Chypré Extraordinaire

So I've tried Diaghilev, Haute Luxe and this (Chypre Extraordinaire) by Roja so far. Given the price and list of notes, I was sure I wouldn't be much impressed... And upon first whiff, I almost agreed-- I wasn't blown away but it was definitely better than I expected. However after wearing it about an hour, I was becoming more intrigued. After several hours I was slightly unimpressed with the performance (specifically the projection/longevity, especially when compared to Diaghilev), but couldn't wait to go home and try it again... Which I did... For several days in a row... I don't want to like this seemingly dull release from Roja Dove but, if I'm being honest, I REALLY like it. The plum note is what I get most for the first hour (swirled with some great aldehydes remiscent if Calèche from Hermès) followed by the best jasmine money can buy (damn well better be) touched with some plum and black currant, and civet.. Of course throughout hours of wear you'll be able to pick out the heliotrope, some leather and gorgeous orris and that vanilla will still be on your skin the next morning... Is it worth the money? I don't know and that's not my business. Is a business class seat round trip from New York to Hong Kong worth $5000 more than the coach seat? Depends on what you want I guess... You can hate him and his pricing and never wear his fragrances, and I can nod while I listen to the completely understandable complaint. But I can also understand buying something this expensive for yourself that you might wear once a month (or even less) because it gives you some joy and makes you smile. I'm a teacher and this is not in my price range but I'm going to buy a bottle because I get enough joy from it to make me forgo a few pricy dinners or what have you to wear this out for the next couple of years. I'm sure the raw materials to create this are very expensive. I'm also sure that the price of those materials are not even close to what this is priced at point of sale. At the end of the day, the price tag is very personal and there's no point in my complaining about it... It's definitely overpriced. I'll wear it sparingly and enjoy every moment of it. I will mention the projection/longevity is not as good as it should be, as both Diaghilev and Haute Luxe push and last much longer. Also, I forgot who mentioned it on this site but if you want something in the Chypre family with perfect Jasmine and REAL oakmoss that lasts for more than a day (no joke) please please try Chypre Siam by Rogue.. I am on my second full size bottle and it is honestly one of the best fragrances ever. And while he COULD charge double or even more for it, he doesn't. Keep smiling everyone and be safe.

I have some scents - like a pair- which are perfect to wear for couples. ❤️ This is the first pair. The best classical timeless Chypres inspired by vintage Mitsouko! ✨ If you want to buy a totally new bottle and the budget is not limited I highly recommend to try these ones before buying a new version of Mitsouko or Rochas Femme. Those are nice as well but these are so incredible amazing ones with extraordinary quality! The classy well blended complexity which is hard to find. ROJA PARFUMS 🖤 DIAGHILEV Very strong and majestic, deep and rich blend, a challenging to wear for many. This one definitely needs the right kind of clothes, otherwise you look and smell totally ridiculous. Yet, I see in my eyes a handsome man after a bath in Versace bathrobe. 🤩 Sharp and spicy, leathery and musky, mossy with a gentle touch of animalics - everything in this scent is heavy. So GORGEOUS! Main notes: - Lemon, Bergamot, Lime, Orange, Tarragon - Jasmin de Grasse, Tuberose, Heliotrope, Violet, Blackcurrant Buds, Peach - Patchouli, Oakmoss, Benzoin, Labdanum, Leather 💜 CHYPRÉ EXTRAORDINAIRE Soft and fruity, sophisticated and subtle, very refined yet addictive and complex beautiful scent. This is brighter and lighter (not weak) than Diaghilev and a little bit sweet. This is like a sun and Diaghilev is like a moon. This is like a queen and Diaghilev is like a king. There is amazing mossy base with Civet and Musk but animalic vibe is absence. Totally in love with this delicate yet well projecting scent. Definitely a year around scent for me. Chypré Extraordinaire is a revolutionary perfume. Due to constantly changing IFRA regulations and limitations on oakmoss, Roja set out to create the world’s first chypré without the use of its iconic and definitive note. He has stated before that this was the hardest fragrance he’s ever had to make and at many times was close to giving up, but eventually he cracked it. Chypré Extraordinaire initially opens with refreshing bergamot and aldehydes before developing an addictively sweet and fruity combination of peach and plum, which goes on to live throughout the duration of the scent. From here a soft and delicate heart of powdery florals emerges, namely ylang, tuberose, orris and rose. As it settles on the skin, Roja’s revolutionary moss accord presents itself - it’s incredible to think this doesn’t contain any oakmoss when your nose is certain that it does. There’s a gentle and slightly animalic hint of civet and cassis but this is very subtle, alongside the other two classic chypré notes - patchouli and labdanum. Roja Dove created a spectacle with this release and it truly does live up to its name of being extraordinary. He revolutionised the way chyprés can be made and paved the way preparing for the likely demise of oakmoss usage in perfumery. This is such an addicting fragrance and smells beautiful in the warm spring and summer air.

