A Goodnight Kiss

To simplify it, A Goodnight Kiss is a classic style powdery floral aldehyde. But nothing about this fragrance can be simple, not for me at least. For starters, the way I came about owning it may make me a bit biased and emotional. Second, I know this was a fragrance made to recreate the scent of Roja's mother as she kissed him goodnight, and she is resting in peace. So, there is nothing simple about it. But it does smell exactly like a woman, a prim motherly lady, and how she would smell in close proximity. Her floral perfume, her powder, her lipstick and the natural human smell of musk we all get toward the end of the day. This is the smell of a goodnight kiss. A sweet kiss, a loving kiss, a gentle kiss. The meaningful kind. It is the smell of love. The iris is gentle and glorious, the powder is a very realistic rice powder scent. If you have ever worn rice powder, it's unmistakable. There is prominent ambergris that gives it warmth, it's never too floral, there is a human musky quality to it. Everything about this fragrance is human. So, it makes it a bit emotional to wear it. For me at least. Roja has spoken to me about his mother and I know how much he loved her. So, that may be adding the emotional factor for those of us who he has shared this with. Or if you have read about his love for her. It smells like a mother's kiss. It is elegant, it's understated, it's classic and it's very refined. It's comforting and I feel a range of emotions wearing it, for obvious reasons. And it is expensive. Very expensive. And I'm not going to write this review and ignore the elephant in the room. The price of the fragrance is extraordinary. It's not something I could even normally own. But it wasn't created for me. It was created for people who CAN afford it. And whether we like it or not, those people exist. Should anyone spend this much on perfume? Who am I to judge. I sit with $200 fragrances acting as if that is "normal" while there are people trying to figure out how they will buy a sandwich today. My normal is not someone else's normal. And I can not sit back in judgement of the cost someone else spends on a bottle of perfume while I have a collection that most people would see as excessive as many will see the price of this fragrance. So....what is "acceptable"? $800? $500? $250? $100? $50? To the man with no shoes, $50 would seem like something for a king. For a king, $1,750.00 seems perfectly reasonable. What I can say is this. For the last 3 days I have felt like a princess wearing this. I have felt special. There is no price to place on that feeling. And if owning luxurious fragrances like this gives someone that feeling, and they can afford it or they are willing to pay it so they can have such a feeling, who am I to judge? While I judge them, the man with no shoes is judging me. A Goodnight Kiss is a captivating fragrance. And it smells like powder, it smells like flowers, it smells like soft leather, it smells like musk....and it smells like love, generosity, nostalgia, beauty and forgiveness. It smells like a gift. And it smells like a memory. And there is no price on those things.

A Goodnight Kiss embodies the sparkling effervescence of the most touching story Roja Dove has to offer, a distinctly profound and personal story bringing his most treasured memories to life. This scent aims to recreate the memory of Roja’s mother coming to give him a kiss goodnight before going out to a party when he was a small child - he describes her smart clothes, powdered makeup and expensive perfume awakening his attachment to people and scent. This does not aim to recreate exactly what his mother smelled like, instead envisioning what the memory itself embodies so that each and every one of us can hopefully connect with the story. It opens initially very bright yet thick and heavy with copious amounts of powdery orris and violet - harking back to the glory days of vintage floral perfumes. Quite quickly this settles and becomes much softer, the aldehydes and array of gentle florals mingling beautifully to create something incredibly delicate and sensual. The orris and the violet remain a constant in the profile, making up the bulk of the scent to my nose. The website states a custom-made Rice Powder Accord was created for this scent to evoke the feeling of vintage cosmetics and makeup powder - which it most certainly does achieve. There’s also an ever so gentle muskiness about it, just vague synthetic musks atop a gentle leather accord give the fragrance this subtle whisper of filth - conveying what the evening ahead might bring. As this glorious perfume settles on the skin, it simplifies. It turns into what can only be described as Dove soap from the heavens - it has that incredibly old school vintage soapy feel, something that awakens a memory of washing your hands at your grandmother’s house. This scent is the epitome of clean, yet with endless amounts of class, wealth and elegance. Is it worth £1,250? No of course it isn’t, no perfume should cost that much. However, that doesn’t take away from the beautiful story this scent tells on your skin, and the fact that this is by far one of the best florals I have ever had the privilege of smelling. I managed to secure a low partial bottle of this and will treasure it forever.

