It opens with that cool metallic lift of steam and pressed cloth, a touch of lavender, a glint of aldehydes, all arranged with the discipline of a tailor’s workshop. In a world where many scents flatten themselves into the same ambroxan haze—driftwood dipped in honey, polished with caramel sweetness, designed to shout their presence—this one refuses that path. It comes from another era, when tension and structure were virtues, and when a fragrance was constructed with real top, middle, and base distinctions rather than blended into a single, sugary blur. As it moves forward, the middle begins to reveal its architecture. There is a sharp barbershop edge made modern through metal, thread, and beeswax, never nostalgic, never soft. Leather chairs appear in the corners. The sweetness is tempered, pressed firm, like cloth drawn tight under heat. Each movement feels intentional—almost like the internal scaffolding of a bespoke suit. This is complexity without volume, intelligence without projection. The base settles with dry woods and a faint hum of wax, cedar standing straight, vetiver clean and bitter, the whole composition becoming calmer, more deliberate. Layering truly exists here; nothing collapses into a single tone. Instead, the scent narrows into something quietly elegant—close to the body, shaped for work, conversation, and thought. Paired with a single spray of Molecules 01 (with Iso E Super) on the back of the neck, it forms a soft halo around the structure, smoothing the edges without blurring the design. The combination creates a kind of atmosphere rather than a trail—subtle, modern in restraint, yet deeply rooted in the old craft of tension, perspective, and order. A good, old-fashioned scent—complex, layered, and built for those who value depth over declaration.

Unfortunately yeah its true, Sartorial is being discontinued and replaced with The Cut. The woman at the house's NYC store explained to me that the formula was difficult to manufacture so the decision was made to substitute it with a more unisex friendly fougère that was easier to manufacture. As such this is a eulogy as much as a review. Update: Yeah looks like I was bamboozled. Its back just with a different label now, apparently its lost the royal warrant too it seems. Not gonna delete anything but i will own up to it. Sartorial was released in the fall of 2010, not long after Aventus first launched. When Penhaligons had Bertrand Duchaufour begin working on a new barbershop fougère, they wanted something quintessentially British and suave. The end result was an eau de toilette that for 15 years was considered one of the finest exemplars of a fougère alongside titans such as Beau de Jour, Mefisto Gentiluomo, and Le 3e Homme. For many the freshly steam pressed and beeswax notes inspired by the tailor shops of London's Savile Row evoke debonair sophistication and confidence to the point that as one person here noted, "if Sartorial was around when Ian Fleming was alive, he would have made it Jame's Bonds signature". Others have made comparisons to figures such as Don Draper, various C-Suite executives in their lives, and many a father figure. In terms of sillage, Sartorial was always stronger than many of the other Penhaligon's scents projecting a moderate distance for a few hours before becoming a borderline skin scent lasting somewhere between 4-8 hours depending on weather and skin chemistry; clothes lasting even longer. The one distinction never really discussed however was bottle differences with many of the later batches lacking the second royal warrant after Prince Phillip passed away in 2021. Overall 9.2/10, Grab a bottle if you can and for those that have one, cherish it.

Fragrance Review: Penhaligon’s Sartorial For me, Sartorial by Penhaligon’s is more than just a fragrance—it is a masterpiece I’ve been returning to for over a decade. First launched in 2010 and crafted by Bertrand Duchaufour, this aromatic fougère has become a cornerstone of my collection. I am now on my fourth bottle, and I consider it a true staple for any gentleman’s wardrobe. Inspired by the bespoke tailoring workshops of Savile Row, Sartorial mirrors the artistry of a perfectly tailored suit. The opening sparkles with metallic and aldehydic notes, sharpened by cardamom, black pepper, ginger, and violet leaf. These crisp, modern touches give way to a heart of lavender, beeswax, leather, and linden blossom—warm, textured, and evocative of fine cloth and polished wood. The base is both smooth and complex, with oakmoss, honey, tonka bean, amber, and resins weaving together in an enduring dry-down. The result is refined yet full of character, as though each note has been stitched into place with precision. There has been some confusion around its availability due to rebranding, but I can confirm from my own side-by-side comparison that the new packaging houses the exact same fragrance. Sartorial has not been discontinued. The recently launched The Cut is a new fragrance entirely—not a replacement. In the wider world of fougères, I often compare Sartorial with Mousse Illuminee by Rogue Perfumery. Both are exceptional, but where Mousse Illuminee emphasizes oakmoss in a bold, vintage style, Sartorial feels smoother, with beeswax, lavender, and leather providing its distinctive elegance. Revisiting Sartorial feels like rediscovering a childhood treasure—familiar, timeless, and endlessly captivating. It is the kind of fragrance I never tire of, one that continues to impress with its craftsmanship and beauty. For me, it represents the pinnacle of modern fougère perfumery.

