Open

I have big love for Roger and Gallet Open; it has all the elements that make me swoon. The somewhat aldehydic opening redolent with aromatics, including notable sage and thyme, that merge with a tobacco note that is completely devoid of gratuitous sweetness, reminiscent of Burley leaves. There is a texture to it that is nearly agrestic, sort of a countryside flair that I also pick up from the likes of other winners such as Aramis Devin and Hermes Rocabar. It's sensible yet complex; it certainly isn't modern, but who's counting anyway? This is a fragrance for the ages, my friends. Its elegance and form belies its shockingly low price tag: price to quality ratio is astonishing. When discovering stunning fragrances such as these, it really puts it all into perspective. It brings light to the pretensions, the pomp and circumstance of frag culture. We put value on the commodity, the illusion of opulence and aspiration that is tied to a hefty price tag, and we often lose sight of our own judgments and discretion. It's much like wine culture and other fineries, the bait and switch for those who don't discern without clear reference points will mistake a bottle of Two Buck Chuck for Château d'Yquem. Are we really reading with our own senses, or are we relying on others to qualify and quantify? Discernment means breaking down those illusions and really drinking in with the senses and making a personal assessment. It's why there are fragrance enthusiasts who refuse to confine to tight, neat tribes of 'niche,' 'designer,' and the like; they refuse to use price and prestige as a gauge; they know the spice of life no matter what the provenance of price tag. This is wisdom, and Open, aptly-named, is testament to that.

Open by Roger & Gallet is a fragrance that I find myself gravitating toward despite my own good sense. After all, when the opening hits my nostrils nothing about it really stands out except quite pronounced tobacco note. After about a half hour, the tobacco note calms down and blends with the citrus and lavender notes to create something that is far greater than the sum of its parts. I catch whiffs of myself throughout the day and it gives me joy, and this is what perfumery is all about to me. This fragrance touches something basic and dare I say primal, at least for me, because I have much more expensive fragrances, and I have fragrances that I might even say I like better; nevertheless, I find myself grabbing this one at least one or two days a week despite myself. To boot, this one is definitely what some might be tempted to call a "powerhouse" fragrance. Two or three sprays, one of my neck, one on my chest, and one on my shirt, and this tank engine lasts me all day. Let me just say a word or two about the flankers, the gold, white, and black formulas. Of them, the gold is quite elegant and long-lasting. It is essentially Open without the tobacco note. The white is an oddity; it is quite floral. Lastly, the black is weak as a kitten. Loads you down with oakmoss, which is nice, but on me the stuff is gone in less than an hour, so I almost never wear it out but sometimes use it before I go to bed. So, my rankings are 1. Open 2 .Gold 3. White, and 4. Black.

Open by R&G is one of few colognes which is still available at a fraction of the price. My reason for buying this juice is based on the fact that it isn't whimsical. Rather, a full body cologne with several layers giving it a well balanced blend of herbal/smokey vib at first spray. As it settles it sheds that smokey vib and takes on a more softened tobacco/lavender mix with a slight sweet/herbal base note coming from sage, thyme and patchouli. For some reason, my nose meter isn't able to pick up any citrus/bargamot notes. Longevity and Sillage is moderate which is better than some of the new colognes out on the market today. Some might think that this juice is out dated or its not in line with what people expect today. If you think about what's out on the market today, most mainstream colognes you're paying for is more about name and hype rather than what's in the bottle. Don't get me wrong, you can still buy a new released cologne that's worth it...unfortunately there's very few of them compared to what was being produced back in the late 70s..through the 80s into the early 90s. Most might consider this cologne for someone whose in their late 40s and up. In my opinion colognes or purfumes should be what you enjoy rather than tagging it to age group. This juice is definite keeper..perfect during the fall-winter months excellent for evening wear. 8/10

EvilheroJoseph's experience with this one is not uncommon. At first wearing, this is powerful, machismo, over the top. I put in my "to sell" area after my first try. But I always try things at least twice before pulling the trigger, especially since this was discontinued. Second time was like "this is amazing, unique, makes me feel mature and virile." It lasts a very long time. Now I can't get enough of it. Fortunately, as of December 2024, IT IS AVAILABLE AGAIN FOR AROUND $25. Dry, the tobacco is the real unsweetened leaf (stay away, Tobacco Vanille fans), and the spices are to volume 11. If you are the right kind of guy, this will grow on you. An incredible fragrance at an incredible price. R&G was a revered brand from, I believe, the 1800's France, but has now been bought and sold by Loreal and SAS. And since these conglomerates only care about profits, and this one is under most people's radar, it will probably be discontinued again soon, or at least reformulated beyond recognition. Can't imagine a woman, or a guy under 25, wanting to wear this, and it is on the opposite end of the scale from freshies, blues, gourmands and cinnamon/ambers. Despite my hundreds of bottles, this may actually be the first backup bottle I have ever bought. It's that good.

