Rosendo Mateu No.5 — Alexandria II’s Clean-Freak Cousin So here’s the deal: If Xerjoff Alexandria II is the refined Middle Eastern prince who smells expensive but not overwhelmingly oud-y then Rosendo Mateu No.5 is his Western cousin who moved to Barcelona, drinks cortado, irons his shirts daily... but spill some tea on him, and he loses his mind. The resemblance? Sure there’s familiar DNA: a musky vanilla-amber base, a bit of spice, a hint of florals. But while Alexandria II wears its oud like a silk robe “elegant, discreet, mature” No.5 glides in polished loafers and opens with a note that straight up smells like burnt rubber on some skins. Not in a bold, smoky leather jacket way. More like: “Did someone burnout in a Tesla outside?” The Opening Spices and saffron show up, but they’re not screaming “Hey, I’m Middle Eastern!” It’s more like: “I first tried saffron in a risotto... in Milan.” Then lily of the valley crashes the scene yelling “Laundry day!” Heart Notes Carnation arrives but chill, it doesn’t smell like a funeral bouquet. More like “lightly spiced deodorant.” So don’t expect Alexandria’s depth — this is Vanilla Club House for Clean Boys. And Then the Base Hits: Amber. Vanilla. White musk. Tonka. And yes — strawberry. It sneaks in like a cheeky milkshake note. Not really sugary. Not really sexy. More like: “Oops, I spilled my girlfriend’s strawberry body lotion on the hotel sheets.” — Alexandria II vs. No.5 Alexandria II might not be the full-on oud bomb some expect, but it still walks in with presence and low-key royalty. No.5? He knocks on the door wearing a crisp white shirt, strawberry lip balm, politely adjusts the carpet corner, and asks if there’s sparkling water. •Alexandria II says: “I’m a king. My hands are washed in petrol.” •No.5 replies: “I studied design in Barcelona and wear linen pants without wrinkles.” 🔚 Bottom Line: Interesting? Yes. Wearable? Absolutely. But that opening? An acquired taste. 8.5/10. It’s Alexandria II after moving to Europe, joining a yoga class and switching to oat milk.

This is indeed a unique perfume with an intoxicating scent profile. Many have referenced a rubbery smell. I get hints of that, and in a somewhat odd way...it adds to the allure of this perfume. Rosendo Mateu No. 5 is that kind of perfume and scent profile that is kind of polarizing. I feel for it to be appreciated, ones nose would have to be mature or experienced to an extent as it does not smell regular...or better put it is not mass appealing, but appealing nonetheless. From my wearing and testing experience, this perfume, is best smelled in the air and not close up on skin. This is where I feel the rubber-like note is experienced. In the air, I get a tamed but intoxicating scent trail, it had me goshing over the whiffs I got all day. One could be tempted to overspary thos perfume as like I mentioned above, it feels tamed. But, this perfume holds its own having very decent longevity. I got 9hrs longevity off 8 sprays. It would have givem me more, but I had my habitual night shower. Its sillage I feel is equally decent. Many fragrance influencers refer to Rosendo Mateu No. 5 as a date night fragrance, I can't disagree. However, I wore mine to the office and it did not feel out of place. Considering I just got the bottle, I intend to try it out in different sceanarios and pick out its best use-case, but I dare to say it is versatile and can be dressed up or used in some casual situations. Do I like Rosendo Mateu No. 5? Absolutely, it is intoxicatingly unique and sensual, with a tamed sweetness and muskiness with no animalic hints from my wearing experience. It is not blind buy safe and IMO won't be appreciated by regular perfume users (no offence intended). It does not shout but will be etched in the memories of those who catch your scent trail. An 8/10 for me ❤️

