EN. The Tragedy of Lord George by Penhaligon’s is a truly unique fragrance, capable of surprising me every time I wear it. Its trail is impossible to predict in advance: each time it seems to transform into an entirely new perfume. I often catch myself thinking, “Did I really put on Lord George today, or did I pick another bottle from my 265 fragrances?” It’s precisely this unpredictability that makes the fragrance so captivating and never boring. Personally, I find it completely senseless to divide niche fragrances into male and female categories, and even more so to label this particular scent as exclusively masculine. In my opinion, it is a magnificent unisex creation, perfect for anyone who appreciates elegance and refinement in warm, enveloping, and slightly sweet compositions that never become banal. It is undoubtedly one of my favorite fragrances from the Portraits line, precisely because of its ability to constantly change and reveal itself anew on the skin. It’s definitely worth trying, especially if you enjoy perfumes that can surprise even the most demanding connoisseurs. IT. Mi capita spesso di pensare: “Ma oggi ho davvero messo Lord George, o ho scelto un altro flacone tra i miei 265 profumi?” È proprio questa imprevedibilità che rende il profumo così affascinante e mai banale. Personalmente considero totalmente insensato dividere i profumi di nicchia in categorie maschili e femminili, e ancor più etichettare questa fragranza come esclusivamente maschile. A mio parere, è uno splendido unisex, perfetto per chi apprezza l’eleganza e la raffinatezza di composizioni calde, avvolgenti e leggermente dolci, che non scadono mai nella banalità. È senza dubbio uno dei miei profumi preferiti della linea Portraits, proprio per la sua capacità di mutare costantemente e svelarsi sulla pelle in modi sempre nuovi. Da provare assolutamente, soprattutto se amate i profumi capaci di sorprendere anche i palati più esigenti.

I love this, I can totally see why this is one of the best selling Portraits. Second Penhaligon's I purchased a sample for from their website and I like this a lot, way more than Fortuitous Finley. I get a sweet, woody and powdery barbershop scent, extremely likeable and quite masculine despite its sweetness. As it dries down it becomes more powdery but I don't mind it at all, it smells amazing. My mom and my sister also really liked the scent. It reminded me a bit of Creed's Original Santal, one of my all time favorites, but that one has sandalwood, it's more floral, a bit spicier and less barbershoppy as a result. I'm definitely comparing them side by side when I get my Original Santal decants. Performance was quite poor overall but, much like with Fortuitous Finley, my review of its performance might not be the most accurate as the sample's atomizer is really bad and so it's hard to replicate fragrance application as if you had a full bottle or even a decant with a proper atomizer. Longevity wasn't great, the scent was pretty much completely gone 5 hours after applying it, but to be fair I spent around 30-40 minutes inside a hot car with the air con hitting me, so obviously that's going to play into longevity. Projection and sillage were pretty bad, I could barely smell the scent after applying it and it doesn't seem people around me could pick it up at all, even right after applying it and standing close to them. As a result I'd say sillage and projection are nonexistent, but I think I'll have to "overspray" if I want to gauge these characteristics adequately. I'm unsure if I might have gone nose blind to it immediately, but usually in those cases I have a hard time smelling the fragrance even when I'm smelling it directly on my skin. As it stands, I'd really love to own this fragrance but, if performance is this poor in general, I can't justify spending around $220 for it (discounter price after taxes and importing costs).

I once made fun of Penhaligon's on facebook (in a paid advertisement of theirs that came across my newsfeed no less) for being overpriced and very limited in their product offerings compared to Taylor of Old Bond Street. After some back and forth with a few users, I relented and ordered a few samples of Penhaligon's fragrances, and of the ones I ordered... this was my favorite. I have gotten more compliments out of people over this fragrance than anything else I own. Men, women, young and old, I have yet to meet anybody that does not like this fragrance. I let a coworker of mine take a whiff of the sample, she got a bit of it on her hands, and she loved the smell of it so much she proceeded to rub her neck and hands down with it. I thought she was going to clobber me for the rest of the vial. Needless to say, I don't make fun of Penhaligon's anymore. I may have to pick up a second job or figure out how to sell a kidney on the black market, but once I get the financing part figured out, there will be a bottle of this in my small collection of fragrances eventually.

