Subalpine

Subalpine (like Pineward Icefall) does somehow manage to smell refreshingly chill, damp, and crisp, like a coastal forest walk on a foggy morning in the Pacific Northwest. Though the vetiver, sandalwood, and cedar notes might make this look like it smells like any number of other "green woody" fragrances, the fir and the moss stand out here, with the bergamot serving to amplify the citrus dimensions of the pine; everything else serves a grounding/rounding function, though I do find that the black pepper becomes a bit more prominent over time. I find the first thirty minutes of this fragrance delightful and refreshing--not as good as a morning forest walk, but an acceptable substitute for a work day. Unfortunately, Subalpine is one among a subset of Pineward fragrances that simply don't last, so that sensory memory is gone before lunchtime.

Sampling Pineward Perfumes Subalpine, a 2025 release and a fresh, woody, green, slightly spicy ensemble, including subalpine fir itself, black pepper, moss, vetiver, ambrette, and cedar, versatile enough to be a year-round signature-scent type of woody blend. It’s a wee bit moody and dirty—provocative, perhaps—but not in a way that seems disconnected from the note mix above. I quite like it, even though it does not make quite the same impression that some of the darker, bolder extrait varieties do. Still, it’s nice, a workable option through most seasons that is evocative and well-made, effectively at the intersection of spicy and fresh, dark and light, green and spicy. Subalpine is EDT concentration, with now-standard pricing of $250/150/95 for 100/52/32ml, sold in the US seemingly only via the house website, which at any given time carries the full available catalogue. It performs quite well, but is not as dense on the skin as any of the extraits (that I recall), fittingly, so the value is decent as it’s an EDT option with some weight, but it’s not as strong as most of the dark, woody options that comprise most of the extrait catalogue. 7 out of 10

Opens with light and airy evergreen tree branches, then over the course of 30 minutes it morphs into a musky ambrette seed dominant woody fragrance. Subalpine is in the same ballpark as Another 13 and similar ambrettolide perfumes, but with a more natural approach. This is one of the most office-safe of all the Pineward fragrances (Greymist and Meadowmoss being runners-up in that category), something that is unusual for a brand that is known for having quite challenging scents. I personally go for Pineward when I want something more challenging, but this is a good functional fragrance.

A Sandalwood-fir? This is intresting. The opening is aromatic similar to Dior Suavage (I loathe dior suavage) but dries down to a aromatic and light version of santal 33. Sandalwood, vetiver, cedar and fir scent. Nice & VERY lightweight dry woody scent. Edit: the more i spend time with it the more it smells like a freshly cutdown tree/ wood.

A refreshing, citrus-forward, spicy piney fragrance. Upon dry down, the citrus, pepper and green notes become more prominent while the pine recedes a bit. The citrus smells a bit sweet to me, like citrus candy or gummies, but still in a non-artificial way. Leans a bit more masculine imo.

It is a very interesting scent, especially for someone who spends a lot of time in the forest. I really love it, as it transports me back to my childhood. The longevity is average and the sillage is very weak.

green citrus with minimal wood. not bad, and i know i would like it more if i was more inclined towards citrus. definitely a lighter wear than some others in the forest set.

Subalpine, ... to be high, up in the mountains. Sampling this blindly as is my wont, without reading overly suggestive notes. This isn't quite like anything I've smelled before, ...which is always a plus. ...sandalwood, musk, a pungently sharp and aromatic conifer. Alright, I'll look at the notes. Certainly sandalwood, fir, and cedar, ...also bergamot, the dry, cold-pressed kind. I'm still going to argue there's much musk. The black pepper seems fractionated, only a sense of sharp freshness is left. The pungency grows more convolute with time, so maybe suggestions of vetiver and ambrette. Any 'mossy' greenness at the base is also light, but it does stay very woody. Subalpine does suggest a bright, sunny high-elevation scene, late summer. Cold, fresh, conifer-scented air, patches of melting snow, herbs drying in a high meadow, ...but the vegetation is relatively thin on this rocky peak. This is a mood scent, but a very wearable one. A complete rethink on the concept of 'freshie'.