Open was another one of my blind purchases and it brought me extreme satisfaction. Open has the type of fragrance made for active and dominant men. I go further: it was designed for men with an open mind to the world and its passions. Its fragrance is extremely refined, manly and powerful, remaining on the skin for more than six hours, with great intensity. Its freshness, resulting from the Amalfi lemon and sage, combined with the drier notes of vetiver and tobacco, at the base, make it a champion of praise. When I wear this perfume, I have the feeling of being the most confident and elegant man in the world. And best of all, it didn't cost much and is a little known perfume (at least by Brazilians), which makes it even more exclusive, in a certain way.

My favorite scent. Initial burst of sharp citrus and lavender. As it dries down, the citrus gives way to more green, lavender and a hint of cigarette ash, in a clean way. Stays soapy, but a touch smoky. Some would say it smells dated or stuffy, but to me it is classy while rough around the edges. Working class sophistication. Easily works in an office, out for the evening, or in the garage working on a car. If this is truly discontinued, that is sad. There is plenty of room for this beauty in the world of modern sweetness. I wear this year-round, but it does work better on cooler days. I will be buying backups while still reasonably priced. If you like Quorum, Sung Homme, Polo Green, Paco Rabanne etc, you will like this.

$30? Are you kidding me? This is a super easy reach. Its a very fresh fougere good for any occasion that you want to smell fresh and clean. I don't agree with the seasonal ratings as I feel that it would do great on a sunny summer afternoon in the sun. Its creamy and well blended. I don't get any Patchouli which is why people probably didn't select summer which makes me wonder if they even tried it. It will make for a perfect gym scent. I tried it out with only 3 sprays and it put me in a scent bubble for a good 4 hours. I need to find a bottle of Black as I have heard that its amazing too. 8/10... 9/10 if you include the price!

Smokey-Green-Earthy-Fresh (barbershop style) with all parts equal.. Wasn't a fan of the opening at first but wait 15 minutes and this thing reveals just how awesome it is. By the 3rd wearing I'm actually ok with the strong smokey opening and enjoying the drydown even more. This is a mature masculine masterpiece at a steal of a price. Performance is 12+ for me, but I spray clothes as well. Sillage is a little above average, not beastly at all. This juice is fantastic but you gotta give it a few wearings to get to know it. Crowd pleasing...no. Personal statement of a confident alpha male with taste...yes! 10/10 easy.

people see the brand and price tag, they will be like, no bro its synthetic mess. if Creed released this, people would pay with their kidney. so much class, so long lasting yet not chocking. this is suit and tie version of kouros, lapidus, aramis, bogarts in the world. im so happy I own this now. LOVE the lemon and tobacco with spicy lavender, best for winter but with limited sprays, can be used whole year. i GIB this 10/10 for its sheer beauty and simplicity. it transports me back to my school days. hard to find, but dont pay more than 30 USD for this. this can be had for that price range

Stunning aromatic beauty at its best! 1985 bottled. R&G held a Tennis Cup at the time played on clay and I think that is what the name and the design refers to. The amalfi lemon, lavender, sage, thyme and tobacco blend is of outstanding quality. Very good performance also and perfect price vs quality ratio. Typical creation of its time, still I sometimes sense it as a combination of Aramis Havana & Givenchy Insense with a hint of Jacomo de Jacomo. Tells a tale a better times, glory days!

Smells super old fashioned and masculine, great grandpa's ideal of a man. A scent like pure herbal thyme soap next to a cigar. I can't see myself pulling this off on it's own, but quality is great and it's amazing for layering with ambers and vanillas! I lied. After some maceration this is so divine in the drydown that I rock it without shame. so comforting and masculine. lightly golden, cozy tobacco heaven.

