point, still with lots of sweetness. There is a faintly detectable woody note. This myrrh is a powerhouse, but despite all the resin, it still smells clean. I'm honestly a bit lightheaded from how much I've been smelling it. So good, will likely become my signature for winter.

This is quite a complex beast but hot damn I am loving it's versatility. Opening with raw liquorice - specifically the kind you could buy by the root at the health food store and chew on. It's got a lot of sweetness too that feels slightly at odds with the fennel and tea vibes but is in fact accurate because liquorice itself is sweeter than sugar (apparently)! The myrrh is a perfect match and it gets spicier the longer I wear it. Even now, around 9 hours after spraying, I'm getting incense and cinnamon and benzoin in an almost Catholic way. I did hear it was being discontinued which I hope isn't true so soon into my love affair. But if it does happen, I will be moved to write an epic poem in it's honour.

This is a very contemplative unique bitter green match, licorice, herbal vanilla that lies quite close to the skin and is very introverted. It's a bit tannic and dry in the beginning like powdered matchaon top of a drink. The apricot is a tartish round note only in the very beginning, then the matcha is king along with licorice or fennel and gentle round vanilla as it warms up. Very nice for us matcha lovers that don't like fig or too sweet notes ruining the composition. But it doesn't really project as much as some might want. It's fine with me. It evolves very slowly on my cold dry skin but will bloom faster on hotter skin. A rare unique one from this line.

Sprayed one spray on back of hand before bed and it’s still strong smelling in morning. Because I fell asleep before truly smelling all the notes I will say that my general impression is it’s an unusual syrupy ambery balsamic benzoin vanilla with a pronounced lingering bitter herbal green tea almost matcha not wet or transparent tea but heavier and dryer it’s very nice addition with fennel and licorice it’s more unique and stands out from myriad of Ambers. The bergamot did feature earlier giving a slight fruit accord that came through kind of apricot like. Very nice thick and close to the skin with only one spray and long lasting. Glad to have it.

The rocks and the desert have protected it for centuries, like a precious treasure: and indeed Petra is undoubtedly the greatest treasure in all of Giordania, a stone jewel famous all over the world, a marvel of nature and history human, which leaves you breathless. As this fragrance did for me : a luxurious licorice , elegant and discreet , accompanied by myrrh and amber notes . It is exceptional , I hardly remain speechless but this is truly a composition that deserves , that I would like and that was love at first sight . I won't mention paintings, Petra itself is for me, but try this creation which is truly remarkable.

Incredibly gorgeous. The initial opening is a bit too spicy and almost hurts to smell up close, but that lasts for maybe 10 seconds, to which afterward you get an earthy, semi-sweet, slightly smokey and resinous cup of hot tea. The drydown is lovely, and gives me similarities (in vibe, not scent) to Angels' Share Paradis' oak smell, without the sweetness and booziness. In my opinion, it perfectly encapsulates a White Christmas evening, absolutely love. 9/10, docked a point because of the harsh opening, otherwise, it's perfect. If you're a fan of Angels' Share Paradis or Grand Soir, this should be right up your alley.

It is an incredible perfume. It is said, it is rumored and it is said that it will be discontinued soon. I don't think so since it's really a perfume beauty!! Its duration on the skin perfectly exceeds 12 hours, and the incense note it gives off is truly sublime!! This perfume could be launched in an Amouage bottle and everyone would agree that it is a masterpiece worthy of the Omani firm's classics. I have acquired several of the latest Penhaligon's releases after a lapse of several years and I must say that all of them have had a better sillage and duration than what we were used to, good for Penhaligon's!!!

This is Halfeti's overlooked sister. Halfeti is loud, attractive but not particularly clever. Legacy of Petra is the dark horse. She's extremely clever, well put together and a deviant in the bedroom. It's the liquorice that does it for me. The opening notes are spice and amber but this fragrance develops so wonderfully into vanilla and aromatics until its turns into a liquorice dry down. Just wonderful. Good longevity. Ignore Helfeti, she's too brash. Go for Petra.

I must admit this is a difficult fragrance. I myself love this fragrance, however I know multiple people who do not at all. The licorice notes are very prominent, which I adore, but can be too much for some people. I would highly recommend trying it out just to decide for yourself. The performance is above average, given I got it on a Penhaligons sale for basically half price, I consider it a good deal, otherwise I would not have bought it for the full price.

