Clubman

I was hanging around with my wife and daughter in a mall-chain cosmetics supplier called Sally Beauty when I spied this next to, of all things, barbershop talc and spanking new double-edged razors.... Who knew? I was surprised to see such an unvarnished presentation of what has been tidily reconstructed by the lovely bearded tattooed dandy hobos in the postmodern, pricey & packed barber shop downtown. Anyway, this stuff is great... It will cost you coffee money and you’ll want to round up a glass bottle to decant it into (this step is important.) It starts off almost luminescent in its intense citrus medley, segues into lavender, geranium, and some sweet floral I don’t really care for, and lands on a cushion of mosses (my very new bottle still has oakmoss and tree moss, thank goodness.) As some have commented, note separation is a scratchy vinyl record of an old blues tune. The good news is that the cheapness (strong blast of alcohol, candied citrus and granny florals) burns off by the time you’ve arrived at work, leaving a talc & moss drydown with considerable stamina and pleasant discretion. You come to love the harshness anyway. Applied lightly, it layers pretty well as an aftershave with things that also turn powdery and mossy, or anything with barbershop/eau de cologne opening accords (the current formulation of Azzaro PH is actually improved by it): Rive Gauche, Eau Sauvage, Guerlain Vetiver, Caron Third Man, Brut, or even Habit Rouge. In an age of moss-less reformulations, you might even find it adds something that was missing.

It's odd that of all the scents I own and wear with regularity, this is the first for which I will write a review. I'd never bought the aftershave until recently, but have enjoyed both the talcum and the hair gel as little splashes of scent that rarely attract attention, but always very positively. I suppose I was being a bit of a scent snob since this was easily available at the drugstore... (for under $10.00 for a 6oz container) That said, I find it to be an audacious little scent! Though no one seems to mention it, I smell a rather hefty heart of lemongrass and palmarosa in the mix hovering just above a thick base of rose, leather, lilac, lily of the valley, moss and must. Strangely, Clubman has very little in the way of a top note. What is present in the yummy aldehyde /wood/floral bouquet you get from the linalool in the compounding. I don't suspect it is from a natural source due to the pricing, but both the oakmoss and treemoss anchoring the entire scent seem altogether genuine and very heady. This scent has almost no need to pause for a dry down as it seems to inhabit that space immediately. It absolutely smells like an old fashioned barbershop, but it does so with abject honesty and unabashed masculine charm. I only wish I had the chance to wear this more often.

What else can be said? Clubman is a damn classic. When I wear it my wife calls it "Handsome Sauce". I use Clubman as an aftershave at least once a week, its performance in that regard is superb. I usually follow a Proraso Blue shave with Clubman. I decanted it into a glass bottle and added about a TBS of glycerin USP as a humectant. I go nuts with it, no gentleness, pour out a huge handful and slap it on generously. Stings like a bastard, but that's what makes it a great AS splash. Then I rub the surplus on my chest before getting dressed. It projects for about 20-30 minutes then quickly becomes a skin scent. I feel like for me Clubman sits in the "so old it's new again" region. My wife had somehow made it her whole life without ever smelling it, and when I first tried it she thought it was something modern. My sister in law, however... the one time my younger brother tried Clubman she told him he smelled like an old man. He was bummed, he loved it. I've been able to make it work pretty much anywhere - dressed up, dressed down, doesn't matter. Pretty much impossible to offend anyone with Clubman. It's a Gold Standard for me.

Older Gentleman here. Pinaud Clubman takes me back to my youth and brings back great childhood memories. My father would alternate between Clubman and Old spice as aftershaves, and both evoke fond memories of him and our trips to the barber shop together. Now I use Clubman, Citrus Musk (awesome!) and Old Spice Classic after shaving. All three are terrific eye-openers. I adore the classic fougere slap which mostly fades while dressing, after which I apply whatever fragrance I've selected for the day. The Clubman scent is terrific and it works great from a spray bottle as an air freshener as well. For the price it's a 10/10. Hint: If you want a deeper, upscale barbershop fougere that lasts A LOT longer, I recommend Dior Eau Sauvage, or even more versatile - Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa. But Pinaud Clubman will always enjoy a place of honor in my fragrance collection.

