Proraso Red After Shave

It's hard for me to describe exactly how much I love the scent of Proraso Red. It's a wonderful, clean, fresh, soapy sandalwood fragrance with only the slightest hint of a powdery note. If you've smelled Pal Zileri Sartoriale, it's VERY similar in scent but the Sartoriale is quite a bit stronger. AOS Sandalwood is also very close in scent, although AOS Sandalwood is far stronger than both and in fact, one of the strongest EDT fragrances that I've ever encountered. The only downside to the Proraso Red aftershave is that because it's an aftershave, it's not going to project heavily and will retract to become a skin scent within about 4 hours or so. Still, in close quarters, people will still be able to smell you very well, without a problem. To help extend the life of the fragrance, I've been using the shaving soap not only to shave with but as a shower soap as well. It forms an excellent lather (after all, it's soap) and the scent lingers for a surprisingly long time. This may be because the pores are more open in the hot shower and absorb the scent into the skin. Additionally, I use the aftershave all over, like a body lotion as well and it works out just fine, because you can be extremely liberal with the aftershave and no one is going to get choked out. Sometimes, I'll use it in conjuction with Pinaud's Bath Talc on my arms and body under a t-shirt. Yes, it does add considerably to the powderiness but it also makes you smell extremely clean, fresh and attractive. Another way I've found to extend the scent quite well is to layer it with either Sartoriale or AOS Sandalwood. Essentially, it depends on the scenario I'm wearing it for. Sartoriale has strength but it's not overwhelming, so if I'm going to work, I'll layer it with Sartoriale on occasion but if I'm not in close quarters in the workplace, I'll occasionally use the AOS Sandalwood, as the fragrance is exceptionally strong. As if things couldn't get better, Proraso Red after shave is very inexpensive. You can get a bottle for under $20 or even under $15, if you look around. This fragrance is LOVE to the n'th degree for me. Without question, one of the best, if not THE best fragrance I've ever smelled. The only way it could become better is if they were to release a cologne version of it as well. ** UPDATE ** I found that by using the shaving soap in the shower and the after shave as more of an all over body splash (chest, underarms, etc) I'm getting many more hours out of this than I'd originally thought. While the projection doesn't increase considerably and stays more along average lines, the longevity has increased considerably. I'm finding that I'm still getting whiffs of the fragrance, although VERY lightly at about 8-10 hours later, which is wonderful. It's very clean and completely inoffensive.

Creamy, spicy, resinous and slightly sweet sandalwood. There's no fragrance I can point to that smells like this, but this works well with other spicy fragrances such as but certainly not limited to: Spicebomb Extreme, Gucci Envy for Men, La Nuit De L'Homme, Armani Code Absolu, and Amouage Interlude Man. It's an amazing scent for what it is, an aftershave and as such you have to understand that this thing can be bought for about $10 and is available at grocery stores in Italy, so it's not going to live up to your expectations if you're unable to calibrate them to fit with what you're smelling and be realistic. To me, a $4 aftershave from Walgreens can be a 10/10 just as much as a niche masterpiece like the aforementioned Amouage can be, and that's because they may both be brilliant at what they're attempting to accomplish. With Proraso Red, it's a brilliant and very inexpensive scent that's honestly intoxicating for the 2-3 hours that it can be detected on my skin. Oh, and this is actually a really great aftershave too if you're into shaving, this is so much more nourishing for your face than the stuff you can buy in drugstores in the US for the most part. You can buy it in a set with the Proraso Red shaving cream and pre-shave for $32 if you're into wet shaving, which is a really great value.

I've got a bottle of Sun Organic brand Australian Sandalwood oil that I bought a few years ago when I was attempting to make a fragrance of my own, and this product smells virtually the same to me. Which is not necessarily a bad thing as far as I'm concerned; I actually love this fragrance, but it's not the same barbershop sandalwood smell you would get from some brands. (which sounds very weird now that I think about it, considering Prorasso has an entire line of men's products based on this very scent) If you've never smelled Australian Sandalwood before, it can be a bit difficult to describe. But as best I can describe it, it's a pure sandalwood smell, minus the incense shop or barbershop feel to it you would normally get with a sandalwood fragrance, with a touch of what my brain keeps telling me is fresh cut cedar wood for some insane reason. It's not soapy by any means at all, but it is fresh, lively, and by George manly smelling without crossing the line of being in-your-face about it. All in all, this is an excellent product, and products like it are the reason I'm becoming a Sandalwood fanboy.