Firstly, I'll admit upfront that I do like Penhaligons fragrance in general. I find them elegant and steeped in tradition. This being said, I find the brand a mixture of truly great fragrance but often underperforming across the board. This is pretty much my view of Sartorial in a nutshell but I'll provide a little more detail. It's right in there amongst the best scents of all in my book. It's modern and traditional, clean and impeccable with a captivating mixture of lavender, beeswax-honey and leather amongst many other beautiful notes, especially that steam note that Penhaligons seem to utilise better than any other brand. When I wear this fragrance I feel a shift in my physical and mental attributes. I suddenly feel alert, upright and ready to handle what's to come in the day ahead. It's transformative as a good fragrance should be perhaps! I feel as though I want to put on a fine pin stripe suit and a beautifully made pair of Oxfords, even if I'm just going out to the shops. 😆. Not always appropriate. Nether the less, it certainly makes me smarten my casual attire a little! What you get is a couple of good hours of performance with moderate projection and sillage. Unfortunately, the scent becomes a little more intimate after that time and the elegant, freshness mostly fades to an intimate level. Strangely, the skin stays beautifully scented for many hours if you are prepared to walk around with your face buried in your elbow crease. It's a fantastic scent profile that deserves a perfomance boost. Much like many products from the brand. Even so, the trade off for lowish long-term performance for such a great short term blast is quite possibly worth it. Just make sure you carry a little with you for a top-up every now and then.

This is a great barbershop Fougere, by accident. It was intended to be essentially a Replica scent of a specific London tailor shop, but in fulfilling that vibe quite admirably, it also defines itself as not only a "barbershop" Fougere, but an iconic one. A complex one - with aldehydes, metallic notes, honey, beeswax - but one that fits squarely in that genre. It's got the exotic notes that throw a curve to the standard genre note lineup, even more so than MDCI Invasion Barbare, with its violet and ginger notes. There is a pronounced earthy accord, and "Earthy" should be listed as an accord. In fact, Sartorial has a grassy/earthy accord that reminds me of the polo field grass accord of Macanudo by Maison d'ETTO.The metallic notes are very nuanced, to the extend I detect almost no hint of them. Certainly nothing like the obtrusive metallic accords of Chanel Platinum Egoiste, Maison Martin Margiela Replica At the Barbers, or others. Sartorial has been demoted to #3 in my rather extensive barbershop Fougere collection, replaced by Invasion Barbare. I go back and forth between Sartorial and Invasion Barbare for the #2 spot. Tom Ford Beau de Jour is my #1. In the final analysis this is a well-crafted, artsy, complex fragrance that makes a better "At the Barbers" replica (and certainly tailor shop replica) than Maison Martin Margiela could manage. Performance as I define it is pretty good. This can be suited to a 25 year old man if he's oriented to the sophisticated, mature, elegant and conservative. Those typically going through their bubblegum-chompin' teens and 20's phase will dismiss Sartorial, hence the 4.21 (although good, its underrated) Fragrantica rating.

This is without a doubt one of the most mesmerising things I have EVER smelled; I love Lavender fragrances, they remind me of walking through my nans front garden to visit. I'm so in love with this fragrance that it's hard to find the words. Sartorial to me is a warm hug, penhaligons really have a way of doing fragrances that evoke a memory of a place or feeling, a lot of scents that feel nostalgic. The entire note breakdown is a masterpiece, It has a little bit of everything that I love, Lavender, Leather, Honey, Oakmoss, Vanilla, Tonka, Woods. All that's missing for me is for there to be a edp flanker that has a touch of tobacco and leans more heavy on the vanilla and I wouldn't be buying or reaching for any fragrance ever again. Longevity: 8/10 - 5-6 hours slightly longer on clothes, very good performance for an edt. Sillage: this leaves a trail, if you notice people following you around just turn around and say Sartorial by Penhaligons and they should just say 'thanks' and leave 😅 Price: 7/10 (rrp) 9/10 (seasonal sales) I personally would wait till the seasonal sales and try to pick it up then for a bit cheaper without a box/wait till Penhaligons run a discount code like I did the week before summer sale dropped :') Will be stocking up on this one with the next sale, if you want an irresistible, unique, spicy floral and sweet fragrance, I recommend you do the same. As far as the comment goes for it only being suitable for an older man, I am 23, and completely, wholeheartedly disagree. This is a scent for a sophisticated and mature gentleman, and if there's one thing I've learnt is that it's experience and sensibility that equates to maturity, not age.

