Falling Trees

One of, if not the, most beautiful and embodying fragrances I've ever held in my hands. Captures my happiest memories of escaping to Albion and camping in late summer every year. It's sappy, not sticky, woody but not overpromising. All I can think about when I smell this is being a little girl, staring at the bonfire after a day of surf and swim in the freezing Pacific, with everyone I love sitting beside me, doing the same. I can't see the sky through the canopy of giant redwoods surrounding us but I know the stars are there, dancing like the flames. In the morning the dew will have taken over, descended from the fog and blanketed the bunsen burner and the fly of our tent. But my mother will put on her fur hat and make coffee as the day dawned. My sister and I will find banana slugs, never touching them with our salty fingers. Our dog will bolt out of the tent and run through the woods all day, only returning when he is called for dinner. Maybe we'll go into town and pick out a book, or maybe we'll look for tide pools and peer into worlds tinier than we ever thought possible. All that matters is that we move through the day as a family. And twenty years later, I will smell Falling Trees and be held by these memories as long as an inhale lasts, wishing it were forever.

I find it funny how many fragrances I review that start off with being called into the forest by something, and this is no different! I guess this is just the scent profile I adore the most deeply. Okay, so let's begin again. Falling Trees is being summoned by an ancient forest essence. It's not just a big tree, but all of them... which make up the biggest tree, life. The wood here is something foundational and feels like it molded the land we now walk, camp, and dance upon. It's cosmic royalty, but it also feels like your best friend. It begins a little sharp, with its dainty needles and transforms into something soft, like a billowy, silky incense cloud; a great, long hug. I find it clean in a natural way and could be worn in many different occasions. For example, the office or forest bathing or...befriending gods that are more ancient than your bloodline... Absolutely unisex and I recommend it for all!

Wow! Just one spray and I already love it. It's the first day of October, the air is kind of cool, the sky is pale, this is definitely autumn. And this is the perfect scent for today. It has a woody, piney assemblage of notes with benzoin, incense and myrrh. These are three of my favorite notes. When I think of benzoin I also think of Diptyque's Benjoin Bohème, another "Oriental" Woody. This is definitely a neutral gender perfume. I think it would enhance the masculinity of a man, but it would also increase the sensuality of a woman. It has the power of the forest, of trees, of wilderness, and it goes on so smoothly, like a soft cashmere sweater. A winner to me.

My original review is second to the bottom of this page. That was five years ago, and I was three months into "falling through the rabbit hole" of perfume obsession, so I don't know whether the formula has been changed or has my nose changed after smelling literally thousands of perfumes in five years and narrowing down what I like/love? BUT (you knew there was a but, huh) this is super SUPER strong in either Ambroxan or ISO-E Super. So much so that it takes over the entire scent. It does calm down after awhile, but that is still what I mostly get. I'm kind of relieved as I can take it off my want list now.

Régime des Fleurs truly creates bubbles of softness from iconic yet often sturdy materials. Here's a great example. It's a very nice incense, resinous and "bold", yet woody/coupant/astringent, both understated and very present. I also read a little aspect of freshly cut wood, which is really very pleasant. If like me you like perfumes built around incense, especially for you and to wear close to your skin, this is a very nice discovery, and one of my favorites from their collection (where there is plenty to eat in terms of creativity, even if the base line is consistent).

When I order a sample of a fragrance based on the description, I am hopeful and open to the possibility of falling in love. Falling Trees has delighted me by fulfilling the promised glory that fuels my hopes. This fragrance is a steady presence of evergreen woods paired with warm resins. The fragrance is refined and elegant with no bombast. As a resolutely unisex scent, I predict that when I obtain a full bottle of this glorious fragrance, le Boyfriend will reach for this bottle as often as I will. I am in love again!