Bought my bottle back in 2023 and remember that, despite the strong initial rubber smell, I enjoyed the drydown quite a bit. All I had to do is wait for the rubber twang to dissipate. Later on discovered that, being such a strong fragrance, using just a couple of spritzes from further away than normal would somehow tame the strong initial rubber smell, straight into a beautiful, seductive vanilla fragrance. That seemed to help it get to its glorious drydown more easily. At the time I wrote a note here on Fragrantica about my experience with this beast and, a few months later, sort of forgot about my bottle and stopped using it, for no particular reason other than being distracted by other fragrances. Today I was testing Prada Luna Rossa Black at home and for some reason it reminded me a lot of RM5. Not saying they smell the same, but some facets of it reminded me of RM5, maybe the type of sweetness or the similar DNA, don’t know. But I had to compare them both and, to my surprise, after almost 2 years of no use the initial rubber smell has completely disappeared to give way to a deep, rich musky-vanilla scent which is so good, nuanced and powerful that I am very excited for this one to go back into my regular rotation. The juice has also darkened substantially, probably a sign that there has been some change through maturation. I have other fragrances that I enjoy just as much but this is different, almost on another level, to the extent that RM5 could even become one of my favourite fragrances and can’t believe that I almost forgot about this stunning creation. The initial rubber smell is no longer there and appreciate the new, deeper version now more than ever. What a ride.

I also label this as a masterpiece and it is definitely one of the most appealing fragrances I have come across in my long fragrance journey. There is nothing overhyped about this fragrance in my world, this is top notch magician level blend. There is something genius about No5. It is daring and bold as you can see based on the amount of reactions related to the burned rubber vibe, yet for me No5 has a strange case of creating a confidence in pulling the trigger to wear this. And in doing so, it creates this beautiful sensual and balanced aroma that fades out rubber vibes and that is what makes it very wearable to me. Masculine leaning, but can imagine women pulling this off as well. Big fan of the 'rubber' opening, even a bigger fan of the dry down. Usually this type of polarising fragrance would be out of my league, yet it has taken over the number 1 spot for the colder days. When I glance over my collection for the pick of the day, this is the one that screams at me. To me, this is definitely amber over florals instead of the otherway around, but the florals are needed for the right balance. When taking a deep sniff, the florals round it up in such a perfect manner that you can't wait for the next sniffing round. It is immensly addicting. It feels like a love / hate type of of fragrance, therefore I would recommend sampling if you get the chance and try to get past the initial blast to see if it intoxicates you like it did others and myself. This is one of those fragrances that has the potential to create a milestone in your fragrance journey if you're in the love camp. One of the best wearable winter niche fragrances for me! 10/10

RM No. 5 was my very first blind buy and I was NERVOUS AF bc I am pickyyyy and particular about my fragrances! Luckily for me, I LOVE IT. I’ve seen the comparisons to Babycat and honestly, while I like it, No. 5 has an edge IMO as it’s more unique (though they give off similar vibes, and they’re definitely dissimilar enough to justify having both in your collection). Babycat is a well done spicy vanilla that’s yummy but just a little linear and basic, especially for the price point. No. 5 is just a lot sexier & more nuanced: a spicy, warm, vanilla and creamy-ish floral vibe with a little addictive rubbery dirtiness in the opening few minutes. I can smell the spice and sweetness, the vanilla and the carnation, and I literally cannot stop smelling my hand where I sprayed. It’s so sexy and sophisticated, not overbearing at all. While neither frag is giving me beastly silage as of yet, I’m thinking I’m possibly a lil noseblind to this (happens to me sometimes with certain perfumes during initial tests). Looking forward to seeing if this garners compliments on my first real wear, but No. 5 is a winner regardless! And at around $100 a bottle it’s an easy investment. tldr: worth the hype, sexier and more unique than Babycat at an amazing price.

the first time i smelled this on my arm i absolutely loved it. Bought a full bottle, took it home, sprayed myself with it and immediately understood why people smell rubber and car-tyres in this.. The first time i wore my own bottle (in the car with 4 sprays) it was nauseating and i seriously doubted my life choices.. I felt sad and didn'nt understand how it could be so good in store and so chemical in real life. Since then i have learned that this fragrance is absolutely magnificent, if and when used in the right way. It is essential to not overspray this, spray from a little distance, preferably on places not to near to your nose (i spray my wrists, the back of my shoulders ) and wear this in open spaces.. When done this way, this is an amazing, very special, intoxicating vanilla.. there really isn't anything like it.. It is to be enjoyed as a scent bubble around you.. not with your nose on top of is.. and the sillage is beautifull and lovely that way. Happy i made our relationshop work. And: if you happen to have kayali yum pistachio .. for some reason it combines briljant with this..

