Byzance Gold

At first I got a very strong dark unsweetened blackcurrant and patchouli smell, strangely smelling almost like dirty, rotting grapes. I almost became disappointed but then gradually tonka bean and rose started to emerge, patchouli toned down a lot and the blackcurrant scent became sweater and warmer, although still somewhat dark, very addictive, I have enjoyed throughout the day. Long lasting with moderate projection. It gives Barenia type of perfume vibe, a very good quality, addictive fruichouli.

Love it but I agree that this should have been in the blue bottle, being a sensual rose fruitchouli. It's juicy and fresh, while the original Byzance is kinda spicy, rich and dense. I really love black currant scents, so Byzance Gold is easy for me!

I love this fragrance. I love all its ingredients and most of all it is long lasting on my skin it lasts all day. It's different from all my sweet vanilla and sugar scents, which have started to become stale to me.

I don’t think it smells like Chloe but definitely same vibe same family. I love it

I blind bought this and I’d never seen it for sale anywhere before. First sniff of the nozzle: not sure I like it. It’s teetering off the end of the eighties. Spray it on anyway: mmmm maybe I do like this It smells like something a Narciso was based off Then it doesn’t. It cycles fast from a touch of civet, sweet, floral, musk feminine into something more masculine but not full on manly man fragrance via Roos and Roos Mia Mentha Religiosa while maintaining a background of something from Aramis New West for women, and it it feels like I’ve had my head snapped back by a rollercoaster going through a tunnel of all the nineties perfumes in small groups of notes. I haven’t really been this baffled by a fragrance in a long time, but it’s a ride! I like it! It’s fun, you can keep sniffing it and something else pops to the surface. Which I would say is a rarity these days. Try it if you like: slow films, books that are more about character than plot, hand drawn comics, the nineties

It opens smoky, but with every minute it turns fruity. I cannot honestly say I can name the fruits. And they are giving way to a fruity rose, with patchouli base. It zings on skin. Jasmine joins the rose. Cedar is the strongest in the base. It is indulgent and ornamental. It wears very well and lasts long. A beautiful chypre fruitchouli. Such a gloriously fruity rose with just enough of patchouli and cedar to make it dark and mysterious. The longer it is on skin the prettier.

This is a really interesting perfume to me. In the very first moments, it really reminds me of Pomegranate Noir - fruity and spicy. It then calms down into a spicy rose with patchouli and cedar. It quietens quite quickly so it’s not going to be a bombastic room filler - but they don’t all need to be. I’m trying this on a muggy, rainy Scottish ‘summer’ day - but crisp autumn is when this will really shine.

Opening notes feel quite sharp and chypre-esque. Once it settles, it seems to channel Gucci Rush on my skin, and I'm here for it. The bottle is stunning. Good quality lid (nice and heavy) with a fantastic atomiser. Performance is moderate. Silage is quite heady. I think it is more suited to the Autumn/Winter seasons.

I already own Byzance 2019 and Girl, both of which I like very much, but I cannot make up my mind about this scent. The opening is pretty harsh and synthetically fruity, then in about 20 minutes it sits on skin as a pleasant mixture of litchi, raspberry and rose. Inoffensive, intimate fruity fragrance that ultimately remains absolutely redundant, especially if you own 100 perfumes like myself. For most of the time there is something synthetic, cheap and almost vintage about it. There's nothing gold in it, really.

Nothing special. I expected something better. This is typical fruitchouli... I like a different type of patchouli, here it is very green...

Byzance, by Rochas, was launched in 1987. Its fragrance was floral-oriental, full of aldehydes, and with a classic personality. A great success! Later, in 1995, the brand launched a flanker called Byzantine and, in 2017, an Eau de Toilette version, which fell into public oblivion. In 2019, Byzance was relaunched completely (proposal, concept, and fragrance). The look caught attention and disturbed the competition. The fragrance, however, did not exceed the expectations of many users hoping for a composition that, at least, resembled the original. But it appealed to women who love creamy vanilla fragrances with a sophisticated signature. In 2022, Byzance Gold Eau de Parfum was launched, but without much fanfare. The inspiration was modern fairy tales and the fantasy of the Arabian Nights. The beautiful bottle now seduces like luminous gold and the black ribbon reinforces the haute couture touch. The new fragrance was created by Michel Almairac and is classified as chypre-floral-fruity. It opens with a spicy accord of red berries (raspberry and black currant) and lychee. The top notes introduce a floral and radiant body with notes of rose and jasmine, as well as a beautiful touch of patchouli. Finally, musk, cedar, and tonka bean guarantee a sensual dry down. When touches the skin, Byzance Gold is like an explosion of roses and raspberries dipped in a lychee lotion. And that's what remains – at least on me – most of the time. Of course, you can notice a blazing nuance here (black currant) and a warmer there (patchouli). Still, the fragrance follows that “fruitchouli” style similar to others on the market. A characteristic that is repeated here is the low projection. The durability is good, but the fragrance really stays very close to the skin, focusing on people who prefer a fragrant aura rather than something invasive and with a bigger trail. Another point that stands out to my eyes (and nose), is the low suitability of the product for the concept. Particularly, it would make more sense for me to find the Byzance Eau de Parfum (2019) fragrance in this Byzance Gold bottle and vice versa. And as much as, most of the time, I like the fragrances from the Rochas brand, I must admit that this one disappointed me. For a Gold version – generally marketed for special nights –, it is too innocent, it deserves a much larger dose of the fruity opening accord, in order to make an impact, and it doesn't deliver what it costs. Apparently, Byzantine gold doesn't have that much value.

My skin can’t take this without a very screechy opening that resembles something really sour. Maybe it’s the blackcurrant? After 5 long minutes it settles and I don’t need to hold my breath, it is flowery and rich, to my surprise. I smell what I think it’s honey, but it’s overtaken by a heavy patchouli.

I can't find this anywhere, including Rochas's online store. I hate black currant, so maybe it doesn't matter, but I have new and vintage versions of Byzance in EDT and EDP, along with Byzantine, so I do want to at least try this one. Guess I'll have to investigate further.

A chypre fruity rose but very faint. Like a multi-photoshopped version of La fille de Berlin or Portrait of a Lady.
