Fumidus

Black and white. Starts like a black burned tire cloud and then fades into a nearly white and quite earthy but very clean and clear vetiver. PROFVMVM ROMA is always tiptoeing on the line that divides simple from simplistic, but here, I feel that the mood is as good and as simple as it can be. This is barely a perfume. Two clearly detectable notes. Smoked birch and then vetiver. Whiskey? Not really. Other great and superfamous perfumes have a vetiver core with always a moltitude of satellite-notes gravitating around it, and it makes sense. Usually is better to follow the grammar of the olfactory composition rules. But here you have vetiver and only vetiver. And that is very unique. Imbarassingly minimalistic beyond every common sense. Vetiver root. Period. Having only one clearly detecteble note in the drydown can be a huge limit. With PROFUMVM ROMA everything is always natural and vetiver is a root that brings the memories of all the tiny nuances of earth and undergrowth. And when you can focus only on vetiver without any detectable backgrond noise you can have a very deep, naturally complex and interesting experience. So it is possible to feel the complexity of a specific natural landscape trough just one note. To me it only happends with FVMIDVS. Very persistent, light and minimalistic. The best vetivercentric fragrance around.

fumidus is about so much more than smoke! wonderful earthy vetiver performs a languid pas a deux with malt whisky and the smokey embers of a dyings birch fire. this is by far the most interesting of the entire PR line and is the only one i currently own (i did buy arso but it was too 'wussy' to rate as a smoke frag; just boring cedar mostly, so it got sold. bois d'ascese has replaced that niche in my wardrobe much better....). fumidus is quite linear but the proportions change, leaving the wearer with a gorgeous maltbarrelwoodsmoke vetiver to contemplate the cosmos. i respectfully and firmly assert fumidus as a top masculine, second only (imo) in that category to vintage guerlain. if you wish sycomore had more hair on its chest, try this out ;)

I could have sworn I wrote a review about this before. I must be going crazy, or I am reviewing too much lol. I distinctly remember asphalt near a basketball court memory. Sigh. There is no need to reiterate I suppose. This fragrance is for fragrance connoisseurs only. Tough guy fragrance. I use it as a palette cleanser. Don't get me wrong, this is very well done. It distinctly smells like smoke and burnt grass. And it is done so well the image gets burned in your brain. It's almost like the fragrance installs this memory into your mind and when you search for burning grass, an image of Fumidus pops up. I don't recommend if you are not a serious collector. If you are, I don't consider you serious if you don't have it in your collection.

This is my "going to war" perfume. If I have to be somewhere I don't want to be with people I don't want to see I'm busting this bad boy out. In the drydown this is one of the more refined and smooth vetiver fragrances I have put my nose on, but be warned there is nothing redeemable about the opening! I won't bother to describe it, smell is subjective but it is in no way appealing. I would only recommend this if you are a seasoned collector and you have a soft spot for oddities. I got mine after robes08's recommendation and I love having it in the collection, even though I seldom wear it.

This is lovely. Reminds me of Private Label, slightly. Kinda similar to Encre Noir's inky vetiver, but with some very peaty scotch thrown in. Most reviews make this out to be incredibly smokey, but I don't get a lot of smoke or burnt woods. It lasts a long while, but I feel I've already covered it with the two scents mentioned. Edit: Actually, maybe it's Sycomore I'm thinking of...just smells so familiar. Not every scent is designed to attract a sexual partner. This one is purely for lovers of the really raw, earthy vetivers.

The big bad boy in the eclectic Profumum Roma line of fragrances is this uber masculine offering which combines notes of rooty earthy vetiver with birch tar and scotch whisky for a dark potent juice that immediately reminds you of a distinguished nobleman sitting besides his fireplace with his scotch, pipe and a book. The scent starts off very smoky and strong and then mellows down to powdery wood. Eternal on skin and clothes. Not for everyone and must try before buy. Enjoy!

You are near a campfire, roasting some chestnut, drinking some good blend whisky, after an autumn small rain, in the afternoon. For me, this is a beast, this is eternal!!! I love it! Longevity it is eternal!!! Spray this on skin, or at least on dark clothes!! Attention it could stain! It is very powerful and also the sillage is enormous!! 8+ hours!!

