Clubman

I was hanging around with my wife and daughter in a mall-chain cosmetics supplier called Sally Beauty when I spied this next to, of all things, barbershop talc and spanking new double-edged razors.... Who knew? I was surprised to see such an unvarnished presentation of what has been tidily reconstructed by the lovely bearded tattooed dandy hobos in the postmodern, pricey & packed barber shop downtown. Anyway, this stuff is great... It will cost you coffee money and you’ll want to round up a glass bottle to decant it into (this step is important.) It starts off almost luminescent in its intense citrus medley, segues into lavender, geranium, and some sweet floral I don’t really care for, and lands on a cushion of mosses (my very new bottle still has oakmoss and tree moss, thank goodness.) As some have commented, note separation is a scratchy vinyl record of an old blues tune. The good news is that the cheapness (strong blast of alcohol, candied citrus and granny florals) burns off by the time you’ve arrived at work, leaving a talc & moss drydown with considerable stamina and pleasant discretion. You come to love the harshness anyway. Applied lightly, it layers pretty well as an aftershave with things that also turn powdery and mossy, or anything with barbershop/eau de cologne opening accords (the current formulation of Azzaro PH is actually improved by it): Rive Gauche, Eau Sauvage, Guerlain Vetiver, Caron Third Man, Brut, or even Habit Rouge. In an age of moss-less reformulations, you might even find it adds something that was missing.

It's odd that of all the scents I own and wear with regularity, this is the first for which I will write a review. I'd never bought the aftershave until recently, but have enjoyed both the talcum and the hair gel as little splashes of scent that rarely attract attention, but always very positively. I suppose I was being a bit of a scent snob since this was easily available at the drugstore... (for under $10.00 for a 6oz container) That said, I find it to be an audacious little scent! Though no one seems to mention it, I smell a rather hefty heart of lemongrass and palmarosa in the mix hovering just above a thick base of rose, leather, lilac, lily of the valley, moss and must. Strangely, Clubman has very little in the way of a top note. What is present in the yummy aldehyde /wood/floral bouquet you get from the linalool in the compounding. I don't suspect it is from a natural source due to the pricing, but both the oakmoss and treemoss anchoring the entire scent seem altogether genuine and very heady. This scent has almost no need to pause for a dry down as it seems to inhabit that space immediately. It absolutely smells like an old fashioned barbershop, but it does so with abject honesty and unabashed masculine charm. I only wish I had the chance to wear this more often.

What else can be said? Clubman is a damn classic. When I wear it my wife calls it "Handsome Sauce". I use Clubman as an aftershave at least once a week, its performance in that regard is superb. I usually follow a Proraso Blue shave with Clubman. I decanted it into a glass bottle and added about a TBS of glycerin USP as a humectant. I go nuts with it, no gentleness, pour out a huge handful and slap it on generously. Stings like a bastard, but that's what makes it a great AS splash. Then I rub the surplus on my chest before getting dressed. It projects for about 20-30 minutes then quickly becomes a skin scent. I feel like for me Clubman sits in the "so old it's new again" region. My wife had somehow made it her whole life without ever smelling it, and when I first tried it she thought it was something modern. My sister in law, however... the one time my younger brother tried Clubman she told him he smelled like an old man. He was bummed, he loved it. I've been able to make it work pretty much anywhere - dressed up, dressed down, doesn't matter. Pretty much impossible to offend anyone with Clubman. It's a Gold Standard for me.

Older Gentleman here. Pinaud Clubman takes me back to my youth and brings back great childhood memories. My father would alternate between Clubman and Old spice as aftershaves, and both evoke fond memories of him and our trips to the barber shop together. Now I use Clubman, Citrus Musk (awesome!) and Old Spice Classic after shaving. All three are terrific eye-openers. I adore the classic fougere slap which mostly fades while dressing, after which I apply whatever fragrance I've selected for the day. The Clubman scent is terrific and it works great from a spray bottle as an air freshener as well. For the price it's a 10/10. Hint: If you want a deeper, upscale barbershop fougere that lasts A LOT longer, I recommend Dior Eau Sauvage, or even more versatile - Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa. But Pinaud Clubman will always enjoy a place of honor in my fragrance collection.

The great Ash Williams from the series "ash vs evil dead" used this as cologne in the first episode, so i had to have in my collection! Oldschool at 100%, clubmen pinaud is a classic aromatic fougere, powdery and clean. There's nothing more to say about it, it's pleasant, retrò and when i wear it i feel....groovy! Now Play space truckin on the stereo! Questo dopobarba -colonia viene usata dal mitico Ash nel primo episodio della serie Ash vs evil dead. Sono un fan di lunga data del personaggio di Bruce Campbell, quindi dovevo averlo. Dopo tanto tempo ormai, posso dire che è un buon dopobarba, molto retro, talcato e pulito. Ottimo prezzo, tanta resa. Scent-7,5 Longevity-7 Sillage-6,5 Versatility-7,5 Uniqueness-7,5 Compliment factor- 6,5 Presentation-6 Backup bottle? Maybe My vote-7,5 In one word- groovy!!