This perfume is thick (in a good sense), warming and absolutely beautiful. Cosy and slightly boozy aromatic notes on top: anis, rosemary and cardamom (?). Viscous “rum and raisins” scent comes right after (this is probably a tea note, but this tea was definitely soaked in some rum :). It all mixed perfectly with stunning vanilla and smoky benzoins. This perfume really differs from person to person. On me, it's vanilla and a hint of myrrh and bergamot--resin-y and rich. I barely smell the aniseed/licorice/fennel notes. On my friend, it's a licorice BOMB. Like she rolled around in salt and black licorice. Personally, I love it on me, but I would definitely try it before committing to the whole bottle!

Stopped in to Penhaligons Edinburgh yesterday and fell in love with Petra. I know I’m supposed to pick up licorice but my nose gets peach. It’s a beautiful Peach Amber fragrance and the longevity is pretty good. I like Arthur (recently added to collection) but his longevity isn’t the best. Petra has much more staying power. My new Winter favorite.

If anyone has a bottle of this, I'd be willing to buy it off you. Message me!! I don't smell the pure licorice some people are mentioning - its a licorice base with the spice of myrrh and green tea plus a slight hint of menthol (?) overlaying it. Along the same dark character lines of TF Black orchid but warmer and spicier. Amazing!

Wearing my sample of this now, im suprised at how much I like it, sticky, heavy sweet and resinous. I definately pick up the liquorice note but its not overpowering, id say it was more suited to cooler weather. It does remind me of angels share but with liquorice, Ill be picking up a full bottle for sure

Enchanting. Petra is the perfect spicy, sweet, woody-vanilla fragrance. The liquorice and fennel seeds notes really reminds of a Jordanian spice market. The drydown of this is similar to Maison Lancome Oud Ambroisie. Longevituly is great and projection moderate. The bottle looks amazing too. 10/10

This is the most enchanting combination of tea and amber. Legacy of Petra is pure magic. This fragrance is both comforting and complex. The combination of licorice, fennel, myrrh, incense, and green tea is sleek and exotic. Perfectly unisex. This is a fragrance I truly can't imagine being without.

A unique and complex scent that instantly transports one to an ancient city filled with date trees and incense. The notes on my skin that I enjoy the most are rich amber, dried fruits such as dates and figs, frankincense and just a rich lush warmth. This is my favorite fragrance of all time.

I bought a sample of this and was not disappointed, going on to buy the full size. The scent comes in heavy with liquorice which I was surprised to find I loved, and then throughout the day it dries down to a more subtle fennel/vanilla combo. Really gorgeous, and lasted most of the day.

This fragrance is a glorious blend for me. It's spicy and warm, substantial, but not overpowering. It calls to mind the sensation of being at the opera, and the heady swirling intoxication of the many luxurious fragrances worn by the ladies all around me. Glorious. This is love for me.

Oh my! What is this that I have lain my nose on? Swoon! Swoon! Swoon! I fear that I have been smitten with this most regal and exquisite of fragrances. This spiciness. This richness. This most joyous olfactory delight! Is this what a nosegasm feels like? This is quite lovely indeed.

I have been searching for a delicious licorice scent and so glad to have discovered this. At first it reminds me of raisins, and later dries down to gorgeous licorice fennel which that won't budge. Funny that I'm not a fan of licorice/anise/fennel/rosemary in food.

My favorite perfume of all time....when I heard this was being discontinued I panic bought two (RIP wallet). If anyone wants a 100ml, unopened, shipped from the US, message me - can send lot # + pics etc.