I actually wish this were smokier and boozier. To my nose it's almost entirely vetiver with a bit of smoke and booze hanging around in the background. Fumidus is a one-dimensional scent, and doesn't change much after being sprayed. It lasts a decent amount of time and is fairly strong.

This is a charred masterpiece, plain and simple. It has a strikingly-dark, brooding personality- intense vetiver, black licorice, birch tar, a dab of scotch, a hint of fir. Passionate like a northern winter, and lovely- this ode to wood.

Rich earthy vetiver blast, with sweet boozey undertones in a halo of Birch. I love this, it's not overly smokey for me, but I have smelt and worn Beaufort London fragrances haha.

One of the best Whisky scents ever - full stop. VERY VERY peaty and like a single malt with an exceptional smoky kick. Easily one of the top ever for silage and longevity. VERY PUNGENT. Its not for me though as it is just a touch beyond wearable for any occasion - its like having a Formula 1 Ferrari for driving to work when you can just have a comfortable V12 Ferrari. A curiosity for sure - it also reminds me strangely but quite succinctly of my mums German Thick lentil soup with smoked meat (only alcoholic) - so much so that that is what ultimately spoils it for me - I think more of this than whiskey. It is something not listed in the notes which gives a slight vegetative kick. I have to laugh at the so called Whisky enthusiasts whom reckon they have expensive bottles and think this is nothing like... just because you have expensive bottles doesn't mean you're an expert... this reminds me of a Laphroaig or maybe a strong Talisker an Island Scotch which means its extremely smoky and peaty. I'm guessing you guys buy Johnnie Walker Green or King George which is an overrated blended Scotch and expensive only because it uses hops from sources no longer available... the fact that you didn't identify it as a single malt says a lot... Profumum Roma is a brand whom I respect and now enjoy having sampled this as my introduction but for a wearable above average Whisky scent (though different) I now cherish Le Dandy as I find it wearable anytim. I also find Slumberhouse Baque to be an awesome smell - fruity and a bit of chocolate like sniffing a rich Scotch out of the bottle and also D.S & Durga Hylnds Spirit of the Glen, though this too is a bit of a challenge as it is quite medicinal and borderline though impressive - I'm still undecided on this. Le Dandy is like a Whisky blend in a glass diluted with ice and Durga is like a pungent blended Scotch with a sharp alcoholic sting like its fresh from the bottle albeit a cheap whisky. This is nothing like a City on Fire as is suggested here which is a dreadful rubber with tar and smoke (why you would wear something that smells like you are a fireman returning from a blaze is beyond me). In common is only a strong smokiness. If you like Whisky/Whiskey this is a must to try but be warned it is not a blind buy. Happy Smelling

I ordered a sample of this fragrance based on the notes, with whiskey being the prominent note. That worked for me as I am a self proclaimed "whiskey guy". Meaning that whiskey is my drink of choice and it has been a fun journey sampling the different whiskeys of the world. For those of you out there that have shied away from whiskey, but you enjoy fragrances, I highly encourage you to try a few whiskey tastings. You will find that, like fragrances, whiskeys are made up of different olfactory notes and flavor profiles. Pour a small amount of whiskey in a glass, place it beneath your nose and breath in through your mouth. You will discover a variety of olfactory notes, just like in the fragrance world. The opening of Fumidus was a bit if a shock to me. I expected this to be a whisky lover's dream, but instead I was greeted by the charred rafters of a burned out building. The same opening vibe that I get from A City On Fire or Straight to Heaven Extreme or Montecristo. Not a bad opening, but not what I was expecting. If you are a whiskey lover, there are a few things that you do understand. Where the whiskey is made, what the mash is and how the distling process is set up determines the whisky... Scotch, Irish, Japanese or Bourbon. Also, a little water can open up up a whiskey, bring out its full flavor. So why do I say this? After a few hours, Fumidus begins to change and mellow a bit on my skin. It goes from a charred wood to a very heavy, peaty and smokey scotch from the Islay area of Scotland. Think Laphroaig or Lagavulin. I get good projection and longevity on my skin. I see Fumidus as more of a causal scent than a formal scent. Although this is marketed as unisex, it leans much more masculine to my nose. If you are a fan of smokey / peaty Scotch, you will LOVE this fragrance. Try a sample. But it is NOT for everyone.