this is the younger brother/sister to diaghilev of the same house, this is a more powdery, brighter and less edgy take than diaghilev, i personally prefer this slightly more but both are amazing chypres. both have good performance and the way the scent evolves on my skin blows me away. chypre extraordinaire starts off powdery and bright, then fruity, then floral, then woody, then mossy, then ... it evolves forever, which amazes me. this truly makes me feel special and it brings out the happy side of me. if you're trying to get into chypre scents done right, start with this or mitsouko then diaghilev then try the vintage ones out there. chypre extraordinaire is a great starter chypre for anyone really, the way roja balances each element in this scent is marvelous, nothing too weak nor overpowering, yet still being a complex profile. chypre extraordinaire really shines in the light heat, best worn in summer evenings/nights, spring, and fall. longevity is around 7-8 hours, and projetion is moderate/gentle, as with every other chypres as i think chypres are meant to be soft & elegant, not loud and obnoxious. but sadly, with all rojas, the price point is way up there and f**king insane, a bottle of this in singapore goes for around $1.3k and my 4-ml decant cost me $88 😭 but the scent is immaculate. overall, 10/10

Extraordinarily complex and unique. I have never smelled anything quite like it. Like a true chypre, it is difficult to pin-point exact individual notes. They all blend together into a scent cloud that smells good and expensive, but without any clearly definable scent structures. It is floral, but not a floral. It is fruity, but not a citrus. It is sweet, but not a gourmand. It is woody, ... you get it. It is a chypre. That's just what it is. It is exactly everything and nothing all at the same time. Never clearly discernable as anything, but is as present as you are. Think of how Dickens described the Ghost of Christmas Past and then try to imagine that as a fragrance. Fabulous masterpiece of perfumery that only comes with one criticism from me. As difficult as it is to define as a scent, it is also remarkably difficult to define a time and place to wear it. It seems out of place outside of only the most opulent of environments.

This is the best Animalic Floral scent you can find out there. The quality of this fragrance is just on a different level. starts of very very floral but at the same time very interesting and very earthy. The floral opening of course is accompanied with woody, animalic and powdery notes. It definitely is an aromatic scent. The floral is so realistic here and I have to say is the first floral fragrance that is very masculine. It has some balls in it. I love this. I can see a guy with over all black suit and tie with a small red rose in the little pocket or I can also see a a guy in a Miami type of a white suit without tie. As it dries down it gets a bit leathery, smoky and the animalic facet of it comes out more and it becomes even more masculine but you can still smell the aromatic floral notes in here. A gorgeous masterpiece as far as a beautiful masculine floral fragrance goes. 10/10 in all aspects.

Great one from the house of Roja Parfums. Before I tested it I thought this might be more of a classical chore with a slightly violet touch. When I smelled it, it was not quite like that. It was more of a fruity fragrance, wrapped in a soft chypre accord. For me this fragrance is perfectly unisex. if I had to decide, than more on the masculine side. It has a decent projection and longevity and a really nice bottle and packaging. Unfortunately this scent is part of the Prestige Collection. The price point is shocking with 990€/100ml. Roja Dove is the master of chypres, and this one is probably the second best from the house when it comes to dry fragrances. If I would be ready to spend a grand on a fragrance this would be a candidate. Again really nice fragrance, suitable for everyday for all seasons.