i tried it at my barbershop and i like it a lot. nice sandalwood, a bit of talcum, so masculine and well blended. the post-shave is great with no irritations. of course it hasnt the same quality of taylor of old bond street sandalwood but the difference of price is huge, u can find the proraso red at 13-14euros for 400ml, so price/quality ratio is fantastic. the performance is not great but we're talking about an aftershave, so dont expect great longevity and sillage. i hope proraso will make a cologne based on this product. i can also recommed the shaving cream of the proraso red line: great lathering, nice fragrance and the price is very low. great aftershave!! brava proraso! my vote:8

I'm absolutely in love with this, it's a comfort thing for me...a reserved but rich and soapy-spicy sandalwood. Clean, a little powdery, and just an insane pleasure to both smell and wear (especially after a wet shave with their matching shave soap/cream). I also wear it just by itself as my primary SOTD because it's perfectly versatile and has good longevity for an aftershave. The quality is surprising for how inexpensive this stuff is (~$16/100ml) and I'll continue to have this as a staple in my wardrobe forever. There's something to be said about beauty in simplicity and quality ingredients and both certainly resonante here. An immensely rewarding aftershave experience. Big fan here!

Ah yes, the Red Line from Proraso is just shaving bliss. From the soap to the after shave, it is just lush, sandalwood opulence. I love everything about this aftershave splash, even the bottle! After a shave this stuff does the trick. It soothes and tones the skin all while leaving a great scent. It all feels and smells so warm even after you've hit the streets, Red is long lasting for an aftershave and can on some days last for an hour or two (the sandalwood and shea oils used in it are of a good quality). So if you like a good wet shave from time to time and you want a real affordable and quality creamy, sandalwood aftershave, than look no further than Red by Proraso

Reviewers on sites like Maggard and WCS will tell you the scent is gone in <30 min. In my experience it actually has legs for an aftershave. 2-3 hours for me, though it should be noted that the sillage is in fact no more than a skin scent past the 30-45 min mark. That being said if your wearing a sandalwood dominant scent like Art of Shaving Sandalwood & Cypress, or any scent that is bolstered by sandalwood, this is a fantastic AS that will help build and/or support the scent rather than interfere IMHO. Post shave feel is above average also. Happy shaving!

Bought the Proraso Red shaving soap last year and wished I had bought the after shave then. Fast forward a year, I go donate blood and as a surprise bonus, get a gift card for $15, so searched, saw this and pulled the cord. Shaved tonight (even though I did not really need to), splashed some on the face and arms, and I’m in sandalwood heaven. Kudos to FirstSense for providing some scents that compliment Proraso Red. Wife does not like it, but I’m surrounded by a fragrant cloud of sandalwood goodness.

The perfect day starter after a good fresh shave. Smells great and smoothens the skin perfectly. After that I apply a good strong barbershop eau de toilette or eau de parfum and I'm ready to go and face the world. Proraso has Spice&Wood cologne for a perfect combination. But there are a lot of good barbershop fragrances available. For example Versace Homme or Alvarez Gomez Barberia (excellent ginger cinnamon eau de parfum from Spain) combine greatly with this nice warm sandelwood aftershave.

Great old school barbershop aftershave does exactly what it says on the bottle. The oils in it moisturise your face, the Sandalwood gives it a Lovely warm fragrance ideal for winter. Anyone looking for a power projector are missing the point this is a classic aftershave like Prorraso Green it's meant to help skin recovery from shaving not knock down your next conquest with a bulldozer. It's scent is pleasing warm and light but best of all helps repair a daily hacked face.

I like Proraso’s products and this is no exception. I find this to be more suitable for the colder season, with the creamy woodiness. The Shea oil feels protective on the face. It has the more old school smell. Stays a few hours on your chin....skin!😁 I also own proraso green which I feel is better for the hot months, cooling without any overpowering smell. Anyway — I recommend it. It’s inexpensive and does the job well!

