Tabac Vert

I'm on my second day of testing Rogue Perfumery products. Tabac Vert (Green Tobacco) is an exceptionally beautiful and wearable perfume - however it is by no means purely 'masculine'. In fact, it's perfectly unisex, even leaning feminine (we'll get to that). I have several tobacco fragrances (Diptyque Volutes EDP, Jacques Zolty Cubata, and a decant of TF Tobacco Vanille [old formula]). In comparison to them, Tabac Vert is very different from Tobacco Vanille (because it is neither sweet nor sticky), but also from Cubata on the other end of the spectrum - namely, Cubata features a very strong, raw and realistic scent of dried tobacco leaves, while Tabac Vert is much milder. So, this brings us to Volutes, and I'd say that Tabac Vert does resemble Volutes, because the scent of tobacco leaves is paired with powdery flowers and sweet spices. I would even go as far as to say that in Tabac Vert carnation and rose actually emerge as stronger notes than tobacco and oakmoss, especially because they are perfectly aided by amber and spices. At some point I was even reminded of Rochas Tocade! The point that I'm trying to make is that one should never take for granted marketing blurbs and gender tags. I'd be perfectly happy to wear Tabac Vert on a daily basis, and I'd never label it as a purely masculine scent. I'd also classify it as a green powdery floral, and not as a woody chypre. As to its performance on my skin, the initial projection is strong, but soon it settles into a beautiful intimate scent. It lasts about 6 hours, which is okay, given its reasonable price and the lack of synthetic gunk that would have resulted in longer duration.

The tobacco note is right there at the opening and it is a brilliant mimicking a Cuban cigar like a montcristo #2 habana. The real deal and not some cheap knock off you bought at an overseas bizarre market. Ummm Nectar of the God's. fresh fragrances like this one with all natural lusciousness . In the mid the tobacco steps back and the rose comes more to the foreIgront with a touch of moss .I am in love with this! A Chypre that lends itself more to the masculine side without over doing it on the addition of floral notes. Manny Cross has assured us with his blending techniques that he intends to orchestrate the notes in such a way as to carry us along on a mesmerizing journey in which each part melds so well into the next like a theme and development likened to a work of olfactory excellence. A Luscious tobacco, woody, floral symphony where each note and theme builds to a crescendo within the structure without being out of balance until the journey subsides and the movement decrescendo's into a beautiful finale of amber residue with sandalwood .This is possibly my favorite fragrance from Rogue and it is a completely versatile fragrance blind buy worthy. I hope others find the same happiness from this fragrance that I do. 10/10 for me

This is an absolutely beautifully composed fragrance. I don't know if it's actually meant to be for men or not, but when considering the conventional ideas of fragrances that are "feminine" or "masculine" I find it more feminine due to its powderiness and floralcy. It smells vintage-inspired and not dated whatsoever. I say "vintage-inspired" because it doesn't smell vintage. It's it's own creation, entirely modern, but with a twinkle of vintage, if that makes any sense? I don't feel this belongs in the "modern-vintage" category because fragrances in that category seem like they are deliberately trying to smell vintage or wish to take the place of vintages. I get a marvelously supple, powdery tobacco and warm, springy oakmoss at first. The florals here seem well-blended because I can't pinpoint them, but they add up to a scent that is so delicate and innocent, becoming more prominent in the drydown. Tabac Vert is very naturalistic, taking me to the outdoors. At the same time it's also wonderfully refined. I picture a very sweet, lady-like young woman who likes to read books in trees. It's a free-spirited and intellectual fragrance. This is my absolute favorite from Rogue.

I wanted to write a second review of this because I bought a full bottle in the fall; I bought the 30 ml., and I wish I had bought the 60 ml. because I'm running through this one fast. This is unlike just about any tobacco fragrance I've ever bought in that the tobacco is unsweetened and comes across when blended with all the oakmoss as very vegetal (it must be a very green tobacco), and also combines so beautifully with the carnation and the rose. This comes across as a very distinguished and dashing 40s masculine fragrance, and the evocations this brings of Chandler's Philip Marlowe and of Humphrey Bogart in his more dashing roles (one of which of course was Marlowe) seem very apt. I am a huge fan of green chypres, but this one leans more masculine than many of my other favorites, including Cabochard and Dryad: this is of course not to say a woman could not wear this beautifully (she would come across as a Bacall rather than a Bogart).

Now this is a scent I could imagine Humphrey Bogart would have worn in that movie Casablanca. It has a charming enigmatic old world sophistication vibe. Just like you have walked out of a classy barbershop in the 1940's. It opens up with a mentholated bergamot which is soon followed by oakmoss and a slightly honeyed green tobacco. As time moves towards the heart the florals appear right on cue adding a sensual depth to the green moss and tobacco. As we move towards the base after many hours, cedar and sandalwood become more apparent. All these soft spicy notes are wrapped up in a lovely shaving cream and slight talc accord. And this is the most complex one I have smelled from Rogue. The quality of the ingredients are most impressive and this smells very lovely and is easy to wear. If you are tired of modern synthetic shallow chemical fragrances and want to smell like a refined old school gentlemen then this is your scent. Wonderful!