I hate when this happens Before a couple of years I’ve passed by a perfume shop in my travels That was before I knew anything about the brand The sales associate was adamant that I should try this scent And I did I was impressed back then when I wore it on skin It had vetiver and burnt wood or a little smoke aka birch wood It was interesting and I felt it was different at the time After 4 years I started looking for it and it was already discontinued by then and very hard to buy Thankfully I happened to travel to the same city and passed by the shop again And as I live and breath the last bottle was there waiting for me I was over the moon she asked if I would like to try it and I refused I was so convinced with it until I returned to my mainland Wore it started wondering what is going on the only thing I could smell is encre noir or in other words sycamore I was devastated The saying don’t meet your hero’s is sometimes true I thought I had my hero in my hands and it wasn’t worth it anymore Always second guess always try again until you are satisfied

When I put this on, I get an initial burst of smoke and - carrots? The carroty scent disappears almost immediately. The smoke is hard to pin down. It's halfway between woodsmoke and exhaust fumes. It has an industrial sharpness, but not to the point of evoking burnt rubber. It doesn't remind me of a smoky Scotch. In fact, I took a sniff of a bottle of Ardbeg to compare the two, and Fumidus is a much dryer scent than I get from the Scotch. It's a very outdoorsy fragrance, and not just because of the smoke; something in it reminds me of a tent, unfolded and assembled after spending a day rolled up in a backpack. There's a mild coniferous scent present as well. I smell some peppery incense towards the end of the dry-down. The fragrance doesn't change much as time goes on. The smoke might get a bit more tarry. I like this, but I don't think I'd wear it much. It's a bit thin, as opposed to some fuller, spicier smoke scents I've tried. The most interesting note is the tent-fabric smell.

This stuff is truly amazing. Love it or hate it, it's a scent that slaps you across the face, shoves you back against the wall, and DEMANDS that you pay it the respect it deserves. I can't imagine ever wearing it out, but I regularly smell it and respect the bejeezus out of it. It's a really impressive scent. Kudos Profumum. UPDATE #1: So after saying I couldn't imagine myself wearing it out, this morning I said "WTF!". Really enjoyed it. Overpowering when you put it on, it takes a bit to calm down. the base notes are superb though - the smokey tobacco-ish mixed with some sweetness, presumably out of the vetyver. I might wear this again, though don't imagine I'll run out and buy a bottle... UPDATE #2: Okay, shoot me. I got a bottle.

This has a super sharp, very off putting opening where it smells like something has been cremated in the prehistoric forest societies of Scotland. Think of rain, greyness, tar, ash, coal. But after that it calms down into a smooth, bitter, classy vetiver scent. People saying it's "unwearable" are very much exaggerating, or haven't tried actually wearing it. Projection is weak, sillage is acceptable (I expect way more from an extrait bottle that costs 240 pound, with very heavy notes), longevity is absurd (24+ hours, through showers).

It's a genious scent! The smoke is stunning, overwhelming, breathtaking. I imagine a tent pitched somewhere in the Canadian wood land, the fire will be lighted, the smoke beginns to draw - this first smoke cloud is the Fumidus. It's the most inconvenient perfume among all i tested till now. I would never wear it by myself, but i can imagine a man doing that. I must admit, i tested it only on strip, not on skin. Possibly would get another outcome (as meama said in his review)

This might be the closest representation of a camp fire I have smelled, including Hyde, T-Rex, Beaufort stuff etc etc. It's fresher like fresh wood smoke straight off the fire than many campfire like scents, its not sticky and resinous its dry airy but incredibly smoky. I see why encre noir has been picked as a similar as a lot of the dryness is coming from vetiver. So imagine that but massively amped in smokiness.

The Dominant note in this fragrance is clearly Wild Indian Vetiver root (Ruh Khus)and it smells very natural. In fact I have a bottle of Ruh khus that smells almost exactly the same. Fumidus might be a little more refined and toned down than just straight wild vetiver, but not enough to warrant the price. Save yourself some money and get yourself some ruh khus oil.