Old school clean. That's what this one is. Those of you who grew up smelling Brut, it's definitely in this. But there is more going on than just Brut. This is very well blended and smooth. Prominent lavender note throughout, but it's a classic English Lavender I believe. Not the same as lavender in some other fragrances, such as Beau de Jour. Honey/Beeswax is prominent throughout and I seem to get the myrrh note coming through toward the drydown. So think of Brut, then think of blending it with beeswax/honey/myrrh which adds a sort of gentle and clean sweetness to it. This fragrance is clean, but not fresh. Do you know what I'm saying? That's why I say this is an old school clean. It's not like the modern freshies kind of clean. The tailor shop inspiration makes sense. This fragrance sits somewhat intimately on the wearer. But it lasts a long time. This is a fragrance which could really be worn dressed up or casually. Best for mild weather. Probably not the best for really hot days but would be okay if it's warm out. I like barbershop fragrances quite a bit and have tried a lot of the popular ones. I think this may be the best one I've encountered. Platinum Egoiste is up there with it. Platinum Egoiste is very friendly, likable, extroverted, and bright. Sartorial is a bit more interesting, multi-faceted, deeper, eccentric. You'd wear Platinum to a first date. You'd wear this on a third. Clean, cool, unique, and sophisticated. Reminds me of a classic car. A place which is older or historic, but very well maintained. A bookstore. A theatre. A wooden church.

It is important to state that Sartorial is not linear. It is complex and the opening is markedly different than the mid and base. Opening: The opening is brilliant in a literal sense (i.e. it is bright and sparkly). It is metalic and aldehydic, yet watery and crisp. I use these words to describe a brightness that is not sharp or abrasive. It immediately reminds me of the smell of a pair of suit pants that have had a sharp crease pressed into them by a very hot iron and the smell of the startch (Crisp Spray Starch in the blue can) evaporating off hot fabric. It is not at all powdery at any point. The dry down: The opening only lasts 30 minutes. It then transforms into warmer, cosy, refined and classy scent. Its base is honey, rounded with an amber accord and slight spice with hints of oakmoss and wood keeping it masculine. This is not animalic, but it is not at all feminine. It is not floral like Fougere Royal. It is not green/planty like Invasion Barabre. It is not vetiver heavy like Masculine Pluriel. It is not citrus forward like Eau Savauge. It is not an abrasive lavender bomb like Pour Un Homme de Caron. I dont detect ambroxan. Is it a fougere? Well if it is, its on the warmer end of the spectrum. It is mature without being 'old'. Is it like Brut? Brut is colder, less complex, linear and sharper. Sartorial is warmer and more complex. However they are communicating the similar idea of a polished *man*. Sartorial is 10/10.

Sartorial by Penhaligon's.... what can I say my favorite Penhaligon's after Halfeti and English Fern, an artistic fragrance in every way, a perfume that instead of reporting mere notes, at least conceptually transports the brain of whoever sniffs it directly to Savil Row in any Sartoria on the street, the name is not by chance evocative even in the idea it wants to send. Among the myriad of expertly blended notes, I can smell classic notes such as musk, lavender, neroli, cardamom, tonka bean, pepper and more contemporary notes such as honey, beeswax and a wonderful metallic note, a characteristic that gives that final twist to the fragrance that makes me say it's a masterpiece. My head... arbitrarily imagines it as a tailor with a tape measure around his neck, who with metal scissors and intent on cutting the finest fabric for a tailored pinstriped suit, or perhaps an institutional anthracite suit, the smell of the buttonholes with beeswax, and the sweet background notes that give a contemporary touch, are the perfect crowning of everything. A fragrance that I wear exclusively in a shirt and tie, and every time I wear it, it inebriates us... me, but first of all what I wear, since it is a fragrance born to enhance these wonderful classic garments, a hymn to the time that was, which unfortunately is slowly disappearing.... Sartorial is the perfect fragrance to stand out, for the decadent dandy of our times.