Totally get/agree with the comparison to Aesop Hwyl -- same genre. HOWEVER -- this totally captures the smell of fresh air in a way that Hwyl doesn't. You can smell the coolness and crispness of forest air in a way so realistic and stunning. I know there aren't notes of cedar but it reminds me of one of those beautiful arid cedar storage rooms you'd have a lake house or somewhere north -- almost sauna ish in a smell a little. I say that, and yet as I said there's still something very crisp and breezy here.

yes this is simple. yes it is also perfect and worth the stupid price tag. doesn’t give forest to me, more like walking through a big park in the city on a crisp fall day when there’s leaves all over the ground but they haven’t quite started to decompose underfoot yet. dry leaves on concrete, the last day in october when it’s just barely warm enough to go without a jacket. i sprayed this all over my cashmere sweater a week ago and i can still smell it, fell in love and must have a whole bottle

I really love Liis Bo, and I absolutely cannot see how these are even remotely related, though I love them both. Bo is pretty thick and resinous and this is dry and airy. I would put this much more into a your skin but better category (Liis definitely is not that!) but with a more distinct wood tilt than, say, Molecule 01. A little bit Christmas-y, reminds me also of Le Long Fong by Maison Louis Marie but lighter. Of all the your skin but better scents this is one of my favorites.

Ranchorita's review made me want to buy this sample. It came today and out of 30 or so samples, THIS is the one I want to wear today. I think I fell hard for Falling Trees. So warm, so woodsy, so beautiful! I have gotten samples that said unisex and they were too masculine but this is not masculine or feminine. It's straight up the middle warm, luscious forest scent. WHY does it have to be $200 a bottle?! Maybe I can bottle up my tears and exchange them for this one day soon.

i utterly love this fragrance. it reminds me of damp playground bark chips on a fall morning, but earthier. its as if it rained the night before and the grass next to the playground is still wet and you can smell the damp earth and the wood chips. another way of putting it is laying on a damp forest floor and burying yourself in the wet fallen leaves. this is such a peaceful fragrance and i wish it wasnt so expensive, because its gorgeous. very earthy and damp and mulchy

I find myself inexplicably drawn to this fragrance. I've tried a couple of other scents from this house and didn't click with their personalities, but this one enchants me in a way I can't quite describe. It dances around the air and lures me like a will-o'-the-wisp, deep into a forest, and to a grove of massive weeping willows. Falling leaves. The breeze feels like the living breath of nature. This forest is painted in watercolors and might be inhabited by unicorns.

Having tested all of the offerings from Regime Des Fleurs, this one is by far my favorite. It truly does smell like a forest trail. I am an avid hiker, and for me it is the most moving scent of all. I feel I could wear this hiking and I would blend right in with the forests of the Pacific Northwest. It doesn't just smell like one tree, it smells like a whole forest, and the understory, and the dry leaves crunching under your feet.

Thick, smoky, waxy woods with piercing incense. It's not overwhelming and has a very comforting masculine quality to it. Reminds me of midnight mass on Christmas Eve and sitting next to my chain-smoking uncle the whole time. The cypriol and oakmoss mingle with the incense to tone down its churchyness. It's rugged yet clean and soft. It has decent longevity and has a handsome sillage.

Can’t stop sniffing my arms oh my goodness. Imagine being a kid again, playing at a playground somewhere in the pacific west coast. The playground has those wood chips, you’ve fallen off the swings into them and it’s a warm sunny day. I’ve always liked the smell of those things so no wonder I love this fragrance so much. Myrrh definitely stands out just give it a second.. haha

Oh I love this so much. It smells like a beautiful Christmas tree on a cold winter day from the pine needles, to the bark, and some of the sap stuck to the trunk. Then with the incense it’s like you even have the wood fire going in the background. It’s so lovely and still not too heavy. I am obsessed. A winter staple for me for sure.

A big tree is giving you a comforting hug, the sun is shining on your face through the branches bringing warmth to the cool understory of the forest, and there is a hint of sweetness underneath the decay of the forest floor. Beautiful fall/winter/early spring (maybe even year round) woody fragrance. I am enamored with this one!

Opens like a damp fresh cut wood with just enough juniper to spice it up. There's also a deep chocolately base with what smells like... A little cinnamon? Honestly it's lovely so far. Masculine but I'm obsessed with deep woody scents so it will be a cozy winter fragrance in this lady household.

Not really a foresty scent, but a pleasant incense smoke peppery fragrance that doesn’t feel chokey and doesn’t go into like a overly sweet boozy angle. It is lovely. Woody, but feels quite feminine still. However, it is quite short lived

The perfect resinous slightly burnt incense-y tree scent. It’s less sweet than Liis Bo and feels slightly more airy. I love Bo as well and am glad to have both in my collection.

it's a bright autumn morning and there's incense smoke curling around the wood stacked by the fireplace in the cabin and i feel so warm and calm

A very dry, refreshing woody-aromatic scent. I get mostly juniper with just a general woody note underneath it. Fairly linear, but there is some development as the hours go by, with the juniper note losing some of its initial sharpness and becoming a bit more soft-focus. I'm pretty sure there's Iso E Super in this, giving it an airy, abstracted quality. I often have trouble with Iso E, but it's handled pretty well here (as opposed to the overdose found in many contemporary scents such as Terre D'Hermes). All in all, a decent woody fragrance with a fairly naturalistic feel, but overpriced.