Pro tip: if you spray RM5 further away from your skin, the rubber tone that some people complain about (saffron) isn’t at all prominent. The closer to your skin that you apply, the more rubbery this beautiful scent feels. Same happens if you bury your nose in your skin when you wear it. RM5 was masterfully blended to be used lightly, as it is very potent. Used this way, i.e spraying it further away from your skin than you would other fragrances, I personally think it is superior and has more presence than YSL’s Babycat when compared side by side, hands down. But I suppose that some people will still allow their intrusive thoughts to take over despite knowing that the juice needs to be used lightly, driven by their obsessive search for ‘beastly’ and ‘monstrous’ performance. Even the smoothest smelling cup of hot chocolate will feel harsh on your nose if you snort it with a straw. Enjoy.

I blind bought it and I have worn it twice now. First application: wasn’t super thrilled, it reminded me very much of Amber Musc by Narciso Rodriguez and I felt like the Musc was overpowering and just overwhelming. If you don’t like musk I wouldn’t recommend this fragrance. It’s a sharper musk that isn’t balanced out by creamy florals. However, I wore this a second time today and I’m really loving it. Today I got leather and a lot of vanilla, which is so much what I was hoping for from this fragrance. It is extremely long lasting and projects quite a bit. The rubbery smell is definitely there, strongest within the first few minutes of spraying and then it morphs into a leathery note in the background. I’m glad I have this and I find it really alluring and addictive. This could easily be a signature scent and I’m looking forward to getting to know it more.

When I first got this it smelled like rubber tires. Whatever that was that made it smell like that lasted the entirety of the wear. It was really bad, I almost gave up on it. However, I learned that sometimes you have to let fragrances macerate. I was patient mainly because I was curious what the hype was about. I checked on it after about 3 weeks to see if anything changed and I still got hints of that rubber smell. I left it alone again completely and now it’s been about 4 months. I’m so glad I didn’t get rid of this because this is gorgeous and I don’t really have anything like it! It’s this warm spicy ambery vanilla scent that’s truly addicting. I no longer detect that weird rubbery smell at all. This is also a strong and very long lasting fragrance. I get over 10hrs wear. As lovely as this is, it’s definitely not a safe blind buy.

When I wore this and held my wrist up to my favorite test subject, my husband told me I smelled "interesting" (see my other reviews for similar such single word commentary meant to be effusive and thoughtful). For him this just means I don't smell like fruit or flowers. For me, this is not very vanilla forward but is indeed a spiced amber - big on the amber in my opinion - and that's a good thing. The spiced opening is further punched up by the carnation, a note that always has a bit of sharpness for me. But it evolves quickly into a sensual powdered amber with an ever so quiet vanilla musk base. I find this perfume to be a beautiful blend that leans unisex without entering cologne territory. PS - I get no burnt rubber/tire note but perhaps that's what my husband smelled and actually found interesting....?

This is SEXY. A complete sex bomb. Honey pot agents wear this to seduce their targets. That’s the exact image that pops in my head 💋 First and foremost, do not blind buy this like I did. Also, I don’t recommend this for people new to niche. Otherwise, this will be an intoxicating combo of saffron, gentle smooth florals on an amber and vanilla base. It’s seamless, and I must say, this is the smoothest I’ve ever smelled saffron to my nose. It’s always a rough and scratchy little rugrat for me, but it’s pretty smooth and gentle here. If you’re bored of all the same old, same old, this is a delight ❤️ James Bond and Ava from the movie Ava both wear this and wear it WELL. I can’t wait to put on my sexiest black dress and red lip. This fragrance demands it. An absolute masterpiece with insane projection 💋

Love the scent, very addictive and erotic in some way. But it does not suit me, because it does not match my personality (I'm like my profile picture). Rosendo Mateu No 5: Smells like you're sitting inside one of these big festival tents at a fair in the Black Forest, Germany. It's already dark outside and the air in the tent is humid. All the sweet scents from the desert stands nearby selling churros, candied apples and candy canes gets carried over to you - diluted but still noticeable as this complex aerosol of sweetness and tender spiciness. Then this 10/10 woman appears at your table making you a Crêpe Suzette, while you sip on your 10 year single malt Glenmorangie. Don't believe me? Try Rosendo Mateu No 5 while being in this situation and compare.