This fragrance embodies a gentleman's scent, presenting a true aromatic fougère that evokes the essence of what a man is meant to smell like. While it has a classic masculine profile, it doesn't feel outdated; it stands apart from the 70's and 80's fragrances that can seem obsolete. Instead, this scent offers a timeless and clean aroma that would perfectly suit a 30-year-old man in a tailored suit, simply enjoying life. This isn't a fragrance for a fancy dinner or a date but rather for a well-dressed man going about his daily activities. Upon the initial spray, you are greeted by the classic barbershop fragrance of lavender. The scent is refreshing, with the lavender offering a crisp, clean note. Unlike other barbershop scents I have tried in the past, this one features a modern twist: a sweet and spicy honey complementing the lavender. The honey adds a warm, inviting undertone to the fragrance. The rich, sweet, and spicy aroma projected well from my skin for about six hours. After that, the scent began to settle and became closer to the skin. At this point, it transformed into a clean linen aroma reminiscent of freshly laundered clothes. The soapy notes in the background present a picture of a clean, well-put-together man. The scent lingered on my skin for an additional two hours after the initial projection phase, resulting in a total wear time of just over eight hours

This is Brut on steroids, turned up to 11, with much more complexity. I love this fragrance. It reminds me of my childhood / early teen years. Born in the early 70s, I was given a bottle of Brut after shave in the mid 80s by my parents to encourage me to start shaving. It reminds me of getting freshly out of the shower and being cleanly shaven. Although this can be worn anytime, it reminds me of a crisp fall or spring morning. I may be a product of my time, but this is super masculine. I get great performance from this fragrance, lasting 8+ hours, becoming a skin scent around 6 hours. I still get whiffs off my chest up to 12+ hours. The downside is that it is expensive, costing around $200 after tax and shipping. It’s worth it to me just for the memories it brings. Yet, I still consider this overpriced. Sometimes it isn’t readily available, either. When I purchased my bottle, it was only available from Nose Paris. No other online retailers had it at the time. Although, I see increased availability now from online retailers.

Sartorial is a satisfyingly contemporary take on the classical fougere, it is the very essence of sophisticated masculinity and easily one of my favourite scents from Penhaligons. I’m not usually a huge lover of fougeres, and I’m particularly picky when it comes to lavender, but I love this one. The lavender is easily the most prominent note, it’s there front and centre from the very first spray right until the end. Initially, it’s brightened up significantly by this light, airy and metallic combination of aldehydes and violet leaf. Before long though, it settles into a warmer, slightly sweeter base consisting of smooth cardamom and delicious beeswax. It’s an odd mix of notes which simply seems to work. Despite how many notes are listed, it doesn’t smell overly complex or confusing. It remains pretty linear throughout its life, to my nose, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring. From my collection of around 105 fragrances currently, this is one of only 3 fougeres I own which says a lot.

This is my favorite fragrance, period, and one which I find is criminally underrated. Rumors of discontinuation are greatly concerning to me- it's been hard to find for the last 6 months or so. The fragrance itself embodies the feeling of put-togetherness, cleanliness, and sophistication when putting on a freshly ironed dress shirt. It is mature, yet not "old" feeling- you don't necessarily have to be a professional or above a certain age threshold to wear this fragrance, but rather it requires a certain composure of the wearer. I wouldn't personally wear it with a hoodie. It shines in tailoring, but works just as well in a nice sweater, jeans, and a Barbour jacket. What is really special here is the pairing of steam and metallic notes, alongside beeswax, to achieve that photorealistic Saville Row feeling, with oakmoss cleaning it up further, and lavender contributing some heart and warmth. This is perhaps the most masterful fragrance composition of all time, in my opinion.

