Nocturnis

After having this in my collection for quite some time, I find myself going back to it over and over again, and upon further reflection (after being unsure about it before) I can confidently say: I love this fragrance. It’s definitely *out there* but I really get nostalgic about this scent. On the skin it’s almost a sweet boozy pine, very dark and alluring in a mysterious haunting way. It’s dark green, heavy, warm, almost animalistic, and sappy thick- almost herbal but I love it. If I had to describe this fragrance as a scene, I’d say it smells like your running for your life through a deeply haunted old pine forest at night while a creature, the stuff of nightmares, chases after you. Under your feet, shrubs and herbs are crushed and smushed into the wet fallen leaves that decorate the forest floor. Your heart is racing, and hearing the roaring of the creature behind you, you throw scraped and broken hands in front of your face as you pick up speed- sharp pine needles and branches hitting against your torn skin.

The new 2023 reformulation has changed nocturnis a lot. Adding more fir and sandalwood. The most noticeable changes is the top heavy fir dense and thick at top which is surprising given that conifer abs are super dense and won’t project like this does. The vintage florals and camphorous top has been toned down significantly. Only to be found in the mid. The former patchouli dominance which wasn’t straight patchouli but more or less the nuances of patchouli augmented by the florals, conifers, and camphor; this no longer exists. The touches of dark herbal and hints of smoke are mostly gone.

As a chamomile addict I really like this.... Torn between this and Caravansary really I can’t see why people are reacting so poorly to this I wonder what it smelt like before the reformulation. A past review said it was more herbal smoky and camphorous which sounds amazing but maybe that was too much for people. I think I would’ve liked it. But yeah this and bindebole and Caravansary and murkwood and perhaps snoqualmie are such sources of dreamy pleasure for me

My most favorite Pineward. Nocturnis is a mix of smoke, sappy green and black conifers, vintage balsamic florals, on dense moss, patchouli and enough tobacco to add deeper contrast. This blend is accessible and packed with complexity that to me marks the culmination of Nick’s best work to date.

i really dont understand why people hate on this one for me I smell a little bit of a minty scent with very soft/dark earthy notes 7.7/10

wish the "werewolf" were more present. needs more carnal furry animalic skank. got laid in this so its whatever.

I really like this fragrance. It reminds me of something that I'd wear outside in the middle of the night with the crisp night air. It reminds me of being on road trips with my grandparents in the sticks in the Irish countryside where all you can see is miles of side roads, blackness, fields and hedgerows, and trees and how crisp and almost peppery the night air is and how you can really feel it when you're breathing. I like how the mix of freshness, and muskiness, and spice all compliment each other. It also reminds me of like the forest floor at night time filled with pinecones and needles, dead leaves, moss, and small flowers. For me the pine, patchouli, bergamot, and sandalwood are the stand outs for me. I think they all blend together and make this very green, nature-like, almost cola scent. I think I need to wear it more to truly appreciate it but it's definitely a favourite for me! I think it compliments juniperis and autumnal quite well.

This is clearly the kind of fragrance that strikes everyone differently. For me, the pine leans in a menthol direction (which I can also read as a strong carnation if I try), underpinned by hay, patchouli, and tobacco. While all of those notes are identifiable, everything also integrates into a simultaneous impression of fresh and dark. It's either a man who's just applied aftershave after smoking a cigar in the woods, the remnants of a bonfire after a good rain (setting aside the total lack of smoky or petrichor notes here; I'm talking about a feeling), or a really well-sanitized funeral home, depending on how you think about it -- and it demands being thought about. And yes, I like it, though it's too distracting for any kind of everyday wear.

This one is...hmm. Started off with a nice pine scent, which I always enjoy. Then, that faded and I was left with what I believe to mostly be tobacco and juniper, which kind of smelled like pee on me. Underneath the pee aroma are some nice florals, which I like. All in all I think this comes off as a “kitchen sink” scent with a ton of different notes, and it doesn’t tell a “story” like a lot of the other Pineward scents do. I’ll set it to the side and try it again later. Edit: after trying it again and knowing what to expect, I like it

I don't get why people say this smells fecal, it's very patchouli-forward and coniferous. it smells like the color brown, maybe a little bit animalic. I'm only getting patchouli, fir, oak moss, and a bit of tobacco, it's definitely not refreshing. this is unisex, balanced between daring and dignified.