The great Ash Williams from the series "ash vs evil dead" used this as cologne in the first episode, so i had to have in my collection! Oldschool at 100%, clubmen pinaud is a classic aromatic fougere, powdery and clean. There's nothing more to say about it, it's pleasant, retrò and when i wear it i feel....groovy! Now Play space truckin on the stereo! Questo dopobarba -colonia viene usata dal mitico Ash nel primo episodio della serie Ash vs evil dead. This has been my "signature scent" for about a decade before I was even into fragrances. I used to shave everyday for work and would splash this delicious tonic on my face after every shave. Rocking a beard these days but still wanting to smell like this sweet nectar, I bought a 3 oz. fragrance bottle style glass container off Amazon with an atomizer and spray it on as my fragrance. Maybe it's the Italian in me, but I'll spray about 20 initial sprays on me to get some semblance of longevity out of it. But it's an after shave concentration after all so whaddaya gonna do? This is a more than safe blind buy for someone who loves classic barber shop fougere scents. I want to be buried with a bottle of Clubman Pinaud in my cold, dead hands.

Wearing this as a cologne splash after receiving it yesterday. This is one of the best smelling things to come in a cheap plastic bottle that I've ever experienced. As an aftershave the scent is top shelf - quintessential barber shop smell that will remind you of any classic men's grooming establishment. Burst of alcohol laden citrus to begin that comes to dry into a smooth spicy Fougère, like a mix of old spice and Azzaro Pour Homme, on me it has projected maybe an hour before becoming a skin scent, but nothing really lasts on my skin. In summary - cheap yet classy cologne perfect after a shave or just splashed on subsequent to a hot shower. Ideal for any time, all occasions.

I hate shaving but I love splashing on Clubman afterwards. I use it near daily, it's just a really comforting, clean, masculine scent. To me it starts out green and citrusy, though the alcohol can be a little strong/irritating at first (especially beneath a facemask). It dries down to a warm, powdery scent that I catch hints of throughout the morning. For an aftershave I think its perfect. As a barbershop classic with big "Country Club Size" bottles for like $10, what's there not to love? I honestly don't see myself ever not having a bottle on hand, in 30 years I'll probably still be using this exact same aftershave.

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 006 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased November 2013 This was one of the first serious business scents I had purchased with my own cash in 2013. I wore it a lot, thought it was mature, smooth, vibrant and inspirational, nostalgic and dense with poetic character. Frags are about art and poetry. They are poetic, the right ones, the good ones. They tell you everything about their author and producer, the time of their invention, the way of the world, small things, big subtle things. This is one for the ages. Why don't you have one of your own?

I've recently discovered the joy and relaxation of wet shaving, and naturally this seems to be the go-to brand for antiseptic aftershave. I went with the original scent since it seems to have the highest "love" and "like" votes of all the clubman. The scent seems almost like a secondary purpose, the first being its antiseptic qualities. The scent is just awesome, it has oak moss and citrus with classic barbershop feel. To me it has a strong beach, or sunscreen type scent overall and I just love it! As expected for an aftershave the scent isnt very strong and is brief, but it is awesome.

This and Special Reserve are my reaches straight out the shower when i don’t anticipate going back out. And not that it doesn’t smell good or smells dated, because I have worn it outside my home, but it’s just that there’s only 365 days in a year and i have so many fragrances to pull from, so why squander the opportunity to wear something more interesting that i paid more money for? Know what i mean? But, pound for pound, this and Special Reserve DEMOLISHES fragrances at LEAST 10 times more expensive than them. The very epitome of the barbershop genre.

I really dig this stuff. As somebody said below me, it is definitely a "man's man" scent. I think anybody would agree it also smells comforting -- like if you can imagine what your mom smells like; this evokes that same kind of familiar, safe feel. It's absolutely the smell of a classic American barbershop. Its cultural familiarity paired with the fact that it's actually got some great longevity makes it a great day scent, even for work. I wear this with or without a shave. It smells like a respectable man who takes care of himself. Good enough for me!

