Romeo di Romeo Gigli

I received a mini bottle of Romeo Gigli as a freebie with a few other vintages I purchased in a lot. I hadn't ever heard of the brand prior to this, so I'm going in blind. My immediate reaction: 90s amber floral? 80s chypre fruity? Regardless, I am pleasantly surprised. This is a dynamic perfume that exceeds my expectations. I don't think Fragrantica lists all of the notes. To my nose Romeo Gigli starts off smelling dewy, intensely herbal, and green. Galbanum, violet leaf, marigolds, and the piquant rasp of hyacinth. The cassis buds marry these green elements to the fruity notes and floral bouquet. The base has deep, sweet ambers, incense, oakmoss, cosmetic powder. Romeo Gigli feels ahead of its time. It has the orchestral heft I associate with '80s fare, but it also incorporates some of the lighter, translucent qualities I associate with '90s perfumery. I normally prefer 70s chypres to 80s chypres, but this is a fantastic 80s chypre. The progression registers as balanced and sophisticated. A distinctive, unique perfume that stands out from others of this style.

This is a bitter green zing, breaking stems, crushing basil leaves, burying one's nose in tagetes marigolds, climbing through honeysuckle bushes on late spring days, on the cusp of summer. It is preparing fruit salad in an orange blossom hothouse slicing carambola and mango. It is bumblebee butts hanging out freesias, ants single file, carrying perfumed petals to the young as precious ambrosia. Lots of buzz-buzz, whirring and sunbeams. Then it sizzles into the balsam realm, as if to represent nightfall, while the nocturnal creatures stir in the grasses and hedges, strange moths feasting on privet blossoms, crunchy ivy on old church walls at dusk (crazy imagination renders an ivy-fragrance fabric softener!), glowing green town hall clock towers. I then imagine pondering old wooden artifacts, some with elaborate carvings, then I realize my hands are dusty, my whole body is dusty, and I bathe myself, using the coziest, absorbent towel imaginable to dry off. Ahhhhhh....relaxing.

Cassia freesia and mango to me are the prominent notes here. then lime, basil, orange blossoms, agrumes, and incense. those notes are "firms" into this masterpiece. Actually at the same time this is a very elegant and Sophisticated perfume, I can easily imagine a First Lady or a noble young woman in tailleur wearing this, and by the other side i sense a child-style scent. In the 90s a friend of mine was wearing this perfume, so while we were going to catch the bus for school she asked me a bit worried "do you think this fragrance is too sweet?" I said " no.. I have just the feeling to walk beside a giant candy". And I feel to say the same now, Romeo Gigli has that multi-berries/raspberry candy taste. Surely that face is softened by florals and soapy/cologne allure. So the fragrance itself is fresh and but not too sweet.. even if it was of me I would rate this composition as fruity floral. Repeat: a no-time masterpiece. For fairy women of high class.

it makes me so sad that this perfume is discontinued. a few years ago i found it in a small store but it wasn't the original formula. i have a small purse spray of the early 90s formula given to me by an aunt. i don't use it because i don't want to finish it. i take hits of it every now and then, with my eyes closed and probably a goofy expression on my face from the sheer pleasure that it is to smell this. i have never encountered another fragrance quite like this. both sharp and green but with traces of juicy fruits and at the same time dry and smokey. and freshly spicy from beginning to end. I think what I'll do is look for fragrances that have similar notes. This has basil in it and I know of many men's fragrances with basil not too many women's. Marigold seems to be a flower not used in today's perfumes but I know Eternity has it, and what is asafoetida? I want to smell as similar to Romeo as possible. I love this perfume!

