Apple Tabac

I've been following Pineward since the early days. The dram samples and handwritten labels. I can say with confidence, I'm Pineward's biggest fan, and my bottle of Apple Tabac holds a special place in my heart, for reasons I don't feel right stating publicly. I can't believe I haven't posted my Fragrantica reviews of Pineward, as I've tried nearly all of them. So let us begin. The juice is burnish scarlet red-mahogany. Thick like an Extrait. Just removing the atomizer cap fills the air with the potent autumnal brew. You've never smelled an apple note like this. Nick is a wizard. He has a way of taking natural handmade absolutes and material extracts, and bolstering their natural aromatic properties with other materials. Apple Tabac is created around the most photorealistic concentrated red apple accord. Ripe, perhaps slightly overripe - you've wandered into an apple orchard - it's mid-october, and you're surrounded by the red, orange, and yellow glow of peak autumn foliage. Some apples - all red - remain on the trees, perfect for picking. The rest have falled to the dried golden ground, where a few have begun to slightly ferment. The aroma surrounds you. It smells like October. Along the paths of this apple orchard are oak casks - inside, a long forgotten recipe is maturing. Pressed apple cider, rum, a pinch of mulling spice, and a few sprigs from the nearby balsam fir forest. You pry open the cask head, and the heady, indulgent elixir wafting up and filling the air. You pour a stein. Take a seat on a nearby cask, and reach into your overcoat to fetch the pouch of rich golden burley tobacco. That dry, leathery raisin-like aroma. Stuff the bowl, sit back, and take it all in. The apple trees, the autumnal colours against the dark backdrop of the forest, the rich warming glogg of spiced cider and rum, and the ponderous draw of the burley leaf. You're at peace. This is October. This is Apple Tabac. Not that it even matters, with how gorgeous this is, but performance is utterly ridiculous. It won't leave the skin until you shower and scrub. It will project like a missile for a couple of hours, before enveloping you in a small,scent bubble for several more, before settling as a skin scent until the end of time. The apple note here is as realistic as they come, and you will not find an equal to this. The way it's build makes it inherently autumnal-smelling. It's "fall in a bottle", perhaps equally as much as the likes of Slumberhouse Sova, Parfums de Marly Oajan, or Killian Angels' Share. It has the pureness of something like Sova, but the specificity of something like one of the others. None of them smell even remotely similar. If you've tried Christmas Wine or Glühwein, this shares the same underlying dried dark fruit accord found in those. I can wax poetic all day long about this stuff. It's a Pineward, so of course it's going to evoke very vivid and specific imagery. It really is the idea of October - boiled down and bottled in the form of an apple orchard. If that appeals to you, you're forever missing out on something extraordinary until you sample this. It's the most bold and brazen bottle of the lineup, and there's nothing subtle about it, but it's truly the best of its kind.

Apple, tobacco, and fir? Shut up and take my money. The second I opened my sample I knew this was full bottle worthy. I love apple scents but have a hard time finding ones that aren't green-apple/fresh/shampooey. I like those too, don't get me wrong, but they can come off a little juvenile and/or wearable only in the spring and summer. This apple scent steers dark, more mature, and suits cold weather better. To me, there isn't much change between the opening and dry down. Authentic, ripe red apple up front, tobacco (fresh pipe tobacco, not ashy cigarette tobacco) in the middle, and fir balsam in the background. There are some other fruits in there too, and some rum, which I can't smell as distinctly as the other notes, but gives it a cider-like feel at times. As some have said, it can smell candle-y, though I didn't pick up on that until I applied it with a sprayer. It's autumnal, even a little festive, but not in pumpkin-spice way. I've smelled every scent from Pineward and this is one of the "safer" offerings, and one of the few that leans just a touch femme of center. Some of the other Pineward scents I've tried on my skin have a curry-like note in the base (Bindebole, Boreal), but thankfully this one does not. My other favorites include Murkwood, Christmas Wine, and Brokilan. This is an extrait concentration, so it's potent and lasts forever, especially on clothing. Because the juice is dark brown, I avoid spraying it directly on clothes, but even after washing I can still smell it on the cuffs of my sweaters. It ain't cheap, but given the longevity and that it comes from an indie house (Nick is responsive to questions and very nice, btw), I think its more than worth it if you find a scent you love. I got the 17ml which is perfect for me budget-wise and usage-wise.