33)what an opening! the barbecue is on fire! If you survive to that, and if you have try it on your skin, the parfum will evolve to a nice vetiver , very earthy, rooty. I really would like this perfume was more about the idea of smoke, it is unfortunately a lot more traditional than its opening would suggest. I like.

A very peaty scotch/whisky that evolves into a light vetiver. Like the smoke peat salty bonfire but annoys me with the Islay peat profile. Burnt tires and peanuts. But can be good for the right situations. Good for whatever you might need for protection or the right situation. Keep it for the right day or night.

About 30 minutes ago I over-applied the most powerful fragrance on the planet. I really enjoy the first 10 minutes, bracing as they may be. Birch, giving the impression of burned wood in wet soil. The dry down so far has been mostly vetiver, which I don't care for. Amazing sillage. RIP me...

the best earthly vetiver! an intense accord of smoke, roots and some kind of masculine liquor. A masterpiece for gentlemen better then many other smoke scents; this one is natural and evocative for braves 7.5/10

I have a similar issue with this to mine with lapsang souchong tea, in that the intense wood-smokiness is too reminiscent of BBQ . It's a good unusual smell though, dry and savory.

This fragrance is truly amazing. I adore it, it's a scent that slaps you across the face, shoves you back against the wall and commends you to show your respect.

This is not for the faint of heart. The opening is a pungent blast that initially reminds me of a solvent. If someone passes out and you don't have smelling salt, this stuff will do the trick. After about 10/15 minutes I get extinguished campfire but mixed with 'whiskey' but not a first barrel bourbon. It is more a bottle of whiskey where the cork had gone moldy and ruined it with a moldy smell. From there the moldy smell contributes more. It is that smell that if you left your wash in the wash machine for 2 days because you were too lazy to transfer it to the dryer (or too hungover from the aforementioned moldy cork whiskey you binged on anyways because it was your only option). You dry your clothes anyways and now your shirts has a sour mildew smell. Another image that comes to mind. You live is an older wood frame house that has a crawl space and you need to fix a leaky water pipe that who knows how long it has been in that state, but damn if you are going to pay a plumber when you can do it yourself You put on dirty coveralls (from the last time two years ago you needed to go down there), get on your belly and start crawling into the dark and damp crawlspace that is so small it reminds you of the movie 'the Great Escape'. The smell down there is this damp moldy smell that I get from Fumidus. Or even being is the galley of an 80 year old wooden sailboat that has been 'round the world several times...the moldy smell that the true sailor loves!! In other words, a real man's scent! What is not to like!! A masterpiece!! Then finally, the mold bids adieu and you are left with an interesting but pleasant (in its own way) vetiver that I find unique. But you have to work to get to this point. No respectable collection would be complete without this number. Enjoy the drydown, you earned it.

So this is my major problem with Fumidus. On the cap, I can smell the whiskey, I can smell the birch, I can smell the vetiver. On my skin... ashtray. It's not even a fancy ashtray, like one of those cuban cigar ashtrays, no, just plain Marlboro ashtray that annoys you because nobody's emptying it, and it's just overfilling with cigarette stubs. So even if you are a smoker... you don't want that smell on your skin. This fragrance was done in 1996, the same year when Acqua di Sale came out, so I get that back then a scent like this could be considered a niche gem, but today when there is so much more offerings in that smokey tobacco range, this just feels unfinished and unrefined, and it's very hard to recommend it, especially when you have something like Amouage Royal Tobacco in similar price range that's actually wearable.

I got 2 distinct phases from my 3 tries of a sample of Fumidus. 1) Opening to early mid lasts about 1-2 hours when it smells like smoke from burning oak leaves. There is also a touch of medicinal Iodine in the background. Tolerable for me, but not very nice. 2) The mid to dry down reminds me of lots of wet maple leaves, mostly down on the ground. This sweet leafy smell is like whiskey. Not just poured whiskey. Whiskey in an open glass after hours of air time. The alcohol is gone, but the remaining whiskey still has a pleasant smell. Phase 2 lasted about 8 more hours. NOT a blind buy, but an interesting experience nonetheless.

