Vetyver

I received this as a present more than a decade ago when still a student. I never gave it much thought or wear as it seemed very old fashioned and childish to me. The sugared lemon notes are typical of cologne intented for children. Back then I hadn't even noticed the name on the frosted bottle and even if I did "vetyver" sure didn't mean anything to me back then. 10 years later I have come to a realisation. All the fragrances I wear contain vetiver. I don't go out looking for yet another vetiver fragrance it just so happens and I am not even very good at detecting vetiver in a perfume (although lately it seems to be in 60-70% of them). I found my old R&G vetiver in a drawer and without much thought I gave it a try. I don't know what happened, it is like nothing I remembered. Of course the sugary lemon-lychea notes are there but then the earthy green vetiver dominates the composition. I finally appreciate that cologne for what it is. Fleeting, yes and with minimal sillage and very innocent but somehow balanced and sensual. Much superior to anything the current R&G line has to offer (all of them discusting musky cocncoctions), it is a cheerful and personal scent that is intended to give small moments of pleasure to the wearer. It appeals to my inner child and this it ows at large to its naturalness. A vetiver to make you smile.

I just learned that this scent has been discontinued. Tragic! I first smelled R&G Vetyver in South Carolina on a breezy, warm January day. I wasn't paying any attention to whether I was smelling a fragrance for men or for women. This scent is simply lively and invigorating. It doesn't just make you want to get up and move on a Sunday morning - it makes you want to get up and do backflips. Just bought the last bar of soap they had at my local specialty beauty store. Will have to hunt for the cologne online!

Bought this in Harrods yesterday and It is very pleasant - simple vetiver with a smokyness and some crisp citrus. Not as sensual as comme des garcons which is going to be my standard vetiver henceforth.. better than Tom Ford and Givenchy. For the time being I shall layer the two however. this is a good into to vetiver - sort of lunch in Monaco or breakfast in Singapore. Oh and the notes provided here are wrong. All I get from it is Slight beramot citrus or neroli opening with Middle notes of vetiver and a drydown of vetiver with maybe ceder. Very pleasant. NO! STOP! I have had this for 3 weeks now and have nearly finished the bottle. It is Weak. It is too citrus. It is boring. I find myself using copius amounts of it just to get rid of it as it is irritating me looking at it on the dressing table among such talents as Hermes and Rabane. It smells of damp tobacco in the ash tray of a crappy French Tabac bar. It is the diet lite of vetivers, the Andy Garcia to Al Pacino.

Vetyver by Roger & Gallet is an Eau de Cologne, lighter than other vetiver dominant scents. It has a light citrus opening with spices. The vetiver is raw and earthy, it smells like it was just pulled out of the ground. There is a light floral note in the heart. The base is a lightly sweet Mossy-Tonka, but not too sweet. The sweetness comes from both the Tonka and the light floral note. An Amber note in the base gives the sweet notes a little sharpness. There is Cedarwood in the dry down. After a few hours what is left is a light smokiness, like a whiff of burning wood. Nice touch. This is great for an all-over spray right out of the shower. Longevity is average for an EdC. R&G's Vetyver is an excellent fragrance. Elegant in a natural, earthy way.

This one is lemon and spice with a delicate smoky vetiver base. It is quite refreshing while it lasts, but as is my experience with vetiver-based fragrances, I get less than one hour no matter how many sprays. Great initial blast, then gone. In terms of composition, I like it very much even though the heavy-handed lemon sort of reminds me of Pledge, but that's just because I grew up with a housekeeper who cleaned the furniture with that stuff, so any lemon-heavy fragrance is going to impart that impression on me.

