The Blazing Mr Sam

If only Lord George performed this well... Last Portrait I got a sample for and I also love it. I must say I can totally see why people compare it to Halfeti, but they're still different enough where I don't think owning both would be redundant at all. I suppose if Halfeti is too formal or too mature for you, or you simply don't like oud, you may like this one better. The scent is a spicy and woody tobacco vanilla combo, extremely likeable and refined but not at all a super mature or formal fragrance, this could be worn for casual occasions by younger people (like myself), which is why I think this would be a more "mass appealing" pick over Halfeti. I must also admit the fragrance somewhat reminded me of Jazz Club (which I own a 1 oz bottle of), but I'd need to make a proper A/B test to see how far the similarities actually go. I can immediately tell this is spicier, whereas Jazz Club is boozy, but I'm wondering if the rest of both fragrances may be similar in some way. Another detail I noticed right after spraying was that I caught a Vicks Vapor Rub-ey aura that reminded me of Layton, of all things, but it was really fleeting and didn't last more than a few minutes. Moving on to performance, Mr. Sam here does really good in all aspects. In terms of longevity it's well above average, as I'm closing in on 10 hours since spraying it on me and I can still detect it on my arms fairly well. Projection isn't that crazy, I'd say it's moderate for the most part, which I think is a good thing as this may not be the best scent for filling up an entire room. Sillage is, on the other hand, very strong. I could smell myself very strongly for a good 5 hours or so, to the point my throat was getting mildly irritated, but not to the same degree other fragrances like Virgin Island Water have. Overall, Mr. Sam is an extremely solid fragrance and, from the three Portraits I sampled this week, it's the best rounded of the bunch, as it's the best performer by a mile and, despite not being my favorite of the three scents, it's still an incredibly nice smelling fragrance.

Penhaligon's The Blazing Mr. Sam is, in my opinion, an excellent fragrance and, in fact, the only one from the entire line that I truly enjoy. It embodies a spicy oriental scent with character and sophistication, standing out for an intensity that makes it memorable, along with projection and longevity that surpass many alternatives. I love the opening: it's vibrant and without noticeable synthetic touches. It presents an explosion of intense spices—black pepper and cardamom—that quickly merge with a subtle yet well-defined tobacco note (I can barely detect the cinnamon). The evolution is remarkable; it's not a linear scent. Over time, the spices soften, allowing a patchouli that comes across as earthy to my nose to emerge, and everything culminates in a creamy, warm vanilla base. Performance is one of its strong suits. In my experience, the longevity is impressive (6-8 hours clearly noticeable, even longer on clothes), and the projection is generally powerful. For the first 2-3 hours, it leaves a notable sillage that tends to attract compliments (and in my case, it does), though it then settles into a more intimate and close-wearing "aura" after 4-5 hours. In summary, it's a solid and charismatic scent, ideal for evening occasions, urban strolls in the heart of winter, and even dates (in cold weather, of course). I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fragrance with presence and distinction, without being overwhelming. My personal score: Scent: 9/10 Projection: 8/10 Longevity: 9/10 Versatility: 7/10

In my pursuit of Cardamom fragrances, I came upon this one. However, i IMMEDIATELY ran away when I saw the price! Holy Shinola is this frag expensive! But the review from @Hannahwdraws (04/20/22) convinced me to purchase a full bottle. Will return for a review once it arrives... 07MAR24 (Arrival day) Good lord....what have I done? This is too good. This is ridiculously good... This makes my "Red Tobacco" and "Mystery Tobacco" seem like unrefined prototypes of fragrances. I cannot believe how absolutely refined and posh this tobacco fragrance is!! This is very much a Tobacco fragrance, but that Tea note is in the background of the fragrance when you smell it up close and it makes it SO surprisingly REFRESHING!! In the air, it's pure sultry sexy refined tobacco and cardamom and something that feels slightly "Green"....making it the perfect candidate for this spring weather we've been having this week. Wheeeeee-doggy does this baby SING!! Loud and proud and you can't miss it! One test spray on my forearm is lighting up the room! It's been 10 minutes of heavenly bliss and I know I'm going to be wearing this the rest of the week, the weekend and into next week. But...there's a major problem. Now I have to figure out how the heck I'm going to get another bottle. =[ Conundrum... EDIT: this is soooo perfect layered on top of "Khurafi"....goodness gracious! EDIT: My bottle is indeed real. I will look into obtaining a sample of the suggested "Montale - Oud Dream" later this week, thank you!