This is an absolutely glorious chypre. It is multifaceted, complex, powerful and incredibly smooth. Fruity and very floral, yet has that mossy, musky and slightly animalic sense underneath. In my opinion this is the brighter, more unisex counterpart to Diaghilev. I actually use this as my warm weather equivalent. Very very impressive performance too. Mine is an old bottle with dark juice, can't speak to the new ones. If you are debating on whether or not to try this, absolutely go for it. However, it is outrageously expensive.

I had the pleasure of testing this yesterday evening at Selfridges and I was struck by how much the top notes reminded me of Femme by Rochas, with a very expensive smelling rose note. The middle notes and dry down reminded me a lot of Choc de Cardin which was my go-to perfume in the late 70s. Make no mistake, this is imho a beautiful interpretation of a classic chypre fragrance with expensive ingredients. Nevertheless, despite being an elegant and beautiful chypre it is not in my opinion worth £1450 a bottle.

Just went to Harrods and smelt many fragrances this included alongside many others from different brands in terms of Roja, I came to try the oud collection, but that's not what stood out to me I thought I would like the oud as I usually do but this, Diaghilev and Haute Lux - Wow and a few hours later as I speak I can still smell them Haute lux is a bit pricey alongide this, well they all are but I think it's between Chypre Extrodinare and Diaghilev.

This is a must buy for all Chypré lovers. For me, fragrance isn't just about smell, it's about how it makes you feel. This fragrance makes me feel majestic. There's only ever been 2 fragrances that have made me feel majestic; Diaghilev and Chypré Extraordinaire. Chypré Extraordinaire is a true masterpiece. It's only right that a masterpiece like this was made by the grandmaster himself; Mr. Roja Dove. I give this 10/10.

This one stopped me in my tracks. Rich and decadent, complex and sophisticated. A swirling blend of floral, wood, incense and animalic notes. Wear this and you...will...get noticed. Pure indulgence. This is for the real connoisseur. If you get a full bottle, I would keep it in a safe! Your drink? Louis XIII de Remy Martin Grande Champagne Cognac

OH MAN OH MAN! The best fragrance my nose have been blessed to smell. Composition out of this world, smoothest blend of moss, fruits, aldehydes and creamy florals. Had to get this one signed by the Dove himself. I hope every soul will get the chance to try this. If you do not share this opinion, go argue with your dad. Love

I am a proud owner of this masterpiece. I won’t go on about how this smells, but the mixture of the dry Chypre facets with the fruits and citruses is second to none. Chypre Extraordinaire makes me feel a way that no other fragrances in my collection accomplish. It’s an absolute all-time masterpiece, in my opinion.

Love this scent so much. Its my signature scent in fact. This was the very first scent that made me fall in love w rojas creation in general and started to collect them. Floral, fruity chypre with all the goodness.

It's definitely a spectator. It's mixed like Mitosuko by Guerlain and Enlevement au Serail by MDCI. It's fruity chypre + indolic floral bomb + amber oriental scent. It's stunning.

Roja Chypre Extraordinaire opens beautifully. During the first hour, it is present, elegant, and unmistakably refined—I can clearly smell it, and it delivers exactly the kind of classic chypre sophistication I expected. However, even at this early stage, I begin questioning whether what I’m experiencing justifies the price point. By the second hour, the fragrance has already started to retreat. It is still detectable, but only in fleeting whiffs rather than as a confident, sustained presence. At around the four-hour mark, it is effectively gone on my skin. This is especially disappointing given the concentration, the brand’s reputation, and the expectation of longevity that comes with a fragrance in this tier. What makes this particularly frustrating is how long I had been infatuated with the idea of owning Chypre Extraordinaire. I fully expected to love it and had mentally committed to purchasing a full bottle. Wanting to be prudent, I ordered a decant first from Beverly Hills Perfumery. I was genuinely excited to try it and applied a generous 8–10 sprays around 8:30 a.m. The opening was lovely and lived up to its promise for the first hour. By the second hour, it was already fading, though I could still catch occasional traces. By 12:30 p.m., I could smell absolutely nothing. When I consider this experience in the context of my existing collection, the disappointment becomes more pronounced. I own full bottles of Diaghilev, Rochas Femme, Jubilation 25 Woman, and Killer Oud—fragrances that not only deliver complexity and character but also justify their presence through performance and emotional impact related to their costs. I also have several decants waiting in the wings, including Tiziana Terenzi Lyncis Extrait, Hermès Bel Ami, Cartier La Panthère Extrait (2020), Tabac Blond, Chypre Palatin, and Chypre-Siam. I am still hoping to encounter something that truly blows me away. That said, I am starting to suspect that I may already own my top two chypres. I haven’t forgotten Mitsouko—it remains a benchmark—but after wearing both decants of the edt and edp, I found myself preferring Diaghilev. In that context, Roja Chypre Extraordinaire, while undeniably beautiful in its opening, ultimately falls short for me. Given the price, the expectations, and my experience with other exceptional chypres, it simply does not deliver enough to warrant a full-bottle purchase.