I was rapidly hurtling toward my mid-twenties when this Romeo Gigli fragrance was launched, and it seemed a fittingly pretty-yet-assertive scent for that phase of my life. I tore through the first bottle and now the second bottle is mostly used, and I don't revisit it often, but it was very well-loved for the period in which I wore it. I adore bergamot and it really seemed to pop for me. This shared the quality of my favorite scents in that I never lost a sense of it even with daily use-- and I enjoyed it immensely. I love when other people are very complimentary of my fragrance and it's flattering and enticing to have that appeal with others, but for me, the fragrance I'm wearing is ultimately about self-pleasure. :)

This is such a pure, unique, one of a kind frag.Not a hit of synthetic anything. The strongest note for me is Basil mixed with Carnation, white flowers and just a hint of citrus. Unfortunately BEWARE !! If you are buying the little mini's on ebay they are probably FAKE as well as the "NEW stock" New bottle. I have purchased several on ebay and I was so depressed .. But I found a vintage bottle, 1/2 used and OMG I am in heaven. I SO SO miss this Gem. The Original juice was always a golden color. Funny because I do not find this frag sharp at all. It is a rich, fresh, sultry unique bottle of beauty.

This is the first time I've ever been compelled to review anything truly...anyway, I bought a nearly full bottle off eBay for my 22 birthday, I'm 27 now. I am an August Virgo, and this perfume has been the only constant beside my phone these past 5 years. The marigold and grass notes are so late summer, the lingering of a spicy wood is winter will be here soon-so be on time. This is perfume for hardworking isolation, coffee, going to parties, and having a confusingly off-putting yet warm vibe. Doesn't have much last on the front end but give it a few years and you'll realize it's nearly eternal.

Bought as a blind buy based on reviews here. Have the eau de toilette. Love the bottle btw. My first overt scent is the marigold. Then the others, what stood out in the top notes are the bergamot and lime. After 5 minutes it was LO)VE. What an interesting scent. I mostly wear very vintage classic such as Shalimar and Mystere de Rochas but have been trying modern frags for a few weeks. Will definitely wear this, I think a man could wear this too. Fells like a fall or early spring scent to me. But then, I live in a beach town in Florida.

This fragrance is transporting. It brings me to an ethereal, spring garden. And for some strange reason, this is one of the few floral fragrances that lasts on me. Eight hours of longevity is quite a feat with my body chemistry. The evolution of this fragrance is a bit unique as the usual base note of sandalwood mixes with orris root to create a fresh, clean drydown. You would think the orris root would make the drydown powdery, but the fragrance remains wet throughout. Why, oh, why was it discontinued?!

The beginning of the perfume seems to be a masterpiece. Such juicy green tart stems, leaves and buds of the most fragrant meadow grasses and yellow-orange flowers crushed in the palms. It's hot, the greenery is full of living creatures, and everything alive smells. Then the aroma and taste of soaked apples joins in. The apples become sweeter, and the powderiness and balsamic notes gradually reveal themselves. This is real aromatherapy in a bottle!

This is how modern 00s Balmain fragrances should smell like! I have a feeling testing it again and again from my 7,5 ml treasure, that the nose was told: make something like Ivoire and make it so it would be thumbs up from the under 30 generation back in the 80s early 90s. For me it is Ivoire without the spices, and one day I will have a big bottle of this as well as its mother Ivoire and its sister edt.

I received a miniature from a retail perfume shop today and I think it smells exactly as I remember :) I think it was the first or maybe 2nd perfume I used as a teenager and I still love it! So recognisable! There is something special in it but since I have no clue about notes I can not tell what it is. I do think flowers in a wet wood describes the scent quite well I think.

I really think Mariella nailed it for 100% with her review on this perfume, it is very very fresh, green but flowery and citrus too! I placed it in the Vent Vert fragrance family! I have it for decades now and I think it is a masterpiece for sure!

This fragrance has aged very well! 30 years later and it still smells modern. I’m a man who loves floral scents and I find this to be unisex. Projects very well but I just got it so can’t yet describe the longevity. Will update.

I first feel in love with this in 1996 I was in Florida and was drawn in by the bottle....It is so crisp and soft. It makes me feel warm and sensual.....

I bought this unsniffed purely because of the lovely bottle, and after reading the notes again, did not expect to like it AT ALL. Thankfully, I was so wrong! I'm super picky about floral fragrances, especially those with lots of citrus notes, but this is very beautiful and refreshing! It has just enough citrus in the beginning to wake me up and give a boost of energy, then a wonderful mix of spring flowers make it soft and romantic. I see this as a perfect day-time fragrance, especially in spring or summer. Classy, elegant, and energetic - too bad it's discontinued!