This is a truly gorgeous fragrance. Nostalgia in a bottle! It's bright, warm. Intriguing, yet soft and demure. Simple in its subject matter (powder), but complex in its delivery. Masterfully blended. Roja really knew what he was doing with this one. I like to wear this either for a decadent night out, or luxuriating in a bath before bedtime. It makes me feel like a 1950s movie star. It's not the type of scent most are used to in this day and age, but if you can put aside the notion of powdery perfume being too mature ("grandma") then you will appreciate it more. To me it’s just comforting. And, the sheer performance. This is a beast!! AGK has a depth that is long-lasting well into the next day and retains 100% of its integrity. It doesn’t latch on to one specific note- it is simply itself. Yet, it is not overpowering at all. The one drawback... the price is outrageous. I wish it came in a 50ml size and a small 30ml. Clearly this is not geared towards the average consumer, and they want you to go big or go home. I don’t necessarily agree with that approach, but it is what it is. Price notwithstanding, this is one of my absolute favorites and a truly evocative and emotional experience. Just sad that it is so exorbitant expensive.

Well, I have a new unicorn with a $1,750 price tag. I spritzed this on recently, and my eyes rolled deeply into the back of my head. It is a heavenly, orris-laden cloud on which I want to rest my head. It develops over time, as I got something intensely animalic on my skin after about ten minutes. It smelled like civet, and I hope it's synthetic as the company told me they don't use natural civet (and they shouldn't!). I noticed some soft rose, but apart from orris, rose and civet, I could not really dissect the fragrance. I usually don't like heliotrope, so if there is any here, it was (obviously) not bothersome to me. In any case, I felt as though I might as well hand over my credit card because nothing, I repeat, nothing will ever smell this good again. Instead of spending $200 here, $100 there, I might as well just spend the $1800 and not buy anything else for the next few years. <----and good luck to me with that resolution! Update: I have a full bottle now!! :D

WOW. A Goodnight Kiss by Roja Parfums is an exceptionally great fragrance. I would call it a true masterpiece. I expect nothing less from the master perfumer himself; Mr Roja Dove. This is a part of his premium Haute Luxe collection and I can see why. A Goodnight Kiss is a powdery iris bomb that smells so elegant and classy. This is easily one of the greatest fragrances on the market and easily THE GREATEST powdery fragrance. The only negative I have is the price. I understand that it is a huge asking price. However, if you have the money or just absolutely love this fragrance, I would highly recommend. This is simply a 10/10.

@chanka - It smells like civet to me—that’s just my personal opinion. I’m not talking about any pyramids anywhere. As a side note folks might be shocked how many perfumers absolutely still use natural civet and castoreum in their fragrances but never mention it publicly. Pyramids are just subjective tools to help us understand what we have the potential to smell in a fragrance, they are by no means a list of ingredients.

The listed note doesn't match the official one. Anyone could tell of it's a mistake or this has been reformulated? For me this is straight forward aldehydic carnation scent, orris and violet come a little later. On my skin it’s not powdery, just lipsticky. I expected more softness, but it's stays quite flowery. If there is musk, flowers cover them. Just a hint of dirtyness, leathery, makes it interesting.

best iris perfume for me one of the perfumes that Roja has done the best job on ,for me it is a unisex scent It suits men too (my opinion)

Iris, old and refined. And the inside of her expensive leather purse. This stuff is feminine old-money. Quality!

Vintage scent profile that sums up classy chypre / powdery note

My most favourite fragrance in the world ever.

this is a very powder earthy perfume! on my skin with the first spray is all about musk! Intense powder musk, after no more than 10' the smell starts changing to a more earthy , soily kind of smell which i think it is the combination of ambergris and orris root . The perfume is changing again adding to this earthy tones some of the ylang ylang's creaminess and this is where the transformation changes on my skin. After 30' this is how i smell , people around me says i smell amazing and they do smell the musk powder note all the time. For me it is a delicate beautiful fragrance which i really like but not the signature perfume for me (and thank God cause the price is crazy!) also the powder and the ambergris after a while turn heavy for my nose! If you like the musk note , this fragrance is for you. Update: under very warm tempertures the smell doesnt change, it smells musκ all the way and for hours! Yesterday i was wearing it for 7hs and the sillage was undiminished!

