You think you could handle the life of a German barbarian in the late fourth and early fifth centuries? Poor you, at constant war with Rome while your muddy village made of dirt, sticks and timber is being overrun and infiltrated by successions of Germanic Goths, Saxons, Franks and Vandals fleeing from the feared Huns who swept through Europe from the Russian steppes on the back of sturdy and well bred horses shredding to pieces village after village before enslaving the women and chopping the heads off the men? Could you really swing a battle axe with one hand? Could you really defend your family from onslaught after endless onslaught of pending chaos and death? Answer? Not if you can't pull off wearing this masculine beast of a fragrance. Never mind the country club image here folks, Polo, because this isn't gentlemanly games on the Chelsea commons of West London circa 1910. This fragrance is brutal, earthy, dark and danky pine woods like the ones that used to cover all of Northern Europe before the 12th century. Those woods are wet and mossy from the constant fall rain and drizzle, capturing the misty cool morning and the decaying leaves on the ground. This is leafy and dry tobacco rolled up with a bunch of Asian spices just off the ship from Portuguese and Dutch traders back from Malaysia and Indonesia. The top is like a trip to the apothecary of old, full of medicinal shots of herb and rootsy, earthy concoctions often smoked and ingested but with an aura of mystery still surrounding them in regards to their actual medicinal functionality. This is rough and old-fashioned the first hour before calming into a fantastic blend of dry tobacco and wet woods that was wholly unique at the time and finally gave an American designer credibility in an industry dominated by The French, Spanish. Italians, Germans and Brits (via their introduction to fragrance manufacturing by the Portuguese) until Polo unleashed this dirty frontiersman like woody monster on the buying public. Do you like warm spice, earthy tobacco, muddy roots, green and damp decaying woods in the late evening just a few degrees above freezing? This is one of those fragrances that truly captures a bit of the old world Central Europe well before then global market gave rise to the chopping down of most of the forests and the Hanseatic League discarded many of the local dialects and unique myths and imposed global conformity on the Germanic peoples., This fragrance recalls the smoke of the hearth, the common forest just behind the manor, the smell of sweat and perspiration mixed with honor and pure masculinity after coming back from a day working in the fields pulling the oxen down row after row. This is one of the landmark releases in fragrance over the last 50 years, it took the Paco Rabanne and Halston blueprints and flirtations with mossy, green and spicy tones and blew the roof off this mother like George Clinton. If you are a real woodsman, a man who has no fear sleeping in a tent on Kodiak Island off the coast of Alaska surrounded by grizzly bears on all sides yet perfectly sane and not even disposed for a moment to worry about the possible negatives, this is your fragrance. Polo is one of the few that can truly handle the Paul Bunyan like giants of masculinity on earth without restraining that inner-beast inside. Longevity is still excellent at 8-14 hours depending on the time of the season and your bottle vintage, but lay low on the sprays, keep it to 2-3 at most, with 1-2 honestly best, as this one can be invasive if not kept a little tame on a leash and guarded from a younger generation who aren't used to clouds of tobacco smoke swirling around late night bars. Polo is a classic that may have lost a lot of popularity in the last twenty years with the new wave of fresh and clean fragrances, but is a friendly reminder of how talented Carlos Benaim has always been as an artist of scent.

It’s just a banger. All time classic. Majestic. Unapologetic. Masculine. Powerful. Assertive. Refreshing. The sillage other people get from this one is really magical, even today. It doesn’t smell dated. The old man country club smell is still here in the opening and when you dig your nose in. But to any unwitting bystanders, it is alluring, confident, and manly in the best of ways. It will be asked about and commented on by your colleagues— not to inform you that you smell like an old man (as Polo Green neophytes are wont to fear), but rather, to ask you what you’re wearing because they love it. They want to buy it for themselves, or for their partners. This stuff, especially in the sillage, is extraordinarily vibrant, attractive, and refreshing in a seemingly endless ocean of generic blue fragrances that absolutely no one can differentiate (and all smell like a little brother at best, or a high school-ex at worst, to every woman under 35) There’s nothing I can add that hasn’t already been said... ...other than to say that the sales lady at Nordstrom recoiled in horror when I inquired about buying a bottle of this storied juice... just after we both got done ranting about our mutual love for Royal Oud. She exclaimed: “You’re such a handsome young man. You don’t want to wear Polo. I was married to Polo Green for 18 years!” She went on to inform me how fragrances in the 80’s needed to be harsh in order to cut through and hide the smell of cigarettes in bars/on bar patrons. Next, she continued trying to talk me out of it and had me sample nearly every other scent in the store. I spent about an hour and a half there. Not because I intended to buy anything other than Polo that day, but because I’ll never pass up an opportunity to get my nose on a bunch of fragrances and chat about them with someone who is equally passionate about them. By the end of our sampling tour, spanning around the two separate parts of the store that housed fragrances, she requested to smell the classic Polo I had tested on my left wrist at the beginning of our journey... seemingly in a final effort to talk me out of it... she went on to tell me that it smelled “amazing” on my skin and marveled. This is all to say two things: First, everyone actually loves this beast, as long as you have enough chest hair to get past the opening. But people fear it unjustly before giving it a college try. And second, buyer beware... a mere whiff may awaken dormant PTSD in divorced women over the age of 45. Enjoy and wear with confidence. I’ll always keep a bottle around. All the rumors about this one are true (and legendary). You already know what you’re getting into. Finally, don’t let the speculation about reformulations trouble you. This stuff still performs at an absurdly high level, and it smells virtually identical, accord for accord, with the old stuff. It might have gotten a marginal potency nerf back in the day with the downfall of oak moss, but this is a completely meaningless complaint when you consider that the current formulation still performs far above whatever you think you might possibly need in any given situation. To 99% of people who have worn the old version, it smells very much the same and is immediately identifiable. In terms of projection, sillage, and longevity, nobody who actually wears this stuff will ever complain. It’s still wildly powerful and long lasting. Buy it, spend some time with it, and thank your father and your grandfathers for wearing it. Otherwise, you might not be here reading this review.