Whoever came up with the idea to personify Mr. Sam as an American abroad was on the nose in that regard. It blends more American popular notes while retaining that sense of English character and reservedness. This is probably the biggest qualm people who get it dont seem to understand. A Penhaligons isn't supposed to scream "I'm here" like a nuclear arabic clone house fragrance, its supposed to be more of a restrained skin-close scent that says "Good Evening"; classy and gentlemany more suited for a late night soiree with a shaken not stirred martini than a night club with $8 jello shots and jager bombs. In that sense, Mr. Sam seems to bridge the two much like how its inbetween the scents. Its slightly louder and longer lasting than the rest of the portraits but with its own take. It does share alot of similarities with Halfeti but is far more masculine leaning than the unisex Halfeti which i mainly attribute to the differences between Sam having cinnamon/tobacco vs the bulgarian rose and bergamot in Halfeti. The biggest point of contention seems to be the price which has gone up in recent years. As some have said yes, Oud Malaki is very close and for a far lower price point. Having smelled the two side by side though, I can say that Sam is better blended and smoother with the note transitions. Overall highly recommended, great for a night out but also classy enough that its office acceptable.

This is a bold, confident, flirtatious, and incredibly striking fragrance. If you enjoy luxurious, unusual, and mature-smelling perfumes, this one is definitely worth trying. Even though it has an old-school character, it never feels outdated, stuffy, or boring. Surprisingly, it still manages to feel fresh and full of personality. The spicy, woody, and slightly sweet scent profile gives it a very seductive and almost mischievous charm. Even though it's not listed in the official notes, I constantly pick up something in the background that reminds me of dark red cherries or overripe purple plums. There's a subtle sweet-and-tart fruitiness hiding underneath. Maybe it's the combination of cinnamon, vanilla, and patchouli creating that effect. This is a very enjoyable fragrance, but it's also quite a challenging one. While it can definitely be worn as a unisex scent, I personally prefer it on men. It's not the kind of fragrance that will appeal to everyone, and it's certainly not something I would recommend for every age group, season, or occasion. It feels much more special and selective than that. That said, it's such a unique and magnificent scent that it makes you feel confident, spoiled, and somehow powerful when wearing it. To me, this is the type of fragrance that experienced perfume lovers are most likely to appreciate and fall in love with.

A very similar scent to Papilefiko by Nishane. It sits in the dark realm, between sweet and spicy. It seems like it cannot make up it's mind about what it wants to be. However, this works in it's favour. The range of spice in this can only be described as a cornucopia. I've had elaborate curries that have less spices in them than this thing. I've also had sweets with nowhere near as much sweetness, and I've got such a sweet tooth, that the tooth in question has been eroded away by my consistent and sustained sugar abuse. It takes the dials for both of the sweet and spicy spectrums and turns those dials up so hard, that the dials snap off the machine altogether. Fuck knows what machine I'm talking about, but you know what I mean. If you want to smell like a sexy, dangerous bastard, put this on, open the window and fuck the night. It is so perfectly sweet and spicy, that it has the ability to charm the knickers off a nun. Male, female, non-binary, it doesn't matter to The Blazing Mr Sam; it'll give anything a good fucking go. It would probably charm Martians into your bed if they came down from space. 9/10. I don't want it to get a big head, so it's a 9.