This does not smell as complicated as all of the notes listed...AND...why for goodness sake...is vetiver not listed as one of the notes??? I own a vial of pure vetiver oil and I do smell it in this cologne so it's got to be in there...right? If not, that would be like naming a fragrance "Violet" and having it consist only of rose, citrus and amber. Well, pardon my confusion as I get back to the review. I guess it's obvious that I'm a lady but I just wanted to point that out to let it be known that I do find this pleasant on lady skin. It's very light,very refreshing yet fleeting but while it's there it's an unobtrusive, earthy way to smell. I get a little citrus upfront and a lot of fir...maybe a tad of lavender but that's about it. After a couple minutes I smell more cedar and something beeswaxy...I was a little thrown by that but I liked it and wished it would stay longer. I think maybe it was the carnation mixing with the Tonka,Amber and Neroli but I could just be making that up. For whatever reason, that phase passes pretty quickly and what I'm left with is just light citrus and grassy vetiver. It's pretty darn hot today, I'll be curious to try this in colder weather to see if that woodsy/beeswaxy part I like holds to my skin better.

It is indeed tragic that the RE-ISSUE has been discontinued. It is indeed light, an eau floral; except that is in truth an eau de bois. It is not SUPPOSED to last, it is a refreshing spritz, something to be applied and reapplied as a freshner for the spirit and the body on a hot and heavy day. My (now ex) husband brought it back for me from NYC a couple of years ago. When I saw it, I thought "oh my, my LEAST favourtie of all vetivers..." Boy, was I wrong! The now vanished re-issue was so much like the OLD Guerlain Vetiver, I couldn't beleive it! It was just a tad lighter, freash, more user friendly here in the swamp the is Houston, Tex-ASS. (hey, I'm from here, I can say that-the rest of ya'll can go back where you came from!) but I digress. I fear that I over used this delight during the summers, spritzing liberally; making myself feel comfortable, dry in skin and air; and fresh, not overly scented; not going to offend anyone by wearing some horrid heavy fragrance in 90+ degree temperatures and 95-98% humidity. Bring it back R& G!! Save a Texas girl!!

Cacharel Pour l'Homme cologne, that would mean basically bergamot, lavender, nutmeg, fir and oakmoss; with a duration of 4 to 6 hours. I've struggled to find the vetiver but it's a nice traditional fougere nonetheless, and a cheaper alternative to vintage Cacharel (although it's discontinued). Again, vetiver fans should look elsewhere IMHO. ----------------------------------------------- Cacharel Pour l'Homme en formato colonia, lo que significaría básicamente bergamota, lavanda, nuez moscada, abeto y musgo de roble; con una duración de 4 a 6 horas. Tengo dificultades para encontrar la nota de vetiver pero a pesar de esto es un buen fougere tradicional y una alternativa más barata que el Cacharel vintage (aunque está descontinuado). Una vez más, los fanáticos del vetiver deberían buscar en otro lado en mi humilde opinión. 6,5/10

I'm afraid I have to agree with most of the previous postings on this R&G Vetyver. It's a bust! I bought what looked like a great bargain and turned out to be lackluster and boring. The bottle and label design are great. But what's inside is not much. I used the R&G Vetyver soap for years before the fools discontinued it. I thought this would be as lush and gorgeous as the soap. Nope! No sillage whatsoever. A previous post said that this smelled like wet tobacco, true.

I don't think the above pyramid is for this fragrance.Not to mention that for a Vetyver based fragrance this pyramid reflects no Vetyver note, or notes. At any rate this is a simple composition, not terribly long lasting. In fact I view this as more of a Citrus fragrance supported by a light transparent note of Vetyver, and possessing a light woody Drydown. A pleasant summer refresher, nothing more, and nothing less.

Maybe the reissued eau fraiche version is the problem! I have the old EDC version as shown in the fragrantica profile image and it is great. Zesty citrus and dry vetiver with fir plus a good performance for a EDC.

Another piece of fragrantica genius. You can't vote for vetiver as an ingredient. Doesn't this call the whole reviews process on here into question?

I have the vetyver soap from roger et gallet and i imagine a classy french man wearing a pocket handkerchief impregnated with this substance.

As of January 2025, this is available at Fragrancebuy.ca Will review when I receive it, but wanted all to know.

Yeah, the soap was TDF. Shame it's been D/C'd.