Smells like one of the best traditional shaving soaps I have tried, if you are familiar with something like clubman pinaud soap, you would know what I mean. The aldehydes for the 'steam' accord make it come across foamy to me, like if the 'look' of a lather could have a smell. The lavender has a natural edge to it, and it has a real thickness to it. Its very smooth and well done, up there with my top fougeres. It does not smell like brut at all to me, at least not like the Australian version which smells strangely like playdoh. I find it more akin to stuff like Fougere d'argent, Masculin pluriel and Azzaro pour homme. Nothing like the fougeres that teeter on the borderline of being a chypre like Roja scandal pc and eau sauvage, not aggressive like Duc de vervins, Drakkar and Jazz, not rugged old school like beau de jour, boucheron homme and NY intense. This smells classy and smooth as heck and is one of my dumb-reach office fragrances.

#948 in my "Tour de Fragrance" This might actually be worth $180 to me. Such a unique, complex scent! I can smell my aunt's farm and beehives in this one. Honey, beeswax, the surrounding garden and hayfields. Kind of wild. For me very, very nostalgic. Dudes. If Brut smelled like this I'd be wearing Brut right now. This does NOT smell like Brut Prestige or Brut. And it does not smell like Tom Ford Fougere d'Argent, which until now I considered the best fougere ever created. This is better. This is C-Suite office wear. Not for the kid in the mailroom. But not for everyday use. Save if for the negotiating table at a mergers and acquisitions close where you're going to make that wise-ass from J. P. Morgan your bitch. I think also a killer date scent for a man who's made his mark. Yep. I'm in for a bottle.

Sometimes you smell a great fragrance for the first time and think, "This is basically why the art of perfumery exists!" That's how I felt about first smelling Sartorial--it is an absolutely wonderful classic fougére with depth, complexity, and elegance, although the metallic notes lift it from being too old-fashioned or ordinary. There's a tiny bit of honey in it (but not too much to make it sickly sweet) that blends beautifully with the beeswax note, and even a tiny bit of leather (but not too much to make it dank) to give it more balance. This would make an ideal office scent, although it's also sophisticated enough to wear for evenings. This is one of the best scents from one of the first houses I ever tried--I can only wonder why it took me so long to try this fragrance from them.

This is the first review I write and it's gonna be an ode to this fragrance. I will start by saying that this fragrance is unapologetically old fashioned. But with a modern twist in it. It is fresh but also a bit sweet, sharp but a bit powdery, slightly animalic, elegant and mature. This is one of the most complex perfumes I have ever smelled. This complexity makes this very special to me, in a way that I only allow myself to wear it on special occasions. Another plus is its performance. I own quite a few fougeres and this is probably my favourite one together with Beau de Jour by Tom Ford. These two fragrances are like yin and yang to me. They serve the some purpose but this one is tradition that has modernity in it whereas BDJ is modern with tradition in it.

My experience is based on using Rive Gauche & 2 x 10mls splits of Ivasion Barbare back in 2015-16. Compared to Sartorial which I tried many a times in the same period, the former came across a bit screechy, while the later in current formulation was transparent corelated to price. My only qualm therefore from Sartorial was, low-moderate performance. Having enjoyed each wear of Sartorial, I was looking for a friend for my vintage 'Bois du Portugal' and scored an almost full bottle for AU$90. The performance from this bottle is noticeably better. So, either this is a pre-2014 formulation or possibly due to ageing the formulation has gotten stronger. So no qualms anymore & needless to say, I'm overjoyed ! IG: @Eclectic.Scents

Wow, Just wow! If you are looking for a gentlemen's classic look no further. This is a cologne that I would imagine Don Draper wearing if it was around back then. Scent: 10/10 Compliment god alert, My wife loves it and I nearly always get complimented when I wear this masterpiece. The scent reminds me of a luxury classic aftershave that is in no means dated. Longevity: This will last around 10 hours for me and is by no means offensive. Overall: 10/10 a gentlemen's classic. If you are looking to smell sophisticated this is the cologne for you. I would buy this again when I am finished with the bottle. As a fan of gentlemen like colognes I consider Sartorial a Grade A Masterpiece. Well done Penhaligons well done.

Blind bought this at a duty free in Moscow six years ago. I’m now on my fourth bottle. It’s the standard Christmas gift my wife gets me each year because it is my everyday work scent. It’s got all the elements of a good fougère but there’s something else lingering underneath that I can never quite define. It’s the scent that doesn’t actually take me back to the days when my father would bring me to his Saturday trips to the barber, but it’s close enough that I get a wave of mostly good memories coupled with the feeling that I’m now there, but 30 years later. Hard to describe. My prior favorite was YSL Rive Gauche, but this supplanted it almost immediately. I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing this one.

