Royall Muske

My first experience with Royall Muske is with the older formulation, before the Clarecastle Group changed it (sometime in the 90's from what I've read). I hadn't tried a musk forward fragrance in a long while. It's one of those notes that feels so 1970's. But where Royall Muske goes so right is that it is such a soft, warm, CLEAN, and semi-sweet fragrance. It has a pronounced sillage when liberally applied and it will envelop a car cabin, but it's not edgy or biting. As others have said, there's not much else to detect aside from musk. I do pick up some spicy qualities, but the musk prevails. There is a powdery soapy quality, giving a kind of "barbershop" quality, but it's pleasant to me. I can pick up a "baby powder" note in this version, but its slight and not something I'd deliberately notice unless looking for it. After sampling Royall Muske for another day, I have to say that I'm just loving this. A friend of mine who enjoys fragrances applied some to her wrist, took it in, and beamed a big smile "Where did you get this??" Need I say more? ;-) 9.3/10. _______________________________________________________ Btw, I've obtained the current formulation of Muske. Upon an initial whiff of the bottle, my impression is that they didn't change anything. But once applied, it felt weaker and more alcoholic. I figured it was reformulated. However, after some time I discovered that the fragrance "settled" once enough air was in the bottle (about 1/5th depleted). It smells pretty much the same as the vintage bottle I have. The real test was opening up a vintage bottle that had never seen air, and I had the same impression as from the new one. So... it appears Muske is safe from reformulation at the present time.

This is a jewel among many, unique to all, a real musk fragrance. It's very strong though, too strong for me to bear but I got used to it and adore it now, it is a cologne and therefore will not hold up as deep as a toilette or perfume but it's stronger that a splash. It smells extremely masculine, dripping and oozing sexuality, male charisma, charm and desire. It's clean, warm, sweet and strong, I can smell it after the next day. It's weak on longevity but at the price for size, one can spray again if needed. Loved the unique presentation, the box, the little plastic seal, the signature, it's all nice. It smells like a well-groomed man, who has a nice clean haircut, a handsome rugged man with facial hair, he is a sexy beast yet a gentleman. I keep telling myself inside, this smells so good. I think I will always own a bottle of this, always, it's essential, a must-have. It's great for layering with other fragrances, perhaps those that are floral or sweet, this can be a wonderful layer, a base. This cologne is like the heavenly embrace of a handsome prince of a man, a perfect, ideal man, he is strong, charming, sophisticated, and sexual, he is passionate. Musk lovers, this is a necessary fragrance in your list, a delightful musk that i both addictive and romantic. This musk is warm, a bit spicy, I do not recommend it for very hot weather or inside of a hot car. This cologne is pure male sexuality, male essence, male elegance, male energy, male passion, it's orgasmic. I think it has some rum and some form of spice mixed into the musk.

This cologne is like your favourite, faded pair of Levis. Like worn-in boots that have shaped to your feet over the years. Like a cup of hot coffee on the snowiest, most fridgid day of the year. Like a car seat that has been perfectly shaped to fit your body. It's a warm, soft, powdery, semi-sweet musk, with none of the animalistic notes that can make musk accords polarazing. It would be hard for me to believe this could be offensive to anyone unless you overspray, or they don't like fragrance in general. It's also slightly soapy, which gives it a clean & fresh feeling to the nose. Amazing to put on after a shower. I can pick out some light bay-rum, even though it isn't listed as an accord. This is a very natural smelling cologne which definitley won't choke anybody out, and will radiate off your skin, giving you a pleasing scent bubble to anyone that enters your close proximity. Be aware that it only comes in EDC concentration, and becomes a skin scent within 2-4 hours. I typically do 3-5 sprays, but you could probably get away with more if you choose. The 2oz and 8oz are rub on lotions/aftershaves, so if you want the sprayer you will need to select the 4oz size, just thought I should mention. Out of my rather modest collection of about 20 parfumes, this is the only one I can say I truly love and will absolutely have a bottle of this on me at all times. One of the best daily drivers ever. 10/10 to my nose.

Review: Vintage Royall Muske (Original Bermuda Formula – Thick Pewter Metal Cap) genuine deer musk I own and try tons of synthetic and real deer musks because it’s my favorite, ingredient. My only regret is not finding this earlier. I'd pay 10x what I paid for it on eBay. It’s got a touch of bitter orange, nutmeg, and a pinch of clove. But the star of the show is the musk pods used in this old formula. It makes it so warm, smooth, calming, and sexy. It has a very very slight cola vibe of my early edition Zoologist Musk Deer, and a little bit of FM Musc Ravaguer but in vintage way, and this is better than both. I can't get enough of this one and wear it frequently outdoors and to bed. Signature scent worthy. Better than nearly all of my niche musks and easily my best vintage musk. I'm not usually a fan of fragrances with Musk in their names --- while musk is a wonderful note when skillfully blended, as a dominant note it too often conjures up cartoonish images of crude self-styled Lotharios with polyester shirts, gold medallions, and cheesy pickup lines. Royall Muske is a whole different animal --- and a very pleasant surprise. The musk isn't overdone, and is rounded out with a lovely blend of spices (clove, allspice, and bay leaves are what I notice most), amber and vanilla that gets progressively mellower without losing the musk note completely. The overall effect is one of subtle sensuality rather than the shouted "Hey --- smell this!" that most Musks tend to broadcast. This is a winner!