Not too shabby for my first Penhaligon’s. The notes unfold like a well-tailored suit—gentlemanly and poised, evoking the kind of refined charm you’d expect from a fictional noble sipping brandy at a polo club. That’s the imagery it paints for me, anyway. The amber really takes center stage here, and I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. Amber is a note I typically associate with women’s fragrances, so encountering it in this context was like discovering a new side to an old story—refreshing and intriguing. It’s warm but never cloying, grounding the composition with just the right amount of elegance. What’s more, this scent feels versatile and approachable, perfect for navigating the demands of work or school without feeling out of place. It’s the kind of fragrance that doesn’t shout but subtly reminds people you’ve got your act together. If my first foray into Penhaligon’s is anything to go by, I think I’m starting to fall for this house. Lord George might be a tragedy by name, but wearing it feels like anything but. Bravo, Penhaligon’s.

When I first started getting into fragrances this one caught my eye but I could not find it anywhere. Apparently, it was only available in a single shop in the whole city and that was really far away from me. However, after a really long time I found it, oh boy have I found it. When you first smell it, it feels like you know what it is, it is familiar but when you start to look around, you find yourself in the 19. century England. You get confused and start looking around. Suddenly you realise, you are not wearing your favourite hoodie, you have a suit and a coat on. The coat reminds you of the weather, oh boy, it sure is getting colder now. Someone across the street waves at you and when you raise your hand you realise, you also have a cane in your hand. As you are taking a look at your cane someone bumps into you, hard, and after you both apologize he compliments your cologne and you remember, you just left the barber and the guy smelled the aftershave on you. You politely lower your head and say "I am much obliged to you, farewell". 9/10

I first had this bottle in 2022, and now another bottle in 2026. In early batches the juice was slightly lighter and the brandy was so faint it was hardly there, but I feel like they fixed that part. Opens with green mossy +metallic vibe with cold lavender and woods combination. After that you get a shave soap, almost like luxury version of boraxo from back on the school yard. The tonka (thankfully used judiciously) warms up the chill a bit, from that soapy cold texture. A hidden ingredient here is heath which grows wild on British sand dunes and I think that really sets it apart. Outstanding barber shop fragrance that I purchase even though I know the performance isn't great. The juice is worth the squeeze if you LOVE soapy barbershop fragrances IMO. This fragrance, often described as a traditional scent for a lord or gentleman, carries the allure of a modern Fougere style. In my experience, this fragrance leans more towards an oriental woody profile with a distinctly European / British style. I didn’t quite detect the shaving soap or the expected Fougere elements. Instead, what captivated me was the exceptionally refined and elegant amber essence. The blend of notes is so sophisticated; it’s a rarity in the world of fragrances. The vanilla is seamlessly matched with the amber and woody undertones, maintaining a distinctly masculine edge. This will be my top recommendation if you’re considering adding just one amber woody fragrance to your collection. It’s truly a masterpiece of refinement and style. 9/10

This is a lovely fall fragrance. It's warm, woody, ambery, and the vanilla accord has a welcome, solid presence without being that sweet. I often dislike vanilla, so if you do too, just know that it's not sugary here. It's coming from the tonka, which is vanilla's flatter, less sweet cousin. The primary note for me is that tonka bean and the amber, but the woody notes darken it a bit and the cognac gives it a bit of life without being boozy. Overall, this scent is smooth, mature, cozy, and just a little sexy. I honestly feel like this is a unisex fragrance; I have no problem wearing it as a woman. I understand the reviews saying it's nice but nothing innovative, and while I tend to agree, it's executed very well. Whether it's worth the money to you is a different question, but it's undeniably a good fragrance. Worth picking up a decant, in my opinion, and adding this cozy cool weather scent to your roster. 8.5/10.

