Hanami

Hanami is a very interesting offering from Phlur. It looks like it would be a very simple sandalwood scent by the notes listed. But, it actually has a lot of character to it. Yes, it has a nice synthetic sandal wood note in it. But, it is paired with a lovely candied fig note. That fig also opens up with a now noticeable orange note. The florals in this fragrance give it a fem nature. But, this can be pulled off my a man all day. It has a lot of depth to it and is very pleasant. I didn't get good performance from the sample that I had but, once I got a full bottle of it. I started to notice that the performance was a lot better than I expected. I am easily getting 7-8 hours with a about a foot or two projection for 4 hours. It projects even more when applied to skin. I absolutely adore this fragrance, I am a sucker for fig. Hanami is an excellent take on that note. But, with that being said. This is also a very nice sandalwood fragrance that would cater to you sandalwood lovers. Btw, Phlur is an amazing brand, their ideals of giving back to their sources in terms of acquiring their natural notes as well as their views of environmental awareness is second to none. Not to mention, the people at Phlur are amazing people who are so helpful. I am a big fan of this brand and I would praise them to anyone as well as recommend their fragrances to people. Hanami may be one of their more simple fragrances, but their offerings such as Sandara show that this brand has a ton of creativity to them. Try out Phlur, you wont be disappointed.

Leaving this here in memory of what used to be my very favorite scent; that has since been reformulated and then finally discontinued. When I first tested this, it left little impression. But I dug the sample back out, testing it a few more times. I ended up buying PHLUR's Sandara instead — only to discover (realize?) that it did in fact smell a bit like 'dirt' on me (an honest comment from my husband, and we both laughed about it). I took a chance, and impulsively bought a full bottle of Hanami after experiencing fragrance memories of it. When I got that bottle, and I took the cap off, I immediately smelled the orange peel oil, and the hazelnut. When I spritzed it on my wrist, I literally said, wow. It was fresh, but rich, tart and juicy. A little aquatic, a little floral... really, it was every note ever in a fragrance, in the best way. On my skin, anyway. I got compliments galore whenever I'd wear it. I bought the body wash and lotion. I went through several bottles of it. It was my trusty companion. It wore so well on me. Then, PHLUR shifted gears in a completely different direction. I was optimistic at first — until I bought Hanami and it didn't smell the same. It was heavier, rougher and the brightness of the orange tartness was gone. I tried to wear that bottle, but ended up letting it go. One more time, I tried to buy Hanami again; and again, it wasn't the same thing I used to love. So long, lovely Hanami. You were gorgeous.

this perfume smells like the comforting hippie lady at your local rec center that probably drives a 2006 honda accord and definitely volunteers to teach the pottery classes - handing out fresh veggies from her garden as a parting gift at the end of summer classes. she wears long flowy skirts and her outfits are made of bright colors, handwoven textiles, and antique patterns. woody and comforting, hanami is reminiscent of fresh wood and spiced hot tea - the scent of her wrapping you up into a big hug, or the scent that you smell as soon as you step over the threshold and into her home. practically a bottled reminder that regardless of how dark and horrid winter gets, there's always a warm and comforting place to escape to - even if it's just on your wrist.

Man, I don’t know what people are smelling, but this to me is a perfect scent, signature worthy. Elegant, warm, creamy and clean, with zero bumps during opening or dry down. Just beautiful and easy to wear. I don’t have a sophisticated nose and cannot identify individual notes, just a perfectly unified blend of high quality ingredients. This review is based on the original white bottle, I’m praying they did not change the formulation in the new version. I will be so bummed. Side note: despite none of the notes matching, this is pretty close to Jo Malone wood Sage and sea salt. I like Hanami better, it’s softer, creamier and a tiny bit sweeter.