This is a master of woody scents. I bought this blind on first spray I wasn’t sure if this is for me. But I was wrong the woody and spicy notes started kicking in and I was happy that I got this EDT. It’s really for a man, very masculine, I don’t think this is retro this is all time fragrance. I still smell this after 10 hours. My ratings out of 10-: Longevity – 9.5 Scent -9.5 Silage 9 Overall 9.50

When I was a kid my grandad smoked a pipe. He had a large pipe collection, and he'd let me puff on one of the empty ones to play-smoke along with him. Open returns me to being four years old. It perfectly captures that burnt tobacco residue aroma. The other notes in it clean it up somewhat, but still, this has to be the quintessential dirty tobacco fragrance. It is pretty incredible sauce.

This used to be my dad's signature perfume, then little me. So nostalgia makes it almost impossible to judge it fairly. It's an old-school piece of art. Absolute perfection. Tobacco and citrus blend in the most beautiful way. I just received this as a gift a few days ago—an old bottle. It still smells great. Someday I'm going to visit a custom perfumer to recreate this for me. :))

Finally....Just got another bottle after many years. This is gorgeous! A very potent "old school" floral, soapy tobacco fragrance. Lasts and projects excellently. The sillage is really lovely. As someone said, it IS a little like Sung Homme, except Open has that lovely tobacco note and mellow spices. Delightful product from the great Roger & Gallet and definitely in my top ten!

A genuine classic frag! The opening is quite overwhelming at first, very smokey and "bitter". However, give it 30-40 minutes and you will be rewarded with a very masculine, nostalgic and elegant scent. Over the course of a couple of hours, the base notes will finally settle in and embrace you with their warmth for a good few hours more. Love it.

Overall, Open wears like a scent from the early 1970s with a somewhat powdery, boozy, dry, aromatic richness, yet the herbal vetiver finish anticipates the late-2000s. Like other 20th century tobacco fragrances for men, the lovely note is pervading without blaring. Open is soapy, earthy, reserved, sophisticated, cozy, sexy, and very, very good.

This is a great woody aromatic fragrance. The spices are really nice. This fragrance is not for everyone it’s kind of love or hate fragrance. I suggest try before you buy. The longevity is excellent, projection and silage is very good. Drydown is very nice. I am not sure if any one below 25 yrs will use it. But yes my score is 8.5/10

One of my best blind buys of 2025. It’s a classic masculine scent—fresh citrus and aromatic herbs on top, with a warm tobacco-vetiver base. Rich, elegant and unmistakably retro without feeling outdated. Great longevity and a surprisingly refined character for the price. A timeless gentleman’s fragrance I’m glad I discovered.

What I get here are flash backs of Antaues, Kiton and Havana. A great scent. It's like when I prepared French dinners and could smell the freshly cut sage and thyme on my hands for hours afterwards. Open is that burst of herbs. Very genuinly done. Amazing you can get 100 ml of it for 40 euro.

I love this one. Definitely for mature. For the price you pay for this, its a gem. I can feel the excellent combination of lemon, tobacco and patchuli. Makes you feel fresh and confident throughout the day. Stays on for 8+ hours on clothes, perfect for office wear.

A so classic scent the citrus and tobacco conquered especially at the opening, herbs and lemon are obvious at the drydown, longevity is superb 8 to 10 hours i hope i can try the other flankers of this one,how come there is no manufacturing year for this scent!!

Awesomely Fantastic. This is what makes one feel earthy, grounded, matured, one who knows what they want. Not disturbing anyone round. Lovelllllllyyyyy. Not for the ones who like to have SWEET Scents like these days.

A lovely, potent perfume. I don't consider this to be a particularly tobacco fragrance. It's more mossy/floral/soapy. Reminds me of Chevignon for Men. Anyhow, Open projects and lasts beautifully well.

Amazing, fabulous , old school fragrance. I am not sure about new formulations as i have not tried any, but for the older one, highly recommended. It is a gentlemen cologne.

This is magnificent. It's strong and dark yet, not overpowering. It's the essence of Charles Bronson.