Nice but not extraordinary. A very well-made classic chypre, very much like Diaghilev but not as exciting. Nice materials n' that, and a lovely structure and blend, but can't help thinking I've smelled it a hundred times before. Try Rogue Perfume's Chypre Siam for a proper exciting fragrance. Whisper it but it's got REAL OAKMOSS!!!! And it's one tenth of the price of this. As per usual, Roja has made this the old fashioned way by shoving as many notes in as possible. Full to bursting, and certainly very well done, but I couldn't really care less. Phew...several thousand pounds saved. 😂

A floral slightly leathery fragrance built around the DNA of A Goodnight Kiss. Obviously more complex and multi-faceted yet more subtle and soft in projection. Many facets of other ROJA creations also can be found in the mid to drydown such as the citrusy floral peachy aspects by Danger and Risqué from the Femme collections. Highest quality and luxurious classy chypré perfect for confident people that carries elegant and poise personality. A scent only exclusively preserved for close social encounter.

The composition of the perfume is out of this world, but it’s full of flowers and feels very feminine. Beautiful—otherworldly—but not for a man.

Plum, peach, oakmoss and civet. Discernable floral underpinning. Masterful blending.

2 sprays in my elbow and on first sniff, Its pretty powdery and floral. Kinda has a Diaghilev style but Diaghilev is darker and powerful and this is bright, fruity and floral. I was expecting it to be hardcore old school but it’s pretty toned down. Not what you'd expect from a chypre as it’s more aldehydes, fruits and flowers instead of green, dry and oak moss filled frags like Apex. Roja was apparently going for a well rounded chypre and I can say he has achieved it. It's very balanced from the beginning to the end. It’s also supposed to be intimate which would explain the performance i'm getting. It's projecting moderately and it’s light and airy. The longevity is good tho. I did not get much animalics in the opening but it's slightly there cause I really have to sniff it hard to pick up the civet. After 5-6 hours tho, more of the animalic tones come out more. Kinda got that barnyard scent in it. It’s pretty complex with how it changes. I know it's pricy and it may be worth it to you if you've tried it but not for me guys. With that price, I'd want Diaghilev performance but it's just too light on me. As usual with Roja's perfumes tho, your mileage may vary. So as always, decant first especially for this one.

Picked it at a perfume counter as the one I tried today. By the time I got home, about an hour later, all I can smell is the civet, oakmoss, and vanilla. The initial scent is beautiful....I did not realize the price when I tried it, I just knew it was the best smelling fragrance I had smelled in the store... a very artful chypre, which is hard to find nowadays. Unfortunately, due to the fact it dies so quickly on my skin, it would not even be worth a $100 price point for me. I had been on the fence, but today's experience convinced me my next perfume will be Pikovaya Dama, an equally gorgeous chypre, that lasts on my skin, and which costs a quarter of the price as this one. I am truly jealous of anybody whose skin this works on...gorgeous straight out of the bottle.

