Chaz

Ahh, the Revlon rugged blast that is Chaz, "fragrance that's almost as interesting as the men who wear it." This was the slogan that appeared in the ads that featured Tom Selleck in 1979 donned in a tux, cowboy hat, and cowboy boots. The Marlboro Man made room for the Chaz Man as this was the peak of numerous hairy-chested macho juices on men's dressers, next to their Right Guard, Barbasol, and Kiwi shoe polish. Essentially the male's answer to the wildly successful liberated lady's Charlie from Revlon, Chaz could very well be considered the liberated man's cologne, if you catch my drift. It was produced by Revlon until the grave robber of dead perfume brands, Jean Phillipe, launched their own hollow, sad zombie resurrection (pictured above). To fully appreciate Chaz, one must grab a Revlon-produced bottle and take in all of its musky, spicy bravado. One may argue this is a descendant of the IBQ mob of leather chypres like Aramis, Azuree, with the musks turned up to 11, and a big, oily, muscled carnation "insert your choice of onomatopoeia here." It's low baritone utters "who's your daddy?" and will bring you to your knees. This daddy is in tight jeans and a white tank, dancing amongst writhing bodies to the Passengers' "Hot Leather": "you can make it, honey can you shake, baby they can walk we can run..." This almost makes me want to grow back my moustache. Yow.

My comments below relate to the original Revlon formulation. I ordered a spray bottle of the Jean Philippe formulation and it isn't what I recall. A girlfriend gave me a bottle of original Chaz cologne for Christmas during my senior year of college - the era of boot-cut Levi's, Frye boots, and the battle between rock and disco. I wear only fragrances that appeal to me, and I wore Chaz almost exclusively for the rest of my senior year. Thus my opinion is that it is an outstanding fall/winter nighttime fragrance. Because it was strong, I tended to wear it only for going out at night. Chaz always received a great response from my girlfriends and my friends' dates and girlfriends. It is vaguely oriental with a deep, almost musky woody-citrusy effect that suited that era extremely well, still evokes great memories, and remains relevant today. I take advantage of the fact that you can still find original Chaz via web outlets.

Chaz.... ....I have been on a binge for traditional drugstore cologne and besides British Stirling, Stetson and English Leather, Chaz was part of it. The reason why these are still around is quite simple... They are all genuine good smelling cologne. I don't usually buy splash cologne but i made an exemption. Chaz is a warm, cozy and comforting cologne. It reminds me a bit of Mandate, which is produced by Eden Classics but it was once part of Shulton i believe. It is a perfect example of a 70s cologne and many similar and still popular fragrances of the same character were released at that time. For a cologne it is quite strong and it is well blended.

This came on my radar after a fellow posted it as their #SOTD on Basenotes. Intrigued, I made a deal with a seller for a vintage gift set (cologne and aftershave) by Revlon - Chaz Division. If there's a clear distinction between masculine scents of the 1970s and 1980s, Chaz makes it. This has an older classic vibe which I'm guessing is a result of the musk note in its base. It's very nice and I very much like it. Recommend. 👍 (NOTE: Do not buy the bottle pictured here. It's terrible both in smell and performance, and it smells nothing like the OG.

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 074 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased June 2019 Chaz Classic is my cheapest bottle of perfume. You get a lot for 75 mL volume. One of my dumb reaches, it's a ridiculously awesome manly old thing. Amber, floral, musk, woody and leather-like at once. It's almost a chypre on the sweet end. The dry down of Jacques Bogart Arabian Nights reminds me of Chaz Classic in its first 15 minutes.

Chaz is a floral fougere that comes across almost like a leathery chypre. It bears more than a passing resemblance to Balenciaga's Portos, which lacks the distinctive Tonka note of a true fougere, but otherwise has many similarities --- fresh citrus and green topnotes giving way to wood, spices, moss and leather. A product of the disco era, it does have some of that brashness about it, but also a sophistication well beyond that of John Travolta's Tony Manero character in "Saturday Night Fever." I have the original Revlon formula, which is quite long-lasting on my skin. H&R's Fragrance Guide lists the notes as: TOP: Lavender, rosemary, laurel, bergamot, lemon MIDDLE: Geranium, carnation, pine, coriander, cinnamon, clary sage, cyclamen BASE: Cedarwood, moss, musk, tonka, amber Splash on some Chaz, put on the Trammps' "Disco Inferno" and burn the mutha' down!

I wore CHAZ often as a teenager in the 1970's. I literally have not smelled it since then. I'm surprised the above olfactive pyramid doesn't classify it as a leather scent, because that's how I remember it, somehow. Not merely an herbal/musk thing. I do recall that it contained a prominent IBQ (Isobutyl Quinoline) note, which put it somewhat in the family of ARAMIS and Lauder AZUREE. Though inexpensive, it was very good-smelling and masculine, and had good longevity. I haven't sniffed the current version, but I wouldn't be surprised if they'd tinkered and toyed with the formula to make it less impressive than it was, especially given that oakmoss was a major component of it. Let us all weep for the ousting of oakmoss from modern perfumery; it's akin to telling a carpenter he can no longer saw pine wood.