Extraordinary!!!!! A blind purchase, highly recommended by a coworker who said she found it most appealing when her husband wore it. Herself clearly having made selections of perfumes which I always found to be agreeable. I recall how good she always smelled. She told me she had been unsuccessful in tracking down Open in Australia, but whenever they were in Dubai that she would get some. I found it on one of the online merchants sites and made the purchase along with other products. Extraordinary!!! To this day I don't know if I like it or not, unusual for me. When I first smelled it I was literally shocked by this fragrance, I've never had such a reaction to any fragrance before. It provoked a deep reaction in me as bizarre as it sounds. It lasted on my skin for many hours and I remember thinking, my God will I ever get the smell off me. I had applied it to my arm as an initial test point. I was however so intrigued by it and my reaction to it that I felt compelled to leave it on and see what it would do. It was some three weeks before I would pluck up the courage to apply it again, this time in the normal way, not just on an arm. Again mixed feelings but as it went through its metamorphosis I found it settled. It smelled less like burning plastic and more warm and woody, but kind of soapy. It has many layers and is very complex. It makes a strong statement, is very masculine but for sure it's a case of less is more. I find it interesting because with fragrances I usually like them or I don't. It's definitely one that warrants a fair go because of its complexity and is many layers. I'm intrigued by it and will persevere because I think it has extraordinary qualities.

Bought in 1987, 18 years old, a small bottle of Open by Roger Gallet splash, but I was too young to be able to use a fougere perfume like Caron pour homme, very similar and very pleasant with a very present lavender, lemon and vanilla but at the time I preferred other types of perfumes. I found this small bottle with little liquid left and it was a nice surprise, the old-style scent has held up quite well, of course you have to like the lavender mixed with tobacco, lemon, vetiver, thyme and patchouli, very pleasant and masculine but it would also be good for a woman with a decent longevity. Small Zombie masterpiece to buy again, perhaps it could be an alternative to soulless and expensive perfumes of today. I want to find it again

Filling the opening is Spices, Green, and Resinous woods, with a zesty Citrus background. When I first tried Open it was surprisingly potent to me, I was expecting it to be an Eau de Cologne strength. It is a full-bodied, sharp and rich EDT, with excellent sillage. Moss, Vetiver, Sandalwood, and Amber contribute to the scent's masculine soapy overtone that lingers throughout the heart and base notes. The soapiness is even present during the opening. There is a very light peppery sharpness in the background that lasts for the life of the scent. This was my first Roger & Gallet fragrance and I was impressed. I find I am reaching for Open more and more as a regular daily spritz. Energizing. Very well done and long lasting.

You know that smell when you leave your clothes outside to dry, but it is winter and everyone has the fireplace on and the clothes stink like smoke once they are dry ? Combine this smell with an aromatic top of a soap and the result is this. Havanna smells much better, tobacco leaves without the smoke smell. Bought once to try it blind buy after havanna and I like it, but I won't be buying it again. Edit: this perfume in time has grown on me, holy shit I actually love this now, it feels so old school, makes you smell like a clean dirty badass, reminds me of wolverine in 1973

This is what I wear when I need to smell "fresh" and a feminine chypre won't cut it. My faves are listed: patchouli, vetiver, lavender. As a woman, I'll straddle the gender fence and wear an aromatic that has these notes. It smells gorgeous on me when blended with a "clean" floral, woodsy version of Egyptian musk. It creates a lush balance of masculine and feminine. Don't care for the citrus notes, but it settles wonderfully into a deep, warm green scent with a touch of musk. It's especially good after a shower with Bath and Bodyworks 'Eucalyptus Spearmint' body cream.

Okay, so my weird wife loves this perfume (on her 🙄 & me & on anyone under the sun 🫣) since her dad used to wear this & i tried this out 10yrs ago. This used to be a banger, strong old school barbershop frag, but OPEN is no longer available on R&G website, however its still available online. Recent purchase from Amazon.com had a leaky atomizer. If it was og (smelled the same) then Sillage has also dropped significantly. Its no longer the cheapie bad boy. Plz do check product originality via barcode or checkfresh.com. Tread carefully. Old bottles: 9/10 New bottle: 5/10