Before you read: I'm beginning my perfume journey, and my nose is really weak compared to everyone else, so take this with a grain of salt. It starts off strong with a juicy red apple, on my skin it's really sweet and apply, it's heavy on fruit. There's a faint semblance of tobacco, but not enough for me to pin it down as such. Despite this, I want to purchase a 37ml bottle for the fall and winter! I'm not sure if it's my skin chemistry, or my nose only picking up on mostly sweet things, but I found it important enough to take note on myself. My friends and parents compared it to a bath and body fall candle, I agree. It's very very cozy, almost like going to your friends house during a blizzard. Then they open the door and you get hit with warm apple because of achristmas party. Anyways, thanks for reading, happy sampling!

Apple Tabac lasts a long time on my skin and is very enjoyable. This indeed has a strong "Fresh Red Apple" note. As a kid I worked in the orchards with apples many summers and I can say that this apple note is indeed that of a fresh red apple as opposed to a Golden Delicious or a Granny Smith apple type note. This is counter balanced by a tobacco leaf like note. This tobacco leaf note smells of the dried tobacco leaf variety to me but perhaps thats because of the blending. It gives the apple note a bed of warmth to lay on along with a slight zing from some fir balasam and butteriness from the rum note. This is a beautiful fragrance and I have been enjoying it very much.

This opens with fresh and sweet apples. They smell like fiji apples or pink lady apples, as they have a mild tart sweetness to them. This scent is weirdly extremely fresh despite the name and notes. As the scent develops you get those dried fruits and the rum resin. They’re boozy fruits, sweet and warm. The tobacco here adds a warm smokiness but its not at the forefront. This scent is mostly fruity. These are warm stewed fruits drenched in rum and covered by a thin smoky cloud of tobacco. I loved this one depsite not a ton of tobacco like I hoped.

This is genuinely amazing. This is my first time trying Pineward, and I love this! I normally dislike gourmand smells, and I very much dislike the green apple note in fragrances, but this one is different. It is realistic red apple with spices, 100%. On my skin, it is not very sweet, as tobacco stays throughout the wear, and fir is very faint but it is there, too. I do see a little bit the "autumn candle" comparison, but this perfume is far better quality than a candle. I think this might be full bottle worthy.

This fragrance is amazing starts off with strong juicy red apple and a dirty tobacco that can be slightly off putting to some people so I wouldn’t say it’s a safe blind buy but when it dries down it smells like sweet apple cider and light tobacco with dried fruits it’s definitely worth getting a sample of this might be my favorite fragrance ever and I highly recommend

The hunt for the perfect apple has concluded. This is it. Delicious, juicy red apples covered in caramel and spices, with a hint of Tobacco underneath. The juicy red apples are the star of the show- from beginning to end. If you're looking for a natural juicy red apple smell, nothing else comes close. This is the perfect winter or cold weather fragrance, period.

Really nice scent. The apple is real but reminds me of an herbal essence shampoo. I wish in my wearing it would have turn a bit darker because the apple note did not give up to give way to the tobacco or the conifer notes. Mostly apple, rum and other winter fruits.

Realistic red apple with fir and sweet tobacco. Really like the apple note and the pineward fir-DNA is here in the right amount and not too overpowering. This smell fantastic, but sadly it is far too sweet for me to actually wear without getting sick of it.

my friend said i smelled like a scarecrow. initially very sweet but mellows into a 'wandering an apple orchard and going on a hayride' farm-y sort of smell. long lasting and wearable if you don't mind being called a scarecrow.

Straight up green apple candy opening that quickly mellows into a somewhat smokey tobacco rum. I didn't know I liked tobacco as a note until this. Great fall fragrance. Could be layered with a vanilla to sweeten the tobacco.

I wish this brand didn't cost an arm and a leg. I'd have half of their perfumes by now. I love this one. I mean I really love it. So good, so to the point, and like 90% of Pineward, last forever.

I love how clear and focused every note is represented. Masterclass in perfumery. Never batches ( fall 2025 ) have more rum, as stated on their web page.

This is the best apple fragrance I’ve ever tried. And easily the best fall scent I’d ever use. Love this stuff and will be getting a 37ml bottle soon.

smells like really fancy apple cider to me, really sad that tobacco wasnt as prominent as i thought, but still a really great fragrance.

A strong apple note fades down into warm, pleasant and smoky tobacco and wood after several minutes. A great option for fall.