This is the single most challenging and bold fragrance that i ever tried...this smells like a smoky burnt tire. I get whiskey in the opening, smoke and burnt tire smell. Its for a dude who wears leather jackets and drives a Harley Davidson bike. Its waaaay out of my comfort zone.

At first spray and smelling it at close range is not pleasant at all. After a few minutes in the air it’s an enjoyable experience. Very dark fragrance. Not sure where you would wear it honestly. 3.5/5.

Smoky booze, with vetiver as support. Not a fan, and for booze, as someone as stated before, Akro Malt is superior, and so is JdE Alcools.

Burning garbage? I wouldn't go that far. To be blunt it smells like foliage and roots that have been damp all autumn in a compost pile that was briefly doused with lighter fluid and set ablaze, but mercifully put out by a hot-boxing of car exhaust depleting all the oxygen and snuffing the flames. This is gross I'm sorry folks. I like most of Profumum's offerings and the ones I don't, are personal, not because they smell bad. Then there is this monster. As to the whiskey... As a whiskey lover I have to say this smells nothing like any whiskey I've ever had. None of my bottles have no resemblance to this. None. If your whiskey smells like this then you need to change your brand. Now. I cant rate the scent/projection/sillage/longevity because I couldn't make it past the first 30 minites. A scrubber in the strongest possible terms. Would I buy a full bottle? Hell no. No thank you. Please don't give me this as a gift. Please don't wear it near me. Can be used to induce vomiting in an emergency.

I got recommended this by the perfume shop assistant and I was intrigued. I expected insane longevity and massive projection, since it's a Profumum Roma fragrance, in which regard it did deliver. However the scent profile is a different story. It does have a very smoky, woody and earthy whisky accord with some burning woods but it's so intensely smoky that it made me laugh out loud as I was sniffing it because it reminded me of bacon or a roast being grilled. If you want to smell like a bacon-grease fire, then this is for you! But all jokes aside, this is a very challenging scent, I don't get a lot of whisky, maybe in the first hour. Overall, I would never wear this, but it is remarkable and those who like the intensely ashy, smoky, slightly boozy scent profile will probably enjoy this.

I tend to really enjoy smoky fragrances, and I love Profumum Roma, so I really wanted to like this... But... This isn't so much "smoky" as it is "ashy". It honestly smells like a cigarette butt to me. As if someone put out a cigarette in a glass of whisky. It's dry and kind of harsh and honestly not very pleasant at all. It gets a bit warmer and smoother in the drydown, but not enough to save it in my opinion. This is absolutely the Profumum Roma fragrance that I like the least, by far.

I got a vial of this and wore it twice. I would have liked to try it a few more times to really understand it but it gives me a headache. I hate it at first, when it's first applied, it's like medicine and booze, but not in a good way. It dries down to something strange and pungant. It's almost like someone drank cheap whiskey on an empty stomach and passed out. Very medicinal. I don't detect anything leathery. This is one of the few scents I can only describe as interestingly-gross.

Arid beyond belief on my skin, which I was surprised to discover, since I love the look of the notes. On me, it smelled like a charred log. I asked my fiance to test it on himself (since he regularly wears woody orientals) and it was even drier on him. Even though that note isn't listed, on him it smelled like a cedar chest, and not a cedar tree. I will re-test it in cold weather.

I typically like smoky, leathery, and woody scents. I don't mind smelling like a campfire or a BBQ; I love Hiram Green's Hyde, or D.S. Durga's Leatherize, neither of which are smells that are crowd pleasers. But this smokiness is so sharp and bitter that it's a hard pass for me. To me, it smells like a dead mouse wrapped in 3-day old cigarette smoke.

At the opening he slaps me with a scent of burnt tire on a steaming asphalt after a shower of peaty whiskey. In a short time it dries dark, underground, drier than ash, dirty with vetiver and raw cedar. Like a leather jacket left in the burning cockpit of a crashed car. (1966)The dirty, the ugly, the bad.