Ok, yes, I love Bertrand Duchaufour's creations but besides that I think Sartorial is a great scent. (Deservedly) ambitious and complex as an "architectural structure"! A perfect union between classic and modern. A traditional fougere with a retrò feel always balanced by an hyper modern allure given by the "effects" notes (beeswax, metal, old wood). I'd say this one is more a sensation than a real perfume and that's why I love it. As I previously said is quite complex but so well executed to become a perfect everyday's fragrance for anyone into modern classicism.Sillage is good, lasting power not much (4-5 hours on my skin) but I still firmly believe this one to be highly recommendable. Rating: 8.5/10

Won't say much apart from that this fragrance is my no1 Penhaligon fragrance out of 15+ Penhaligon's in my collection, it's just so so so unique, addictive and versatile. 100% FB worthy, I'd say blind buy, but I can possibly sense it might be a marmite, loath or love. I find it hard to understand how this can be a bland fragrance, yes it's not complex, nor is deep, but it's gorgeous :) Edit: Ooooh I just noticed that in the "reminds me of" section, a few votes went to Brut, OMG, how did I forget about that fragrance? that's my childhood favourite, and oh yes it so does now ring bells of Brut! No wonder why I love this fragrance, and even with that note in my head I love it more :D

Lavender and fresh air - there is definitely an oddly “steamy” quality to it which calls to mind a stack of freshly pressed laundry or something. Leaves a trail but in a very pleasant way, more like someone opening a window than getting in your personal space. Really balances being a classic fougère with a very clever and fresh composition that makes it feel unique and special. Traditionally masculine notes but it’s so smooth and airy that it’d smell welcome on pretty much anyone who wants to smell fresh and put together. Skin scent is very sweet with the honey and vanilla notes coming out but the aura is all clean aldehyde - one of the cleverest uses of aldehyde notes I’ve smelt.

Beautiful sweet "lavender", manly, classic... Great perfume. I happen to have another lavender-based scent, Opus II by Amouage which is one of my favourites. Opus II seems to be almost only lavender and is much higher in these tones but stays unisex, Sartorial has something in it that makes it feel masculine, it is much more polite, refined, rounded. Lavender in Opus II seems to be like in turbo mode when compared with Sartorial. Whoever finds too little lavender in Sartorial or just wants more of it but doesn't mind the loss of leaning towards masculinity, the Opus II is a nice thing to try then. Sartorial seems better suited for office than Opus II.

I’m a professor at a university and this, guys, is a perfect perfume for academia. I finally found the perfect scent to go with my corduroy blazer with leather elbow patches and brown oxfords- Sartorial! While none of these things are particularly sexually alluring, they do portray a stolid sense of benign intellectual authority and manly erudition, coupled with a good-if not somewhat antiquated-sense of personal grooming. Think of wearing this one while reading in some prodigious great library, surrounded by stacks of leather bound volumes of classic literature. Smoking a pipe, perhaps. This fragrance just may raise the wearer’s IQ by a few points.

On me this opens as lavender and pepper, it's clean and classic. I wear this as a mid-30s woman and I think it's definitely unisex, anyone with class and refinement can pull this off regardless of gender. As it dries down it becomes lavender with honey, amber and clean woody notes. I don't get much of the spice or ginger or metallic notes. Luxurious and refined, classy and classic, are the first words that spring to mind when I smell this. I love to wear it for business meetings as I feel it's definitely a "suit scent". Lasts over 10h and projects within arms length. Good all year round but I tend to reach for it more in spring.

This puts one of the biggest smiles on my face and puts me in a great mood!! I grew up obsessed with Brut. My dad wore a lot of Brut and so did a lot of other men in the 80’s. It’s a smell that immediately takes me back to a simpler time. Sartorial is very close to what Brut was but not as sharp and punchy. I can confidently wear Sartorial any time of the year and not worry that it’s for the wrong occasion. I get 10-12 hours of longevity. It’s not a beast by any means.....which is good because this needs to sit close to the skin to enjoy the magic. Cheers!!!