A complete money grabbing swindle of a scent, there is nothing that extraordinary in its composition to warrant its huge nearly $2000 price tag. The perfume opens with a whiff of aldehydes and citrus and moves to a firm floral middle before settling on a mossy powdery base. The heart and the base boast several ingredients but none that rare or precious to warrant the price tag. The perfume feels a bit overstuffed and has none of the charm or depth of the vintage female chypres. It leans clear feminine and has pronounced sillage, projection and good longevity. Get it if you have the $2000 to blow to own a ‘Roja Dove’ perfume. There are far better and lesser expensive options available from this house. Not impressed.

This is an aldehyde blast. Absolutely disgusting! I’m glad I only bought a 1 ml sample because this is some rancid stank.

I remember walking into ROJA Parfums back when I was in London in 2017 - this was more than 3 years ago; and so many feelings have appeared inside me. One of them was - ‘I will never own these perfumes. These will always be just a dream and nothing more.’ Fast forward 3 years and I have in my hands possibly my favorite scent I have ever put my nose on; Chypre Extraordinaire. I distinctly remember smelling this one and going completely speechless. This fragrance is the epitome of what I find beautiful in a perfume composition. This is what most definitely best describe my taste and my soul. Chypre Extraordinaire is - as its name suggests - a gorgeouc chypre. Meaning, it has a beautiful base and an all around detectable feeling of oakmoss and dry woody, mossy notes, as most chypres. This serves as a base and as an establishment to then create a scent that is in a way nods to a classic world and features an old charm; but also undeniable made new and modern with twists. A classic chypre made rich with tuberose, ylang ylang that ever so slightly makes this floral, tender and luscious; also added notes of peach and plum make it gorgeously sweet. Almost gourmand like- but you don’t get that overwhelming fruitiness because it is so well balanced. When it dries and settles down, a trail of lovely ambergris, amber, vanilla and aldehydes come to play that make this creation powdery but still very much heavy with all the other notes that I described. I applied 3 spritzes on myself in the morning and it still follows me around, and when I catch a whiff, I cannot help but to smell myself and smile. This fills me with so much joy. Joy because I finally get to apply what I find so incredibly gorgeous, and also joy because I have this feeling of accomplishment inside of me - something you dream of, something you focus your energies and thoughts on, and then, life will present ways for you to help achieve some of those goals. It is comforting to know that life will sort itself out and in the end, it will all be good. We will all be good. ♥️

What makes this an extraordinary chypre according to Roja Parfums is that Roja wanted to make an experiment to see if he could create a chypre without oakmoss. Tall order considering oakmoss is the essential ingridient in a proper chypre. You can find interviews on YT where he talks about this feat and how it was the toughest fragrence he ever created. Fun experiment... but not worth 2 grand. This doesnt move me like Diaghilev.. if i was going to drop this kind of coin i would just buy a backup bottle of Diaghilev.. as an enthusiast... this is a little boring. Nice chypre.. proper ... but if i just want a "nice" chypre i would just wear my mitsouku edp and vintage clock face edc bottle that combined cost me a little over 100 bucks. Not 2000 (!!) Is it well made? yes & i will say that just like the other haute luxe exclusives like roja haute luxe for example... these fragrences are growers in that it takes them a few hours to bloom .. dont judge it by spraying and smelling in there first few minutes there is development here (there better be for the first born and both kidneys roja is asking) but to me this leans fem & i would much rather wear my vintage bottle of must de cartier or estee lauder knowing or azuree parfum or even ma liberté or bandit if i wanted to whip out one of my female targeted fragrences before i ever thought i need to wear CE. In fact you could buy vintage bottles of all those iconic fragrences and not get close to 2Gs! All that being said if you are a woman and have 2000 bucks burning a hole in ur pocket or decide to pay for a bottle of chypre extraordinare instead of making your rent payment this month.. go for it. Want to start off by saying that I am not the biggest fan of Roja. But as a perfumer, I am always opened to trying different stuff and seeing what the fuss is all about. I feel like the marketing tactics are shady and the price is far too high for what these are. None the less, to each their own. I have received numerous samples and wanted to just give my honest opinion on them now that I have gotten to try em. Chypre Extraordinaire. Not bad, it is floral and woody with a fruity aspect. The aldehydes play into the florals more than as a top note. But all and all not a bad fragrance. Worth the $1,000+ price tag? I do not believe so. There are many other great soft chypres out there that are much more affordable and accessible. 6/10

I own several Roja perfumes and the house is one of my favorites, so I considered blind buying this one, but I'm glad I didn't. It's a beautiful perfume, but nothing groundbreaking, and it's one those Roja fragrances that gives a very vintage vibe, which some people might love - something about Ylang combined with orange blossom, and the musk, producing that slightly bitter, somewhat heady, classic quality.. I'm personally not a fan of certain older-style fragrances for that reason - i.e., when the aforementioned notes are very pronounced. I generally like Chypres, but this one I'm not crazy about.