A pink-floral, chypre-like scent with a distinctly nostalgic feel. I know a true chypre needs a mossy character in the base; even if that isn’t really present here, category-wise it still leans toward a floral chypre for me. It opens with aldehydes, then blooms into a thousand flowers. In my mind the color is pink: rose, violet, and carnation to the fore; and the bouquet evokes a soft, dusty pink hue. Later it oscillates between powder and floral. It’s more ballroom than good-night kiss. There’s a leather nuance, too. The price is excessively high, in my view, largely because it doesn’t feel truly unique. Even though there’s a whole world inside it (so many notes) it keeps reminding me of other vintages, yet I can’t quite pin down what. Tag(s): nostalgic, pink floral, expensive, chypre-like

How do I describe this? Here... I’ll keep it short. It’s 2043 and climate change has gotten horrible. You’re outside, and the temp has reached 121 degrees Fahrenheit (49.5 C). You’re in a bit of a haze due to dehydration, and you look down to see the soles of your shoes melting off and fusing into the gravel. You also notice a half-used stick of lipstick melting in the sun not far from where your shoes are. It’s rubbery, it’s harshly dry and chalky, and it’s weirdly addictive. Stupid price though

I love Roja's work, yet this one isn't the best I've tried from the house. Like a mix of Chanel N°5 Mitsouko and Iris Poudre by Frederic Malle. It smells amazing, leaning feminine, other than that, nothing groundbreaking here. Very vintage, you need to like that style of fragrances to really enjoy this one.

Powdery Perfume retails at $ 1,750 for 100ml Worth it or not, Its up to your bank account to decide. It a beautiful perfume with an amazing stay power that I would consider buying if it came in 30ml size.

While I very much enjoy this scent profile I don't like wearing this particular one. I don't know why. I have a travel size and I'm contemplating decluttering it. 🤔

Lovely powdery scent, but it feels a bit vintage — elegant, yet old-fashioned.

While I’m usually on board with everything Roja releases, AGK leaves me wanting more than just a photorealistic, powdery iris at this price point. The white florals here are slightly indolic but thankfully never cross into medicinal territory. It's a mature classic-style fragrance. I was really hoping for that intimate, "your skin but better" warmth from the ambergris, but it ultimately feels like a vanity note here. This fragrance takes its time to bloom; by the ten-minute mark, the initial florals mellow out to reveal a truly beautiful floral musk. I just wish my nose could separate the citrus, neroli, and peach—they feel a bit muddled in the mix. I’ll give this a full day's wear test before my final wrap-up.

A rather mediocre vintage-style composition. The opening reveals aldehydes, giving it a distinctly old-fashioned start. Powdery white florals appear early on, mainly orange blossom and jasmine, with a restrained level of sweetness. After a few minutes, iris and rose emerge, softening the powdery texture and making the scent feel more subdued. The heart remains a layered blend of florals and powder, with a fairly stable structure. In the drydown, musk and woods take over. Overall the fragrance sits in the space between powdery and white floral. It stays close to the skin, with a clean line, but it doesn’t offer anything particularly distinctive.

Oh Powder Queen of all powders! Plus aldehydes, musk and orris. I don't smell anything else. It's a first one from Roja Perfumes for me, and even though I love the story behind it, Goodnight Kiss is a pass for me. I can't wait, however, to try more of this brand!!

This reminded me of a Xerjoff scent. Quite powdery, but the dry down has something familiar.

It smells weird. I don’t like it. It a heliotrope bomb done terribly. I’m so glad I only bought the travel size. I’m gonna decant and sell it.

First, this IS a beautiful, soft, powdery perfume. Rice powder? Yes. Florals? Yes. Lipstick? Yes. I can certainly smell this as a memory of a lovely mother's goodnight kiss, which apparently inspired this fragrance. However. After the opening, it smells a lot to me like baby powder. Specifically, J&J Baby Powder. I happen to like babies and baby powder very much, but I'm not going to spend several hundred dollars to smell that way myself. Also, on my skin, it didn't last as long as I expected, given how concentrated Roja Dove's fragrances usually are, though the base notes are still detectable on my skin after 4 hours. J&J Baby Powder is supposed to include notes of citrus, vanilla, rose and white musk, all of which are present in A Goodnight Kiss. Talcum powder traditionally has scent notes of orris root, also here. More detail from the blog Glass Petal Smoke: "In an article titled "Ah, There's Nothing Like New Baby Smell" New York Times science reporter Douglas Quenqua asked me to describe the smell of baby products. I offered the following olfactory descriptors; powdery (dry, chalk-like, violet), aldehydic (soapy, fresh, citrus), lactonic (milk-like, creamy), fruity (apple), floral (rose, violet, orange blossom), vanillic (woody, balsamic, sweet), and musky (clean, fresh and sweet). Two types of musk commonly used in baby products are galaxolide and ethylene brassylate. Both musks, with their superhero-like names, support the structure of a fragrance formula and are the last notes to evaporate on skin. They are also featured in most luxury perfume formulas which make them familiar strangers when they migrate from fine fragrance to functional fragrance." My conclusion? Lovely, soft fragrance; definitely reminiscent of mothers and babies; much too expensive.