The more I wear it, the more I love it!! A true cold-weather perfume for me. Opens up so beautifully now in -15C weather.. It has become my cool weather signature since I bought the full bottle late October, replacing Mon Guerlain.. Long lasting, unique, definitely not safe to blind buy, and not even buy after trying 1x.. It took me 3 times of trying on skin to start liking it, but the apreciation just keeps growing every time I apply this unique beauty. Yes, there is the burnt plastic/tyre note. No, it does not bother me. it gives the scent its unique character and differentiates it from all the boring ambery-vanilla perfumes the fragrance space has been over-saturated with recently.. Try it. You'll either love it or hate it. There is no in-between.

I've tried Animalique, L'Eau D'Ombre Leather and Babycat, and while I liked all of them, I can't say that I was really blown away by any of them. Right as I started thinking that this DNA just isn't for me, I tried this one and now I get it. This is really pretty. Yes, they're all very similar to this one, but this is the more rubbery, dry and powdery one out of the bunch, the vanilla is also quite subdued and the way it contrasts against the leathery base is amazing. It's important to mention that this release also predates all of the other scents I've mentioned by a few years, performs just as well if not better and costs significantly less. I need to give it a few more wears before I make a final decision but I might even go for a full bottle.

On my skin, this is very powdery. VERY powdery. If I didn’t take a look at the notes I’d assume it’s a powder dominant fragrance. very confusing. It also smells ethereal to me, fairy like! I can recognize the “rubber” note, but to me it doesn’t smell like rubber. It’s just a note that gives perfume some uniqueness! Update 22/10/2025: Purchased a full bottle. I feel like this perfume doesn’t smell like any of the listed notes or accords. The best way I can describe it is that it smells like something from a different universe. It’s intriguing and mysterious, yet so easy to love. I don’t think it’s as polarizing or harsh as people make it out to be, it’s actually very soft and beautiful. But yeah you definitely have to test it before purchasing.

There's probably something wrong with my nose, this smells like cookies to me. I can detect the rubber/latex accord, but it’s not off-putting, and I feel like that adds a certain je ne sais quoi to this. Edit: (2-13-2024) I have just smelled Babycat. They somewhat smell similar, they are both sexy, but RM5 smells softer and more airy while Babycat is spicier. RM5 smells like vanilla cookies to my nose, but Babycat doesn't get as sweet on my skin. I still prefer RM5. I think having both would be redundant not because they smell the same (I don’t think they do), but because they fit the same category, unless you really like the DNA, then go ahead. Try Eau de Audacity as well. Scent: 10/10 Projection: 9/10 Longevity: 8/10

I can't say enough about this. Every time I wear it, I am stunned. first, I can smell it on myself throughout the day...beautiful wafts of spiced amber and musk, It smells sophisticated and sexy, and I feel very powerful wearing this. Super chic, very luxurious. There is a slight rubber accord, but I feel like it's really only when I smell it out of the bottle or right when I first spray it. It subsides quickly, and something really more beautiful takes its place. I absolutely love it and think this will be heavy in my rotation this fall/winter. It is probably more suited to nighttime. I did wear it to work the other day, but it projects a fair amount, so not something I would want to wear in meetings for example.

I had a sample of this for quite a while and did not try it until a week or so ago. By the next morning, I knew I had to have it. So, I ran to a boutique near my home and got it. Since then I have become addicted and worn it every single day. My husband is in love with it now and every time I wear it out people follow me to ask me what I am wearing. THIS IS A GEM. It's mostly a smooth vanilla scent with some exotic florals and then some very smooth amber. It's not milky or powdery to my nose, but just very creamy smooth. If you do try it, spray it on and give it time to develop so you can appreciate it's beauty as I have grown to. This is a signature scent worthy scent. I am 100% in love.

A very brilliant creation. May smell controversial to some but honestly I find it one of the best vanilla based fragrances. Very rich and intense bourbon vanilla, sweetly balanced with a smooth amber base. I remember the first time trying I didn’t read anything about it. And that musk/rubber like accord I didn’t pay attention to it all I remember that it did smell really unique. now I can’t stop thinking about it😂 but honestly it is one of my favorites! Well blended fragrance that leaves a lovely continuous trail behind you! Per Longevity: +8h on skin, +12h on clothes Projection: 2-3h, and continues to leave a trail without being overwhelming.