I see the ingredient change as mentioned, although my nose luckily doesn't smell anything different. Powdery, fresh pine, "green", and menthol. Works to disinfect, moisturize and cool skin after shaving. Seems like this is the classic base DNA for a lot of Fougere and similiar style fragrances. Similar to Amouge Reflection Man, Terre D'Hermes, Valentino Uomo Intense, Brut, Drakkar Noir (minus the heavy upfront spice). Not sure why Pinaud Clubman only has an after-shave version of this very successeful scent but has released other cologne variations.

Pinaud Clubman brings back so many memories of my younger days in the military. High & tight razor fades & Pat the barber would slap it on your neck at the end. I use this every day, after the post-work shower to just smell clean & fresh. Is it an EDT, EDP, nah man its after shave its not going to last long its not supposed to, but its just so darn enjoyable to breathe in & remember those haircuts. I know that "barbershop" fougere is a thing, but to me, this is the only truly authentic Barbershop scent I know of, unless you want to give Tabac a try.

I was able to obtain oakmoss absolute and I can tell you, this is the real deal. Actually there’s a great article on Kafkaesque’s blog about oakmoss. Regardless of IFRA issues, Oak Moss is produced without the atranol and chloratranol and is therefore safe. The primary reason it isn’t used in significant doses in perfumery is because it has fallen out of favor. Not here! The oakmoss and the tree moss absolutes are used in judicious yet stunning ways in this wonderful little aftershave formula. I use it as a base to layer, often with other fougeres.

This beloved barbershop classic is very nice if you like old-style masculine chypres and fougéres, because like them it has loads of oakmoss. Do bear in mind that this is an aftershave rather than an EdT or EdP, so it's not strong (because it is not meant to be). I like very much the idea posted below of using it as a base for other citrus chypres and fougéres, but it's also fine on it's own. This is about as "barbershop" as it gets, and there's a reason why this is still manufactured and still so beloved. This just never goes out of style.

Pro tip: I use this as deodorant. Actually any alcohol-based aftershaves will do. Why? The alcohol in it will kill the bacteria on your underarm which is the source of bad odor. Try it out. Notice how long you stay fresh using aftershave as deodorant. I use right after the shower and I'm good for at least 1 & 1/2 days. Normal deodorants seem to only last a few hours and by the end of the day, I'm not smelling great. Why? The bacteria is still there, lingering. And I hate smelling bad. I think we all do. Thats why we're here on Fragrantica.

Just got back into wetshaving and I have several aftershaves to choose from since I have samples, cologne sets and balms as well. But... Nothing puts that smile on my face like Clubman! This is effortlessly gentleman at it's finest with an amazing price point! Evertime I use a different aftershave I always wish it was a Clubman day, but it just make this fragrance that much more enjoyable when it IS a Clubman day. This will always be in style for real men that do stuff! Pinaud Bay Rum is pretty good too!

A classic for a reason. I can't say that it has a super strong "scent" to me since I have smelled it so often but it is definitely a smell I get complimented on often. Stays fresh on the skin and is light enough to not be overpowering. My partner loves how this smells on me and it is incredibly cheap and accessible due to being available at almost any Sally's beauty supply. I can't count how many times over the last few years I have reached for this instead of a traditional perfume or cologne.

Quintessential barbershop scent. I've been getting into classic aftershaves lately. Brut (my favorite), Aqua Velva, Old Spice. Etc. Clubman reminds me most of Brut. A more refined gentlemanly Brut. Such a great scent to have around, and cheap as borscht for a big bottle. Sometimes they get it right decades before any of us were around. I do haircuts for some limited family and I bought the Clubman talc and a neck brush as well to give the full experience. Everyone is getting a splash of this.

Out of my sizable collection of expensive and cheap frags this is one of the best if not the best. Punches way above its weight. Oakmoss, citrus, lavender, some spices and a touch of sweetness; green, barbershop, fougere. A little old fashioned but who gives a damn. Nice performance, dirt cheap and smells great. Makes you feel like the pimp dude on the bottle with your cane and top hat. Ladies should get in on it too. Give Clubman a shot!