A cleverly mastered fragrance telling a story by the interplay of scents through the progression of the fragrance. First there is the entrance which is strong and bright, where the aldehydes produce a soapy citrous violet mix, with the kiss having a lipstick soft leather and powder appeal. Then the touch of the mothers cheek onto your skin which leaves a refined, softness with a powdery musk combination and a lighter floral blend in the background. Then comes the dance of florals, as though the mother is dancing as she moves away which throws varying degrees of floral fragrances in tune with her movements, and so varying prominences of rose, ylang, violet, carnation and iris come into play while there remains a gentle and well blended florals and soft powder in the background. This is followed by a calmer phase of a mellowed musky soft powder scent, with the leather woods and spice gently coming into the background providing depth. This is followed by a varying play of softer aldehydes, and florals which are again delicately and gently blended into the background, as though one is reliving the memory of her dance. This is followed by a more tender phase of well blended soothing softness in the combination of woods, amber, spice, musk, and powder, all very smooth, silky, creamy and delicately balanced as though one is slowly drifting off to sleep. A true masterpiece.

Maybe I'm a weirdo but the whole concept of mother and baby/baby's head really icks me out for some reason. Makes me not want to try it. First off, I'm not trying to smell like a baby...babies don't smell that great in all honesty (often they smell pretty terrible actually) and I'm an adult, the idea of smelling like a baby is just...disconcerting. I don't want a perfume that makes me think of nursing...the whole concept is decidedly creepy and unsexy. Not that there's anything wrong with nursing or babies, they just don't belong in the arena of perfume, which to me spans a fairly wide array of concepts/feelings that I enjoy (sexy, sensual, powerful, or sweet and delicious, or botanical and naturalistic, but never, ever infantile. Just no.) and babies and all things related are decidedly NOT a concept/feeling I want to experience from a perfume. Imo, anyway. Then agaun I'm not very maternal, except maybe to my pets, and the idea of motherhood doesn't excite me one bit or really inspire any positive feelings. I'm happy with my animals lol

I finally had the pleasure to test this perfume in store. It is truly a finely crafted orris centric perfume.. It reminds me of Iris Silver Mist without the carrot note. I am not going to dissect all the notes as many well written reviews have covered that part. Orris root is described as the scent of baby's head. It totally fits the analogy of mother and baby.. For me, this is like an English mother while La Via del Profumo's Il Giglio di Firenze (not in our database) an Italian mom. Both of them are well bought up. One has an aristocrat air and a little reserved while the other is more homey... Iris Silver Mist is on the cold side of the spectrum and gives a metallic vibe.. Is it worth the price tag? Orris butter currently retails at US$24 per gram which is not even the Florentine white orris butter (the gold standard!)

@Kitt3nReturns Not certain where you read that the inspiration what an infant. Roger created this perfume from a memory of his mother. She was heading out to a cocktail party and went in his room to give him a goodnight kiss before her departure. Knowing this, the inspiration would be a stylish mature lady heading out for the evening, leaving behind her a delicate scent in the air. Scents are very personal for many reasons, our unique skin chemistry can alter a fragrance drastically. 3 women in my family tried the same scent on their arm and from the first application to the late evening it smelled like 3 different fragrances. Powdery dominent perfumes are not what I prefer but I can certainly appreciate those creations that have a complexity and elegant finish.

Roja Dove aka Roger Bird expressed his sentiment with this fragrance as one of his most personal. One of his fondest memories was of his mother being dressed to go out at night and going to him while he was in bed for a goodnight kiss before she left. He stated she looked like an ethereal angel and it was those moments which sparked his love of perfume because he would remember the way she smelled before she went out. I'd imagine the strong smell of makeup from the 50's and 60's along with her perfume were inspirations for this scent, along with the soft memories of maternal love. I love the sentiment and inspiration behind this scent from one of our modern master perfumers.

