This fragrance feels like destiny in a bottle. From the first moment I smelled it, I knew I had found something rare. This is the iris scent I had always imagined but never encountered until now. This is a very balanced , bold and masculine fragrance. It's like a classic remade into a modern style . It has a grey suit , evening , gentleman, barbershop type of scent . Staying true to the portraits collection it has that thick texture to it. At the top all the notes are pretty strong . Elemi being the strongest . But there's a touch of freshness. After that the orris vanilla and oak become the strongest notes with the black pepper kind of keeping all the notes in check . The vanilla , black pepper and oak mix gives a slight cinnamon note out. I think this is a great evening , date night, formal fragrance . Performance it's pretty good. It won't project for very long but it stays on the skin pretty strong for hours . It projected about an arms length for maybe an hour . But stayed on the skin strong for about 4 hours . Eventually faded about 8 hours later . I'm my opinion this is the best masculine fragrance from the portraits collection. If you are looking for a gentleman, barbershop , subtle woody vanilla fragrance this is totally worth a look . I really like this but it's just so expensive. Especially for something I'll maybe use once a month . Maybe one day they will make a 1.0-1.7oz bottle . Tested it today and I’ll tell you I’m going to buy a full bottle as soon as the store has it back in stock. It opens with a nice floral pungent thing.. dries down to the most beautiful iris perfume I’ve encountered. It reminds you of iris and for sure more perfumes have iris, but the vanilla combo, and that pungent opening is different. Somehow the drydown is very smooth and very very luxurious. DHI is very pungent and keeps pungent, this isn’t. The drydown is really like the note breakdowns are vanilla sesame and the iris that keeps everything so buttery smooth and powdery. As a man I enjoy this and it’s definitely unisex. The price is overpriced for sure, since you can get similar vibes and scents for much cheaper, but as someone who smells everything intens and love the small details, i love this and I’m waiting for my bottle! And ooh the performance is good indeed.. stays for a while 8 hours and projects fine. 9/10 for me! What I wanted more? Not sure but I think maybe some leather in the drydown? As it almost comes over as leather sometimes.. it could have been bit more stronger for me ( that facet). But believe me this is very close to perfection, and the best iris for sure!

Absolutely incredible. Such a refined, classic, gentlemanly barbershop blend, but it stands out as its own thing due to the sesame and the oak. On me it’s a creamy, buttery iris and vanilla with nutty and woodsy nuances. This stuff is gorgeous and addictive. I also am not a victim of the performance issues. Thank the heavens because this was a $315 blind buy. Yes, It is soft projection, but because I think it’s supposed to be. This is the butler spying on the rest of the family... he isn’t supposed to shout, but rather whisper. I get about 3-4 hours of this soft-medium projection which resides to a skin scent for about another 3-4. Despite its appearance, It isn’t going to be the elephant in the room. This isn’t your room filler and there is nothing beastly about this. I am personally okay with that, some folks need to fill the room with their scent. To each their own... I find this to be extremely versatile as well. Signature worthy stuff. 3/4 seasons, any scenario. May be better suited for dates/special occasions just because pulling the trigger costs a pretty penny... but it is worth every single one of those pretty pennies in my opinion.

I’m trying to get into niche perfumes and I heard this brand was well regarded for a good reason. I bought this at a duty free store in Qatar after sampling it. Initially the opening reminds me a lot of jpgs le male le parfum just a bit less spicy and better blended. The dry down is a nice subtle vanilla, powdery, and lavender scent. IMO very similar the the original le male DNA but a lot higher quality and better blended. Although it’s comparable to le male id say it’s a very unique smelling fragrance. Not very loud I wouldn’t wear this going out to a party or club. If it weren’t for the price this would easily be my go to everyday scent super versatile and easy to wear in all seasons considering this scent is on the softer more intimate side. Overall this is probably the best scent in my growing collection it’s something about how unique it is and I’m a fan of the le male DNA so for me it’s a no brainer. I’d say this is a safe blind buy (but for this kind of price I’d suggest sampling if you can) very mass appealing and even if you don’t love this scent I’m sure you’d appreciate the quality.

What a beautiful fragrance! To me, it feels like it takes inspiration from Dior Homme Intense and Black Tie, two true pillars of modern perfumery. It opens with a dry, woody iris that gradually melts into a rich, creamy vanilla base. Then, out of nowhere, a sweet toasted sesame note appears, blending seamlessly with everything that came before and creating an absolutely killer combination. The sesame fades after a while, leaving behind a powdery, sweet, and creamy base. Depending on the temperature and how far someone is from you, one facet may stand out more than the others. It’s incredibly comforting yet playful at the same time. Addictive. It’ll have people wanting to eat your neck. I don’t agree with the general talking about its longevity. On my skin, it easily lasts 12 hours. That said, it never becomes intrusive, it stays as a beautiful aura around you, exactly how I like my fragrances. Fantastic. 🐘

This is one of my most reached-for perfumes. I’ve seen a lot of people say it’s easy to wear, creamy, and comforting. But that’s not my experience of it. It’s half comforting, half nerve-jangling, and that tension is what I like about it. The combination of iris and sesame gives this a nutty, slightly acrid quality. It has the same effect on my nervous system as someone hitting a high note on a piano over and over again. I can’t relax; it keeps demanding my attention. But on the other end of the piano, someone’s playing a conventionally classical piece: layered, melodic, without any sharp edges. That’s the vanilla and woods, soothing my nervous system even as the high note on the other end makes me sit up in my seat. Maybe that makes the perfume sound ... bad? I don't mean it that way. I mean, it contains just enough juxtaposition to keep me engaged, but also feels simple enough for everyday wear.