I found this as a teenager 35 years ago and was so stoked that I could have the literal barber smell in a bottle and throw it on whenever. It is such a classic and clean barbershop smell. To me it’s impossible not to like. It’s a cheap price and you get an awesome clean fresh manly barbershop frag for under $10 but don’t expect longevity. It’s a mood booster for me. For what it is... 10/10

I just put it on my hands and then put my both hands to my nose and close my eyes. This quality was here before I was born. Oakmoss is so beautiful and fresh. One day I did this 3 times. Something timeless and smooth there is in it, but then it is gone so fast or I get nose blind to it. Brut comes to my mind, but it is not that at all, Brut is German, this is more French.

This is a timeless classic and absolutely love it. If you are into classics this is for you. This is also the signature scent of a barbershop if you love that scent. Would I buy again? Absolutely. I have bought the other scents from Pinuad and have so far used the Bay Rum (which I absolutely love also) and the Musk. The Gents score ( 10/10 a gentleman's classic)

Pinaud Clubman reminds me of my grandfather, and that isn't a bad thing. This is a classic fragrance and an unbelievable value. The barbershop on my new-construction Navy ship was outfitted with a couple of bottles and the barber gave me one, which lasted me several years. I haven't had any since but am reminded to put it on my to-buy list.

Impressive legs on this juice! Picked up a 6oz bottle the other day for pennies and it's just wonderful...barbershop heaven. Creamy-powdery citrus, herbs, and moss. Delightfully tenacious too, I was smelling this 6hrs into my first and only application of the day. Smells like a polished gent straight out of the shop on a Saturday morning.

My Dad had Clubman when I was a teenager, but because he was mostly an Old Spice guy, I ended up sharing this with my brother. It's a true classic barbershop scent, and "old-fashioned" in the best sense of the word. An excellent choice when you don't want to smell overpowering but you DO want to smell great!

One of the best most classic aftershaves of all time. This is barbershop scent like no other...immediately transports me back to my childhood going to Mr. Nicholas’ Barbershop. Dry down is exquisite and should be enjoyed by all. Works well when applying a barbershop fragrance afterward.

I could bathe in this! Wait....I actually did. When I was growing up there used to be a kids shampoo called "КРЯ-КРЯ". I'm telling you something in Clubman reminds me of the vintage version of "КРЯ-КРЯ". Let the "in-soviet-country-cologne-splash-you" jokes roll in! :D :D :D

wasnt expecting much as its an aftershave lotion but just wanted that fresh clean shaved vibe after shower and omg it delivers. smells lovely. just wish it was stronger but i cant complain £7 for 50ml it also has the best soothing affect ive come across in a fragrance

Classic barbershop scent. Doesn't get more barbershop than this. Just an outstanding lemony, citrusy, powdery scent. It's not complex. Just a simple, straightforward scent. It's cheap, readily available just about everywhere and it's good.

My most recent bottle of this felt a little different, and indeed it's true -- there is no oak moss in it now. While I still enjoy it on occasion, I miss the very specific character moss imparted to this fragrance in particular.

Ok. I just picked this up along with the clubman talc. This stuff is everything I wanted and more. Im swooning over myself lol. Its a classic barbershop, creamy, powdery and manly. I just love it so much! Its cheap and lovely.

This is what men wear. My fiancé loves this stuff and out of all my fragrances this one is in her top 5. Don’t let anyone tell you this is an old man scent. Yes, it is old but it still holds up well despite its age.

This is a Classic. It is somewhat of a barbershop smell, but it is very floral and a bit creamy as well. A lovely masculine smell. Very long lasting for an aftershave. Better than anything at this price.

The King of barbershop scents, the close-shave antiseptic guardian, the one and only Clubman. This is the essence of men and grooming without a doubt the fragrance of the shave worthy.

Normally my Evening Scent, Combined with the shaving powder, makes for a nice clean feeling. I definitely pick up the citrus notes. Overall great smelling aftershave.