A classic floral Chypre that really blown me away. this fragrance has some similarities to Diaghilev from the same house but CE has a brighter opening because of the aldehydes while Diaghilev has a bitter citrusy opening. While both have floral notes in the heart, CE is more floral and powdery with a prominent violet, heliotrope, tuberose, ylang-ylang and peach. The fragrance drydown to a mossy base consisting mainly of oakmoss with a hints of civet while the civet plays a more important role in Diaghilev as it is very prominent in the drydown on my skin.

This is Diaghilev toned down to a 6 with fruits instead of citrus and way less civet. It’s a friendlier take on the classic chypre while still making a statement that you’re bold, confident with an old school flare. I do find it to be modern and unique enough in our current state of perfumery being very safe, sporty, and mass appealing. Quality is what you expect from Roja Parfums. 8 out of 10 w great performance and versatility.

This is a fusion between Haute Luxe and Diaghilev You get that creamy , sweet resins feel of the Luxe and the Animalic , Leathery slightly woody feel from Diaghilev. Florals play impactful role with clear influence of sandalwood and musks combo With distinctive polished animalic background. I see it in the middle between H.Luxe & Diaghilev in terms of olfactive profile and perfectly unisex. Cheers

This is the better version of A Good Night Kiss. Better executed, more complex, more alluring. Fruity floral but green and quiet and calm like a gentleman. Perfectly unisex. Actually you would forget about all gender expectations when you smell it. It’s so good you want it on you regardless. All notes are seamlessly blended, none stands out but together they are a harmonious whole.

In my humble opinion, the gist of the composition is about J-L Scherrer (Risquée) + amber. The rest is purely Roja duvet cushion - delicate, tender, helpless, infantile - yet elegant because professionally blended. This scent will not tolerate other brand potions on the same shelf. Just like 'above all nations is humanity', above all perfumes is Chypré Extraordinaire .-)))

Strong but not cloying, great sillage, very unisex, its a mix in between Diaghilev and Haute Luxe. That being said imo the best Roja Period and i have tried the most of them. I love everything about this except the price. But if anything is worth getting priced this highly its this. 15/10

I bought a decant of Chypré Extraoirdinaire, and I LOVE it! It smells expensive. Longevity is above average. I could still smell it on my hair the next day. Even my daughter commented on how good my hair smelled. In love with this fragrance!

A strong highly perfumed classic smell somewhat like Diaghilev has but different than that with a fruity violet thing going on. The plum and strong ylang-ylang take it too feminine for me but it's not bad, didn't blow me away to be honest.

It smells like unpaid bills and youthful debt. But if I didn't know the price I would say it smells like a well established garden moments after a bumblebee stings you. It might add a new color to your aura, but so does a vacation.

Soft rounded and luxurious - agree with below the sample was a splurge let alone a full bottle £375 is my tops for a bottle..! I love Roja the brand and the ethos but I was surprised how on me this barely lasted an hour or two ....

Would take Enigma Parfum over this one any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Brutally overpriced heavy floral scent. Smells similar to Diageluv but much more floral and far less Adventurous

Diaghilev is superior to this with comparison, very fem. Has got the DNA of Diaghilev but this is the ladies version for sure. Reminds me of the vintage creeds for women.

I don't know why oakmoss is listed in the notes, Roja himself said that the "extraordinary" thing about it was that it was created without the use of oakmoss.

I smelled white floral (tuberose and jasmine-nonexistent) and sandalwood. It's too "animalistic" to my liking.

I’ve been in this game for 12 years, and I have finally found a masterpiece. This is phenomenal.