The fucking licorice + tea has me in love at first sniff

Legacy of Petra is... almost exactly what I wanted out of a fragrance named after Petra. It opens up with this herbal, medicinal tea, fennel, and LICORICE. These three blend to give rise to an interesting note that is similar to black tea, but without any of the bitterness. A tea that has the body of an aromatic black tea, but the lack of bitterness one would expect in a green tea. This note sticks around for the full duration, starting off strong and medicinal, taking a back seat during the middle of the fragrances lifetime, and then coming back forward in the drydown. As the fragrance dries down, the licorice starts to take over. I found myself wondering why they bothered making the licorice so strong. Licorice isn't what I think of at all when I think of my time in Jordan. Don't get me wrong, I love licorice. But not enough to smell like it for hours on end. And this phase does last for roughly 2-3 hours in my experience. Eventually as the fragrance continues to dry down, the licorice starts to ease off and the Myrrh is allowed to come forward. The late drydown is this GORGEOUS aromatic amber. A golden, slightly syrupy, date-like amber. It's a slightly sweet resin, sweetened and spiced by the licorice/vanilla and the touch of rosemary. The fragrance no longer smells like licorice specifically, instead the licorice blends with the myrrh and it smells more syrupy. The blend also brings back the aforementioned tea note, but this time the tea has had time to settle and as a result is less sharp and more warm. This persists for quite a while, about 6-8 hours but as an extreme skin scent. I get almost no projection by the time the licorice has been dialed back. If I can describe what this dry down reminds me of, it takes me back to my time in Jordan the day after my family and I took a trip to Petra. We were nearby in Wadi Rum. It was sunset and we were staying in a Bedouin camp. The Bedouin put on a performance for us and offered us tea while we watched, seated on the sand that was just warmed by the desert sun. I was sipping on tea and munching on some sticky dates that my aunt had packed with her. This is unbelievably nostalgic... but I hate those 2-3 hours where the licorice takes the center stage. I'll need to continue thinking on whether or not I want to spend the money for the dry down. If you like licorice a bit more than I do then this is an unbelieveably easy YES. Otherwise... definitely sample first.

Questo profumo è un vero e proprio viaggio aromatico che ti trasporta nel cuore di Petra, con le sue note calde e avvolgenti che evocano l’atmosfera mistica e antica della città. La liquirizia è la protagonista assoluta, donando un tocco di dolcezza speziata che si fonde perfettamente con la mirra e le note ambrate. L’apertura con il finocchio e il bergamotto è sorprendentemente fresca, ma si evolve rapidamente in un cuore ricco e profondo, dove le resine e la mirra creano un effetto quasi ipnotico. Okay, Petra is a good perfume, let's get that out of the way. It's really not very trendy to make a populist myrrh perfume (well it's becoming a bit more trendy) many perfumes with myrrh in the title often don't overtly smell of myrrh, at least not mainstream Penhaligons types shit. Anyway this is a sticky myrrh biased amber with hefty woody tones and lots of discrete sweetness. Let's talk about the opening because that has the most overt, almost fruity and date like, caramelised, smell, I really love it and coupled with the most overt licorice which lasts throughout the entire perfume, I couldn't help but be wooed, in the initial phases at least. There's a bit of a downside here, clearly if you don't like licorice or anything verging on that, you're not going to dig this perfume or care about any other facets it might have, because it will plain put you off. Even me, someone who loves it, and thought licorice needed to be featured more in perfume at one time, could (and did) feel a bit fatigued by this because it is quite a heavy wear, and Licorice is somewhat of a recent trend in perfumery and I've definitely smelled it coupled with strong amber accords like this one before. (There's an Armani Prive one which is actually more subtle than Petra) However, I have to return to the fact that this is a really lovely, well made perfume, without any of the screechy, jarring BS of Halfeti or anything like that. Funny that tea is mentioned this does have some odd tea like quality, sandwiched somewhere between the resinous, tacky (texturally) myrrh and the dry, rooty, woody aromas, also the anisic quality of fennel (which I don't really get if I'm honest) IS actually a key component to creating that licorice feel. I'm onboard, I wouldn't buy it myself just because it didn't speak to me as loudly as I like, but I wouldn't blame anyone for being into it.

Legacy of Petra feels like two currents running side by side: licorice and resins, moving together from start to finish. The first current is unmistakably licorice. If you don’t enjoy that anisic profile, this won’t be for you — it defines the fragrance. It opens with a sharp fennel note that seamlessly melts into the licorice, the two sharing that same aromatic bite. There’s also a subtle tea-like nuance in the background, adding a gentle lift and keeping things from becoming too dense. The licorice stays present all the way through. The second current is resinous. Myrrh takes the lead, supported by olibanum, with benzoin joining later in the drydown. Together they create a smooth, syrupy amber warmth. The resins don’t smell lit or smoky; there’s no real incense feel here. Instead, the opening carries a soft boozy, almost date-like sweetness — slightly caramelized, rich, and inviting. Despite all this richness, it never tips fully into gourmand territory. It stays firmly in the oriental, resinous realm, making it more wearable than you might expect. Performance is solid: strong projection in the first couple of hours, then closer to the skin. Unisex. At its core, this is a myrrh and sweet licorice scent — warm, exotic, and a little hypnotic.