This is a really lovely classy scent that projects well for maybe 2 hours, maybe 3. Once it's dry it's kinda leathery, oudy. Definitely deep smells. Like all of Penhaligon's scents I can't criticize them for any off notes. They're one of those companies that produces nothing but quality. However unlike most of their other scents this performs quite well. During the opening it's a lot more refreshing than it is later on. I always find it a nice surprise when something not citrusy or ozonic finds a way to be refreshing. Think Pimm's on a hot summer day somewhere along the Thames. Not leaning on the obvious citrus to brighten things up. I'm terrible at picking out individual notes, to my nose it's floral and spicy. Cardamom makes a lot of sense here, I guess the black pepper does too though it's not in your face. I'd never recommend something so expensive as Penhaligon's as a blind buy, but if you're looking through their range for performance frags try get a sample or a few sprays of this one on you to try out. Projection: 8/10 Longevity: 6/10 Quality: 9/10 (really lovely)

I keep going back to the idea that this has some similarity with Halfeti (of course) but African Leather, from the house of Memo. Now, why did I buy? The note breakdown and presentation. This is masculine, empowering, and elegant. I say this has a similarity with African Leather because of the spices. It is lighter in the spice count but still spicy, dry, with additional tobacco and a very apparent vanilla. The comparison with Halfeti misses out on the rose inclination from my skin as well as a leathery texture. Now, Halfeti is a bit more unisex than Mr Sam is but they play a similar role for sure. Now, I had a concern on the note of cumin, which typically comes strongly off my skin and rather unpleasant. Not the case here! Longevity is above average for me between 7-8 hours on skin but projection is where it kinda lacks. Feels and smells very toned down at right around the 2nd hour. For the price, I got it for around $180 but would just not pay anymore than it. Penhaligon's has this elegance in being more subdued which I really appreciate it matching with how/who I am.

The Blazing Mr Sam is truly delightful! As a fan of cardamom, cinnamon and tobacco I love this. It’s marketed as a masculine perfume, but I would happily wear this. It reminds me of, from what I have in my collection, African Leather by Memo Paris. A smoother, more polished and tamed version of African Leather with more mass appeal and leaning more unisex. What makes these two scents somewhat similar to my nose is the cardamom note that’s at the forefront in both these scents. The more I I progress in my perfume journey, the more I appreciate a well rounded, well balanced perfume, without a sickening sweet vanilla base or a sneezing inducing amount of pepper in the opening. Just the right balance of everything in order to create a harmonious blend as the final product. On that note, The Blazing Mr Sam represents an illustrious example of soft/warm spices mixed with tobacco, vanilla and saffron. Simply beautiful!

The most western take on spicy tobacco that is actually not mainstream smelling and has a regal character. This is not what you would expect and imagine to smell like, it's a very unique creation, as much as Royal Tobacco by Amouage is oriental, this one is western. Although a bit harsh smelling it has a very clean scent profile very well put together and with no edginess. For spicy tobacco enthusiasts this one is a must have for special occasions or sometimes when/where you want to smell daring and different. To my nose the cardamom in this is quite harsh but manageable and the Tobacco smells like a weaker version of Tobacco Oud's profile and other parts of it are quite standard and lovely. This by far is the best Penhaligon and has a well deserved cult around it. Overall very well put together and signature worthy for colder days and climates and obviously a very good choice for any special occasion.

The scent that introduced me into the fragrance world... when I had smelled it at first was the best fragrance I've smelled in my entire life, but the price was just insane it was nearly 500 Canadian... I was not about to pay that amount. I stayed up nights searching for clones, inspirations, and dupes... But to no avail. None could hold a candle to the original. until fragrance world released a clone named "Apex." Simply an amazing perfume, and then followed up with sotoor Waaw from Rasasi. Blazing Mr Sam had become redundant to me at that point because these 2 could do everything Sam could do, but better while considering this Perfumes crazy price point. After that it was only down the rabbit hole... into fragrance addiction. I can't not recommend this fragrance. It's simply perfection. If you have the money buy it, otherwise get Apex from Fragrance World its almost 1:1.

love it! true cardamom and cinnamon at the start, with already some herbal touches already peeking through. the dry down got me excited to smell how the touch of saffron starts to appear, bringing it to a much warmer place that i really appreciate. the patchouli here is quite savory, almost like oregano, which is very lovely imo. but once it settles, a super comforting (and slightly powdery) cloud of tobacco and vanilla is left overall, has a vintage vibe to it that makes me think of a pipe-smoking historian type of character; it's like a visit to a very sophisticated herbal doctor; like gandalf but in a three-piece suit. i find it quite interesting that this fragrance is based on an american character, but whatever! i would buy it if only it wasn't worth a kidney and a pancreas!