Apple Tabac is my first sampling of the house of Pineward Perfumes, based in the Western US, which launched last year in 2020 but that I just discovered recently by chance, featuring many scents inspired the temperate forests of the region, curated by perfumer/owner Nicholas Nilsson. Apple Tabac fittingly involves a lot of red apple, but not a ton of tobacco, immediately reminding me of apple cider and similar, spiced apple products (apple brandy, perhaps apple sauce), so very comforting, delightful, and mostly gourmand-like, with the notes of resins and dry fruits featuring prominently. It does not smell exactly like a food item, as the tobacco is part of the mix, but the blend is quite sweet and rich, and leans more toward a stewed / cooked apple vibe than a fresh apple, at least to my nose. Apple Tabac pivots leans toward a daring, darker scent but in the scheme of cold-weather-evocative perfumes is fairly safe and agreeable, and I think that actually makes for a great introduction to a brand. Even those like me who adore a number of the darker, edgier scents of Slumberhouse or Hendley might nonetheless take comfort in Apple Tabac, as it hits the “stewed fruit with spices and resins” combination very effectively. Performance wise, it’s quite strong and dense; I applied very little juice from the dabbers before a scent bubble was present, and I can fairly easily smell the fragrance on my neck and wrists more than an hour into wearing. Apple Tabac (and every perfume in the catalogue) is priced at $135/80/20 for 37/17/4ml, with individual samples sold for each, as well the sample pack of all 11 scents (1ml each in dabber vials) for $45, which is what I bought. 7 out of 10

Fall-oriented, hyperrealistic, red apple. There's an abundance of apple here, from the opening to the very end. The dried fruits and tobacco are added with a restrained touch and smoothly arranged to augment the apple note without vying for attention, pushing the overall scent deeper into fall territory. Curiously, the tinge of pine commingling with the other notes in the background sometimes gives me the overall impression of celery in a really interesting way, introducing fresh, green, elements. This feels fairly linear to me, which is fine because there's something very alluring about the composition. I doubt this will satisfy anyone's tobacco or pine cravings, but this is by far the most interesting and smooth apple-forward scent I have come across. It occupies fall-apple territory without ending up smelling purely like apple pie. The longevity and projection is *very* strong to me. Possibly one of the strongest of any of Pineward's offerings. Lastly, I have to disagree with the yankee candle comparisons that seem to appear for all scents that are built around notes we associate with fall. I wouldn't let these comparisons deter you if the notes of apple tobac look interesting to you. I understand yankee candle has wormed its way into our hearts thanks to the ubiquity of their candles and stores, but apple tobac feels realistic, smooth, and interesting in a way that I don't think any yankee candle can begin to approximate.

This smells like a candle but so what?! I love the smell of it. It really smells like red apples. Delicious! I bought quite a few samples from this brand, and they are not listed in the data base and I am considering some purchases. This won't be one of them since it really isn't very perfume like but some of his other offerings are. This is not a crisp green apple or an apple shampoo/shower gel scent this is true fresh off the tree red apples. Again, it is delicious! The perfumes I am considering but not in the data base are..... IceFall: This is a tart white grapefruit, blue cypress, maritime pine, seaweed, cedar, sandalwood, juniper scent. It smells like the deep green forest meets up w/ the blue ice of the North Pole. The winter scent I have been looking for. Chanderly: Lavender, beeswax, champaca, anise, vetiver, tuberose, deers tongue, vanilla, cinnamon, jasmine, sandalwood, cloves. This is an interesting take on tuberose, starts off w/ fresh lavender but becomes waxy and indolic tuberose and jasmine combined w/ sweet vanilla, soft spices and woods. Very sensual. Velvetine: Ambergris, cypress, vanilla, clove, labdanum, fir. This is one of the best true warm vanillas I have ever smelled. The warm musky qualities of the ambergris just make this so rich, sensual and inviting. This is an interesting brand. I enjoyed everything I smelled.

This fragrance smells really good. I agree it does smell like an autumn candle. I'm working my way through my Autumn and Winter 2024 sample sets, and this one goes well on the days I wear my Inner Angel products from BBW and the Angel's Share dupe from Dua perfumes, Angelic Elixir. The main issue I have with this scent is poor performance for me (longevity and sillage, your results will probably be better....my skin eats fragrance), and the juice stains white clothes green.

This is what I thought Ambre Narguile would smell like. It's very apple-y, somewhat spicy and a bit foodie. The tobacco is very discreet and there is also a slight alcoholic note from the rum. It's very wearable as long as you go easy on the trigger. 1, maximum 2 sprays are enough. More than that, you are going to choke people up, this scent is very bombastic. Lasts super well too. Fantastic offering from Pineward, who is run by a young and passionate fragrance connoiseur.

I actually really like it, it's one of a few apple scent that actually lasts. The only issue I've run into it the apple scent sticks closer to your skin, and when smelling it farther what remains tends to be the Fir and tobacco, meaning the sillage can lean much more akin to some of their other tree scents than the that sweet apple. Still very delicious.