Very reminiscent of the 90’ties to me which may be because of the asafoetida. Quite a few of the perfumes I both loved and wore had that distinct note, i.e Tendre Poison, Calice Becker's version of Vent Vert and Escada (being only slightly noticeable in the latter). Asafoetida is such a unique feature and I still very much enjoy fragrances with just a hint of it. Romeo was the forerunner and it brought an instant smile to my face, when I smelled it again after so many years. I still enjoy it and find it just as wearable today. Glad to own a bottle again.

I wore this when I was in my teen. Revisited it again now. It's still the same but I think it's a bit greener, something bitter green. Found out later it was marigold. Though I don't like marigold, its interestingly mixed with citrus makes Romeo Gigli a unique scent. It is still one of my go-to perfumes when I'm bored with fruity floral and flowery scents that I own. A daily perfume suitable for running errands, going out, sports, etc. Long lasting also. On me it's usually 6-7 hours.

That a strange one, but I love it, its very middle-summerish, and somewhat so fresh-strong-grassy that all I can see/imagine think of is old pond in the middle of old garden enclosed to the old house, at day-time its full of dragonflies but at night time!... you see strange fairy-tale creatures wondering around...! The question is HOW working with such innocent notes the perfumer achieved such sillage and piercing glance of water-fairy who hides behind that bulrush.

it's like if rococo went contemporary. romeo is a blind buy that somehow knew me first. smells like the first page from the powdery diary of an 80s teenage girl too mature for her age. i'm not a floral person but romeo surprised me. there's a sweetness that dives beyond my nose and goes straight to my throat. though i don an androgynous outfit wearing romeo i feel like a total sweetheart. it’s tender in a way few things are now. will always come back to romeo.

When a perfume has rating over 4, I consider it a safe blind buy. Maybe I will not like it every day all day, but there is a huge chance I will like it nonetheless. This perfume was a blind buy and a good one. It is fresh, a bit sour. It reminds me of a walk in the meadow, when the heat makes the flowers smell of pollen and your skin smells of sunscreen. Maybe I have these associations, because I was testing it in summer.

This is incredibly green as the reviewers wrote. By applying more this time I am reminded a little of Vent Vert. I find this more comfortable to wear however. Still, it does manage to clear my sinuses and make my eyes sting just a little. Crisp is a good word. Invigorating even. Bit masculine. I enjoy it more when I apply a little less. Really interesting. Refreshing in warm weather. (Vintage miniature worn).

What a hidden gem!! And affordable to boot!! It’s a strong like for me! This is such a beautiful green floral! A little bit soapy and a bit earthy! I really pick up lily of the valley! It’s has such good sillage. Perfect for spring and summer but could easily be worn in any season! This is office friendly and beautiful yet you won’t smell like everyone else! Gorgeous!

This is a really interesting one. I can't recall smelling anything like this before. It's definitely green and aromatic. Floral, but not feminine. I didn't like it the first time I tried it, but I have since come to appreciate it. I definitely have to be in the mood for it but when I am, I do enjoy it. I think it's best suited for Spring & Fall.

First bottle of perfume my father bought me many years ago.I wonder how he decided to buy this scent among so many others....That might always be a mistery. I must have another bottle just to remember my dear Papa'..

Got a mini from the reputable store. Like it but will not need full bottle (thought about buying in pure parfum form based on the reviews). Yes, marigold predominates. Pleasant but not so special for me.

Indeed, it smells like giorgio by Giorgio Beverly Hills without oakmoss. This one has green note instead of oakmoss. I prefer this one. I bought this from Perfumania online.