Here in the UK this seemed to have all but vanished from the shelves and indeed, even today, I can't find it on the Ralph Lauren website and it's been absent for a while so I had concerns that they had inexplicably opted to discontinue it (I know, that would make literally no sense). Yesterday however I walked into a branch of Boots and sat there was a gleaming brand new tester. I felt slightly odd in that I'd seen this many times in the past but for some reason, just didn't try it. So, it having been so scarcely available for so long, I leapt at the chance yesterday. I had a quick single spray to the wrist and left the shop while I let it sit for a while. Immediately I knew I had smelled this before but perhaps most romantically, it reminded me of that scene in Ratatouille where the food critic eats the dish that has been prepared and is instantly transported back in his bitter old mind to childhood. This scent transported me back straight away and I absolutely fell in love with it. I know this and Kouros are nothing alike but there is for me a similarity not in the scent itself, but in the effect of the scent. It harks back to a different time but my goodness, it does smell so good and took me back to the 80's. One thing I did pick up on immediately was that this was clearly the inspiration for a dupe which I had owned in the past from Marks & Spencer, called Woodspice. It seems so obvious, the M&S fragrance came in a green glass bottle with a gold cap and gold lettering on the bottle! Of course it was a rip off of Polo but I only realised it yesterday. So, if you have a relative, likely a Dad, Grandad or Uncle who has complained about Woodspice not being available any more, get them a bottle of the original it was based on! Polo is smoother and more genteel but the similarity is stark and, bottle aside, blatantly obvious from the scent. Woodspice was a cheaper knock off the OG, Polo. I can't say this reminds me of walking into a Pine forest. I've never set foot in such a place and I sometimes wonder how many people who say that of this fragrance, actually have. Pine absolutely is present and centre but the way this is augmented by the other notes is so carefully done. It makes me think, not of forests, but of warm, exotic summer nights where anything was possible. I'm more than happy to accept this will not smell as good as it once did - the sad truth of so many fallen giants (Kouros, Anteus, Lapidus to name a few) but I think this still has some character to it and is still, as it always has been, unapologetically, uncompromisingly and unashamedly Polo.

CONTEXT: Professional gentleman in his 60's with the mature, masculine, old-school tastes one would expect from a fellow my age. I've been collecting fragrances for a while now and have about 100 fragrances. My bottle of Polo green is vintage. It is THIS fragrance that I am reviewing, not the modern neutered version. These are just one man's not so humble opinions. Your mileage may vary. Oh, man, I love this fragrance! I was 19 when Polo Green came out in 1978. It was my sophomore year at uni and I adopted this gem of a fragrance as my daily wear, as did many of my peers. It was the Dior Sauvage Elixir of its day, but with big... cojones. If you've got some, and the confidence of a traditionally masculine gentleman that comes with them, this fragrance is perfect for you. What alarmingly effeminized, low-T, younger men eschew as "old fashioned" these days, I call mature, hyper-masculine, and sigma-male. Because of this worrisome cultural trend, Polo Green can actually be rather intimidating to beta men. It is frankly rather fun to walk into a roomful of people wearing PG or another ultra-masculine frag like Dior Fahrenheit (Vintage EDT) and watch the betas retreat before you, while at the same time attracting those men with a similar, commanding presence, and women who appreciate those attributes. Polarizing? Perhaps. But in an an effectively discriminating fashion. PG truly separates the men from the soy boyz. Remember: PUT IT ON only if you can PULL IT OFF. Sadly, the modern reformulations of many of these types of fragrances have suffered the dilution, regulation and androgenization common to the modern culture. Tragically, Polo green has acquiesced much to this unfortunate trend as have others like Drakkar Nior. Ohmygoodness, Ralph Lauren and Guy Laroche have totally emasculated these once regal and powerful kings of the fragrance beasts. They have castrated them, removed their claws and pulled their teeth. My ancient bottle of PG is alarmingly low and I will soon have to plumb the exorbitantly-priced depths of questionably "authentic" offerings on eBay to get more. Shite.