I like it fine but I struggle to smell anything past the woody notes. I know there’s something there because it definitely has aromatic qualities but it’s so far obscured by the strength of the pine and fir that I can’t make out anything specific.

normal pine but add diluted vicks vapor rub, sweetness, and patchouli. out of any pineward fragrance i've smelled so far, this would be the first one i'd gift to a man in my life

My first Pineward fragrance, and it did not live up to my (possibly unfair) self-hype. I was hoping for something primordial, or at least earthy, but this one goes in a lighter direction. There is that Polo-like pine accord, so if you like that, this one may work well for you. This has a vanillic/amber sweetness to it, however, which may have been included to give this a unisex vibe. Because I wanted something rough and masculine, this isn't a keeper for me. But I have several other fragrances from Pineward, so I'm sure some of them will fit the bill.

Omg wtf is this? Lol. I pickup animalic musk and some hay-geranium with a hint of pine and it stinks. They really put a wildly raging animal with rabies in a bottle. This is my 3rd least favorite of the house. Faul odor. But it's also very intresting all at once. Edit: the color of the juice in it looks acidic and septic. It matches the foul odor energy it has lmao.

I have loved many Pineward perfumes I tried so far, but this one is waaaay too floral on my skin... I barely get any pine and no oakmoss at all. It's well done and it's sophisticated but it's not what I wanted. A fancy floral patchouli.

Nope. No thank you. I really like this house, but this one's ROUGH. Tough to wear, and while it does settle down after a while, the initial blast is pretty alarming. In terms of aroma, there's definitely hay and chamomile, and they're in direct, violent competition with a tobacco accord that does not complement them one bit. Additionally, I'm getting, like, a sort of fuzzy soy sauce thing which I think has to do with the way the sandalwood is stacked over the patchouli and bergamot. There's also a sandpapery sensation that's hard to quantify and an accord I'm just going to call "crispy wasp nest" and let you interpret however you prefer. Then there's some dirt and a sort of moldy greenness lurking in the background like it's about to pop out and start shouting but it never does. Ultimately it all dies off surprisingly fast, which is great because when you first spray it, your brain immediately goes, "shit, I'm never getting this off." I don't know, I do appreciate that it's weird. I like weird, pretty much as a rule. But it's also just kinda muddy and formless and incoherent, and there's nothing pleasing enough about it to warrant re-applying after a preliminary wearing. Not a scent that I would personally recommend, but definitely be sure to sample other stuff from Pineward. Lots of other better options than this one.

So I own the entire Pineward line in samples. There are so many amazing and photorealistic scents in there. So many scents on what it smells like to bang a firefighter, or a lumber jack, or a priest as well. There are also a few that have a distinct muriatic acid smell, and this is one of them. It's there deep in the base notes I think. It's a lil fecal and a lil vomit and I would wager if done right, which is ALMOST is here, could be compelling. In this case, as with their Meadow Moss as well, I get a whiff of vomit. I can see why so many are saying it. The real question is what is it? I can't find a single offending note and between the two mentioned scents they only share the following notes: Meadow Moss: oakmoss, fir balsam Nocturnis: oakmoss, silver fir So perhaps a combination of the two in the right concentration? I get it though. I see y'all and I hear y'all.

This one didn’t work for me, there was a slight animalic undertone here that my nose didn’t enjoy. It’s definitely fresh patchouli heavy with spiced carnation and an herbal chamomile. The pine and fir offer an aromatic green freshness to the scent too. The florals here smell vintage, powdery, and slightly dusty, like they’ve been stored in an attic for a few years. I don’t think this scent is fundamentally bad but the notes feel disjointed and I just couldn’t enjoy the scent.

Smells like Shrek's swamp. It's dark, green, sweet, woody. Like deja noted here there is an "animalic" note that smells fecal to me. Either that or something rotten. Perhaps Shrek forgot to take garbage out. However, if you have patience, the stinky note goes away in about 2 hours and it smells better. My least liked scent from the house. If that "animalic" note was not there it would be a great scent.

super disappointing. At first I do get that carnation and what I think is the hay, and Its fairly interesting. Then the dry down comes and it smells like dusty, aged wax. Starts out very fresh but becomes unexpectedly powdery. Not a fan.
