H The Exclusive Parfum

Quiet luxury and quiet goodbye I had been lusting after the scents from this H Exclusive collection, but revisiting them after a long time made me question the whole idea of buying full bottles at such high prices. They’re discontinued, and like many Roja fans, I’ve felt that pull to hunt down every “lost gem.” Still, this one doesn’t justify the chase. Even I - who can usually rationalize any Roja purchase - can’t find a real reason to own it. It could easily sit within the regular Femme line without anyone noticing the difference. The scent itself is undeniably beautiful. You can’t really go wrong with it. It’s a soft, seamless blend of florals and fruits, with a texture that feels both creamy and powdery. It’s refined, elegant, endlessly gentle - radiating a quiet, effortless femininity. And yet, I could describe 51 Femme, Enigma Femme, or even Britannia in almost exactly the same way. Britannia, of course, operates on another level in terms of depth and complexity, offering far more to explore. But here, there’s so little distinction that it becomes hard to justify its place. That’s the paradox with Roja: the fragrances are stunning, but often too similar in mood and atmosphere. You don’t really need them all, because they don’t serve clearly different purposes. It’s not about matching scents to occasions or styles - it’s about chasing subtle nuances, collecting variations of the same emotional tone. If I really tried to pinpoint something unique about this fragrance, I’d come up empty-handed. What I can admire, though, is the impeccable blending and that signature aura of quiet luxury that defines so many Roja creations. Many people criticize Roja’s newer direction - and I understand why. I do it myself. But when I look at my own collection - nearly 40 bottles and around 25 decants and samples - I can’t help but wonder how the brand could have continued in the exact same style without becoming repetitive. Even before the shift, the catalog was already full of fragrances with only the slightest differences, especially to the average wearer. That said, the level of quality and the sense of luxury in both scent and presentation could - and should - have been preserved. It’s rare, but this is one of those times I finish a decant with a genuine smile, feeling almost divine - and then simply let it go. No urge to hunt down a bottle. No sense of missing out. Just quiet satisfaction. And honestly, there are far more meaningful gaps in my collection waiting to be filled like for example Harrods Pour Femme Parfum, O The Exclusive, Roja Dove Perfumery 21, Parfum de la Nuit 3, just to mention some. A venture into hostile luxury territory for me - a random raffle win, which paid and pays off handsomely. ALL Roja scents are ludicrously expensive and I haven't smelled many as they are made for a different world and budget level than mine. And this isn't anything like my personal dream scent, either; plenty about its composition actively put me off, at least at first. Going into glitzy-money venues like the Harrods perfume hall makes me profoundly uneasy - it's just not my turf. Therefore Roja's H The Exclusive is an unlikely like. It's not a real-life proposition - I don't have the pockets to buy myself a travel atomiser of this, let alone a FB! Yet still, my serendipitous 9ml is going to get used and loved and appreciated. So how did this accident of fate end up winning me over, after I won over the odds to win it? This is brisk, crisp, almost chypre-y at the beginning, with a lot of zingy citrus smooooshed together with enough spice and wood to darken and complicate it plenty. Perhaps a little TOO complex for my taste - it's hard to pick out individual natural notes in its plush, lush, very polished aura. It's all very 'perfume-y' at first, and I don't necessarily mean that as a compliment; this sort of smooth, ultra-blended, rather traditional, and pretty (apparently) conventionally femme scent often alienates me a bit. I feel a little lost in a department store perfume hall, with too many smells jockeying for attention, an overload of notes blending in ways they were never meant to, and somewhat intimidated by the shiny, glossy, well-groomed ladies all around me. BUT. (Maybe I'm just a bit too much of a plebeian to fully appreciate the finer things in life and need to educate my nose a bit more. ) Hold on for a while. This Lady H is a lot warmer and more straightforward the more time you spend with her, relaxing into several genuinely lovely phases as the citrus and brighter flower notes recede more within an hour or two, the initial sharpness ebbs, and there are layers and layers of straight-up beautiful resins and creamy gardenia and super-classy, extra-mellow renditions of sandalwood and cedar beneath. It's surprisingly strongly resinous (I almost thought, wrongly, there was some chewy tolu in there, the base is so warm and bouncy and long-lasting) and characterful after that slightly chilly open. Lasts like a champ (up to 18h on fabric, and up to 12h on skin) with that warmer, softer, gentler later character as a skin scent, which is how I like it best. Very bossy projection for the first 45-90 mins (maybe one of the reasons I flinched a bit at first) but it does shrink fast. I don't mind. For those with the means, who like charismatic, complex, rather old-school but undeniably lush and quality 'woman of substance' scents, I think. It's not a bombastic diva, a screeching nouveau-riche trophy wife or a spoiled teenage billionaire brat. More like the smell of a woman who's already in the C-suite with her own job, never flies in anything less than first class, and buys her own nice things, thank you very much. That's not really me - though it's something to aspire to - but it might be you?

There's a sour feeling in the opening, an exquisite melange of woods is guided by a citrus-sour accord made by bergamots, gardenia, ylang and some resines. You're in the middle of a vast forest of high trees, sitting in a bench of fresh-cut-woods, now you can close your eyes. You're already in a meditative state.