An old fashioned but classy scent. Aromatic and Herbaceous with that familiar 80s style lavender and lemon opening. It's bright, warm, well-rounded but also masculine. As this scent dries down, you will likely be left with fresh tobacco and modest amounts of patchouli and maybe some oakmoss (not a listed note) in the base. I like to think of this scent as the more casual, younger brother to Havane by Aramis. A great and inexpensive option for the cooler weather in spring. Go easier on the trigger if you're wearing this to the office. Daytime. Age: 40+

Stunning opening, with lemon (nice, even if nothing like Amalfi's), lavender and aromatics. Invigorating. Classic but contemporary. The base will go on a strong impression of tobacco made by a dark (harsh) soapy moss, that despite my attraction for vintage fragrances, results dated to my nose. No detectable vetiver. Still, it's hard to do better in that category in that price range, but I would recommend Aramis Havana or Montana Parfum d'Homme to whom looks for one in that category, over this one. Just a like for me.

Gorgeous! Full disclosure: I haven’t tried it. Stopped a woman in the store today and told her she smelled great! She said people tell her that all the time. It was a cosy, spa-like herbal scent that kept me circling back to where she stood. “It’s actually a men’s cologne,” (this is no deterrent to me. My nose likes what it likes). I’m not shy, and asked what she was wearing. She said “Open, and I can only get it online.” Maybe I’ll spring for a bottle. Fantastic stuff!

I find Roger & Gallet Open For Men a very pleasant surprise. It has a refined presence, which reminds me of an oldschool luxury soap. It's fresh, but dry, elegant and a little bit floral with woody undertones. Can't detect these tobacco leaves that others are talking about. It's not a contemporary fragrance, but I don't find it grandpa-smelling at all. I would describe it as an oldschool classic for the modern gentleman. Definitely a strong like from me.

A very classic old aged fragrance my father use to have. It so masculine and well blended that you will not find another fragrance within this price tag as good as this one. The longevity and projection is very very good. The top notes are very spicy and aromatic but what i love about this perfume is the tobacco mixed with citrus notes in base which lasts on you for more then 6 hours. A great old school highly complimented fragrance. A MUST TRY!!!

Another old school perfume with a slightly bitter lavender citrus opening and a soapy tobacco woody dry down. it is very linear after the initial notes and that is a good thing because the wonderful dry down goes on forever. from the same family tree as quorum, Polo Green, Paco Rabanne PH, Boss No.1,etc so if you like any of those, you will appreciate this as well. This is a simple, understated masculine fragrance and I like it a lot. 8/10

Beautiful old school! It's a bit conservative compared to today's fragrance for ..... however, sophisticated and definitely masculine pieces! Soap, mossy, aromatic ingredients competing for it, however the sumptuous quality higher category! After 40 years of faithful companion in everyday life and not last conquest .... My assessment 8/10 Stable classic fragrance. Definitely worth a try!

Again, this shows that high price doesn't really mean shit. This easily rubs shoulders with the likes of Bois Du Portugal and Kouros. A fantastic aromatic lavender lemon tobacco. The opening can be too much for some, but the drydown is pure magic. Pure magic. It lets you know it's from 80's right away, and it doesn't shy away for it, but it's still very wearable. A true classic.

Opening is a challenging strong dislike (burned rubber mentioned below) of the three Open fragrances I have (black and white), BUT after 3 minutes a gorgeous light citrus thyme and sage and moderate tobacco scent. 7.5/10. great fresh and different prefer this over Havana and nothing like JdJacomo which is in a class all its own.

Take the most dry-smelling traditional soap you can find. Now dehydrate it in the sun until any shred of greenness has been parched out of it. Finally light and quickly stub-out a cigarette on it. - I can't quite make myself like this one, yet I keep on coming back to it. - To me it's not a fougere, there's no green-ness.

Aromatic slap from the 80s. Sour, citrusy, barbershop soapy. Lavender, lemon thyme and sage explode between tobacco, musk, patchouli and bitter vetiver. Classic and mature aurea. Strong, weighty, loud and energizing with a powdery-sweet and tidy finish. Addictive! You'll get noticed.

This is french style perfume.It's not fresh,sporty,or sweety scent.It'strong tobacco and dry herb scent.It's interested scent and very good for long lasting and sillage.If you're looking for something different from now scent,try this.But not for every one.

Oldskool and excellent value for money, but it takes a certain type to wear it. The younger crowd and soft men will probably dislike it. One could imagine Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad is wearing this while plotting his next psychopathic move.
