Quetzalcoatl

I am a self-professed gourmand hater. I also avoid vanilla notes when I can. And yet I find this perfume incredibly comforting, warm, off the beaten path, and an easy reach in cold weather. I did not expect to like Quetzalcoatl, but when my friend sent me a few samples, I sprayed it on a blotter just like the others in order to give it a fair chance. To my surprise, I was captivated! The bitter cacao is what really sold me. I decided right then and there to wear the sample for the day. That rich, deep, astringent cacao is beautifully blended into the fatty, creamy notes of butter and coconut. Jasmine adds lift, oud provides body and density, and the duo of cinnamon and ginger give it a kick. In spite of my skin's ph that tends to heighten sweetness to the point of cloying nausea, Quetzalcoatl wears perfectly balanced. It lasts a long time, too. I have worn my sample enough times to have fully depleted it and will be getting myself a travel spray at some point in the coming weeks. What a delight it is to be so wrong when I have preconceived notions about a perfume based on the note pyramid! Quetzalcoatl presents himself as both a feathered serpent deity and a bearded human god in Aztec culture. I don't get anything serpentine or avian here, but the luscious, opulent nature of this perfume certainly seems fit for a god. It smells, to me, like a decadent and warming beverage to be sipped around the fire while celebrating a bountiful harvest season. Such a treat.

@maritimesunset oh, this brand is absolutely a real deal and sort of a hidden gem, dare I say so. of course, everyone's taste is different but one of the things I especially value is when perfumers have their own distinct signature style in blending and composition (paired with skill of course) and Pictura Fragrans was a very interesting discovery. I almost never post reviews online (it's just not my thing), but I've been a long-time perfume collector (wish I wasn't! because of how expensive it is ) and I'd definitely recommend exploring this house to those looking at perfumes from the "art" perspective. There are many really amazing choco/cocoa-themed perfumes, but I don't think I can compare Quetzalcoatl to any of the others I've tried in this genre. It has this strange (and by that intriguing) "warm haze" vibe. It's almost a little dusty, spicy. Definitely a hot "Mayan Jungle" theme. Maybe an indian hut where cocoa gets processed, mixed with spices. This fragrance aims to paint a picture in your mind, not just be some pleasant perfume (the same applies to all other scents from this house).

I was surprised but happy that Quetzalcoatl is actually a deep dive into Mayan mystique. It starts with raw, unadulterated cacao – think smoky, bittersweet, and a touch primal. Spice notes of cinnamon and ginger cut through, hinting at ancient rituals and potent elixirs. Suddenly, you're lifted into a lush landscape. Jasmine brings an unexpected floral touch, while coconut whispers of tropical heat. But make no mistake, a dash of whisky and rum adds a boozy complexity, a nod to the celebratory energy surrounding this mythical god. The drydown is where things get really interesting. Sandalwood even though its common still here conjures images of sacred temples, its warmth infused with mystery. Caramel and vanilla offer a comforting sweetness, but it's a dark, intoxicating sweetness. Musks ground the fragrance, echoing Quetzalcoatl's connection to the natural world. True to its name this fragrance is a journey into the heart of a god and its time. If you crave boldness, depth, and a touch of the unexpected within chocolate and its history Quetzalcoatl is the experience you've been waiting for.

The first word I thought of when I wanted to describe the top note was mystical. That was followed by amber and sandalwood. This smells like lost a scent – one found by searching the Yucatan jungles for treasure or a Mayan tribe en route to a ceremony. It springs forth with chocolate, cinnamon, and nuts emerging as the Pictura Frangans site suggests. Then, the heart notes indicate caramel and the roots of chocolate with cacao beans and earth. This is a summer scent and it feels very right today - a sunny Saturday on New Orleans April day. When the base notes appear, they are creamy, malty, and rich. A very lovely, mysterious, and seductive scent.

Pictura Fragrans' Quetzalcoatl is a total vibe. It's like stepping into a magical jungle – warm, mysterious, and kinda smoky. Imagine sipping a rich chocolate martini under a canopy of lush green leaves while incense burns in the background. That's the energy this perfume gives me. It's not for everyone, for sure. It's not super sweet or floral like a lot of "girly" perfumes. This one is deeper, way more complex. It's perfect for any night of the year or for daytime wear in fall or winter. I think its for when you want something cozy and intriguing. Honestly, it's like wearing a piece of art – it tells a story and leaves you wanting more.

There is something so incredibly comforting and warming about Quetzalcoatl. It is borderline addicting! I don't typically enjoy gourmand scents because they usually lean towards an overtly sweet profile, but Quetzalcoatl is far from that as it blends a fair amount of warming spices to a deep and dark chocolate. To keep the fragrance from going too dark there is a near perfect use of jasmine to keep it balanced. If you are looking for a beautiful chocolate fragrance that treads in the spicy end of gourmand then look no further.

I’ve tried three of this brand’s scents, and I just don’t like any of them. This one in particular reminds me of my acupuncturist’s office. It doesn’t smell like a perfume at all to me. Smells medicinal and dare I say-half finished? Or maybe a quarter finished? It’s very very off putting to me, but apparently I’m in the minority view here. Also, I have to agree with MaritimeSunset's review below. Alot of the first reviewers have almost zero perfume reviews, and/or perfumes they own. I hate when a company sends people to do fake reviews for them.

There is something very....off? about this brand. AI images, fake reviews, very little info online. I reserve judgement because I haven't tried the scents, but it's ringing a scammy alarm bell to me. Edit: After I posted the comment above, the strange, ever so slightly hostile DMs I received from random "good samaritans" with sparse posting histories didn't do much to assuage my anxieties. I'm almost tempted to try the scents out of morbid curiosity

Quetzalcoatl is a truly different fragrance, in a very good way. It avoids obvious paths and delivers a bold composition where spiced cacao, rum and creamy notes evolve intensely on the skin. The performance is massive — strong projection and extremely long-lasting, even by niche standards. Because of that, I would recommend it only for cold weather or chilly nights, as it can easily feel overwhelming in the heat. The brand’s concept is another strong point: the story feels coherent with the scent, not forced, which adds real value to the fragrance. A great choice for those looking for something artistic, powerful and far from ordinary.

This smells like you traveled back in time to a year unknown. Your sitting on a rug made of the pelt of some large cat, and you are handed a hand-made cup of fresh hot chocolate. But you are no fool, this is no normal drink. Far from it in fact this is no hot-coco. This is made with spicy peppers giving the "hot" part a new name, as you sip on it you feel the sweet gourmand flavors of the delicious blend of pain and pleasure. Burning the roof of your mouth with its hot flavor profile. And yet, you drink it just the same, ad you listen to story's of old gods around the warm fire.

My fav release from Pictura as far as I’ve smelled. This is a very interesting scent with gourmand qualities and a unique feel. To me, it opens up with a buttery cookie like smell, which dries down and becomes more of its own smell but still very pleasant. Regarding some stuff I’ve read below: yes, Pictura is legit. I frequently talk to the owner and he’s a passionate and nice guy. He does ask ppl if they’d want to be so kind to post a review on here but he will not ask anyone to steer away from their own opinion.

I was very interested in this fragrance, until I was immediately disappointed by seeing ai slop on the website. I think it's a little hypocritical for a company that claims to care about art, that claims to be humanitarian, to then go on and use stolen art that destroys the planet.