Romeo di Romeo Gigli is an intriguingly complex scent, that is rather difficult to classify, though proclaiming it an aromatic floral may be as useful a designation as any. The note that both helps define and obscure Romeo Gigli's affinities is the ultra-polarizing note of asafoetida. Of course, asafoetida is only being used in minute quantities here. It would hardly be considered a perfume at all if asafoetida were made blatant. Even with only the slightest hint in the background, asafoetida's pungent stench of garlic and dung is enough to set off subliminal alarm bells. Romeo Gigli is certainly not a scent designed to calm or soothe either the wearer, or those adjacent in space. Pushy attention-seekers take note! The rest of the notes also seem like oddly defined company. Is this actually the scent of blended marigold, basil, citrus, cassis, carnation, mixed florals, and orris (...and asafoetida). Perhaps. Adding to the uncertainty,, marigold is an imprecise note that might signify either Calendula, Tagetes, or occasionally some other plant entirely. By the way, can somebody change the spelling on the cassis note? It has somehow become confused with that of cassia. Wearing Romeo Gigli out in public must be a daring experience (I haven't done it). It's the kind of scent that may gain one some curiosity or positive attention, if detected near the subliminal threshold, ...but a loud, bold dose of it just might start a fight! Interesting to read that this is considered comparable to Vent Vert, which also contains a dash of asafoetida, However, Vent Vert is also a distinctively sharper and greener scent, as the name does suggest. The bottle is a remarkable object. That folded wisp of translucent plastic 'smoke' has iconic singularity, ...and without the cap, the bottle becomes a perfume-shooting flying saucer. The aesthetic is similar to that of the Memphis Group, though I've been told that Gigli designed the bottle himself.

This one is all about the nose as alchemist. I have a friend who is an excellent cook. One late night she made tomato-based pasta sauce with pickle juice and other random things she had lying around her pantry and out of this hodgepodge she made the best pasta sauce I’ve ever had. Mind you, I didn’t enter into eating it with confidence! I don’t mean to suggest that a Romeo is haphazard. Just that an inspired expert can take such unlikely notes and create a whole that I could never predict. It walks a tightrope between sweet and sour and remains refreshing all day, as it continues to show slightly different facets of its nature. Truly, sublime. Also not crazy expensive in the aftermarket. Give it a whirl! Just realized that Jan Moran has a completely different note list. Her notes correspond much more closely with my experience of this scent. She also lists the launch as 1990 Top: Sicilian lime, bergamot, mandarin, mango, black currant bud Middle: orange blossom, rose, wild lily of the valley, jasmine, white carnation Base: incense, iris, sandalwood Cleopatra’s Boudoir has even more notes listed, including petitgrain (which tracks, because Romeo is so smooth) but you should visit her site and look for yourself, because she’s awesome and is worth the click.

Fragrance Review For Romeo by Romeo Gigli Top Notes: lime, asafoetida, mandarin orange, citruses, basil, mango, marigold bergamot Middle Notes: Carnation, iris, orange blossom, cassia, freesia, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley rose Base Notes: Sandalwood, orris root, benzoin and incense This is a magnificent Oriental fragrance. It is complex and heavily layered, throws out a lot of scents and has an incredibly long life. They don't make them like this anymore. The citrus and lime stand out as it opens. Smells too citric for me but I like how it smells on a friend that wears it. The mango begins to appear as the fragrance leaves behind the opening phase and enters it's middle phase. The heart is floral with carnation, powdery iris, sweet orange blossom and rose. The flowers linger for a long time allowing you to enjoy their fragrance. By the time the scent dries down it's pure incense and sandalwood almost like a strong Arabic oud with incense. Beautiful, aromatic, spicy, floral and fresh. Highly recommended for fans of Orientals.

I can absolutely see how it’s the same perfumer as Organza by Givenchy. I have a vintage formula of Organza and Romeo Gigli is like a more streamlined version of Organza. I know people will kill me for saying that, but that’s what my nose and skin picks up! There’s a lot of notes listed, but I’m not picking up all of that. It’s a clean green and powdery perfume, I can’t tell what floral note is most present. Possibly the lily of the valley? My nose is sensitive to that floral note. The greeness is more prominent. It could be unisex like people say but it is not a typical ‘masculine’ smell by any means. Whatever that ‘asafoetida’ spice is people have a problem with just disregard, it’s not an unpleasant smell. I’m not sure of the exact name of the greenness is but I also smell it in Catch Me by Cacharel. I thought it was petitgrain or some kind of orange blossom flower. I was very scared to buy this because there aren’t many online reviews, but I’m so happy to have in my collection!