This is an incredible musk fragrance. It's masculine but not harsh and overpowering like some classic drugstore musks/colognes. I detect some bay rum and a little spice in it. Nothing synthetic at all. Not powdery and floral like Kiehl's. It evokes freshness and sexiness. Sillage isn't huge, as it's an EDC. 3-4 sprays around the neck and chest will work perfectly late at night or early in the morning when you expect someone to get really close to you. It's a neck magnet. Fans of barber shop scents should give this a try to expand their repertoire. It may work as a layering fragrance also, but it's simply a very casual fragrance that does the job right for what it is. Grade: A

I tried both this and Kiels. I like them both although they do not smell anything alike.This is a more office appropriate musk.Cleaner and more on the masculine side.A very simple fragrance,I do not detect any single notes but then I don't with the Kiels product either. see my Kiehls review for more detail.@ Furdog This is almost soapy but not like a Prada soapy more like barbershop soapy if that makes sense.It isn't really strong for something from the seventies,subtle for that era. I actually want this as I want all the ones I love and do not have.

There’s a bunch more notes in this than just musk. It’s sweet and spicy and slightly floral powdery. It smells like a bay rum type fragrance to me. You you like old style spicy fragrances like Old Spice or G Trumper Bay Rhum then you like this. Performance is ok.

This is my favorite. I dump it on because I love the way it smells. If there were an ice cream of this flavor, I would like a double-dip cone right now.

Definitely rum and maybe caraway or cumin, there's also a refreshing note that is intense, it comes off as fresh male sweat, a male musky perspiration.

very good clean musk. It is not to heavy or overpowering but it has good lasting power. I find my self wearing this often as it is good for casual or formal wear. To sum it up, it is a perfect scent for all people of all ages (maybe even a bit unisex if worn on the right person). I like how fancy, yet simple it smells. No one could possibly be offended by this simple amazing musky fragrance.

I've had the new version and the older one with real musk deer... I think the older one had gone off, as there was a bit of rotten funk off the top that smoothed out. To me both versions were barely perceptible by a half hour. I like it, but I don't think its an absolute must have... maybe you would want it if you want to see what real musk deer smells like. I much prefer Royall Lime.

I never considered Musk to be a "Barbershop" scent, but Royall Muske is exactly that. You're not going to get loads of compliments, but it's a safe scent for any occasion. No comparison to Musc Ravageur or Kiehl's. Sillage and longevity are average. Masculine all the way. BTW, SWMBO loves it.

This was my go-to fragrance for several years. This is a bit like your favorite, worn-in piece of clothing: comforting and nostalgic. I feel like this is an autumnal scent that you should wear with a sweater.

this is a good all-purpose splash-on lotion with old-time seafaring vibes. works in any climate but these typically do very well in warmer climates so you can't really go wrong.

This is like old spice with less powderyness and a bit of a ambrettolide type vegetal creamy musk. I had to add some extra musks to the bottle to get the depth of musk I wanted

To me it opens with a strong cola vibe then calms down to be an absolutely amazing musk. I love this so much I can live inside a bottle. Elegant, manly, retro-style.

I love good musk fragrances, but I do NOT like for them to be skanky or too powdery. And I have found that a good number of less expensive ones are actually better for me than Musc Tonkin-types that are whopping expensive for what they are. Royall Muske fills the bill for me and it is a shame I resisted trying it for so long. It is fresh, bracing, spicy (spice along the lines of Old Spice which I love). Such a sexy, masculine musk that wears gorgeously on me, an ultra-feminine gal. My skin amplifies the very best aspects of musky and/or woody masculine fragrances. This is the perfect yang to complement my yin. There is something of V&R Spicebomb here, but this is smoother to me. I am okay with Spicebomb, but I LOVE this. It layers so well over woody/ambergris fragrances such as Linari Fuoco Infernale; I cannot even believe how fantastic they smell together, excellent for cool weather. But on its own in the summer, Royall Muske cannot be beat for fresh, sexy and aromatic musk.