I simply love this fragrance, such an ethereal amber experience! Wearing this always lifts my mood, its like Rosendo took all the positive attributes of Amber, Musk and Floral notes and created this Masterpiece. I sniffed so many fragrances in 2021 and let me tell you that this fragrance was in my top 5. It is indeed like Alexandria II in the dry down, you might sniff some very polished oudy note, and also it has some musky elements from Prada Black. OH MAN! I cant say enough good things about this fragrance, if you love vanillic, ambery, ethereal fragrances. Blind buy this. Longevity 8+ Hours 10/10 Masterpiece.

I’ve owned this for over a year and this is one of the most sensual fragrances you can wear. Just extremely silky and smooth. I see a lot of comparisons to babycat but in my opinion they’re two different fragrances. You can definitely own both without your collection being redundant. I also don’t get any burnt rubber/hospital/dentist office accord everyone keeps saying. And I’m glad because to me this is amazing. I mostly get a very thick vanilla note with a lot of amber but the way it’s constructed just smells erotic. Fall/Winter or cool nights going out this is extremely easy to wear for me. 10/10

true story: sprayed this onto my wrist and walked out of the shop. my friend stopped dead in his tracks and said "what is that" told me i smelled like the sexiest thing ever and that he would get down on his knees for me. Wouldn't shut up about how i needed to get it. a month later i bought it lol. haven't been disappointed since. its very polarizing and smells very different from skin to skin...which make this unique and cool. I get the rubber in the opening but it doesn't bother me. Layering this is phenomenal, works SO well with delina exclusif and gris charnel. I will love this forever.

I am a big fan of this fragrance. I had a bottle over a year and now it almost finished. I bought a new one yesterday and to my surprise the juice is light in colour, almost transparent, the old one was more golden colour. I think it has been reformulated but couldn’t find anything on the internet about it. As for the scent. The old bottle the vanilla is more detectable than the new one especially in the opening but in the dry down both are the same. But i am more concerned about its performance because the old bottle was a complete beastmode and a room filler.

Love this scent! Vanilla scent is overused in our live, so this might not smell to you very original or unique at first but at the same time you will discover this is not your typical run-of-the-mill scent! The vanilla is dark and complex, yet airy and extremely wearable and versatile. Very close to Babycat by YSL but a bit more challenging and has some personality! Once again, if vanilla is something you have had enough of, you will not like it. Otherwise, I can't see anyone hating this. Great performer with tamed but powerful projection. Try it!

I had a 5 ml sample from a friend, she called it the sexiest scent ever. Sex in a bottle she said. Well, not my type for sure. I mean it has a right to be but I definitely don’t want to smell like that often. 5ml will do. It’s very strong artificial scent of sweet vanilla, amber, rubber, and some sweat underneath of it. I’d say it smells like inside one of those rooms in Amsterdam red light district. Latex, sweat and vanilla scent condoms. Update: I bought it 🙈 Couldn’t stop smelling my scarf with this scent on it. Ah. Sexy and warm

It took me awhile to understand this marvel. I truly believe people have different chemistry with any fragrances. However, people with untrained noses or limited experience in olfactory understanding of ingredients can have jerk reaction that this smells as burnt rubber. It does not. The blend of notes including carnation and spices might lead to the conclusion once again because of inexperience. Love this perfume. Needs a tiny bit for application and can be a signature fragrance imho. So unique, sexy and beautiful.

Idk why but when I smell this I picture the most expensive , gold sequined dress. Idk if there is saffron in here but I think I detect it, gives it a slight leathery or rubbery nuance- along with this sugar crystallized vanilla and the carnation which gives it an spicey yet vivid undertone that’s been dipped in gold, or should I say amber - that is deep and warm. I am totally in love with this fragrance ! And it lasts forever too. It does resemble Babycat a bit

This smells like when I layer Babycat with Bianco Latte. No complaints, here! This is warm, beautiful, and intoxicating. I never smell “burnt rubber” in these smoky scents. For me, it’s either fireside smokiness or incense smoke and I can’t get enough. This also reminds me of FZOTIC Ummagumma sans the gourmand notes.....it’ll probably layer well with it, as well. I bought a mini 5ml, but I’m definitely buying the full size! Instant classic for me!