This is the first Phlur sample I have tried, and I am in love! I am new to exploring perfume and am finding that I really love fig. On me, this fragrance is creamy, figgy and warm and spicy (the spice from the sandalwood, I assume). It's cozy, but light, so I think it works for all seasons. This reminds me of Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt and smells almost exactly like the new summer edition of Philosophy Pure Grace called Summer Moments. It is a more intense version. I got this in Sephora's new clean fragrance sampler, and without even trying any of the others yet, I am almost positive this will be the travel spray I trade in my voucher for.

A few years back I ordered some Phlur samples for myself before visiting my family for Christmas. To my surprise, my mom (who could not be less interested in perfume usually) surprised me a week later with a full size bottle of Hanami because she said it smelled so good on me. It's not my favorite all-time scent, but it's lovely and comforting...especially in the winter. Somehow I'd never actually looked at Hanami's fragrance notes until today and was surprised how off-base my nose has been all these years! To me, it smells like equal parts coconut, fig, and salt. But a quick Ctrl-F for "coconut" on this page tells me I'm alone on that one!

Do NOT judge this scent from the initial spray! It reminded me of some sort of rancid Gucci Memoire (I have no explanation for this), but oh my god... the drydown is intoxicating. The citrus scent is gone completely in 5-10 minutes on my skin, so all the sharpness fades and I'm left with a beautiful creamy woods. idk how else to explain this but I'm really just in love with Hanami. It's woody, powdery, sweet, and so warm. It's a soft skin scent but I can still smell it on me the next day. I haven't worn another perfume since I bought this last week. If you're a lover of sandalwood and skin scents PLEASE give this a test

UPDATE I've worn this several times in warmer spring weather and enjoy the fragrance significantly more than when it was in the cold of winter. It's very creamy with a brightness from green fig wood and citrus rind with a powdery base. On my chemistry, it leans quite femme. With the exception of the first 30 seconds, the scent is very linear on me. Its subtle but has staying power — I notice it for at least 6 hours and it becomes a skin scent after that. I would say this is a 'you smell good' scent, as compared with 'your perfume smells good' Feels like a chill Sunday afternoon to me.

my favorite from the PHlur line that is now discontinued. this is the fragrance that taught me that I love creamy scents. I was endlessly buying rose scents because I thought that's what I liked, until I got Hanami by sheer luck. Now I know I am a vanilla and creamy scent gal. I will always remember this fragrance and it was one of the first fragrances that really spoke to my heart and made me happy. I wore it for ME, not for others and some of my favorite delightful moments were spraying this perfume on my bed at night before sleeping. I knew it would be a good night!

To me this is a creamy, slightly spicy and earthy sandalwood with a very pronounced woody base. It's gorgeous, unique, definitely "unisex" and "safe" in terms of its projection and notes. It even slightly reminds me of paper and papyrus-based scents. I can see the influence of Santal 33 as well. This sandalwood, however, is not marine nor salty, it does not have any "sweetness" to it unlike the sandalwood in Latin Quarter by Memo. It's not rubbery, synthetic or nauseating at all. It's very smooth and natural kind of sandalwood. I love it.

I have the original. It’s a figgy woody scent. It’s warm but light and would work in all seasons. It dries down to a soft ambery powder while still being fresh and youthful. What happened to Phlur after the rebrand is a travesty. They shouldn’t have discontinued their first fragrances. They were complex and confusing and really opened my eyes to what perfume can create in terms of a mood. Hanami was their flagship and then they changed it, and then discontinued it. I wouldn’t touch this brand with a 10 foot pole at this point.

I’m very sad this is discontinued! This is a lovely cozy and comforting scent. To me, the sandalwood is creamy with a pronounced fuzziness. It’s like being wrapped in a loosely knitted wool cardigan. Tam Dao is more crisp, like a wooden box you’ve just opened. Santal 33 on me is almost entirely a leather scent. The Maison Louis Marie 04 Bois de Balincourt has more of the fresh dill that many people get from it and Santal 33. Hanami is unique and stands on its own.