I appreciate how clear and tart the wood accords are, and the incense blends well without coming across as smoky or cloying. Very realistic! Comforting, bright, very zen. I like the opening freshness just slightly more than the warmer slightly stickier drydown of this one. I've had my nose out for the perfect resinous pine forest cabin scent to recall Northern Minnesota, and this is the best I've smelled yet (it's at least beat out Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser & Cape Heartache, and House of Bo Espiritu)

The price/performance ratio here is criminal. Great scent. For the two whole hours it lasted. Being out in the woods with a snuffed out campfire way in the distance. I really like it. But I certainly would not pay the price with this type of performance. I have a hard time justifying anything over $200 unless it blows my socks off. That's just me. It is obvious that there are those out there where this isn't an issue. Go ahead, spend without care. Do you! Wear what makes you happy. Happy hunting.

Dense woods with incense haze floating through branches. The woods are dry and not piney sweet, useful firewood rather than decoration. The vibe is austere yet comforting, like a quiet moment of reflection after a serious conversation in which you have to make a hard decision but you know it will all be okay in the end. This has all the things I like - sturdy wood foundation with a generous dose of resins and a mist of cool cypriol to finish it off. I just wish it wasn't quite so pricey.

Smells like the forest ground after a rainstorm. Like you just picked up a damp stick and you got a little bit of mud on your hands, but you don’t mind it. It’s a very realistic dirt petrichor scent if you are looking for it, but it has some yummy brighter elements that make it wearable. Perfect for a rainy night or a spring day.

I had high hopes for this one in my quest for the ultimate, atmospheric, meditative, forest walk scent but this doesn’t quite cut it. This is a really nice, deeply resinous but faint scent of freshly cut trees. Strangely addictive, but wasn’t quite what I was looking for personally. Less forest and more tree felling workshop

a very incensey/spicy take on a woodsy frag- i like the touches of cyrpriol and myrrh- it feels like being at an old catholic church and in a wooded glen simultaneously- not as grassy or fresh as i thought it would be, but a nice, rich spiced oak and juniper scent that's great for the colder months!

This smells like an old chapel in the middle of a damp forest, surprisingly I really like it. It does however lean a tad masculine for my taste but I would love this on my boyfriend

Fresh-cut wood, very green. Crisp, light, leans masculine. Enjoyed—especially how it lasted on my clothes. I find this one refreshing, good for when I need to clear my head.

This is really good- smells cedary and fresh. So woody. But the only thing is I can hardly smell it. Its barely perceptible and doesnt last but a minute. .

A realistic "fall" scent; you can smell the dying leaves & barks on the damp soil alongside moss and resins!

this is oaky and incense forward. sorta reminds me of what a church smells like.

Falling Trees achieves what it sets out to do, as the scent really gives a sense of a fallen trees meeting the understory of a forest. It also is a fragrance with an interesting development (during the 3-4 hours it lasts on my skin): opens very dry and woody and gradually mellows. And yet despite these qualities, it is a scent that evokes no feelings in me. Feels like a very accurate portrait made without any relation or expression of personality - whether positive or negative - being revealed. For me, this lack of spark ultimately makes it uninteresting to wear unfortunately, despite the scent's realism and development.

It’s giving wood. A forest gorge of just-felled, sap-stippled giants, somewhere between cedar and pine. Natural, raw. Fortunately, it’s not a Christmas candle spruce. I think the undercurrent of resin and amber is to thank for that. It also smells luxe. More “Arch Digest lodge in the Rockies” than “construction section of Home Depot,” but still. Wood. To be fair, Falling Trees does it well. It does what it says on the tin. Mental Snapshot: Freshly-lumbered timber, antique flannel, mountain mist. You're nuzzling the neck of the Brawny Man. Tl;dr: wood 🪵🪵

At first spray, you'll be greeted with absolutely gorgeous, mouthwatering, sinus-opening juniper. I would love it if it stayed like this, but I'm a fan of singular scents. As it dries down, the juniper fades significantly, and you're left with Salonpas (the pain relief patches) and sawdust. In my opinion, the myrrh is overpowered by the wood, and unfortunately the moss gives is a very traditional department store like finish. This pops my photorealistic bubble, but I really respect the artistry here!