Good old Pinaud Clubman..... way before Old Spice and Tabac it was the go to grooming product for the man who likes to take care of himself. Visiting the barbershop was an event....not just getting a haircut it was also an exchange platform for news, gossip and Chinese whisper. The question is what barbershop people went to. In North America most traditional barbershop scents were based on floral essences and powdery nuances and they basically reflect what was available at that time. Pinaud Clubman and Florida Water are that kind of scent. The essence of shaving cream, hair tonic , astringent, desinfectant and talcum powder. THAT'S what a barbershop scent was in the US. Hence aftershaves such as Brut, Canoe, Jade East and Pinaud Clubman smell similar. In the Caribbean it was the Bay Rum....and I mean Bay Rum...not any chypre style after shave named Bay Rum. Bay leaf, spices (mainly clove and cinnamon) and rum. In Italy the barbershop smelled of Mediterranean citrus fruits, menthol, herbs and powder. In the US, barbershops were full of big colourful glass bottles (today mostly plastic) in green, blue, red, brown, purple and all sorts of other colours from Pinaud, Lucky Tiger, Lustray, Stephane and many many more. Don't blame Clubman if it stings after a shave.....you simply had an ordinary shave and didn't prep your skin right. Not Pinauds fault. The scent is mossy-citric after application and turns into a greenish mossy powder scent. To my nose it shares some characteristics with the original Brut. By no means identical but related. Longevity is not really an issue because it is an after shave after all but i recommend to splash some in your hands and go through your hair after your grooming regime is finished. It lasts quite a while in your hair. A good classic allrounder

Yeah, this is a cheap after shave lotion. Yeah, it doesn't have great performance. And yeah, I own lots of stuff that smells better. But...........Pinaud Clubman takes me all the way back to my childhood. As a kid, a haircut wasn't finished until the barber splashed some Clubman on his hands and gave your neck and face a quick pat down. It didn't matter if the barbershop was in San Francisco or Boston. Every barber seemed to use this stuff. And for a kid, getting after shave slapped on after a haircut made ya feel like an official adult. So Pinaud Clubman occupies a spot that basically no other fragrance can compete with. And it certainly doesn't smell bad or cheap. I actually like it a lot. The only real knock I can throw at it is longevity. But an aftershave isn't supposed to be an EDP. Whaddaya want for 8 bucks a bottle? This is a great daily wear for errands, yard work, a run, a bike ride, a hike, or the office if you just want to be low key. This stuff does exactly what it was designed to do and it has done it for about 200 years. Nothing is ever going to bump this off its perch as far as I'm concerned. It's as close to a perfect 5.0 as anything I own.

As many reviews have already stated, this is a classic barbershop-type aftershave, and one of the best examples of the genre. It's less powdery than some, despite the heavy oakmoss note. The citrus I get is mainly bergamot. It's a tad more green and less dry than comparable fragrances, and has a nice alcoholic zing that makes my nose tingle well after I've splashed it on. It feels almost minty, but I think that effect is coming from the lavender rather than any actual mint. It performs impressively well for an aftershave. In fact, you may want to be rather careful when applying it, as a comes in a splash bottle; you can't typically over-apply aftershaves, but this one you can. If I apply it like an EDC, it lasts about four hours. This is worth trying even if you're not a fan of barbershop fragrances, because it does stand out to some extent and is very cheap as well. If nothing else, it's likely to give you or someone around you a feeling of nostalgia.

Clean, powdery, bright (the citrus drops off fast though). Just a classic profile that sits in one form or another in every North American barbershop. Excellent value that still smells good today. I place the scent profile and performance between Canoe (softer) and BRUT (stronger). That is just a reference of potentially familiar profiles one might know as a reference point. Only got this and Bay Rum when I started wet shaving with a safety razor looking for a good astringent aftershave I could get in bulk, the rest is pleasant history. Also note, Pinaud has a base that pretty much links many of their splashes, a musky note that is distinct even in the Bay Rum, while the quality is not super high it punches better than you would expect at the price. Also, I highly advise a decant into glass, the plastic does bleed into application, glass eliminates that very nicely making the whole experience that much better.

This is more an inexpensive and practical reach, but after a shave and heading out to work it is a relatively safe choice. You will smell clean, slightly sweet, with an oakmoss vibe. This will be more skin scent after an hour or two, but will resurface in heat, and even the next day when you hit the shower. When you hear "Barbershop" or "Fougere" the shaving community goes here. This can be confusing when you smell other scents in these categories because they often smell very different. If you know BRUT than this is a much softer version along the same lines. They are not identical but share similarities that make it loved by some, but too basic and old for others. This is a comfortable clean scent, few will comment on it, and less will know what it is despite the long history.