This solidifies fougere as my favorite class of fragrances. Barber shoppy but not soapy, the lavender, beeswax/honey really make this a pleasure to wear. I heard that it is reminiscent of freshly ironed clothes, but I think this takes a bit of imagination. I do pick up slight metallic notes on the opening, but it's very faint. Also, I do notice the Brut note, but it is not the dominant scent. I really like to dress up for this, but it can also be worn with a t-shirt. Always a pleasant, clean smell and now one of my favorites. Scent 9/10 Longevity 8/10

A perfect office scent. This is a pleasant barbershop fragnance that is perfect for the office. Pleasant, clean and inoffensive, it is still interesting. It seems to last the workday as like a clean smell. It has a wonderful lavender. I literally used up my bottle a few minutes ago and I will get it again. A complete mystery why penhaligon's don't have this in their sample pack. But this is a safe blind buy for any man who want a pleasant and non-challenging professional scent. I can't imagine anyone would consider this challenging or bad smelling.

I’m in the process of discovering a lot of fragrances from Penhaligon’s (mostly from the Portraits collection) and have found them to be relatively disappointing in either scent, performance or both. Sartorial is not one of those, to me this has incredible performance. It’s a barbershop style scent that smells modern and incredibly complex. Masculine and more on the mature side, I’m picturing someone in their 30’s and upwards. It’s also priced fair for a fragrance coming from a niche house with a complex scent profile and good performance.

This is similar to Angel's Share by Kilian in that they are both warm, woodsy, spicy scents that cultivate an image of sophistication and maturity. However, Sartorial differs in that it is lighter, fresher, and much more suitable for daytime wear than Angel's Share. Sartorial finds itself at home used by clergymen- older adult men, dressed in their Sunday Best, at a respectable formal gathering in the bright early morning (church). That is the feeling of Sartorial. Would not recommend this scent for adolescents or for a night on the town.

I was introduced to this amazing fragrance when working at The Art of Shaving. My wife (then girlfriend) came in and smelled it and was completely turned off by it. I would put on each on different days to 'model' the fragrances to the customers. I wore Sartorial one day and met my girlfriend for a movie after work. Near the end of the movie, she leaned over, asked what I was wearing, and whispered it smelled so good she could not wait to get me home and jump me. Proof that a good fragrance can change based on your personal ph.

A good pal introduced me to fragrances and it took me a while to get fully immersed. Buying a full bottle of Sartorial was my initiation and my undoing. Now I'm hooked. I love it. It's so versatile. Great in winter and fall, but also works in summer or spring. I feel so refined when I put on my suit and spray this on. It lasts a long time. The longevity and projection are no joke. It's not such a compliment puller like a more amber or floral scent but it's appreciated for sure. Definitely one of my favorite Penhaligon scents.

I have 37 fougeres and Guerlain Heritage, both EDP and EDT with the wooden cap, are the only ones better than this. Its a magnificent blend. Its so fresh and clean! I absolute love it. Unfortunately it only lasts for a couple of hours. The cheapest I can find it is $150 so I got a bottle of Moonstone Bleu for $30. I have been on a run lately despising dupes, however when I saw the excellent reviews, even at Parfumo, I figured that I would give it a run. If I see a partial of this come up for cheap, I will aquire it.

One of the very best offerings from the brand, both in terms of the scent composition and the storytelling. Classic fougere that is so elegantly done in a very timeless manner. It’s so complex but not overwhelming, crisp but not too harsh or aggressive. I love how sartorial delivers a fine portion of everything: wood, spices, warmth, sweetness, powder, musk, amber, freshness. Also, it lasts a really long time on skin for a Cologne/EDT. Can’t think of a better fougere than this - very blessed that I own a bottle!

If i never smelled green Irish tweed and someone said "this is it, it's git" i would totally believe it. It's classic, floral, complex. It's manly in urban way. An opposite of a lumberjack smell. Tsar is on the opposite side of this lineage of a fragrance. Both are manly but Sartorial prefers to work smart while Tsar is all about brut force. 35+ frag, not a daily wear tho. Redundant if you aren't a frag head. There are more obvious choices however, if you love fragrances, it should be in the menu.

This is peak Penhaligons. The epitome of smelling like a cavalier gentleman. It’s complex, alluring and evokes a feeling of status and desire like no other perfume. As a backdrop for context, i have been using this perfume for 4 years and it still continues to surprise me. It has even gone as far as to become a memento for my wife during long periods where we couldn’t see each other, the fragrance would linger on clothes and items, keeping that closeness dear. Amazing fragrance!