I like, but am not in love with this fragrance. It’s rather subtle and minimalist — more like “you smell good” than “your perfume smells good” When I bought it, I was hoping for a cosy, soft, warm fragrance... but on my skin, I get a lot of citrus-y sharpness that is ever present. I like it, just not the cozy minimalist snuggle I was seeking. :) I’m curious to try it again in the spring, when the balance of cosy to brightness might feel more appropriate.

I have this in body wash/ lotion form which was gifted to my mother by a friend. My mom is super particular so this ended up in my hands. I absolutely love it. Sandalwood is my all-time favorite note and you definitely get it from this. I also pick up some white florals and aquatic notes. It's beachy but is also strong enough to be good in winter. It is also divinely unisex, it smells fresh and clean and...sexy. I might have to by a bottle :)

I finally had the chance to compare the old formulation with the new one, and I can confirm they are strikingly not the same. The one in the clear bottle lacks the soft creaminess of the original. It’s perfumey and sharp. What an absolute shame, the original one in the white bottle was an absolute masterpiece. So sad. They’re both extinct anyway.

A bright, clean and wispy floral aquatic. Its a soft opening, followed by a rush of bright florals that give way to the aquatic/sandalwood base. Light projection, average performance but still a keeper. This is a unisex fragrance but would much rather smell this on a female. Compliments galore.

I’m really sad this is being discontinued. It it my go to easy autumn fragrance. Slightly sweet but not a gourmand. The hazelnut is the prominent note for me with a woody slightly spicy dry down. Perfect for staying cozy as the leaves fall. Sad to see this one go.

I just ran out of this perfume, and I'm SO sad it's gone. This scent introduced me to fig in perfumes, which is now one of my favorite notes. This is a gorgeous, creamy fig sandalwood woodsy scent. RIP Hanami.

I ADORE this perfume. Please note, the new edition of hanami does NOT smell the same. I’ve tried both. The old edition is very warm, sophisticated, and creamy in my opinion.

I finally managed to find a bottle of the OG formula! This is so good for year round wear. I think this might have surpassed Sandara as my favorite OG Phlur fragrance.

why did they discontinue it’s so much better than half the other Phlur scents :(

I don't know if my bottle's gone off (I've owned it for a couple of years and just found it in my bedroom at my parents' house) but the opening of this is kind of musty and smoky -- but then about a minute in it blooms into this very smoldering, ashy, smoked sandalwood with dried fig and burnt hazelnuts. It's a really dry and woody unisex fragrance, and the fig definitely does a lot to help round it out. I definitely get vetiver from it too, and plenty of it. It smells like it should be worn with a suede trench coat, musty thrift store smell and all. Bohemian but not rank patchouli bohemian. I like it but, expect more of a musty thrift store suede and dried herbs scent than a creamy girly lotiony scent. Still on the fence about whether or to keep it, but only because my collection is growing really expansively.

I thought i was crazy at first! So upon first sniff... I HATED this. It smelled sharp and "off." Then after a few moments it settled, flattened, rounded into a sandalwood that smelled creamy and... nutty? I was definitely getting nuts. Then I visited Phlur's site, and it's listed as an aquatic floral. Uhhh... no, girl. Do I have the wrong sample? Is my sniffer broken? Upon scrolling down, then I see... "fig, white florals, hazelnut, and sandalwood." Ha! Triumph. My nose isn't crazy after all. I knew there were nuts in there! Well. This is a soft unisex sandalwood that has a very sharp opening but then settles into something bordering a creamy gourmand. There are florals lurking in there, but this is a sandalwood soaked in cream and nuts... I think I like it!