Hello fragrance fam, on today's reformulation guide were covering the pine and woods and masterpiece known as Polo EDT for men by Ralph Lauren. For a perfume released in 1978, yes there have been many small reformulations over time that have changed the original scent of Polo. I'm keeping things simple separating it into three main reformulations. The bottle style and shape has remained close to the same, so you mostly have to rely on your batch sticker to find what era your bottle was produced in. The most well regarded are Polos first two main reformulations by Warner and Cosmair. 1. Pre-1987: Any batch sticker that containers the word "Warner/Lauren" or "Warner/Cosmair". These are first edition batches of Polo. I would consider these versions slightly softer and easier to wear. 2. 1991-2006: Any batch sticker that contains the word "Cosmair" without "Warner". These are the most well known and loved versions of Polo. These versions come across as louder and more abrasive in smell with base notes like cedar and pine slightly amplified more than the warner versions. *Due to a transition when Ralph Lauren was changing manufacturers, 2000-2006 Cosmair and Luxury Products have a shared batch code timeline. I would still suggest to pursue the Cosmair versions. 3. Post-2000: Any batch produced by "Luxury Products". Generally the older your bottle, the closer to Polos original scent profile you'll have. You can check these modern batch codes via a batch code website. Be aware of approximate mass reformulations in 2010, 2016 and again in 2024. This one seems really polarizing. The first thing I can say is absolutely under NO circumstances should you blind buy this unless you are CERTAIN you know what you like. This fragrance *smells* like the 1970s and 80s. It radiates old masculinity. It smells like the woods in the PNW. Strong, wet, earthy, and piney. It has a kind of barbershop feel to it without being too similar to others on the market, I think because it lacks the lavender. Has a very slight hint of sweetness to it which is very pleasant. I can't get enough of old school fragrances so this one was a must buy and I am super happy with it. The best scent I can compare this too would be Bois Du Portugal by creed. Take the dry down of that fragrance and add a healthy amount of pine and tobacco. This is a fragrance you have smelled before, and when you smell it again you will know. Yes, it smells like an old man. This fragrance was a product of its time; it has been called the scent of success. Its strong and it makes a statement. Its loud and projects well, lasts all day on skin, and forever on clothing. Will other people like this fragrance? Yes, no, maybe, does it matter? Wear what you enjoy, other people's opinions shouldn't matter when fragrance is about expressing yourself. I enjoy smelling classic, and if that translates to you as old this may not be for you. If you really like classic aromatic fragrances, you may enjoy this. If you want to smell like a coniferous forest after the rain, this might be for you. Sample first if you're on the fence, it may not be your cup of tea.

I've been revisiting some 70s era colognes and Polo stands out as a flat out classic that's still wearable today. Unlike many other popular 70s men's scents (Azzaro Pour Homme or Halston 1-12, for example), this one doesn't let the floral notes dominate. Polo makes a bold statement through sturdy evergreen pine and cedar right off the bat, layered with herbal, mossy, and musky notes. It's super green, more forceful than fresh, super masculine, and superbly blended. You know it the second you smell it. Polo projects a manly confidence in a very traditional way: this isn't a scent a 20 year old guy applies before going to Starbucks for an $8 vanilla chai oat milk latte, it's what that guy's dad puts on when he gets up early to go to his 10 hour work day at the office where he puts in an honest day's work so he can take care of his wife and kids. He also wears it on Saturdays when he cuts the grass, on Sundays when he goes to church, and every other day of the week regardless of what he's doing. He's also perfectly happy wearing it all year long because being a real man isn't seasonal. Perhaps I'm being a bit sentimental, as this was my dad's signature (or more accurately, his only) scent for most of my growing up years. No doubt I love Polo for the way it reminds me of my dearly missed dad, but so do simple button-up light blue oxford shirts, which were the staple of my dad's wardrobe. But where I have no desire to actually wear those shirts dad wore, I can totally enjoy wearing his scent because it is a masterpiece of a cologne.

My first review on fragrantica! This says something about the pleasant surprise I got from this fragrance! Wow! I sure did not expect this! I remember this fragrance from my teen years in early 80s and the distinct green smell that didn't really appeal to me at the time. I thought I would give this another smell some 45 years later! My son bought me a Christmas present, Versace Dylan Blue which I already have, so back to the shop to change it. As I'm building up my collection of classic fragrances, I thought I would try this with a view to adding to my display even if I didn't really like it. Wow what a surprise! This fragrance is much much better than I remember back in the 80s. Much more aromatic and complex. It's the rare kind of fragrance that once you wear it you cannot resist smelling your hand again and again. Similar experience to Guerlain's Habit Rouge. Long lasting too! A mark of quality in my experience. For sure this is for a mature masculine audience or a genuine enthusiast. I do NOT understand the low score here! This is absolutely unfair! You cannot rate classical music if you never listen to it or appreciate it right? So why make a comment when you don't get it? In my humble opinion this rates No:3 out of classic fragrances after Dior Fahrenheit (No:1) and Dior Eau Sauvage (No:2). By the way, THIS is the real Christmas fragrance NOT Burberry London! Overall 4.2 out of 5 from me. Happy sniffings!