An old moldy bag of almonds. Look, I can appreciate this for what it is, but if this is what vetiver smells like then I have to admit it's on my gag list. Sorry folks, I'm not a fan.

Seems it's a love or hate thing with this scent-- to me it smells like someone spilled some Scotch into an ashtray full of cigarette butts. Had to wash it off.

Smoky birch, whiskey aspects for the leather on a base of vetiver. The smell of burned tires for sure. For hardcore guys.

If anyone actually wears this fragrances you need to ask them if they are OK, because if you wear this, it is a cry for help. This is the most harsh, pungent, unbearable scent I have ever smelt. It smells like you have your nose up to a whisky bottle, while standing in the most awful dank dive bar, not a hip cool edgy dive bar, the type of dive bar that still allows people to smoke inside and has had cigarette ash build up over 50 years in the carpet and its never been cleaned....... Just awful

I seriously don't get all these people here (& elsewhere) complaining about this perfume being "just far too smoky". I mean, what the hell did you expect from a perfume that is named 'FUMIDUS', I ask you ? (Which, by the way, if you've not yet quite worked it out, actually translates as smoky/smoked/smoking in Latin). So how could you really have expected anything less ?? Or indeed repudiate or mark it down for being exactly as it advertises !? To deliberately choose to sample a perfume named 'SMOKY', and then to bitterly complain that it's simply 'too smoky' is just ridiculous. - (I even read one review which stated that it was just unnecessary to add the "liquid smoke accord" to the perfume). I mean, WTF ?? There are many unsmoked vetivers out there for you, go and sample one of those. If you chose 'Fumidus' then you should expect nothing less than a heavily smoked something, in this case a boozy vetiver. Simple isn't it !? Without the 'smoke' it would just simply not be 'Fumidus' but something else entirely. There is more than enough less interesting straightforward vetiver scents. Ok, now that I've calmed down a little, Fumidus is at heart a vetivert scent BUT not your more usual washed-out stripped vetiver, a virile blend of true unneutered vetiver drenched with delicious balsamic peat scotch whisky and infused with the darkness of smouldering birch smoke. Personally, I think it's exactly the peaty malt & thick birch tar note/accord which makes this fragrance what it is, it lends it intrigue and sets it apart from other 'wishy-washy' vetiver-scentric 'fumes. Some vetiver plants/roots are intrinsically smoky in character like the Javan variety (in contrast to the Haitian which is less rooty, more grassy and far 'cleaner' in scent profile.) Here with Fumidus they've just taken that specific natural earthy/smoky facet of the root and run with it. And if that weren't enough piled on loads of birch logs all charred and asmoke for a little extra fire. Resulting in a scorched but also rich, deep and uncompromising perfume. When I sample a perfume named 'Fumidus' I do so hoping, hell, expecting that it will be just that - gloriously smoky. Which this certainly is, and in abundance (Yay !) - Personally I think whilst not exactly an 'easy' perfume it's nevertheless excellent stuff ! (I do suggest it might take some a little time to appreciate it's beauty, but well worth the effort - a little perseverance will be rewarding.) It's without a doubt one of my faves out Profvmvm's fine oeuvre. One of their best for sure IMO, though certainly not for everyone. It should go without say that 'smoke-phobics' best keep well away of course. :)

This I got a luckyscent sample maybe 5 years ago and thought I hated it..Well I did..Till l I revisited this sample and thought WTH?? Juice is practically black & red when you hold it to the light!! That could be enough to describe it right there alone!! I thought my bottle of JoVoy Private label was my King of Vetiver, But now in my cabinet sets a new one! This isn’t the Vetiver grass It’s the dirty root of the Vetiver & something about the juice is making me think dark red kinda like the color. Some on here are back & forth on if it’s boozy & there’s something else I can’t put my finger on, It may be!! Call me crazy, But I own Orto Parisi Terroni & I see some similarities although they’re different..But those who think Terroni Is a beast ain’t seen nothing yet! I Kinda think this is something for the collector who has a lot and is still searching for something & can look on here for one good review out of every 15 lol..You have to know how to mist this on..Profumum Roma has great pressurized sprayers, & This one can definitely be found discounted..I’m glad I revisited this one & ended up with myself a bottle!