This is an excellently executed fragrance, more masculine, very woody and heavy on tonka beans, with some dry booze. The Tragedy of Lord George is different than what I have or tested. It’s a rather simple note structure: woods, tonka, cognac and amber but it smells very elegant, elevated and stylish. It has an obvious pleasant scent and quite broad mass appeal, and the more it dries down on my skin, the more it makes me think it’s actually a perfume I would love to wear, as a female. It’s smooth, woody, boozy and sweet, ambery and warm. I can see it as a fantastic fall season scent, it gives me cozy vibes. Again, the ratio between performance and high pricing makes me hesitant to recommend it wholeheartedly, but if money isn’t a concern for you, I would suggest The Tragedy of Lord George as a phenomenal autumn scent for both genders actually.

This is the best perfume I’ve ever had. It’s surprising that less impressive scents are popular while this diamond goes unnoticed (may be thats good - every other person dont use it ). I’ve received so many compliments and been asked what I’m wearing that I literally died from all the attention, came back to life, and wrote this review. The smell never gets annoyng, even though it’s long-lasting with a strong sillage. It doesn’t smell distinctly sweet, citrusy, fresh, or woody—just something that feels both spicy and fresh at the same time. I discovered it after catching a whiff of it on someone else and instantly decided it would be my scent for the foreseeable future, once I tracked it down. Love at first sniff. It smells amazing on men, women, and all gender-fluid individuals, and even if you spray it on objects, it’ll suit them too.

Honestly this stuff is freaking great I absolutely love it, I get people have different tastes but I can’t understand some of the hate this gets. Luxurious, dry, earthy, green woods with just a hint of brandy, and I know it isn’t in the notes but I get a creamy background, like a vintage shaving foam of some sort. Performance is good for the first 3-4hrs, I did leave a scent trail at work and received compliments - told twice I smelt delightful! Yes, the performance does tail off after this but it does stay all day albeit more intimate and close to the skin. I sprayed on my neck and I’m still getting subtle whiffs off the collar of my jacket 3 days later. If you’re into loud, modern, mass appealing scents then this won’t be for you. But if you appreciate quiet luxury and vintage scents, then you’re in for an absolute treat.

immediately boozy and rich, it immediately FLOODS the bubble of personal space and the room becomes overwhelmingly warm. there is a persistently clean "green" note, like pepper leaves beneath the oaky booze of the top note. it smells like being lost in the forest as the sun is setting, your stomach churning a bit from the depth of the wood. the underlying "clean" soapy smell is almost clinical, metallic and unfamiliar. a very well-groomed man at the grocery store who makes you question your life decisions for leaving home in slouchy pajamas. after about two hours, it melts into a slowly simmered spicy caramel, a slightly-purple bruise. coming home to the heater running in the cold days of autumn

I like it. From the first whiff it screams ‘Olde Time’ and I am whisked away to a realm of giraffes and wildebeest sitting in leather embossed swivel chairs as a well dressed hippopotamus shaves their ragged chins with a strait razor. Everything about this scent screams 1800’s and if you weren’t there the first time, you certainly will be after imbibing the smooth, soapy fragrance. Perfect for distinguished gentlemen, gadflys, or men about towne, there is nothing here that is suitable for young roustabouts, ruffians, or ragamuffins. This is the scent of Sweeny Todd, Wuthering Heights, and The Prestige. My young daughter said it gave her a headache. I rate it 4/5 stars.