I've finally reunited with this gem after a random stop at a discount store. This stuff is 80's horny teenage heaven. A number of the hot guys wore this stuff and it really made me want to explore unmentionable things. (that plus the weed and cheap beers we'd somehow score) The fragrance STILL gives off this vibe that says, I'm really looking to get laid or get into a street fight tonight and I don't care which. It transports me into the moods of John Hughes films or even Coppola's The Outsiders (though inaccurate to the timeline) I recall a friend of mine many years ago who didn't smoke, but he was really attracted to a guy that did. He loved how his lingering cigarette smell would mix with the cologne he was wearing. I didn't get it at the time but smelling the tobacco in Polo again as a former smoker myself, I can identify with the attraction. This fragrance may even be from where his attraction stemmed. That, along with the creamy, expensive couch leathers blend so well with the pine woody notes, subtle florals fresh out of the shower vibe. It gives off feelings of comfort. Like big muscular arms wrapping around you accompanied by the scruffy stubble on his chin. They say it smells like "old money" but I think it also smells a bit like a stack of crisp new hundred dollar bills. If you don't want me humping your leg all night, keep your Polo locked up in a cabinet (and hide the key)

Its a classic masculine scent that just projects hard. One day in my fragrance journey, i smelled a sample. I immediately began to be flooded with memories growing up of my grandfather and father wearing it. He was my mother's father, and my dad and him were close. This scent brings me back to so many memories. I can just smell it instantly. There is so many notes, I simply cant go through it all. But those who know, know. Has it been reformulated? Of course but the theme and core of the scent is very much there. Even by today's watered down version, it last forever. It projects in a room. It really is a decidely masculine scent and one that also evokes older times. You really have to feel confident in wearing this, because younger people simply are not going to like it. I am in my 40s and this scent is pure nostalgia, alongside Brut, British Stirling, English Leather and Stetson. They all carry that similar DNA, and they all hold a love in my heart. RL Polo is a wonderful cold weather fragrance. Its spicy but not in a warm or gourmand way. Its barbershop and cooling. Its loud but not in the way modern fragrances are. It holds a presence. I hope to get a vintage bottle some day but for now, the modern edt is more than enough. Every spray brings a smile to my face of happier days. Certain sense evoke a mood by their smell (ie Issey Miyake), this one brings me back in time.

im at the point where im conserving my vintage polo pretty tight. Its always been my favorite. I think the first half hour when you spray it on is the most perfect fragrance ive ever smelled. Sit back and clear your mind of the "old man smell" bs. Imagine youre walking with your best friends in a pine forest hiking trail in the late winter or early spring when its chilly out, but you can smell the trees around you, some fir trees, juniper bushes ect. One of your friends is smoking a hand rolled natural leaf cigarette, and its nice tobacco too. Your other friend might be smoking the "other" good stuff but he fell back a little bit from you two when he lit up so who knows for sure with the pine trees around. You left camp at dawn when it was colder out, but after the sun has started rising you start smelling more vegetation. The moss around the base of the pine trees, the vegetal smells of green plants (though never in a thick humid sense because its not hot out). On top of it all, theres a crisp dryness in the air of pinecones and maybe off in the distance, a campfire. You might say it out loud, or you may keep it to yourself...but youre really enjoying being a dude doing something masculine in the outdoors. P.s. weirdly the leather never really jumped out at me though most notice it. I think its just blended in a way that makes me only think of forest

I just keep coming back to this thing. It charmed me since i tried it back in '21 and i felt like i had already known it (Near death/afterlife experience? I dunno man) and it charms me equally right now, gives me nostalgia of a time period i didn't know and one i did experience, both at the same time. I gotta say my 2020 formula does feel heavily aromachemical - aided. Sharp aldehydes, sharp pepper note, slight ambroxan. Got a hold on a vintage formula, pine is extremely natural smelling, sappy, with a very light floral bouquet, a ton of the chamomile which gives it kind of a fresh chuch - flowers vibe. I relate it to a celebration, like XV años, a wedding or even a funeral, but it does indeed remind me of the afterlife. And it's weird, since it has a few things that remind of death and of earthly suffering: Dead animals' tanned hides from leather, tobacco smoke, burnt woods as a fire in the forest. But at the same time it has this bright, lively quality to it: Pine, damp earth and herbs, florals, spices. I once described this as being objectively the GOAT. Le Male Le Parfum is no GOAT, this is way closer to that. This just smells like a man in control, with no pronouns and no worries about women reaching him or not. And yet, he gets all the ladies. Maybe i'm biased, but this is great.