I was a bit worried about the dominant licorice and myrrh voted by others but it's not dominant to my nose. To me this is an ambre sultan style, herbal amber, with lots and lots of deep almost masculine resins and subtle herbal nuances. Really nice and ambery, the herbs are failry quiet but present - not really distinct but give it a soft masculine greenness. I think it's a great one from penhaligon's and not too sweet like some of the others they have made in the last years. Not like angel's share to me I would say closest is Ambre Sultan but with different herbs. Starlight is much more warm / cardamom focussed I would not say it is similar. A little shisha bar esque to me also for some reason, there is a deep wood or soft tobacco to it. Big like! ** So much tea in here makes it so yummy. Onto my best of ambers! The opening is strongly reminiscent of Chinese medicine halls. Sometimes like bak kut teh, and then drying down to like hard Chinese herbal candy for me. I can see why Westerners would find this exotic, luxurious and all that, and would enjoy wearing it. It's a smell that I'm fond of too, due to childhood memories, but it's not something most in Asia would want to wear out, including me. The heat and humidity would make it unsuitable too. I found projection to be poor. Sweetness also makes it lean feminine, imho, unless you want to smell like a middle aged Chinese physician. Spraying it sometimes to enjoy it in the quiet comfort of my home. Edit: Curry powder opening, then giving way to sweet resinous scent, licorice, with the spicy aroma faintly in the background always, and finally, quite a beautiful dry down after hours. I continue to wear this to enjoy quietly - usually at home.

I don’t normally like liquorice smells, and to me or on my skin the anise note isn’t that noticeable. However: wearing it transports me back to a family holiday in Tenerife when I was 18. My best friend had spilled a bottle of sambuca in our fridge on the first day. We drenched ourselves in sunscreen and perfume (for me at the time this was actually Breath of God which is still a favourite), drank supremely strong piña coladas with “local mix”. It was so hot you could smell the sunshine. This reminds me of that holiday. It’s like what Impulse spray thinks it smells like.

Loving this. For me it's straight licorice for the first 3-4 hours and then the olibanum starts to shine through and a bit of vanilla. It's a great scent that's almost gourmand but never quite getting there; in fact a coworker told me I smell soapy but warm and asked the name of my perfume so he could get it himself. Lasting power +12h, sillage rather strong for the first couple of hours, moderate later. It does share a certain similarity with Mechant Loup which I used to own, but this one is warmer and less cloying IMO.

The opening is heavy on the licorice - I instantly was remind of licorice confit sweets that my mum used to eat when I was a kid. Next I get a muddy green tea, and bergamot, then it turns into an almost sweet yet pungent tobacco, with vanilla. I like it, but I don’t love it. After a couple of hours, it reminds me a little bit of Alien Eau Extraordinaire (!!) Maybe it’s the tea... Anyway, performance is disappointing. After 3 hours, it’s all but gone. A vanilla trace left behind, and not much more. Sad times!

Da amante del finocchio non poteva che non piacermi. Testandolo mi ha riportato alle tisane al finocchio nella stagione autunnale/invernale che spesso accompagnano le mie serate a casa. estremamente rilassante. In asciugatura subentra gradualmente la liquirizia che in genere non gradisco tanto, ma devo dire che essendo addolcita dalla vaniglia non stona in questo profumo. Caldo e avvolgente. Chissà magari un giorno lo comprerò ;)

While my nose typically associates it with accidentally biting into whole stars put into my mom's curry, I adore the (unlisted) anise note in Petra! It's not the sharp, overwhelming "oh god why" of a surprise star being crunched between the teeth. Instead, it's like a soft trim on the edges of a sweet blanket of amber and vanilla. It reminds me of a middle eastern dessert, but any specific ones are slipping my mind at the moment

It wears very thin to my nose. Sweet licorice front and center, still very light scent. I was expecting more myrrh and olibanum, more density, more oomph. Its like a good quality licorice candy with a dab of rosemary. Not sure if I got a bad batch, but this is so light to me, after a few mins I keep looking for it. Spring and autumn scent, not strong enough for winter. Unisex leaning feminine.

Green, slightly sharp hit of ultra-realistic anise, before melting into a resinous swirl of licorice and vanilla. Flirts with gourmand territory early on, then shifts into something more medicinal and herbal, like licorice but with attitude. Get's some mileage before pulling close. Wasn’t sure I wanted to smell like snack. Still not entirely convinced, but it's interesting.

This is a step in the right direction for the brand. The liquorice is front and centre for me, and is the star of the show. I do get traces of fennel and tea, but the backbone is highlighted with a woody aroma. It's quite different from the rest of the offerings in the line. The myrrh and resins really do work well with the liquorice. 8/10