I have the older Chaz and the newer Chaz( the one pictured) The older far outperforms the newer. The Older version is in short squatty bottle, gold cap. The newer has a paper label..

Lots of dislike for this one but no reviews. Chaz was originally marketd by Revlon but eventually went out of production only to be picked up by the dead fragrance graverobbing company that is Jean Philippe. I decided to get this one after discovering that most of the newly released male fragrances are mainly aimed at 1) Frat boys who want to be gangsta 2) Frat boys who have just joined the corporate world 3) Fratboys who are clubbing in Vegas on the weekend. I figure these old fragrances must still be around for a reason, and I want to know what that reason is. And if smokin' hot Tom Selleck endorsed it in the 80s, well, it had to have SOMETHING going for it! Chaz arrived in its somewhat cheap bottle and box. No surprises there because it is cheap. But the big surprise is the juice. I LOVE it! It has a 70s light greeny/shaving foam vibe that I find really impressive. As a reference point, If you like YSL's Rive Gauche for men then it is like a lighter version of that. I actually think its better because the green notes come to the front after a while and create a surprisiningly sexy scent that is light yet persistent. Longevity is on the weak side but at this price who cares? It's now in my top 5 and this comes from someone who normally goes for high end and niche fragrances. Tom Ford has gone to the storage drawer for now. I will try and purchase the original Revlon formula and report back. If anyone has sample I'd be really grateful and happy to swap. I've read some reports that say the original is even better and the current formula is but a weak imitation. I bloody well hope so because I think I might have discovered a trail to my fragrance holy grail!

This smells like Mr. Azzaro Pour Homme is chewing a spicy pink gumball on the way to the barbershop. I have a vintage 2 oz splash bottle. This smells nothing like Braggi which is a bone dry leather and oakmoss. It does remind be a bit of Aramis Tuscany's herbal sweetness but Azzaro is probably a more direct line. I always like Azzaro but this one can sometimes be just a little too bubble gum and the initial sweetness you get when you do your minute of chewing. But that's an aspect that only comes out in hot weather. I generally hate sweet perfumes. Zino, Boss No. 1, Lapidus pour homme, Old Spice and this are about as sweet as I like them. Btw I love Zino. Modern Heritage (my bottle is 2021 I think) though is over the line. Edit: 12 hours later it retains that spiciness. The associations I made with Azarro aren't quite as clear. The one that comes to mind is now a softer Laura Biagiotti Uomo or the opening of current Paco Rabanne pour homme. Something prickles the nose and it's addicting.

I originally reviewed the Jean Phillipe version of Chaz, and liked it so much that I sought out the original blend that was sold by Revlon in the 70s. I managed to get hold of the original juice and it is a MONSTER! I’ve never smelled any fragrance so overpowering. It’s like the current version on steroids after going 16 winning rounds with Rocky in a leather jockstrap. Although the original adverts had Tom Selleck I don’t even think that he was butch or hairy enough to endorse this beast. It has a slight wiff of the current version but dries down to a very heavy/sweaty/boozy/soapy scent that will stop men, women, children and animals in their tracks. A nuclear bombshell of a fragrance that not only announces its presence by smacking you in the sinuses but also punches you in the stomach and stomps on your balls as well. After wearing this for a full day I had to go home and have a Scotch and a cold shower. I think it will be a few more months before I’m ready for round 2.

Smelling this off the atomizer it reminded me of Stetson, and I hoped it would dry down as nice as Stetson. Alas, without the creamy sweetness of Stetson's amber, vanilla and honey, it did not. Chaz seems to have an unlisted aldehyde note manifesting pretty prominently. Not too far off Givenchy Gentleman of 1973. The mossy and musky accords are higher on the accord stack than is represented on this page. The lavender note is subdued, and Chaz's Aromatic Fougere bonifides are tenuous. This is OK and certainly nostalgic, but Stetson > Chaz.

If this were re-released as a stronger EDT version, it would sell. Beautiful fragrance, but so damned WEAK. What a shame. Don't bother spraying this on your skin, because it disappears in 10 minutes flat. Spray heavily on your shirt. About 5 to 7 sprays on the exact same spot. Lasts for a few hours. Gorgeous scent. But stupidly watered down. What the hell were they thinking? It could have been a hit.

I have 2.5oz bottle pictured and it smells great, however it last about as a long as a fart in the wind. I’m going to pony up for a vintage bottle I think.

If I were to describe Chaz in one word.... Grandpa!