How do I glaze this without rambling forever? Love. I love this. Very few smells make me close my eyes in joy. This is one of them. Pine, sweet, man. Never sour, but never overly sweet, tobacco, leathery. It smells like what you think a woman looking at your pectoral muscles feels like. It says "come closer" but not a "come kiss me" more of a "come give me a hug as I build our family home". The scent of an accomplished and confident man. Sillage? Dont worry about it. It's so huge that theres no point thinking about it. Lasts forever. A beautiful scent. Nothing is like it. Nothing. Even Halston Z14 is quieter and more cinnamon compared to this. Oh how beautiful. I have always used some kind of Polo. When I was a teen i used one of the big pony fragrances. When I was early twenties I graduated to Polo Red. And finally, in my early thirties, I have met Polo Green. Polo Black is also similarly grown up but this...this is class. Suit? Polo Green. Polo Shirt with sweater on shoulders? Polo Green, Date with a woman? Polo Green. Your Wedding? Polo Green? Buy multiple of them so you have endless supply? Polo Green. Timeless, perfect, and the kind that makes you say: "i dont need Tom Ford. I just need me and this fragrance is me." If they discontinue this, I will be so royally pissed.

Vintage vs current: There's little I can add that hasn't been said, but I will briefly share my own experience as it may prove helpful to some. I have a sample from my father in law's pristine Cosmair splash bottle. It is everything people say it is: masculine, complex, rich - a real treat. About a year ago, I tried the current Polo (in the new, squarish bottle) at Macy's and sadly concluded that those saying that Polo was dead were correct. I found it lacking certain aspects almost completely (e.g., menthol, tobacco) and dominated by a cheap aromachemical approximation of an 80s masculine (which mostly smells to me of damp hay). Wanting to give it a fair shake before despairing completely, however, I eventually ordered a sample of Polo from the Decant Boutique. I was pleased to find it much closer to the Cosmair bottle of my FIL, albeit somewhat less potent and complex. Hearing from Kelan at the Scents of South Jersey Youtube channel that he finds the quality to decline sharply around the atomizer change (tall to short), I ordered an older (2016) Luxury Products tester from Ebay and was delighted to find it the same as my sample from the Decant Boutique. As long as those bottles are affordable there's no need to give up on Polo yet!

This fragrance is a true masterpiece. As a child, I vividly recall the aroma of this perfume. A home-stay student residing with my parents wore it. While my mother detested it, I found it to be quite appealing. I refrained from wearing it as a young adult, as I perceived it to possess an antiquated and outdated scent. However, with age, I have decided to experiment with it, and I must say, this fragrance is an exceptional and enduring aroma. I do not believe it is worn to impress the ladies; you wear it to meet with the guys for a pint of whiskey or a day on the golf course. It embodies the opulence of the 80's at its finest. I have read about reformulations of this fragrance, and I find no objections to the statement. I acknowledge that the evolving nature of modern scents has necessitated adjustments, and I believe the original fragrance might have been excessively potent. Nevertheless, I discovered that even with a mere two sprays, its projection persisted for approximately three hours, and its scent remained noticeable on my skin eight hours later. I wish more of the other Polo EDTs could achieve such longevity. This fragrance is something I believe every man in their forties should consider adding to their collection.

So initially, I did not like this fragrance during the first few sprays but after letting it dry down, the sharp pine is no longer there and it's a bit more pleasant. I've been wanting to try Polo or 'Polo Green" for many months now, wanting to understand why younger people hated it and older people loved it. Now I understand BOTH sides to this fragrance. It smells dirty, like a damp wet forest mixed in with an ashtray, which obviously to most of you guys it would sound unappealing - but it's not in a bad way for me. It's a rugged, dirty, masculine manly man's cologne that came out in 1978 and it smells like 1978. When wearing this fragrance I am both revolted and pleased by the scent, it starts very sharp and becomes more green as time goes on, but still dirty. If Abraham Lincoln had a signature scent, this would be it. Would I recommend blind buying? No. It's very, very polarizing and unless you're an older gentleman that has bought this before and loved it - you're gonna want to try it before you buy it. The scent itself is definitely for people over 40+, but I'm sixteen and I wear this scent proudly even if nobody will like it. Don't buy this to please people, buy it for yourself and make confidence your biatch!💪

This was the first vintage fragrance I bought. Grabbed a 7 ml mini. The batch was from the mid 80's. Was shocked with how strong, confident & unabashed it smelled. I almost disliked it, but at the same time I was grabbed by extreme fascination! This was nothing I've ever smelled before. Modern perfumes for men tend to be quite feminine in comparison. With lots of vanilla, tonka bean, white florals, cardamom etc. Just look at the strongest percieved notes in Polo Green: Pine, Tobacco, Leather, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Cedar, Juniper, Vetiver. This smells like a man with healthy testosterone levels. A willful & strong man who doesn't bow down to the modern Idiocracy, where being a man is synonymous with being toxic. This man has integrity & doesn't shy away from confrontation when he needs to defend his ideals. For him truth is more important than social cohesion & freedom is more important than comfort. Vintage Polo opens up potent & sharp. Bergamot, basil & conifers. There's almost a pissy aspect in the beginning, alas I don't see any civet in the note composition. Then it slowly dries down into moss, leather & tobacco. Very heavy & powerful stuff!