The apple is bright but dry, not juicy. The opening reminds me of La Danza by Nobile 1942, but of course, where that fragrance goes into gooey vanilla ice cream and pie crust, Apple Tabac has a soft base of dried fruits and tobacco. I think it is a bit candleish, but not in an off-putting way.

Another great one from Pineward. Taking a candy apple, laying it on a pile of loose tobacco, and sitting it next to a fir tree. The apple and tobacco were the stars. I really didn't get any rum. But this is very nice. Great performance. Another one perfect for fall.

apple, apple, and more apple. syrupy sweet balanced with aromatic balsam and tobacco. like walking through an apple orchard in late autumn, pipe and boozy cider in hand. yes it does smell like a candle, and no that's not a bad thing!

yummy!! very strongly synthetic and yankee candle-like which may turn you off at first, but dries down a lot mellower. not photorealistic apple imo but it doesn’t need to be. still delish

It smells just like an apple candle. I do wish there was more of the tobacco and fir but it still smells nice. Great for fall!

I love the idea of Pineward conceptually, but unfortunately I have liked very few of their offerings so far in my testing journey. I do like Apple Tabac, though, even if it's not something I would normally reach for. There is a very forward apple note, though it's something like stewed apples bobbing in a pot of hot toddy rather than a fresh apple. I has that mulled alcohol sensibility, a lightly spiced drink that heats you from the inside out on a cold day. The apple is a little sweet for me; a little sickly, but in a realistic way that food or drink might be too sweet instead of the way perfumes are usually syrupy saccharine. I think it's the tobacco that gives it an unctuous, balsamic sort of sweetness. A little too sweet a fragrance for my taste, but I find it to be well-constructed. Not my usual choice and I don't think I need a full bottle, but in cold weather I think I will use up the rest of my sample. 7.5/10.

I'm working my way through a full sample set from Pineward. This is one of the fragrances I was really wanting to try from the set, as it sounded really unique and like nothing I've smelled before. The opening is like a tart green apple, then the drydown reveals the rum and tobacco notes. I feel like there's not much overlap though. There's a very short period where I'm smelling apple and tobacco at the same time, which was a disappointment for me. Another disappointment was the projection, I found this to be barely more than a skin scent on me. Even when I really slathered it on, I couldn't really smell it unless my nose was right up to my wrist. That being said, it did last a long time as a skin scent, so I'll give it that. If you're a person who likes to keep your scents close, then this might be for you. Overall, I didn't dislike apple tabac, but I was underwhelmed by the performance

Serious Yankee Candle vibes from this one. The opening is sweet, almost maple syrup-y from the rum, and dries down to a nice, 50/50 blend of red apple and tobacco. Nothing wrong with this scent, just impossible to avoid the candle vibes given the base ingredients. What is a much bigger issue here is the sillage. Normally I'm not one to complain about strong projection but good god, this thing has the Midas Touch: my skin, my clothes, my cats' fur, even the food I eat, it all gets swallowed up by this scent. It's impossible to avoid when it's on me and impossible to get off once it's there. Just like King Midas himself, every time I wore this I prayed to the heavens for someone to free me from this curse. I mean, hats off to Pineward for geting a monster performance out of this fragrance, but phew, sometimes you just need a break!

I found this scent to stand out from the rest of the Pineward line in a disappointing way. To my nose, this is a very linear apple-cinnamon scent that smells just like the ubiquitous fall candles. It's sweet, spicy, and warm, with less fruitiness than I was expecting and almost no depth. I would describe it as unchallenging. The scent I was hoping this would be -- boozy, juicy, spicy, deep and gourmand without being sweet -- I found elsewhere in the line, in Revelries. I would recommend you try out that one if Apple Tabac leaned a little too Homegoods for you.

Love the concept of this, I'm usually a big fan of non-sugary/floral approaches to apple notes. However the apple in apple tabac is just missing some freshness? It's kinda dulled by everything else and only makes a brief appearance. The overall longevity and projection isn't an issue for me but I have been asked by neighbors if im cooking up some kind of herbal medicine (lol..). So im guessing its pungent for many

It’s definitely not one of my favorite pineward scents. Their more sweet scents tend to be on the cloying side and unfortunately this is no different. Incredibly syrupy and sweet to the point where it’s a bit headache inducing. It’s like an autumn themed candle... not for me but if you like that kinda thing this is definitely something you’ll like.

