Ocean Oud

Most marine compositions are content to linger like cold mist on a windshield: all condensation, perhaps a synthetic spike, and no soul. But Monegal with Ocean Oud, demands a bit more conversation. The opening provides the condensation: a saline, briny vapor evocative of a damp coastal fog. But before you can dismiss it as another calone overload, the dark side quickly arrives. This is the action phase: rugged, feels less like a sunny day at the beach and more like the atmospheric weight of a shallow shore at dusk. The real intrigue of this scent lies in its grit. As it dries down, a leather hide-like musky gravity surfaces. In parallel, a slight animalic oud intertwines with a gasoline-etched floral accord. All this counterbalances the saltines, creating an intriguing struggle between watery transparency and a dense base. Performance wise, longevity sits around 10+ hours on skin. The projection maintains a disciplined scent bubble. Surprisingly, in my experience this dark aquatic composition thrives in the heat. Higher temperatures allow the salty, woody complexity to radiate rather than become cloying. If you’ve grown tired of predictable aquatic fragrances, Ocean Oud could be the remedy. Not for european summers people won't understand what are you wearing. Salty, oceanic with extreme gasoline type of oud. Middle eastern fragrance, def not a blind buy. Close to masterpiece..

Great! Unique combo of calone + ambergris + oud (assam is dominant) + labdanum. Gasoline and stale seawater.

At first it's a great aquatic masculine smell that I love but then it turns into something very strong and too familiar (maybe the synthetic ambergris that makes you want to shed your skin after spraying too much). That stronger less interesting version is like a floral version of modern moth repellents you hang in your cabinet. I don't know, it's pleasant but with thousands of better scents out there, not sure it's worth my money. Too bad, because the opening is salty and not too many fragrances can do that without any hints of sweat or sourness. Btw if you have this and you're curious, try smelling it on your skin while you're cutting onions! They make something together, onion and Ocean Oud, I can't describe what's so good about it. They just go so well with each other, but it only works if you love the smell of onion, like I do (I guess?). edit: I'd just like to add if the reader is looking for a more realistic and less crowd-pleasing marine scent, give Gulf Breeze by Solstice a go. If you want to go full 'Yikes, that's strong and kind of nasty' then for sure Silence The Sea by Strangelove

A good oud but the aquatic scent feels a bit synthetic.

Almost a year ago if not a year and a day, I came across this in the Harrods fragrance hall and although it did not float my boat it definitely struck me as unique and distinctive enough that a scent strip made its way first into a ziplock baggie and then into my bag and survived the initial cull of emptying my bag of the many such scent strips to later take up residence in my bathroom bookshelf sandwiched between vintage national geographic magazines where it was almost forgotten, occasionally this particular collection of samples would be exhumed and sniffed to remind me of my London trip but mostly Ocean Oud was ignored in favour of the bizarre olfactory assault of Silence The Sea - a similarly marine fragrance that unlike the aquatics of the 90s that smell of the idea of the sea actually smells like drowning and the kraken. Ocean Oud rather was its less charismatic cousin and remained a wallflower for almost a year. Silence The Sea continued to be the focus of my sniffing these samples, until last week when it finally fell apart and the mystery was revealed as its consistuent angelica, truffle, and ambergris components each sat sulking in opposite corners of the room instead of frolicking in the waves together like a gaggle of bewitching sea sirens. Ocean Oud on the other hand managed to stay put-together and consistent, and finally in the decay of its competition was able to shine. And shine it did!! I am kicking myself for having overlooked this for so long. Even after a year since it was sprayed, it had very distinct cohesive composition. And suddenly I couldn't bear to live without it for it is everything I had no idea I was in terrible need of. In many scents or fragrant ingredients there is a mutuality - a facet shared by two components that allow them to find common ground and marry. Different roses for example can have green stem-like aspects, musky aspects, powdery aspects, etc, and can be married to any number of other components through their mutuality. But there is no venn diagram connecting oud and the genuine scent of the ocean - they are not natural bedfellows. Which makes this such a strange and enigmatic scent, full of contradiction and juxtaposition!! Never have I ever smelled anything like it. It has the true to life oceanic accord of StS but is exalted by the beautiful Laotian oud and smells much, much more user friendly. It also has a beautiful ozonic quality that makes it smell very clean and diffusive. Hot stones, baking sand, sea foam, sea spray, sunlight reflected upon ocean waves. An illusion of a photorealistic seascape but under the waves instead of water you find a sea of oud. This fragrance turns a simple walk on the beach into a comprehensive, holistic, full body experience of communing with the deep. Sometimes, very rarely, when I am on the beach, I can actually smell the ocean. It is such an incomprehensively expansive smell that I feel my brain has switched it off so as I can appreciate the other things in my vicinity, the sheer size of what that smell represents and the magnitude and power of it are overwhelming, so perhaps as a security mechanism not to blow a circuit my brain ignores the smell of the sea. But sometimes, rarely, I catch a whiff of it and it blows my mind. The enormity and sheer size of the ocean and its history and eternity humble me and the scent of it is elusive and fleeting, for as soon as I recognize it my brain switches it off. With this fragrance however, that enormous calm, enormous ferocity, the romanticism, the brutality, the indifference, the seaweed, the sealife, the mystery, the everything, becomes not a fleeting fancy but part of me and the mineral waves that wash over me throughout the day propel me out to sea like I'm caught in a rip tide or riding a wave. All the power and the tranquility of the ocean are harnessed when I wear this fragrance and I am completely taken by it, this is the song of the sea. I absolutely love this and whilst it clearly (from the oud) smells of my signature, it does not compare to anything else in my collection and I am so happy to have this in my life. The presentation packaging, by the way, is also exquisite. If you like oud and you particularly like the ocean then this scent is definitely for you. Absolutely full-bottle worthy.

Absolutely bizaare, very strange and disturbing fragrance. LOTS of ambergris, this smells literally like the ocean concentrated into a bottle of essence. Im not sure who is supposed to find this appealing or how, but as a piece of art it is fascinating and even though it is not pleasant it is very compelling and you can continue smelling it blotter to nose for hours and not quite understand it yet. Mysterious. VERY ODD. Similar to Silence the Seas by Strangelove.

One of the most beautiful marine perfumes with luxurious ingredients moving in an ocean of woods, oud, oud, amber, and musk. A captivating floral, woody, earthy, marine scent. 🌊 🏝️