Like most guys that grew up in the 80s/90s, I've always had a bottle of this in stock. I wore it then because it was practically required by law. I like it now because it's unapologetically old-fashioned. It's a dry, green, powerhouse chypre, and it's not trying to be anything else. Men's fragrances today are overrun by too many generic, watery blue aquatics that are completely indistinguishable from one another. Polo, with its bitter pine and tobacco, is the antidote to that lazy trend that's been beaten to death. It's a much-needed shock to the system, and frankly a good palate cleanser. As mentioned below, it's immediately recognizable. People may not necessarily love it, but it carries an air of being grounded, confident, and successful. It's not that it's hard to pull off, it's that it's uncommon for younger guys to wear it. Those two things aren't the same. I wish these kinds of fragrances would make a comeback. And here's to everyone who laughs every time a boomer unironically says something like 'effeminized' (LOL seriously, dude?) Wear whatever makes you happy.

Many are quick to overlook the current version of Polo due to its vintage pedigree. While the oakmoss has been stripped away, and the formulation has undergone minor adjustments. One aspect still remains unchanged: Polo is still Polo. The essence of pine sap, tobacco, basil, and spicy leather still prevails. It's easy to forget that Polo has endured the test of time, and it is a privilege to see this remarkable fragrance still produced and marketed in today's tonka bean market. I own the original Cosmair, the reformulated tall sprayer, and the current formulation, and I personally favor the tall sprayer for its smoother, tobacco-rich, and more modern interpretation, which I also find to be smokier. The current formulation is great too, in its own right. Polo clearly serves as the blueprint for Tom Ford's Italian Cypress, which is another beloved of mine, crafted by the same master perfumer Carlos Benaim. All in all, Polo is still one of those fragrances that manages to remain its sophisticated, masculine, and distinguished appeal.

This is quite possibly the most manliest cologne ever made imo. At least from what ive smelled. This right here totallly dwarfs things like CDNIM. This thing right here doesnt play around. Its not fruity. Its 100% pine, tobacco and woods. You are in the middle of a forest, in a lumber mill wood processing plant sitting next to a 6 foot 4 lumberjack man smoking some premium tobacco. Thats whats this cologne is. Its amazing. I wore this stuff when i was just a dorky little 14 year old kid lol, and im so glad i got myself a new bottle now. Im sure the forumla has changed over the years, but its been 20+ years for me since ive worn this but the new one i got smells pretty much like the OG as far as i can remember. I cant possibly fathom how somebody can describe this as juvenile loll. When i was a teenager wearing this I had sooo many older women tell me i smelled great, and i was a really ugly pale scrawny goofy awkward kid just working as a bag boy in the grocery store, so i know it was the cologne they liked and not me.

It's April 2010 and I left a review from my old account on Fragrantica: "Nice and earthy. For an older gent and great for a formal night out. Not an everyday use and use lightly. Worth picking up but not a staple." This scent is seared into my memory. I liked it as a kid, teen, young adult, and middle aged grumpy hermit. The crisp pine and tobacco. Smooth leather and oakmoss hitting just right. That fresh and powerful scent that will make a sensitive nose wince on the opening. It all comes together to make something very special, mature, classy, and memorable. It's been around for a long time and has remained a good choice for each new generation who comes along. One of the few scents that can be called dated and yet is still appreciated. I can see myself buying yet another bottle in the future. Often imitated but never truly duplicated, you it owe it to yourself to experience at least one bottle in your lifetime.

The temperature dipped below 60F today so I had to bust out Polo. Polo is so good. Incredibly unique despite being nearly 50 years old. Even the modern formulation is good, maybe a little lacking when it comes to sillage and longevity. In the opening I get lime and basil. The lime never turns sour and lends its brightness during the brief opening. Polo quickly settles down into a well-oiled leather, pine tree, and oakmoss. Dark tobacco in the base creeps in slowly. Incredibly masculine fragrance, to the point where people will immediately dismiss Polo as an "old man" smell. When compared to modern releases, Polo is practically Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking a 4x4. Maybe I'm biased because my father wore Polo. He still wears it, 40 years later. There's a reason Polo is still around.

