Smoke

Beautiful! This is the best smoky. spicy. woodsy cent I have ever smelled. The smoke here is similar to the type of smoke found in Trudon Revolution (also by Lyn Harris) but is toned down into more like a background incense, which pushes it from being in-your-face annoying to sublime. The woodsiness, the spiciness, and the amberly sweetness intertwined into an incredibly classy scent cloud. The agarwood is the star of this perfume. The scent has aspects of the highest quality agarwood. An image of an ancient wood temple filled with agarwood incense appears in my mind. I smelled this on paper and had to order a FB immediately. A masterpiece if you ask me! UPDATE (05/14/2024): The bottle is here! I now detect notes of earthiness that I did not detect on paper. I also see similarities with Aesop Hwyl. The resinous earthiness is the commonality between the two. While Aesop Hwyl has the green, minty foreground, Perfumer H Smoke has the ambery spicy smoky foreground. They are the same genre but go in different directions. Smoke is a bit more refined and addictive though! lol

Smoke is in the database at last! A sublime incense masterpiece. Opening with dry, bookish woods, musky angelica (should be in the notelist) and benzoin resin, with birch tar smoke and soft, subtle oud rising. The angelica soon fades and a beautiful rounded olibanum emerges sweetened and darkened with camomile and dried rose, like a plume of fresh smoke from a woodland campfire or a temple's incense burner. Extraordinarily beautiful. Stopping you in your tracks. Then gently subsiding again into the aromatic woody notes and spices, the benzoin holding it back from ever becoming too dry. A woody, rosy incense with a lick of leatheriness. I merely liked this on the blotter but I totally swooned for it on skin. I keep the handblown bottle by my bed. Every perfume lover needs to smell this. One of the greats.

This is my most favourite smell in the world - even moreso than Rosa Mystica at mass. I try to be sparing with this, but I end up wearing it every single day - it's quite spenny, but is most definitely worth it. Whenever I go out, people compliment me on the fragrance; I should be on commission with the amount of people I've directed to Lyn's shop. An incense, amber, woody with a lick of floral, and a lasting impression. Purchasing a bottle from the original shop/workshop in Marylebone, I was made to feel the most important person in the world. I described the kind of scents I liked, and the lovely lady walked me through three or four scents she thought would match me. As with BeardedIris below, I thought it was brilliant on paper, but on my skin it took on an entirely new life!

This was a very rare blind buy success for me. Smoke has quickly become one of my favorites of all time! The olibanum and birch tar combo is divine and not at all overpowering. Meditative, soft, mysterious, and sultry. I will be wearing this all autumn and winter long. Perfumer H is such a great brand! Her scents make me long for a time before "beast mode" and before the superamber forever nose-piercing aromachemical onslaught. These fragrances remind us of what is possible in perfumery when less is more and when subtlety is allowed.

Stunningly beautiful. I tried several Perfumer H fragrances and this was the only one that blew me away. Despite the name it's not very smoky, nor is it overly churchy - just the perfect dose of ambery, resinous frankincense with a touch of spice and floral sweetness. I don't get any oud at all. This price should be enough to put me off, but this is going on my list regardless. Masterpiece!

So good. Smokey yet feminine with a *light* touch of rose

Smoke is not what you might think given the name, there's many different ways to evoke the feeling of smoke but niche and trendy perfume brands will try to bombard you with overly smoky birch, cade and guaiac fragrances. That's cool if that's what you like but the overdose for me often seems like it's covering for the fact it's not a very good perfume. Anyway.... This is a cool then warm, breezy incense affair which doesn't follow any kind of trope, but also without being anything too out there. It has a wafting, underlying sense of smoke, and that's what makes it a winner for me. I suppose I get the resins, olibanum, labdanum, galbanum listed here but in truth this is a true accord of incense, without a one of those being too prominent. I honestly went into trying this brand with the usual bright eyed enthusiasm I normally display and even a touch of bias because I find Lyn Harris to be a very good perfumer indeed. There's always a respect for the composition, knowing what's best, complexity and depth but with a less is more and a great sense of knowing when a perfume is finished. I thought it was excellent, shame the price point is so high (again not a critique) because they are a little out of my price range and this certainly wasn't my favourite of the three I managed to try.

Smells close to Shalimar and extremely similar to Comme des Garcons' "Black". There is also a similarity to Oudh Palao (Diptyque), but without the dirtiness and Bulgarian rose. Perfumer H's "Smoke" is olibanum and birch straight out of the bottle! Not like all the other fragrances that are only faintly reminiscent of incense or birch. I appreciate Smoke as a grown-up incense fragrance next to Shalimar, but this one fades way too soon- at least on my skin. 7/10 because of the weak longevity.

Very amber and resinous sweet (contrary to what one might expect from the name). It's an incense or benzoin smoke rather than a forest or chimney fire. Very papier d'arménie, to my nose.

Opens coriander-galbanum, then the olibanum appears, then the benzoin note appears after, propped next to a cedar. Eventually, it settles into a woodsy cedar with an amber bias. It’s a slightly more sophisticated version of Black Lacquer/Red Colorado, but this is marketed as a smoky frag—the amber feels out of place...but I don’t mind it. This doesn't really come off as smoky but more like the smell you get from cutting wood. Keep in mind Red Colorado can be had for about the same price AT MSRP for twice the quantity, and it sits at half the price at discounters...it's the same scent profile minus the amber.

unnecessary benzoin note in my opinion. 5/10

Perhaps I got a dodgy sample, but this was bland and one note on me. It simply smelled of, you guessed it, smoke! No spices, no incense, no wood, just plain old smoke. Next time I’ll stand by the fire to perfume myself...

I remain astonished that nobody has ever asked me what I'm wearing when I wear Smoke. It just goes to show that most people have the discernment of a battered sausage. Lyn Harris is an interesting perfumer in that she works in subtle layers. There is nothing ostentatious about her compositions, they are perfectly English scents for the grey skies and green fields of Blighty. Smoke is a nuanced interpretation of an incense frag, but it isn't Catholic. This is the kind of lingering incense scent you might conceivably find on an old tweed coat often worn to a Guy Fawkes bonfire. It whispers wealth rather than screams money. There is an underlying sweetness to it that reminds me of kiln dried firewood- the sap congealed in an amber bubble along a crack. Imagine sitting in front of a fire in a former great house. The owners have fallen on hard times due to impecunious forefathers and are forced to lodge peasants like you. There is a shabbiness to the upholstered furniture and the air is still and dusty. You can almost hear the nasty back biting conversations of long dead aristocrats gossiping about their neighbours' misfortune, awash in schadenfreude. That's sort of what wearing Smoke feels like.

Think Blamage church like smoke accord, without the woods, strong, yes bit feminine but in a resins Birch tar type way, somber opening, ritualistic, gets peppery and brings to warmth as progresses. Loveing the Perfumer Hs more and more, just each so well banaced.

Absolutely love every scent by Lynn Harris. She is pure creative genius, scents are all unisex, tasteful. Simply the best!