Today's the second time I'm meeting Lord George and I have mixed feelings. I fell in love when I first tried it in a show room, but when I got a collection of samples it feels a bit different. Not as rich and potent as the full bottle sample. It doesn't stay on me for long. Approx 3 hours to wear off, then I need to reapply it. It starts off sharp, then becomes sweeter and more subtle. Still a great and sophisticated perfume. It's the first time when I vote for full bottles against discovery sets. It's pricey, but for those who can afford it in my honest opinion it's worth it. P.s. my colleagues say I smell like a Don Juan.

ok this is reminding me of something from my childhood. I like it a lot. It is making me think of those vintage Rawleigh Salve tins we always had in the bathroom cupboard, although to be clear, not because this smells like ointment, it doesn't, it's just somehow triggering this memory. I think this is due to the hint of old school barbershop aftershave. Unisex but more masculine, I love it but not a good blind buy. I would love to smell this on a man but I happen to really like vintage men's colognes "grandpa scents" like kouros etc. If a man rocked up to a date wearing this I would be very impressed.

This is my favourite fragrance of all time. It's so unique, and addictive. This is not your typical fougere. Is it mature? Yes. Some people might get a "grandpa" vibe from it. But to me it's such an elegant, uplifting and classy fragrance. I love wearing this one with a suit and a long black trench coat. It's so good, it has an almost petrichor-earthy facet to it which makes it dark and mysterious. One of the few fragrances I can give a 10/10 to. The only note I get from the notes listed here is the woods. No vanilla or Tonka bean at all. Maybe just a little bit of an ambery sweetness in the dry down.

One of my favorite hypermasculine scents. 1800s men's club feels right to me - boozy, barbershop-y, and masculine. Smells a bit like shaving cream but I love that, and this is the best "shaving cream" fragrance I've tried. My only issue is it doesn't last as long as you'd think it would for being a woody, barbershop fragrance. I only get about 4 hours. But what you sacrifice in longevity you gain in scent - I bet if they made it longer lasting it would come across too strong or synthetic. It's a perfect scent for what it is trying to do.

Very nice fragrance, probably in the top 5 penhaligon's offering for men. What I get is a beautiful prominent shaving foam with a noticeable support of brandy and a hint of tonka. I get 0 amber. Not sure where that comes from. A great perfume, that said not worth full retail price. If looking for a barbershop fragrance, I'd suggest going for the beautiful Penhaligon's Sartorial, YSL Rive Gauche, Chanel Egoiste Platinum or MMM At The Barber's instead, which all retail for 3-4 times less, and are all great choices. Purchased a sample and I really like it, smells very clean and sophisticated, gentlemanly. However I did not want to pay the full price on a bottle, so I checked ebay and bought from a seller with a high 97% rating from China. The bottle came in (batch code 429333) and it does not smell the same as the sampler. The bottle almost seems like its missing that sweet note, maybe the amber? It just smells like barbershop even after sitting for 4-5 months. It's not terrible just not what i was expecting based off the sampler

Another stunning classic from Penhaligons. After getting my bottle, I was just wondering who would be the creator of this amazing masterpiece, and its none other than Alberto Morillas !! The one behind all the wonderful BVLGARIS (BLV, Man Extreme, Man in Black, Black Cologne....) and not to forget all the Acqua di Gios and ADP Colonia Intensa. I mentioned the Bvlgaris because you get whiffs of many of them in this "Lord George". This is such a beauty !! Longevity may not be that great, but I am not worried about it.

This has been my husband's signature scent since it was launched. It opens woody and slightly aromatic; my nose picks up a rich and slightly soapy shaving cream note. As it dries, it becomes sweeter, and I can smell amber with slightly aromatic woods. The drydown is absolutely gorgeous: slightly sweet, a touch boozy, slightly creamy but elegant, nothing like some of those vanilla/boozy "beast" perfumes currently around. It is a very masculine and sophisticated perfume. I love it; I find it incredibly comforting.

