Clubman Reserve Gent's Gin

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 164 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased September 2019 Can't describe this because I don't know how old-fashioned it is, I have no idea if this dominant note existed. But that's why I found it similar to Commander Новая Заря Novaya Zarya, so it must have existed prior to that 2002 release. The Russians couldn't have invented this fresh, berry soap scent. But they certainly invented the Chypre that was literally bottled as a frag called Shippr (phonetically translated). I have both Russian frags, brand new, and they're fucking AWESOME. Sadly they are splasher EDCs.. But Gent's Gin is a definite all year after shave. Base made of powdery wood. Got to have it.

Hello Gentlemen, Of the Pinaud Clubmans I have owned and tried so far: Virgin Island Bay Rum, Pinaud Clubman, Lilac Vegetal, Cognac Neat, Lime Sec, and Classic Vanilla. The Gent's Gin ties for my favourite of the brand. I really enjoy the red cedar note, which I also feel is the prominent note, but the above section doesn't allow for that as a vote. I don't like a splash bottle, so I always decant to a glass jar with a sprayer/atomizer. Due to the high alcohol to perfume ratio with most of the Pinaud Clubmans, I recommend being liberal with the application and giving any of them a few moments before judging.

I left a decant sprayer of this in our car by mistake. A few days later, my wife, my daughter and her boyfriend all asked me "what is that stuff? It smells great." Kind of frustrating for a fragrance addict with a few hundred scents to have his family rave about a $12 shaving product, but there you have it. This stuff is really good. Fresh, uplifting, sparkly. Best in the Pinaud line, at least the ones I have tried. Easy blind buy.

For many years, I’ve been obsessed with finding a fragrance that accurately represents the scent of a gin and tonic. There are a few on the market that either claim a G&T vibe or where reviewers have detected such a vibe, and I’ve been working my way through a list of these. Back in the spring, based on several recommendations, I tried Hermès Voyage d’Hermès EdT and Penhaligon’s Juniper Sling, and I reviewed both. Sadly, I did not find what I was looking for in Voyage, but I was impressed with the gin-like scent in Juniper Sling’s opening. My difficulty with JS, however, was that the G&T impression faded too quickly. Overall, the longevity of the fragrance wasn’t terrible, but within ten minutes it had lost that unmistakable gin note that I was seeking. Turning now to Gent’s Gin, it’s clear from the start that this is an old-style aftershave lotion. Smelling it straight from the bottle alongside a good-quality gin, the similarities are obvious, though to my nose Gent’s Gin has a deeper, harsher, more aromatic juniper note. It isn’t as subtle as gin, and for that reason the opening on skin isn’t as appealing as Juniper Sling’s. It is, however, a more accurate representation of gin than Voyage, in my opinion. Given that Gent’s Gin is an aftershave, one would expect minimal longevity, but I find it holds up surprisingly well, perhaps because it comes in a splash bottle rather than a spray. I still catch whiffs of it three to four hours after application. With other fragrances I’ve tried that claim a G&T vibe, what’s usually missing is that hard-to-pin-down cold, crisp freshness of ice and chilled tonic water blending with the gin. It’s a difficult smell to describe because it’s as much the sensation of “cold” as it is an actual smell. Somehow, the feeling and the scent fuse into a single perception. While Gent’s Gin doesn’t quite deliver that cold, crisp sensation, and while it only lasts three to four hours, it continues to smell unmistakably gin-like throughout that time. In fact, as it dries down, after the first ten minutes or so on skin, it comes closer to the subtle aromatic nuances of real gin. For the money, I think it’s worth every penny, as long as it’s understood purely as an aftershave. Tested: Full bottle Seasons / Occasions: Summer and spring. General use. To me, Gent's Gin smells a little bit similar to the green tube of Palmolive shaving cream (that you use a shaving brush to lather up) when first applied. It certainly pairs well with that shaving cream. Gent's Gin quickly dries down to a woodier, somehow just a tad bit smoky smell, but some of the juniper freshness is still there. It is "soapy" throughout its short life, and it may be in the top 5 soapiest of my over 100 fragrances. That soapiness is green, sharp, and bright.

Green, fresh, not sweet. Fades away quickly (it's an aftershave, after all) and leaves on a mild powdery skin scent.

Something about this, for lack of better term, 'bounces' around in my nose and annoyingly asserts itself for the short time the aftershave lasts. The best I can describe the smell is 'synthetic freshness', which might be coming from the cedar or juniper notes. I don't smell much lime from it. Unfortunately I didn't much enjoy this and had to toss the small vial I got.

Yeah, it's a bit gin-like and sort of harsh, like gin. Lime and cedar are prominent, the one like fresh juice the other as a woody note but not distinguishable as cedar. It’s okay but I don’t like it much. A bit thin. As it dries, lime is the most prominent note. Okay, not loved.

This smells so good I wish they would make an EDT spray🙌🏻