I was looking for a sandalwood-based a/s to wear on days when I'm wearing woody fragrances like Chanel Egoïste, Aramis Aramis, Caron Yatagan, or YSL Kouros and this fit the bill exactly. This is a classic, spicy/soapy/oily sandalwood, both bold and traditional, as well as a thoroughly satisfying aftershave with nice toning qualities. Delightful for the price with very solid performance.

Although less-so since the rebirth of beard culture (Proraso Green was selling for about $4 a bottle and is now up to $12ish, damn hipsters), this is a really great value for what it is. Sharp, spicy, sandalwood front that smooths out into a sweet, powdery sandalwood-and-rum finish, which lasts about three hours or so, on me. ---------------- 10/10 as an aftershave 7/10 as a daily scent

This is the easily best sandalwood scent in my collection. It's an aftershave and lasts maybe an hour where you can get whiffs of it without trying. Two hours on a really good day. It's just as good at soothing the skin after a close shave. Proraso really needs to issue this in cologne and edt versions like Maurer & Wirth does with Tabac. And edp would also be welcome.

For a splash this is amazing stuff. Smells like a million bucks and has actually decent performance. Havnt smelt anything like it. Just pure sandalwood but heavenly made And it doesnt cost that much very happy 9/10 After few days wearing it. Ive noticed it doesnt last that long but my god its a couple of hours of bliss

I’m a woman and I love the way this stuff smells on me. I use it liberally like a body oil since it isn’t strong. It’s a simple, comforting, cozy sandalwood. Warm, enveloping, and a bit spicy, like there’s a hint of benzoin. This is a must try if you enjoy sandalwood, especially for the price.

I just love Proraso Red. I usually shave with Proraso Red shaving soap and finish with Proraso Red after shave. As an After Shave Lotion it is really great, smells wonderful and make my skin soft. The ladies at work loves it too, and so does the wife at home. Great compliment giver

Very rich creamy woody spicy exotic Sandalwood aftershave. It doesn't smell cheap flat artificial woody, but rather stuffy considering it's just an aftershave, but at the same time it's light and airy.

Hands down favourite after shave lotion, smells like a sweet, sandalwoody designer fragrance, and has excellent hydration qualities because of its oils. Would, and will definetly re purchase, 10/10.

A very pleasant surprise, I added some of the aftershave to an atomizer to be able to give me a refresher spritz now and then. I have worn this to work a few times with great results.

Sandalwood and spices, natural, creamy, rich...fantastic aftershave. Great classic classy aftershave. Smells strong initially but doesn't last much more than 30-60 minutes.

Sandalwood plain and simple. This is best to be worn during the fall and winter months. This is a aftershave and works well for it's intentions. However, compared to the Clubman Aftershave Lines the Proraso aftershave may only last a hour if that. However they do feel better on the face after a good shave. Overall the scent is very gentlemen like and for some reason reminds me of Aqua Velva Musk but again does not last as long. Bottom line....this is an aftershave. The manufacturer doesn't position it in any other way. Works as it should. Doesn't deserve to be evaluated as an EDC, EDT or EDP. Congratulations to those who get 4 hours of longevity and can claim strong sillage. It doesn't for me but no complaints. It has a beautiful scent (for those who enjoy sandalwood) but lasts no more than 5 minutes on my face...cannot be detected by anyone around me after that time. Smooth, clean and pleasant. That's all one can ask of a product like this. As an aftershave....two thumbs up!

This is a fragrance I have grown to love. I thank Fragrantica users who recommended it on the forum, otherwise would not have known about it. Proraso red is a sublimely smooth, creamy/ woody fragrance which exudes understated elegance. I find it very versatile, but prefer it as a safe work fragrance. It took a while for me to appreciate it, but now I cannot fault the fragrance for quality or its performance. Not an ‘old man’ fragrance by any means but also not your typical fragrance rocked by twenty somethings. A great hidden gem.

Proraso red.... like all Proraso products it has a decent quality. An oily natural sandalwood scent with a touch of powder which lasts quite long for an aftershave. I agree that Ludovico Martelli (The maker of Proraso, Marvis and Tenax products) should offer an EdC or EdT version. The unfortunate part is that it used to be good value for money. But it now sells for 12US$ or even 28AU$ in many cases. Come on....really?! In countries like Italy or Germany they throw it at you....that's how inexpensive it is.