I didn’t expect to like this fragrance as it is very feminine,powdery and has a very vintage feeling but surprisingly, I saw myself sniffing it again and again. The fragrance has a very powdery heliotrope, if you smelled fragrances like L’Eau d'Hiver or other powdery heliotrope fragrances you will know what I mean. In addition, there are some other floral notes in the heart (ylang ylang and jasmine stand out) and a bright aldehydic opening that transforms me to the 1920s. However, there’s something very addictive in the drydown coming from the sweet cold orris, vanilla, warm ambergris paired with musk that a give a feeling of sophistication and innocence.

I absolutely love the fragrance hate the outrageous price. Ik naturals being used and iris is expensive raw material but still this price is not justified Now regardless the price scent is phenomenal clean powdery bright aldehydic white florals, buttery iris light airy vanilla , it has everything that I already love , I also like the story behind the fragrance and it’s very well captured in the fragrance It’s giving 80s rich elite vibe which doesn’t seem dated at all. Still elite and relevant . Like vintage cars have a special place it’s that for a perfume Smells 10/10 but 9/10 for that price Quite surprised by the longevity it lasted more than a week

Smells like a box of makeup. Very lipsticky and foundation sort of vibe. That is what Roja is going for in here. Perfectly done for what it wanted to portray. Very nice iris, heliotrope, powdery fragrance which will suit well on a classy mature lady. Smells expensive and is high quality but a bit expensive for what it offers. Nevertheless, the fragrance is well made and can be signature scent worthy.

Just got a 7.5 ml decant of this with candy aoud, wow...this is pretty good. $1700? maybe not but this might be the best powdery fragrance I have ever smelled. A little linear, but very high quality. Just powder, soft. Unisex, that "old lady" vibe is really maybe only like the first 5 seconds, but after it is very unisex, I don't see how anyone could bash this fragrance.

This just doesn’t work on me. I feel like it ages me about 30 years. No thanks. I don’t really get baby powder, I get a very old fashioned & somewhat indolic smell. I can’t imagine many people blind buying at this price (even the 7.5 ml) but do test this one first. My sample (directly from Roja) is from 2015 so it may have been reformulated since then.

Very well blended, smells good, but to be honest, it's just a heliotrope bomb that somehow combined with other notes altogether the final result smells like fresh LILAC. I can see it as a beautiful scent for some (probably more women) but it certainly feels like Roja's personal experiment and no way in hell would be worth the exorbitant asking price.

Rich and expensive smelling. Very potent women's perfume which I mainly get peach, ylang, jasmine, iris, heliotrope, and a soapy clean neroli. Not as much iris as I'd imagined there would be. A really gorgeous and potent scent that would be incredible on a woman. Could be worn casual or for business. Does not smell old or dated imo.

@avepatfum there is not mentioned civet not here not on their website Roja doesn’t target people who need to sacrifice something else to buy it.. for example rent 😁.. he targets people like arab oil mandates who doesn’t care to pay for something 5x more than its value Even if this cap is real amethyst the price is ridiculous

Truly incredible fragrance which takes the familiar femininity and amps it up almost past the point of conceivability. Only very briefly smelled this in a shop just out of curiosity, but in that split second, I could recognize the scent equivalent of softness, gentleness, kindness... authority.

@Aveperfume, i also get an animalic note on the top when i spray this. Not sure what it is, but its definietly there. That being said, this is a wonderful powdery aldehidic floral perfume that lasts a long time. If you are a fan of aldehydes and orris, this is a must sample.

Very beautiful scent. Likely not worth the massive price tag but would pick up for 7-800. I love heliotrope and would love to smell this on a woman. Beautiful bottle as well. This is absolute purple flower paradise. Suprised how quickly this became a favorite Roja.

Beautiful powdery flower bomb could only ever imagine wearing it after a bath at home ... so probably won’t be investing in a full bottle anytime soon - but will cherish my vial as part of the luxury sample set !

Quality is clear here but this one wasn't too enjoyable for me but worth a try. I found it far too powdery and feminine almost baby powder, which I suppose absolutely nails the creative direction however.

I swear to God that this is a serious baby powder bomb 💣 I just can’t see myself ever wearing it anywhere. Smells to grandmotherly for me to ever pull this sucker off. Sorry Roja but this is a no for me.

Are they out of their, um, MIND! Not a perfume on earth is worth this. It's perfume, for heaven's sake. Argh, oops! Sorry. I almost fell off the couch. Back to searching some actually affordable 'fumes.

It’s a no go for me. All I smell is baby powder. I’ll just get some Johnson & Johnson baby powder if I want to smell like this. 🤷🏾♂️