Hanami is fantastic creamy skin scent. The only Phlur I have had a chance to try. Fig is possibly my favorite note ever, so this was an instant attraction. Sandalwood and hazelnut are interesting accomplices, this truly smells unisex the way most good fig perfumes tend to. There is said to be white flower notes as well, which also constitutes my favorites, and I guess I can detect it in a dose of feminine sweetness that doesn't smell woody. The lasting power is just ok. I could happily bathe in this on a regular basis, but it's just a little too close to the skin. I like to be able to enjoy my perfumes fully without having to huff my pressure points repeatedly...

This is such a comforting, clean scent. On me, it opens with a bright citrus and fig scent, but very quickly becomes a creamy blend of hazelnut and sandalwood. To me, the hazelnuts are very prominent. They’re not sweet, but just smooth and almost earthy, and the sandalwood lends them a grounded, soothing quality. It’s a scent one could wear anywhere, at any time of year. It’s like the olfactory equivalent of a white button-down shirt. I don’t know what the future holds for a lot of Phlur’s fragrances which I previously enjoyed, like this one, Greylocke, and Ameline. I hope they keep these around even as they rebrand and go viral with their new fragrances!

Nice work-appropriate fragrance, but a little meh. Opens figgy and the sandalwood is apparent throughout. I do like the hazelnut in the middle. The dry-down is soft and little creamy ("white flowers" = some gardenia?). My biggest beef is the lack of longevity. The Phlur website does say it is their lightest scent and should last for about 4-6 hours, but I get maybe 2-3 hours unless I spray a lot more heavily that I normally do. A little disappointed as the company really seems to play up that they spend more on ingredients/quality and making distinctive fragrances in lieu of fancy packaging and aggressive advertising.

I bought this along with some other items on Phlur’s website. It is the travel size and it was half price. This is the second time wearing it and I layered it with Kayali Musk. I love this combo. The Hanami I have is in a clear bottle. I don’t know if it is similar to the original in the white bottle or not as I never tried it. There is no updated clear bottle of this on fragrantica and I don’t remember the notes from Phlur’s page but I really love this. My opinion is that is is unisex and I really don’t know if it is something I will wear alone but it gives an extra umph to my other perfumes.

Hanami was a blind buy for me. The scent is beautiful but it’s almost like a skin scent and doesn’t last very long on me. It a comforting and cozy fragrance that leans slightly masculine. I get a lot of earthiness but that is beautifully balanced with creamy and slightly sweet notes. I find it similar to Fine’ry Before the Rainbow, but Hanami is a bit smoother and sweeter. It’s an “easy reach” kind of scent and it’s subtle. I’m enjoying wearing Hanami but I probably won’t buy it again because the scent is so fleeting on me.

This is definitely a unique perfume. It has a “cool” kind of smell. Not sure if there’s other notes in here that aren’t listed but I’m definitely picking up more than just sandalwood. It’s rather aromatic and almost spa like. Very versatile. Unfortunately, like everything else I’ve tried from Phlur the performance is abysmal. I don’t mind a fragrance that sits close to the skin but I do expect a few hours of longevity. Smell 4/5 Performance 1/5

i have a travel size of this that i mustve picked up ages ago but don't remember buying. from the name i figured it would be more springy and floral, but its a pretty straightforward woody-spicy scent without much else going on. i do like how it smells, but because of how basic it is i don't really ever reach for it on its own. i'm keen to try layering it with other scents and seeing how it performs.

Very complex, reminds me of Ciara perfume from the 70's 80's but without the migraine inducer! Rich dark warm incense type fragrance. Very heavy and seductive. Not one I would wear daily but on a special night out, I would. This needs to be worn with velvet I think.

It's just ok it's light but it smells confusing. Something about this brand, smells like alcohol and takes a few minutes to bring out any notes.