This fragrance is absolutely beautiful. The boozy woody ambery notes gives of a sophisticated masculine vibe that leans dark and mysterious. I would probably say it leans towards being overpriced considering longevity and projection. However, the smell makes it 100% worth it as I have never smelled anything resembling it. As for the comparisons to lunna Rossa black, I don’t see the similarity at all. I get amber from both but they are done in completely different ways and are not redundant of each other

Out of the six perfumes in the portraits collection this is by far my favorite. Another commenter talked about it smelling like paternal live and old libraries and I think that is a perfect description. Even as a girl I still think that out of all of them this one is the one I would find myself wearing. It has a lovely smell and it really brings the character to life . the notes mix beautifully especially the Amber which does not take over like it tends to do. 10/10 would recommend.

Reminds me of the Indian barbershops I frequented as a child and a classy scent that hints of a clean, well groomed gentleman. My current favourite fougère, and because it doesn't scream loudly like most modern male perfumes nor is it cloyingly sweet in any way, its refined scent allows me to wear it anytime of the day, even in this hot and humid weather I live in. Lovely! It does have a bit of a rough/dirty edge to it, and I like it even more.

If you can get this fragrance on a discounter for between 160 and 200 dollars and you have tried it before I would recommend getting it. In my opinion this fragrance is a masterpiece, I love the smell and the quality is undeniable. This is how I want to smell all the time, my other fragrances would never get used if this wasn't 200 dollars and I didn't want to use it so quickly. Another banger by Alberto. 10/10 smell

First Penhaligon's I've had, liked it because it plays a little heavier with the lavender on me, and I just love it balances out with the boozy and woody aspects of the scent, definitely a classy one. Would buy again but it has Yellow and Blue dyes and I can't risk to use them anymore due to allergies. Lasting power is OK, moderate Sillage. Quality mature-leaning composition. Too many dyes though.

The perfect scent to go out in colder weather. Moderately sweet and woody with both balancing eachother instead of one being the main star and the other embodied it. Not much to write about because there's nothing impressive about it, just a very safe profile and it did it job very well. An iconic one, the first comes to mind when you think of its profile. Subtle but luxurious.

Just here to say that one of the “Cons” states “Not as complex as it sounds”. It only has 4 notes and 5 accords. How complex can you expect it to be? People are slow. Smh. With that being said, this is going to be one of my main grabs for autumn and winter. You can’t go wrong with this at all. Only downside is it does not perform that well.

I got this really cheap (considering the price tag) from a friend. I love it and it's my first of many Penhaligons I will own. The performance is slightly below average but some people might enjoy this about it. I do not think it is worth the retail price so I won't repurchase but I still love it.

An elegant brandy and wood fragrance for every day. I feel herbal and a little sweetness in it. An expensive perfume but also it's like an expensive men's shaving care. I see it in the cold season on men. Although I like to wear it too, and if I want to add sweetness, I wear Clandestine Clara

The bottle lured me in, not gonna lie. It just looked like something that NBC Hannibal would wear, and I just had to try it. I was pleasantly surprised! Very rich, boozy amber with a hint of sweetness, sophisticated, classy and I thoroughly enjoy it every time I wear it

Smells like a sweet brandy in a wood barrel. Projection and longevity are alright around 6 hours. I would only wear this on a day with snow of the ground and you want to give off the vibe of a middle aged millionaire. Layer this with absolute aphrodisiac trust me 😮💨

Sublime...I love it on my boyfriend, as much as I love it on me. I have never smelt anything similar. Clean, musky, ambery, warm, woody, sweet (in a good, tonka bean'y way) - all at the same time... DIVINE

The scent itself is amazing, very masculine and classy without even trying. The issue is that even at discounters this is $200+ and the longevity and sillage off of my skin are extremely lacking.

I keep coming back to this sample in the Portrait Library Discovery Set. Barbershop type scent, loving it in the winter and cold rainy days.

Spectacular smell but barely lasts 2-3h on my skin. Such a shame, one of the most enjoyable fragrancies I have ever tried.