This reminds me of DS&D's Bowmakers. It smells like cabins and conifers, which I always *think* I want to smell like, but when it comes down to it, it feels a bit too on-the-nose / straightforward. Yes, it smells like you just carried a new Christmas tree from your car into the living room, but once the novelty of that idea wears off, you can feel that it's lacking dimension.

Just accidentally spilled my sample of this over my carpet. My room now smells like the inside of an old, isolated church but in a ‘god is actually good’ kinda way. Not bad.

Very much woody and tree scent. Reminds me of camping and taking a walk in a secluded forest. More masculine leaning. It’s okay.

Good, not really for me though, way to spicy, smokey, and not a very realistic forest fragrance.

I’ve found my perfect scent. It takes me back to my summer of 2019. Me and my partner stayed in V Hotel Fizeaustraat in Amsterdam, and that’s exactly how that luxury hotel smells like (I still got some of their custom shower gel and lotion minis). I was looking for that scent everywhere and even emailed this hotel to get an idea what ingredients could be inside, they have a big Etika range of scented stuff and even have reed defusers but not perfume. So for me that’s scent definitely reminds of summer nights when it’s warm but still cold in the evenings. For me it opens up with a beautiful juniper and oak wood but after I can feel amber that gives me warm feeling like you feel when your mum or family around. I’m not gonna wear it everyday, not because it’s expensive but because it’s perfume for the mood. And if you like a sweet perfume that’s scent is not for you, it definitely not for everyone..

There is an auto-repair shop, rubber tire note happening on my skin that is nauseating to me. A personal scent memory is definitely spoiling this experience. On paper, I can tell that this is beautiful and somewhere in the realm of Bo by Liis. I love the Juniper note. Just wish this worked for me.

Unfortunately on me, all I get is a spicy ambery spicy, screechy blast. Mostly incense and myrrh, none of the woodier notes manifested on my skin- The settle just turned into burnt tires/burnt rubber on me. Disappointed but this is why I buy samples and not an entire bottle

I’ll have to revisit this in the fall to see how I feel about it. It does truly evoke a beautiful autumn forest, damp leaves and gray skies. It’s a bit too masculine for my taste, but perhaps it’s been long enough to give it another shot.

Had to scrub this one off immediately, smells like the inside of an IKEA. No clue. Might have to give it a fair shot but it just smelled like plastic wrap to me

truly hated this one...smelled like straight smoke to me. so strong i felt suffocated. my mother smelled it all the way downstairs after i tried it, and it was lingering in my hair even the next morning. aggressive, shockingly intense, lacking any complexity

The overall scent of this is very nice, but not a revelation. It is a very subtle, calm, incense and wood scent. Quite dry. It has very fleeting moments that it is beautiful, when the incense mixes with a sort of platonic ideal of "wood". This was on my list of forest-y fragrances to try, and while it captures a nice nature adjacent profile, it doesn't really capture the raw feeling of actually being outside in a forest. This is no easy task, and I am quickly finding out there is not really any substitute for the real thing. How do you capture the vast diversity of flora and fauna in a forest, that has been baked in sun, soaked in rain, and stirred by the wind? You just don't. The impossibility of the task shouldn't stop us from trying, however. What this does capture is the feeling of being in a spa. Not that I have a vast breadth of experience to pull from on spas...but it is what I imagine a beautifully designed spa to smell like. Subtle incenses, saunas with vast wood benches, and a feeling of faux zen freshness. This is where Falling Trees succeeds to me: it captures a hard to define zone between relaxation and refreshed mental alertness. Not a lethargic, narcotic relaxation or a citrusy, slap in the face alertness. This is the smell of relaxation and mental clarity that having been born to a place of wealth and success can afford. Which leads me to where this fragrance fails: it just lacks roots, grit, dirt, and maybe a bit of a soul. It is too clean, safe, and facsimile of forest. It is also pretty low sillage, even shorter longevity, and is only offered in 100ml for $200 USD. I would probably consider getting a 15 or 30ml of this is it were offered for an under $100 price point. For those times when I just want to run a bath, pamper myself, and pretend that I won't have to toil away at a day job in some shape or form the rest of my days.