Reminds me of a combined Lip Smacker scent I had as a kid called “Green Apple”, and the potpourri smell that emanates from the retail store Cost Plus’s air conditioning system. I’m picking up a barrel of apples, and a kind of mulling wine scent. Apple Tabac would make a wonderful candle, but less so for a perfume.

The opening is really nice blend of tobacco, spices and a mealy red apple just picked up from the tree to eat. In the drydown tobacco pretty much disappears and the apple becomes very sheer and watery. Ok simple fragrance, not mindblowing. Great longetivity.

The apple note in this is great. I get all the notes listed, but as with many Pineward scents, it felt a bit cloying and candle-like after a while. Definitely an outdoor, nighttime scent.

It smells like the apple scented kids suave from when I was a kid.

Opens to a scratch-and-sniff style synthetic red apple (a stronger version of the Christmas Wine top note) and fumey booze that I'm going to call applejack whisky for poetry's sake. No tobacco, though, and certainly no pine. Instead there is the same muddy-salty curry-like base note that ruined Christmas Wine for me. At least here it is lighter -- like immortelle. But immortelle doesn't pair well with apple, and this just does not work.

Echoing other reviews, while most of the Pineward offering are excellent (even if many of them seem a little too similar to one another), to me this just smells like a generic fall candle from home goods. Maybe would work better as a room spray, but not something I imagine most people seeking out Pineward would want to wear.

It really is like one of those red “apple orchard” candles. It also has a sort of grimy note in there. 6.4/10

It is a kid body wash & shampoo all in one smell

Apple Tabac FAT RED apple of the bat, imagine any apple-scented product that's what you're getting right now. The underlying booziness is not too much but noticeable, some un-discernible fruit peaks through but the apple going strong and I don't see it going away. Imagine an APPLE alcoholic drink that's overly sweet that the local chavs would drink in the park to get drunk on,. I don't like it but I can imagine some people adoring this the same way they would say *ugh* EROS.

If you took Nicole Miller for Men and increased the ingredient quality tenfold, you'd wind up with Apple Tabac. I see the argument people have made about it smelling like a Yankee Candle, but TheSuperSniffer's review below is in line with how this smells to me: like a walk through an orchard in mid October on a cool day. It's that velvety sweet woodiness of red delicious apples that have fallen from their trees and fermented in soil, the orchard leaves rustling through the air. I'm a sucker for apple notes, and this is one of the best I've ever smelled. The formula has been re-tooled this year to exclude the maple, and I'm good with that; maple would conflict and add unnecessary sweetness. Full bottle worthy and well worth the sticker shock.

On my skin Apple Tabac has three parts. First part is a lovely, wonderful, strong and dry tobacco. This is relatively the shortest part and dries down after 15-20 mins. It changes into fruity part, which in fact smells to me like dried apples my mom used when she was preparing a compote for christmas. Overall I don't relate Apple Tabac with christmas whatsoever. Last, but not least is the boozy part - the most interesting one IMO. It personally reminds me of hot tea with rum infused center, although I can't smell tea per se. Longevity is 6-9 hours, sillage is slightly above average. All in all I was sceptical about Apple Tabac, but it's a solid scent. It might smell like a scented candle to some, but personally I don't mind.

As some have said, more apple and spice than anything. My wife found it appealing but immediately said that she would love a candle that smelled like it and didn't assume that I would want to smell like it. She is right. It is nice, pleasing, , easy to wear, comfortable, autumnal and somewhat dark (all in a very good way) but I don't see myself wanting to wear it. I too would rather it be a room scent than a personal scent. You should reach out to this small-batch maker and try his stuff. I don't think it is a risky blind-buy. I haven't found a stinker yet.

I wanted to love this but it's too sweet on me. It goes on strong apple but with sweet notes that read as maple on me. Overall, it stays like this, very sweet, for an hour or so at which time I scrubbed. It smells too much like apple maple oatmeal flavoring on me. SOOO sweet. But, oh, man, still lasts after multiple scrubs, so great longevity. But apple maple all the way on me. Total skipper as I dislike maple unless it’s the solid candy. After many scrubs, it is a pleasant maple apple scent. I will stick to my all time fav, Hayride.

I tried a tiny spritz on my wrist and immediately realized this is not for me! It smelled like a holiday candle. I am very picky about apple scents, and red apple is my least favorite. I always find it sickly sweet. This one is also heavy on the coumarin, and it’s a cloying curry-like coumarin at that. I’ll have to try actually spraying a normal amount on my skin and attempting to wear it out. But, I’m gonna do that... next year, because I’ve had enough of this smell. Hopefully maceration will help my sample.