Phlur's description of this as a "minimalist" and "aquatic" fragrance doesn't quite capture Hanami. It's minimal, but no more so than most modern fragrances, and I don't get the aquatic designation at all. While light, it doesn't have the anonymity (to my nose) of those "your skin but better" fragrances that are currently popular. This is substantial and structured. Hazelnut hits me first, then there's a synthetic but creamy sandalwood, the sweetness of the fig, and non-indolic white florals - lily of the valley and magnolia, if I had to guess. It's decidedly synthetic smelling, but not bad for what it is. I'm consistently impressed by Phlur's ability to make eco-friendly and hypoallergenic fragrances that make a statement. My favorites (Sandara and Siano) are superb creations, and even the ones that I like less (this one, Moab, and Améline) have a clear point of view.

I feel so-so about this. I had such an overwhelming LOVE reaction to their other scent, Phloria, that when I saw the profile of this I blind bought a travel size. I do not hate it, but it's not what i was expecting. I get a big blast of bright citrus at first and then.... just a softer, round citrus- but like citrus rind, not citrus juice. I don't get fig, neither green nor brown/pink. I don't get woods... just a softened, chemical citrus. I will probably use the travel bottle over the next few years when I just want something different because I believe it can't be returned in this size.

This perfume has notes of bergamot and an artificial violet. The vetiver oil base immediately comes through when freshly sprayed on my skin, little earthy, but mostly a fresh and woody scent. After it settles, it turns to a harsh citrus that I'm really not a fan of. I don't tend to prefer heavy citrus perfumes so I admit to a negative bias on that count. Based on the reviews & my time of purchase, I'm pretty sure I have the reformulation.

I love everything about this fragrance, from the notes listed on Phlur's site and the aesthetics of this house. However, what I don't like so much is how this fragrance acts on me. It's really close to the skin and is lacking in projection. Lastly, I just wish it was amped up a bit more because to me it's a jewel of a fragrance. It was a blind buy that I can say wasn't a total miss and I'm looking forward to trying more from Phlur.

Hmm... it's fine. It's like creamy and powdery and comforting, if that's your thing. I was hoping for something with a little more pizzazz, since tiktok reviewers seem to love it, but it unfortunately doesn't stand out. It's almost identical to an Imaginary Authors fragrance (Yesterday Haze? O Unknown? I can't recall, which should tell you all you need to know.)

This is one strange perfume! I find it so hard to pin it down as I am unsure about 'what' it exactly smells like. It starts on my skin smelling like an aftershave. But it dries down to an odd mixture of warm spices (kind of peppery to be more precise) and powder. I don't know what to make of it but I keep it around because of its strangeness.

This one i have such a love-hate relationship with. Overall, it smells wonderful, very fresh, clean, the sandalwood is very strong with a bit of vetiver, sweetened by the fig, which is really nice. The cloud of smell is so nice, but it's so strong where it becomes almost nauseating when i spray it on myself.

This is a scrubber for me. I had high hopes but on my skin after the first moment of top notes I get extreme screechy lemon industrial cleaner that doesn’t change or settle and has to be washed off. I have a 3/4 full travel spray if anyone wants it.

Opens with a citrus note that is gone in 10 minutes, then turns into a creamy sandalwood with other well blended notes I can’t distinguish. This is a lovely but it stays close. Will test this in warmer weather when I think this beauty will bloom.

This is fine, but I'd contend that the vetiver dominates, not the sandalwood. On me it's a not-too-sharp vetiver with a bit of sweet skin musk. It's quite linear, and is not earth-shattering nor disappointing -- simply fine!

Pretty sure I have a sample of the original formulation but couldn’t say for sure. Either way it reminds me of a craft store. It’s sandalwood and soap with a dab of smoky bourbon, not my style.

Smells like toasted woodchips or a bamboo wicker basket. A decent woody skin scent. Has minimal sillage and lasts about 6 hours. Kind of reminds me of D.S. & Durga I Don’t Know What.

A simple sandalwood, an easy going perfume - creamy but compared to other sandalwood perfumes that I own it smells synthetic or just twisted. Rated OK - not worth the money.

Another synthetic sandalwood fragrance, good for the workplace if you have colleagues allergic to perfume ingredients.