Got this from Ebay based on reviews here. I haven't visited a Barber shop in close on 35 years but this reminds me of the days that I used to go with my dad to get a haircut back in the early 70s. Lovely soapy sandalwood that as I approach the age of 60 is a wonderful nostalgia trip. Lasts 2 to 3 hours but still get the odd whiff now and then afterwards. Nice fresh soapy feel after a shave and for the price, a no brainer. Very enjoyable

if you have ever wondered what a vintage Italian barbershop smelled like, this is it. It is a very soft, powdery sandalwood. The first splash is a bit soapy, but it dries down to an addictively warm scent with a hint of balsamic. It is an inexpensive and pleasing sandalwood scent to keep on hand. Proraso Red lasts 3-4 hours on my skin and a few hours longer on my clothing.

Strong long-lasting and comforting fragrance on the body. It deposits a bit of film, surely meant to sooth the face, but by happenstance keeps the scent on my arms. In Europe it comes in 400ml glass bottles and is a good value. Build on it with sandalwood, even Shalimar or Samsara.

Perfect no nonsense allrounder, first splash smells super clean and quickly develops to creamy sandalwood that wears close to the skin. Stays round for good few hours. Great for subtle put together impression.

This is fine. It's a nice aftershave, but the positive reviews here are really overblown - the fragrance is just as fleeting and mild as any aftershave, and while it's pleasant it's not amazing.

Buy a quality blade, spend a little extra on a high-end shaving cream (I recommend Art of Shaving or Proraso), and top it off with this gem right here. I always used to wonder why "after shave lotion" was called "lotion" when it was came out of the bottle as a watery liquid. Now I understand. Proraso is a viscous, thick liquid that smells like I imagine how a1920s Italian barber shop would.. It smells like luxury. Soothes right down to the dermis. Not for boys who want to smell trendy. This is the real deal. Makes me thankful that I have the God-given privilege of shaving every day.

if they made this scent into an edt concentration and sell it for 30-40 dollars, this would be perfect and i assume a lot of people would buy it. this is a sweet sandalwood. like a mixture of sandalwood and vanilla with a hint of powdery notes. same goes for the green aftershave by proraso as well. just make an atomizer and increase the concentration, you will have 2 solid offerings. both are very hard to dislike and likely to get you compliments. green in spring and summer, red in autumn. in winter (very cold days) this would not perform well though. not a strong enough smell to cut the cold. all in all, the scent is very good and of higher quality than you would assume. perfect aftershave.

This is an incredible Italian aftershave for only about $20 that smells like authentic creamy and slightly sweet sandalwood. That's basically all it smells of, and it smells amazing. The scent lasts about 3 hours, which is moderate as far as aftershaves go. The aftershave also makes your face feel very good after a shave. Really perfect when paired with dark or woody barbershop fragrances, especially Geo F. Trumper's Sandalwood cologne, Proraso Wood and Spices EDT, and Acqua di Parma Colonia Oud. 5/5

This is a very mediocre olfactory creation, and it came as a surprise to me, since in Italy one can easily find cheap drugstore products that smell really good. As an aftershave it is ok, and if splashed on clothes one can smell it for many hours but eventually, I think that this is an unsuccessful attempt to creat something with character. The shaving cream works well, but not better than "Tabac" (for example) which on top smells 1.583.000 times better. -ΙΩΝ

Absolutely beautiful aftershave that makes you feel like a million bucks and a true gentleman after application. The woods and sandalwood are beautiful in this one. Doesn't smell remotely cheap. Timeless smelling and elegant. Gorgeous aftershave with actually really good longevity with moderate sillage the first hour!

@The Gent Scrap all 17 of those and get a bottle of either Rogue Perfumery's Mousse Illuminee or their Bon Monsieur along with their matching Recovery Splash (i.e. After Shave) and shaving soap for each. This is what a gentleman should smell like.

Bought a new batch bottle at Macy’s and it still smells great. Mostly soapy musk and a little bit of sandalwood. I use it like a cologne and splash it on all over which gives me several hours of medium projection.