I love this stuff. I own a vintage 237ml Cosmair formulation Polo Green. Its such a perfect blend of notes. It's creamy and earthy. The trend nowadays seems to be sweet, unisex fragrances (which I don't mind), but if you're only into those then I'd advise you to steer clear of Polo Green. This is not unisex. This is a fragrance FOR MEN. It definitely goes down in men's fragrance history books along the likes of CK Obsession and Drakkar Noir. They left their mark on the fragrance world. I have never smelled a current formulation of Polo Green, but if you can grab a vintage formulation then it's worth having this in a collection.

I’ve smelt just about everything new and what was popular for the past two decades and when I first smelled this out in public I had to ask the man what it was, and we don’t do that often here let’s be honest. It’s new and classic at the same time, the juniper berries and lemon pull in references of modern masterpieces while the almost oil like depth of pine and herbs fit perfectly with a barbershop that hasn’t been remodeled since 1925. I bought a bottle within the week. The only thing I dislike is a powdery tobacco note that fortunately only shines when sprayed on clothing. 9.5/10 Go easy on the sprays. Absolute classic.

Just caught the Polo Green train for the past few months. Apparently the fragrance went through multiple reformulation since its release almost 50 years ago and is just a shadow of his former self. Haven't had the chance to smell but the current formulation, but I was impressed nonetheless. This frag reeks of confidence and personality, it's uber masculine and not apologizing for it. I understand why it's divisive for some. It's not the kind of scent you would wear to smell "nice" but rather to make a stand and beg to differ from the sweetness overdose that's flooded the market for the past 10+ years.

Polo Green is unapologetically old-school. A bold mix of pine, tobacco, and leather that feels a bit more like a relic than just a vintage. It’s deep, rich and full of nostalgia, but there’s no denying it smells like it belongs to another era. That’s not a bad thing, classics are classics for a reason, but if you’re after something fresher and more modern, this might feel a little 'too' timeless. Still, when the mood calls for tradition, Polo Green delivers. Try layering with some modern freshness over the top, a bit of citrus. Or even give it the bifters with some oud or leather?

This has to be my favourite winter fragrance of all time. Pure masculinity in a bottle. Nothing beats it. If you're young it's hard to pull off just because of how mature it is. I'm 16 and I got mixed comments about this from classmates, have had girls and friends say I smell like a rich grandpa. Nonetheless I still wear this because I personally love the scent, but I know it will definitely suit me better once I'm older. Not blind buy safe unless you know you like tobacco/woody notes. If you are 30+ this is a must have in your collection. Unapologetically manly and sexy.

The Chamomile is so prominent to me on the current version, it's crazy. My nose is picking up on stuff I never picked up when wearing this scent back in the day. Maybe it`s because of the reformulation but the Chamomile and the Tobacco are very accentuated for my nose. I need to retry this, considering repurchasing it because of nostalgia but not so sure about the formula - 125ml bottle or 118ml? The store where I tested this today had the 125 ml for sale, but I'm not sure I sampled it or an older tester they had hanging around. Need to keep testing to be sure

This is the most unique fragrance I've ever known. I've been wearing this over decades. The combination of scents is devine to me. I may have change in quality or strength over the years but it is still number one to me. I've never heard a women say she didn't like Polo Green, in fact I have heard women say they love this. It mysterious and a just magnificant, good quality. I aways buy a large bottle because it is good to wear in any season of the year. I can't say enough about this scent, for me it's the best.

Polo. My father's scent. Is it the fanciest, rarest, most expensive luxury fragrance? No. But it's an original classic that deserves it's place in fragrance history and everyone should wear/smell it at least once. Instantly recognizable. Sharp, stout--somehow not too offensive. Certainly an older scent profile, but it let's the fragrance world know in the world of constantly evolving tastes and experimental bottles, the old-guard is here to stay, a reminder that the classics still perform up to snuff.

While I like it just as much as @Stahlescents, it doesn't smell like the PNW to me in that it lacks that refreshing moisture, almost minty-ness that soaks into everything up there. If anything what surprised me was how DARK this leans when people typically just describe this as "green," etc. Though I do love classics and smelling 30 years older than I am, I didn't expect to love this as much as I do. That's with a modern formulation. Longevity leaves a lot to be desired, sadly.

This one is the pinnacle of masculinity. It was love at first whiff for me, with a timeless and smoky sillage that triumphs over the powdery scents of today’s market, this one I’ve found is sure to allure others just enough for them to decide whether or not they can sustain your presence. I concur with the comments that this is a scent for the rugged and proud; Those who are brazenly confident in the simple fact of being nothing more than a Man, but certainly nothing less.

Lovely elixir within this green bottle (cosmair era bottle) As somebody from Japan, the first image polo evokes is the inside of a taxi. An old school toyota crown comfort with fuzzy seats and lace decor. The slight herbaceous scent of the car cleaner combined with the cigarette smoke embedded on the driver’s crisp white shirt. It captures an era, a place, a memory. Its wonderfully old school and unapologetically bold. It will always be a beloved bottle in my collection.