I find most of the Portrait's collection underwhelming, but Mr. Thompson is absolute fire. My personal favorite from the line so far. It has that distinct opening of lavender, pepper and elemi that's straight from Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb (EdT). Buttery and powdery orris root joins the blend, reminiscent of fragrances like Amouage Reflection Man until it all settles on a rich, creamy base of sesame milk and vanilla to give it that slight gourmand edge to round off the aromatics and spice. It smells elegant, dapper and quite inviting. This fragrance would go well with a slightly dressed up look and shines during the colder seasons.

Penhaligons is my favorite house, and i love their portraits collection, this is another amazing fragrance that’s not too strong and obnoxious! Very dynamic! So well blended too, you get the creamy iris and sweet vanilla with lot’s of depth, i love the dry down, such a smooth fragrance. As a fragrance collector, i’m so happy that the quality of the juice really reciprocates the quality of the bottle! The price is steep, but the exclusive luxury nature of the brand makes it worthwhile for me. Beware, a lot of fakes have been circulating the web of the portraits collection. It’s best to buy from an authorized retailer

Oh! I love The Omniscient Mr Thompson! The marketing target from the Penhaligon's is set for men but this is definitely more suitable for female in my opinion. In fact, a seller at Penhaligon's in England also says it's nice on female as well. The perfumer is Ms. Fanny Bal who learned under Master Perfumer M. Dominique Ropion. This gentleness of the scent expression describes well the top notch french touch in the scent. This is definitely suitable wearing it at offices or business occasion. I am female and not at all regretting having this bottle. And the elephant cap is also cute!🐘🏁🔑 ✨

I'm so happy it's a love for me! I can see how some people say it smells like Dior Homme Intense but only in the beginning. I also have Guerlain's Iris Torrefie and this does not smell like it. Very peppery, and i feel it's quite lactonic as well, and i definitely get the sesame too. Sweeter than i expected, the dry down almost reminds me of sweetened condensed milk. If I am being honest I was gonna buy this regardless of the scent due to my love of elephants 🙂. This is definitely NOT for Everyone! The pepper and sesame can be overbearing for some. Unisex leaning fem IMO

Reminds me of Dior Homme Intense alright, but the cardamom and sesame makes this veer more gourmand, with a toasted nuttiness which I love. Like others have noted Mr Thompson is not a strong perfume and tends to fade out, but in cold weather it lasts well and reappears unexpectedly long after I think it's gone. The animal head cap appeals to kids, not to me, and makes the bottle annoyingly heavy and bulky - admittedly if I had fewer perfumes/more storage space I probably would enjoy the quirky packaging more. Perfectly unisex but I'm keeping this for myself.

This is my favourite penhaligons fragrance oat and I will tell you why. I can amazing this fragrance being worn by a mature man in his 20’s and it is a really mature iris scent with a wonderful gourmand-like dry down because of the vanilla and woody notes. I personally think for the price tag your getting your moneys worth for the smell but the performance is quite disappointing for the £235 your paying. Overall this is a great fragrance and my favourite penhaligons. Longevity 7/10 Sillage 7/10 Smell 9.4/10 Bottle 9.9/10 How much I would pay. 75ml: £180

Despite being omniscient, Mr.Thompson is quite the curious creature. To some he is this beautiful Iris beast, powdery and subtle. To others he is a gourmand king, vanilla and sesame ruling over all. For me he is the latter and I love him for it. On my skin Mr.Thompson is a warm vanilla and sesame bomb, garnering me compliments and the oh so loved 'What are you wearing?' well after 6 hours of wear time. I was originally attracted to Mr.Thompson for the cap alone as I love elephants, but I'm glad I love the inside as much as I love the outside.

Very cutesy, very demuresy. Very demurch, elegant, and feminine! I'm sorry this is too tender to be for a man. At least I would say it's unisex because of the amount of vanilla it has and very light wood. But I get you, the brand is english, they like it natural and very tender. Anyways, beautiful for the night. Dark, warm, you can definitely feel the resine. Not sticky oil. Just perfect. It defo has it's own identity. I never felt the lavender in such a sofisticated way. It's there giving clean little touches. Such a beautiful fragrance.

I really enjoy this. This is my 3rd time wearing it and I like it more each time. Opens with alot of pepper. I love that the sesame comes through and brings this toasty nutty element. The lavender bring a clarity to the overall scent that it needs. The orris is strong and for me is the main player with vanilla playing a background role. It does lean a bit masculine (I think it’s marketed for men) but I don’t care. Very balanced perfume with alot of character. Really beautiful on a chilly rainy afternoon.

When I smell this I envision the color purple. Purple iris and a soothing sweet purple lavender. You also get a slight savory/ nutty note from the sesame. But everything is blended so well it comes together as a soft, comforting milkshake of vanilla, powdery iris, sesame and a little pink pepper sitting on a woodsy base. This can definitely be worn at night before bed or any time you want to be cozy. Soft projection and subtle lasting power. It could also be a signature scent (if you can afford it lol)

This is a gorgeous perfume made with high quality ingredients, everything smells natural and not synthetic. This is so well blended, not one note completely sticks out from the rest except maybe vanilla. I get a beautiful rich vanilla mixed with lavender and iris, the sesame and wood make it creamy and also add a little depth. . Overall it’s a comforting experience to wear, there are no sharp notes, it is very smooth. Moderate projection but very long lasting. I only have a 10 ML and I’m savoring it.

Creamy Iris. I don't really get a super noticeable vanilla note, but more of a caramelised one. It develops from this to a more spiced mode (Cardamom). Makes me feel it's made for formal situations. Something nobility would wear in the past days. Sadly longevity is not that good on skin for me. Used for a couple of days in the cold and maybe reached the 5-6 hours. Stays on clothes longer though. Is it similar to DH Parfum? From someone who has it as signature for formal ocassions, Hell no.