A hidden gem of a masculine musk scent. I found a heavy glass bottle of a 4 fl oz splash. It has tester stamped on the bottle and the cap was a black screw on, different than the pictures of this shown above. Royall Muske It is a delightful fragrance. I am not sure if this is a vintage bottle or something more recent so I could not comment on if there is a difference? This smells wonderful and I enjoyed using it after shaving as a splash on. A couple of nice comments at work. a very friendly fragrance with a sweet/ spicy musk smell. I actually prefer the smell of this more than my Kiels. I would reach for this first. If you enjoy Musk fragrances this is worth checking out , not sure on how easy it is to sample? I am thinking of trying some of Royall's others such as Royall Lime which sounds so appealing during summer. I miss the splash on fragrances sometimes. Two thumbs up and not a bad value.

Musk bomb. Musk for days.Forget Musc Ravageur. This is the real musk ravishment. It's a manly masculine man man smell! It made me think of men who spend most of their free time in the woods hunting deer and other game. It's a hunter's scent. The musk is very strong. Nothing but musk. As such it's a musk version of what a soliflore (or single flower scent) is to flowers. Because musk is a base note in many fragrances this is basically one huge base note. It lasts for days. A guy I like wears this and I asked him what he was wearing. On me it's too masculine but it doesn't matter. It's sexy and like the way it smells. It's like laying in bed after having gone hunting. I suppose it's meant to evoke King Louis the 14th after a hunt. This is like a more intense pure musk version of Bal a Versailles. Unwashed but perfumy. Love it.

Of the modern Royall Bermuda lineup, this is the only one which I can strongly recommend and is suitable for men of all ages. Royall Muske is by far the best formulated of the bunch. I like to tell people this is the "eau de parfum" edition of Old Spice. Its opening burst of citrus, musk and nutmeg seems hauntingly familiar, yet never identical to Shulton Co.'s legendary brew, while remaining a bit more contemporary and "under the radar". Longevity is reasonable, as is the price. You need to be careful to consider your skin chemistry with musk fragrances. For me, the dry down creates a sensuous powdery yet "animal" vibe which, of course, is the musk extract itself. On several occasions in college, I had girls practically clawing at me after they caught the smell downwind. Use at your own risk ;)

I love Musk fragrances..with that being said ..Royall Muske is one of the Best money can buy...Barbershop Musk ..That smells so Manley that you really will need to leave your ego at the door.....Alpa male ..women drooling all over themselves to move in for A closer sniff fragrance... Its A tamed down version of my all time Favorite Musk on Steroids Fragrance Penhaligons Racquets... Which is now discontinued, and if you are reading this and have A bottle of Racquets.. I will Trade you anything for it!!.. Or buy it from you.....Just message me.. I will continue to use this as A replacement for Racquets for Now.... Royal Muske 9/10........Because Racquets is Better... otherwise its A 10 Now get out of my way... I have to go and retrieve my ego I left at the door...

This is a Legendary Cologne. I remember after growing up in san francisco and graduating from high school in 1978. I went on to work for a bank downtown while going to college. I would always venture into the Macy's downtown to shop for clothing. I needed a new suit and in the suit dept, 4 fragrances from this company were on the counter at the cash register check out. I smelled this one and knew i had to have it. This is one of the first fragrances i remember buying out of my own pocket. Here it is 2014 and now im reacquainting myself with it by buying a FB. A classic to say the least.

Royall Musk suffers a bit from excessive soapiness at the start, but its neon-lit astringency rapidly warms and sweetens as a generous dose of powdery musk wells up from the heart. After three minutes on skin, this basic sweet musk note is there to stay. Very little complexity and almost no movement beyond a quick one-step, but to be honest, it smells good. Nothing amazing here, but it's definitely something for fans of masculine barbershop musk.

Royall Muske is a very 'old world'cologne.This has a soap & water topnote which is reminiscent of 18th century English gentlemen who would not be seen in public view without a smooth clean shave and a dab of refreshing cologne. As is wears the muskiness developes and settles on the skin into a very well mannered perfume.A true cologne of grace and politeness, as a gentleman never intends to offend.

This smells like a man, a hug, like hugging a man you are in love with, sweet rum, musk. Musk and rum..just perfect. It smells like a man, possibly his sweet sweat, of a man after a shower, and having him hold you. Musky, rum, fresh, sweet, masculine, it is just sexy, I wish there was a stronger potency like EDT or EDP.

This musk is very masculin. It's not raw or gross. It's actually very soft, but it suits more a well-mannered gentleman rather than an elegant damsel. Musk, musk, musk is all I smell here. I didn't know it was the only note listed! It's not offensive, but it would be better not to overdo.

I smelled it today at Whole Foods Market. It's a very simple scent. It's clean, powdery and slightly sweet; almost like a Johnson&Johnson baby powder. It doesn't smell old but it's timeless. In some way, it's perfect fit in CLEAN product line.

I use this as a base layer. I share it with my husband. I also bought him the Brooks Brothers 19whatever. I love love love it