I had to pay tribute to one of my "big three" fragrances (Polo, Obsession, and Drakkar) from high school/college. Loved this stuff. Haven't smelled this in years, and I'm sure it's been reformulated. I have nothing like it in my collection (I have Red Rush, but it doesn't remind me of the original), but Polo is one of the things from the 80s/90s that will forever live in my memories. Would I buy it again? Probably not, unless it was for nostalgia's sake.

I have more bottles of this than any other fragrance, essentially a lifetime supply. My favorite is actually a splash aftershave from the mid-80s - that seems to have been kind of a sweet spot for production. Baroque in a good way, symphonic. Reassuring. Works for lounge lizards, works for Puritans. Old saddles, old libraries, old forests, everything old but well cared for, bracing, embracing. An optimistic smell.

One of the greatest classic scent!! It's for Man!!! Wonderful complex , high quality and on of the first green KING!! Don't listen what folks says about Polo and wearing Afnan and Club de Nuit!!! This is the Quality !! Like Givenchy G, Dior Fahrenheit or Chanel Egoist. It’s style it’s Man and feelings!! Timeless fresh green bit& sweet masculine vibes and Not Grandpa feeling!!! But again not for kids!!!

What can I say about this. Just so nostalgic. My step dad wore this. He passed away a couple years back. Reminds me of him, has a comforting feeling to me, and also just smells like money. lol. I wear this in the fall, winter, and early spring. This is a 10/10 fragrance for me. I have a son and I hope that this fragrance keeps getting carried on and he can have the same thoughts wearing as I do.

Don't listen to the reviewers harping on and on about how superior previous versions are (a good rule of thumb, in general, on Fragrantica). The current version is absolutely beautiful and performs incredibly well. If you want to spend your life trying to chase shadows of a past that is never coming back, that's fine. But don't put people off of what's here now. It's a wonderful fragrance.

Smells very mature, much more of an older man's scent though, smells like something a businessman would wear, the notes of pine and tobacco really signify their presence in the opening, pretty good for an EDT, you should buy if your not that really into fresh aquatic scents and more into mature, manly and dark scents, I would not say this fragrance is bad at all, 9/10.

One of the fragrances every mature man should have in his collection. Extremely versatile in cooler weather. You can wear it in the day, you can wear it at night. Oozes sophistication, so don’t rock it with sweatpants. But if you’re going to work, or going out to a nice dinner, this is the one to go with. It definitely catches attention, and you smell like money.

Smells like a veteran, wearing a faded flannel shirt. He's divorced, and now living out the rest of his days deep in the forest. Every morning he chops trees, builds and fixes things from radios to fences with his variety of tools for the rest of the day. His ashtray is always full. His advices on life are unforgettable, always backed by a hell of a story

The scent for the sophisticated man, smells fougère, like a man who goes to the country club, drinks whisky and smokes cigars. It is for those who have a sense of style and a distinct personality, not suitable for a more casual audience or loud events or clubs. Ultimately, it is mature, for those who unapologetically know what they like and stick with it.

beautiful forest and grassy meadow vibe with a strong old-school masculine feel. Very intense and in-your-face, with great projection and longevity. A must-have if you love green fragrances. Even though I love it, I know it’s not for everyone. It’s very intense, very herbal/piney and vintage, so it’s definitely something you should test first. 8/10

This being rated a 3.83 is borderline blasphemy. Iconic men’s fragrance. If you don’t love this, give it to a friend with some hair on his chest. This is Probably the best performing of all Ralph Lauren frags that I have come across- newer bottles will have worse longevity/sillage, but my 2000s bottle is very nice! (Borat voice)

Even though it's significantly different from what I used to wear in the mid-80s, it always takes me back to the best years of my life. For me, it's more than a perfume—it's my youth. Is it worth it? Well, I guess that's a matter of taste. At my age, I always keep a bottle somewhere nearby just for a quick sniff.

I love this very much. I wore it to the park with some friends on a windy day and I could still smell it when I got home a few hours later. It’s definitely I will be buying very often. It smells very clean and mossy/piney which I’ve never owned before but will experiment with more in the future

This is a timeless classic. I was a kid, about 10 years of age when I noticed my father using this perfume. Always felt it has a strong manly scent. This is truly a classic and will never fade in time. Perfume lasts long and only gets better as hours pass by. The bottle is beautiful.

3.83 rating a joke . I’m pretty young and have used this regularly for about 2 years . Love it , smells great to me and others seem to like it as well. Longevity is pretty good and so is projection. Could wear it pretty much any season , more of a day time one though imo

Although it has been in the market since 50 years but I have never tested it, I just tried it one month ago at one shop and I was shocked by the amazing scent, how come I missed this scent all these years. It is very masculine and suitable for mature men, not for boys.