I just recieved a new bottle as a gift. It is quite different from a decant from an older batch that I based my earlier review on. Side by side comparison makes it very obvious. The newer bottle has much less of a metalic/aldehydic/ozonic opening. It is sweeter and warmer. It is more linear. It's an 8/10 sadly. The decant from an older batch is much more metallic, more 3 dimensional. This is the 10/10. Would be interested to know if there has been a reformulation.

Extremely creative blend. I don't think the honey is that prominent, the beeswax is more noticeable in my opinion. Smells like applying a very good quality aftershave and wearing a crisp freshly ironed shirt. Very elegant, gentlemanly and mature. The opening is sharp, metallic and ozonic with a lot of aldehydes but not in a bad way at all. A bit sweeter than the traditional aftershave/barbershop style, but still more fresh than sweet in my opinion. 10/10

Wow. I was expecting a typical mens fougere a lot of lavender, oakmoss which I can appreciate. This takes those elements and adds some sweet and soft elements from the honey and amber and just makes this magical. I can’t believe how surprised I am and was hesitant because I have at the barbers (which I absolutely love) and thought it’d be redundant. It is completely different. It’s still gentlemanly but soft and ambery. Beautiful

Literal disbelief that this is being discontinued. Are you effing kidding me? One of, if not THE, best in its class. Going to go get a replacement bottle now before it is gone... (Maybe it isn't true. Hopefully it isn't. Either way I need another bottle...) Edit/Update: Got another backup bottle. But in the meantime, wanted to mention Moonstone Bleu by Fragrance world as a somewhat close interpretation. For $20. I bought both).

This is right up there with the best fougeres. Sartorial isnt dandy or jaunty or spicy. What's unusual is the warm, comforting feel emerging in the drydown. Elemi isn't listed but that's what it reminds of (think Dior's Eau Sauvage Parfum - I've the 2017 version). I've only a sample but am enjoying this very much and may get an FB in time. Highly versatile - multiple occasions/situations to wear. Performance decent on me. 4/5

This is such a great confidence boosting fragrance that gives off boss vibes. The combination of the lavender and green notes gives it that traditional fougere scent that eventually morphs into an addicting creamy texture. It's not a very long-lasting scent though so it'd be good to pack a bit of this stuff into a pocket atomizer to refresh throughout the day.

I absolutely love wearing sartorial. Reading Penhaligon’s inspiration for the fragrance helped me appreciate and enjoy the notes and well done perfumery. To me it’s polished, uplifting, masculine, and exudes a noticeable yet reserved male sensuality. One of those fragrances that is in sync with my skin, chemistry and personality.

Wow, this smells unapologetically classy. This completely reminds me of Brut but modern. I was another kid smelling dad's aftershaves. Old Spice and Brut where the scents. This is modernized with quality ingredients and has this regal essence about it. This is the scent for me. Finally I found what I can consider my signature.

Love this fragrance. After smelling a decant at first, it smelled like brut, but this one is very refined and doesn't feel cheap. However, the longevity is very low for me; I could not smell it after 1 hour. So you have to respray after some time. Rating overall 8/10. Really love this type of aftershave, tailoring smell.

I've smelled hundreds and possibly thousands of fragrances, and this opening still blows me away. One of the best openings on earth. Oh, and the rest of the fragrance is good too. This will appeal to an an gentleman 35+ year old. A masterpiece; and the best from the house. Scent 10/10 Performance 6.5/10

I don't really care for saying a lot. I think Sartorial is excellent. People don't just compliment it, they genuinely inquire about it. Very versatile as far as season and situation. Top tier in its category. Going to put my other favs on the back burner for awhile and just enjoy this. Stay well.

This stuff is seriously amazing. The king of fougeres as far as I’m concerned. Better than Rive Gauche and the MDCI and I love them both. Smells like amazing shaving cream. Ultra smooth. I don’t get the metallic notes. So happy I have this! Also, I don’t think this smells like Brut at all.

Same as LauraAD below - I'm an early 30s lady wearing this. Can't get enough of it. Wear it all the time. Great value. Long lasting. I've asked men if I smell like a man and they said no I smell amazing. 😂 who knows if it's true - doesn't matter, I love it and I'll keep wearing it!
