Chaps 2007

So... I'm a big fan of the inexpensive clones you can get on perfume-oils.com, and I was on there one afternoon looking, and Chaps by Ralph Lauren showed up. I was intrigued, because I know that Chaps was discontinued. Like, period. Gone. So I ordered a sample vial of it for the heck of it, thinking it was going to be the obnoxiously spicy nose-bomb fragrance I remembered from my childhood. What showed up wasn't that. It was a much softer, cleaner version of it. I was EXTREMELY confused. I know Covid-19 altered the way I smell certain fragrances, but it couldn't possibly have changed it THAT much. So I came on here, did some digging, and I found this version of the fragrance listed. I'm pretty sure the clone I have in my hands right now is a cloned version of THIS fragrance and not the Chaps Musk fragrance, as I don't get any sort of spice notes to it at all that are listed there. Clean, soapy, kind of powdery and sweet, with a touch of lavender. It's like Stetson's buddy. It doesn't project very far, but it has decent durability. I LOVE IT. Perfect casual "dumb reach" fragrance.

This was the cologne I used every weekend in college whenever I went to the club or parties. A bit cheap and sythentic, but good for the money and got the job done every time. One whiff of this instantly transports me back to those days.

I have a 5ml from a long long time ago. Prob 10+ years . Smells really nice actually. I see alittle bit of similarities to Armani code colonia a bit. At least the 5 ml I have does.

As a lover of the original RL Chaps, I was very disappointed in this newer version. It just doesn't have that same strength and masculinity that the orignal has. To be fair, it doesn't smell terrible. It probably smells great on the right guy. But the original is far better!

Chaps smells rather generic, but not in a pleasant, easy-to-use way, as it's rather loud and in-your-face, which is just not what I go for. Not a fan of the scent, but its performance is quite amazing for a perfume of its price range.

Can't pair the Original chaps released in 1979!

A rather generic, standard and formulaic release exclusive to retailer Kohl's, Chaps offers very little unique or original in its formulation, relying on a rather well-trodden note pyramid but still managing to smell rather pleasant regardless. Chaps is attractive enough for the casual consumer not familiar with the already hundreds of its fore bearers on the shelves. A musky aromatic fougere with sweet mandarin oranges against lavender and herbal synthetics on top, Chaps quickly dries down into a musk and amber scent and a blending of spicy middle and base notes. One could do much worse, certainly. Longevity is around 3-6 hours with a bit of variation based on the chemistry of the wearer and projection is fairly solid for its price. A fragrance completely lacking in personality and originality, but despite its shortcomings is still a rather serviceable cologne for casual wearers and a younger audience generally unfamiliar with range and depth.

This stereotypical AF, brimming with synthetics and of poor concentration, still manages to be pleasant and wearable. The top is heavy on the lavender. The heart does contain some nice spicy notes in good balance. The "musk" in the drydown is very pallid, but the vetiver saves the act. I don't find any "amber" at all, but I do think it might have rounded the scent out a bit and made it a little warmer and approachable. I think on a nice sweaty varsity student this might almost be good, but for the rest of us dry older folks, we would need to use huge doses, and it would require layering over a warmer scent to make it enjoyable.

Has Ralph Lauren gone nuts? Destroying the classics and greedily using the name & trying to cash the success of the 79 version, my Top-most missed scent, my father bought it for me when I began high-school. Oh how wonderfully nostalgic memories, and how mesmerizing a scent! P.S. The bull on the silver cap was very american and very very masculine symbology!