This fragrance is a gem. I would definitely agree with others who take issue with the high price point. Presentation: Beautiful bottle, heavy cap. Haven't had the problem with the gold flaking off, but I have heard it could be an issue. The atomizer is great, at least the one I have Fragrance: Amazing spicy, tobacco notes right off the top, and wonderfully blended with the creamy cedarwood in the base. Throughout there is a nice sweetness that doesn't come off cloying and it is well balanced against the other notes. Overall, I would recommend this fragrance for a dressed up affair, like a wedding. My current bottle has been aging and is only getting better after 2 years I will say that after purchasing Bois Mystique from Hobigant, that there is a similar note profile from it

Beautiful cardamom and tobacco sent. I totally agree that this has similarities with both Halfeti and Tobacco Vanille. This fragrance takes Halfeti and freshens it up, removing what I find to be a rather medicinal oud. The fragrance opens with a nice blast of cardamom and cinnamon with some pepper. The cinnamon and pepper are almost reminiscent of the opening to Spicebomb EDT. After drying down it leans heavily into the tobacco and vanilla, but still has this slightly woody and fresh edge that makes it very easy to wear. I personally enjoy this fragrance significantly more than Halfeti. I'm not the kind of person who generally enjoys wearing oud fragrances, so to still have the Halfeti backbone with something more wearable is awesome. Really nice fragrance!

(Sampled) If I had a choice signature scent, I'm afraid it would be this. Can I afford that, no. But one day. I love 20s-50s fashion maybe old alongside my metal sensibilities, and alt piercings. Either way, this scent is the only thing that's really captured the 'I'm an old man and still cool' vibe. This scent is spicy, through and through - opening on heavy sweet cardamon pastries and settling to smoke room but.... it never loses the initial charm. Which is fantastic. It is masculine beauty. This shit will last all day btw, but not spill out so much to abuse those around you. It's bordering, you could daily wear but I think it's best on nights and coldest months. 9.5/10 - It's incredible. BUT again, the price - it's up to you whether it's worth it.

Woman at Selfridges recommended this one out of the Penhaligon’s range and sprayed it on a tester strip for me. First impressions: nice, no wow factor for me but pretty good. Wasn’t all that interested so I put the tester strip in my pocket and went to smell some other fragrances. I pulled the tester strip out of my pocket a few hours later when I got home. I gave it another smell and oh my....this stuff is heavenly. The cardamom and saffron combination make this incredibly alluring and addictive, with a really nice smooth tobacco and vanilla in the dry-down. Perfect amount of spices that almost makes my nose tingle which I really enjoy lol. Very mass appealing and I could see it as a great signature scent, fitting all seasons excluding summer.

I’m absolutely in love with this fragrance! it opens up with a bright burst of cardamom that is so sexy and magnetic, yet never overpowering. This fragrance isn’t desperate for approval, it stands proud with its own distinctive character. It exudes that bold sophistication you expect from a true niche brand, yet it remains effortlessly wearable and elegant. On my skin, its longevity is spectacular. Just two sprays carry me confidently through the day. Mr Sam is, in every sense, perfection—a flawless 10/10.

I love this fragrance. It’s like the designer version of halfeti, which would make this the best designer fragrance ever because halfeti is quite literally the best signature scent for men. This is a good break from halfeti without sacrificing that dank exotic spicy aroma that just gets people tweeking. Signature scent worthy I had an unfortunate experience of buying a discounted bottle on mercari, i believe the fragrance was fake, however the bottle seemed quite legit. But after buying it again from a authorized retailer i realized it was definitely a fake. Please beware of buying discounted penhaligons fragrances on sites like ebay and mercari.

A take on a "blue" fragrance for a rich gentleman. Very good but not groundbreaking. Doesn't need to be to stand out from most fragrances the last 3-4 years. Don't burn through this as an office unless it's Millar Monday. IYKYK 30 and up. Stay with YSL and LV young guns. Lifetime Fitness smells like they're circulating Y EDP from the air vents, but they're not. Should be 100ml for the price and match the big head and make me feel a little better. Barrier to Entry is not always a bad thing 50ish bottle collection. 80% chance of a repurchase 5 hours realistically with 2-3 "appropriately" projecting. 9/10 Lakers in 5