Blind buy based on an obscure memory since i was young and i saw It on someone’s nightstand (and tested it, without their knowledge 🫣), it’s not what I remembered at all it but it’s nice anyway. I remember it being more balsamic and since benzoin is listed I was sure I was right, however it’s very herbal, which I like anyway. It’s just not what I expected. However, I just received it in post so it might need macerating or it might be a fake. It seems to fade fast as well. If anyone has an original and they’re 100% it’s original, I would be curious if the cap is entirely grey or it has a white ribbon like it’s pictured here. Also if it has low silage and persistence.

Fresh, green, floral springtime fragrance. My signature daytime fragrance for spring and summer (when I can find it). The combination of fresh herbal basil with sensuous florals of jasmin and freesia are in perfect harmony. I receive compliments every time I wear this wonderful and hard-to-find fragrance. Don't be fooled by the mini samples, they do not capture the fresh scent of the larger sizes. I don't know why it was ever discontinued. If you love the smell of nightblooming jasmine or fresh green gardens and white flowers after a summer rain, you'll love this one.

Asafoetida is my mortal enemy. The stinky/sweaty stuff should never be used in perfumes, and yet it is - looking at you, Ivoire! In RG it's one of the prominent notes, supported by a photo realistic orange blossom note. Sillage and lasting power are pretty good, and the perfume is def. unisex. RG is well made and presented in a decorative bottle with a unique ribbon stopper. Although there's a lot to like about RG, I can't get over the asafoetida note. Curse you, stinky stuff! That's another perfume you've ruined for me.

I wore this as a young teenager, when it first came out, I was in grade nine. No wonder I have high standards for perfume. This bottle was on my perfume counter for years as I wore vivid belted dresses and listened to Michael Jackson, INXS, Pet Shop boys and read Stephen King until the wee hours of the morning during my sunburnt summers. Thank goodness that as an adult, on a whimsical trip to Spain, I found my dear Romeo Giglli and we are together again.

On my close friend, this is a delicious, complex resinous green, almost an ambery citronella. It gave the impression of an herbal healer, a lady wearing the cream and white skirts of summer in a yellow walled room, surrounded by marigolds and dandelions, slyly sophisticated. On me, a horrible powdery thing, like a seasonally decorated waiting room. Don't know what went wrong. Gave it away.

The bottle is ICONIC. Somehow I smell oakmoss, but it could just be all the citrus mixing with the asafoetida and herbal aspects of florals like marigold, plus incense. It's intoxicating and refreshing simultaneously! It's weird and stinky and I love it. I imagine wearing it at a party after a disco nap recuperating from a long day at the beach. The mango & basil is a vibe.

It’s cool, I dig it. Pleasant, like your skin but better kind of scent, fresh towel, dryer sheet, comfortable. In the same vein as original Dolce&Gabbana, the red cap. It’s not a bitter green, it’s a warm aromatic. Anyone could wear it. Perfect unisex. Almost spray toner like, refreshing. Cool bottle too. Worth the 22$ it goes for, brand new sealed in the box.

The bottle looks way much nicer than it looks here.The note of ASAFOETIDA in a perfume! Come on! Citrusy and refreshing, reminds me of "Calyx". Can be used by men too, not too feminine in my opinion. Love it.

this was a gift when I was dating a gorgeous boy from the south of France from his mum. I really liked this one. My memory escapes me a bit though. I would like to smell it again if I could....

Beautiful and bitter-green aromatic chypre. I love the sweet powderiness in the background. Being fresh and floral-sweet, Romeo is perfect on this blustery & overcast October morning.

The original was amazing, rich floral. recently i sampled the new and possibly reformulated version and it was a sinthetic mess, what a disappointmen.