I smelt this on a friend at new years and my friend and I couldn’t get over how great he smelt. A few days later plucked the courage to ask him on dm what it was and risk being weird. He said this fragrance. Platonic almost a brother but my oh my was that a sexy fragrance I’m not one to take lightly to asking anyone met alone a guy what they are wearing . Asked 3 people in my life. Now I’m wondering how he got onto this Spanish perfume ?!?!

Spices on steroids! Gives a medicinal, rubbery, screechy vibe. Totally ruins the fragrance. The rest of the scent is really done so beautifully. A beautiful floral vanilla scent ruined by those damned “unspecified” spices. It’s a definite hit or miss. In my case, it’s a miss. My advice is try before you buy. It’s definitely not a safe blind buy. Thanks god I did not blind buy it (i was really close to doing so several times).

I have to join the ranks of people who say this is quite a stellar formulation that may take time to fall in love with. I don't typically have fragrance experiences like that, its usually love or not at first sniff. But after smelling this several times there's just something so pleasant about this - I feel it's just balanced perfectly between the sweet warm and elegant aspects. Definitely worth a try and probably a buy :)

This is subdued sexiness in a bottle. As soon as I got it the performance was below average and the scent though sexy was very mild, I used it once and put it away for about 2 months, today I put it on to pick up my wife from the airport and the perfume is everywhere, and it feels much stronger, sexier but still cozy and extremely elegant. It went from like to love to considering getting a back up bottle.

It smells like poor quality basketball ball rubber, almost nostalgic I would say. I think this note is related to the carnation . It may seem negative, but in modern life, no one will think that you put yourself a rubber fragnance. It doesn't smell like plastic directly on your skin anyway. I feel romantic, mysterious and determined when I use this. Longevity is eternal and sillage is above average.

One of my top five favorite perfumes in my collection. Absolutely stunning, sophisticated not your cookie cutter perfume, for truly one who can appreciate the masterpiece creation. Love from the first sniff. One of a kind on the market. Addicting, unbelievably beautiful, for someone who loves spicy and aromatic notes. Not for everyone as reviews reflect.

Softer and more powdery version of Babycat. Although very similar I don’t think it is redundant to have both. I think this can be worn all year round unlike Babycat. Also I don’t get the burnt rubber scent many people report. For me it’s perfect sensual fragrance from the get go. Projection and longevity are amazing. Well worth the price and the hype.

I was on the fence about getting Rosendo no 5 or Babycat, but I’m so glad I went with Rosendo, it was a total surprise for a blind buy, it’s so unique and well blended that I can’t even pick out individual notes, I know people talk about the rubber/petroleum opening, but it’s actually really nice and not bad at all! I also think it’s very versatile

This perfume is sex on a stick. No. 5 was not an immediate love for me, but the more I smell it, the more I understand the hype. An incredibly sensual and interesting olfactory blend. I don't detect any burned rubber or play-doh or any other weird stuff whatsoever. I almost can't wait until cooler weather so I can wear it for real.

Sweetened rubber and some floral notes, highly unusual and intriguing. I have 3ml decant, i wore it 5-6 times. One day i think like "thats it, im buying the whole bottle" And sometimes: "no way, this smells so weird" but i respect the fragrance, it will scratch that niche itch for something new

This smells like Madonna on a red leather jacket. I think it leans feminine due to the bright floral notes but it smells so damn good that I wouldn't mind wearing it at all. If you smelled a niche or two in your life, you should find that rubber-leather note to be super luxurious and gorgeous.

I blind bought this today and let me tell you...its the best buy I've ever made, even though was skeptical about the burnt rubber notes everyone was talking about....i didn't smell it. Its opening is the same as the first initial babycat batch. So sensual, so sexy, and so deep.

Honestly, reading the reviews about burnt rubber I waa expecting too much, but honestly I was really surprised the scent is definitely floral, unisex and unique. It’s a category on its own. I like it. Can be worn all seasons except may be on hot weather.

It opens very musky and, I would say, it's bitter enough, but catchy, then it becomes sweeter, I love spices and vanilla, it's a perfect spiced latte blend you want for autumn and winter. I would say it's unisex, but not everyone would like it.

So, I feel like a sucker on this one. All my favorite influencers talked me into this one. It was a blind buy, and I regret it. It's not bad in any way but incredibly average and been done a million times. Just not special at all. Meh!
