Onyx

Onyx is my anti-depressant. Seriously. I keep one in my bag, and one on my nightstand in it’s pretty little washi-paper covered tube, and lunge for it like a starved animal on a rib-eye whenever The Sad Man peeks his nasty little head round the corner. I’m on my 11th bottle, and had to contact Sage while I was still in L.A., to get a U.K. connection to feed my need of it, and I use it so copiously, I need kegs of it, not ounces. It's such a simple little symphony with its six notes, but I'm telling you, if it lasted longer on my skin, I could ditch my shrink. LOVE MY ONYX! Warm, sweet, smokey Prozac w/o the side effects.

I'm with alittlebrittle; Onyx is an antidepressant! There is something both comforting and energizing about this exquisite, masterful oil blend. I cannot think of any other perfume that blends coconut with oakmoss, let alone coconut with oakmoss AND tobacco. The combination is brilliant, and Onyx, like all other Sage Machado fragrances, is severely underrated.

Misterious, musky coconut. Not a sweet coconut, but a very discreet and sexy one. Interesting, I feel like I need this.

I love this scent, but everytime I wear it someone will ask "what smells like play-doh?"...really?? UGH!

So far, I am a big fan of the Sage Machado oils; I have already purchased three of them after trying samples. They last forever, and are really strong, you don't need much. This is no exception! The oils don't change too much; the black coconut and moss are the most potent of Onyx (by the end of the day, the moss is still pretty strong.) It's a heavy, smoky-sweet perfume, NOT beachy or even tropical - don't be fooled by the vanilla and coconut! This is too heavy for the heat. Well-blended and balanced, the different notes work together well. Great scent.

This is one for the lovers on non-sweet coconut. It's very creamy with a tiny hint of bitterness. On my skin, musk is the star and that's why I ended up taking this one off my want list. A soft, vanilla tinged white musk. I personally do not feel a strong presence of tobacco or get any real smokiness. It's a cozy scent, but I've smelled variations on this theme before. Still, definitely worth checking out if you like creamy musks.

Straight up suntan oil with a hint of oakmoss. Boring. Not what I was hoping for. Unsophisticated. Smells basic and a little trashy. Kind of like a beach girl just made out with a dude and his cheap cologne mixed with her suntan oil.

In my quest for a sophisticated coconut, I had heard good things about this, so I blind bought it. So disappointed... it starts out smelling exactly like a coconut car air freshener...stays that way for about an hour, then transforms into a cheap, powdery skin scent with a hint of sweat (I like the hint of sweat!), before fading away into nothing. Really disappointed in this.

Despite most saying that it wasn't a beachy coconut in this one, I gave it a go and found that it's almost exactly like Kuumba Made Black Coconut to my nose. Aside from the vanilla note in Sage's version, and it being a little more spicy/ mature and with more of a musk coming through it's really hard to distinguish the two. I do find this coconut to smell tropical, which is what I was hoping wouldn't happen. I left it for another hour after applying to see if I could distinguish any other notes, and the coconut note was still just about the only thing I could pick out, and it was almost giving me a headache but other vegan oil fragrance ranges similar to this have not given me this issue, and I don't think it's anything to do with these formulations, rather I think I was just tired of smelling nothing but coconut. Sadly I didn't get anything else except for more musk as it mellowed out as others seemed to have gotten more. Sillage is good as my husband was smelling it quite a bit in the room but not too much so. Longevity is pretty good but I can't be too accurate as it was on for about an hour and a half before I took a shower, then it's remnants were still there in a very calming way when I'd smell my wrist. I'd say sillage is 6/10 and longevity is 7/10. Probably one of Sage's longest lasting ones imo, and also from what I've heard. I'm definitely going to be trying more Sage oils. I think the staying power would be just what I need.

Sage Machado Onyx. This fragrance, like the stone, is an under-appreciated delight. For all the frequent mentions of coconut, Onyx is primarily a dark, opaque, tobacco scent, and one that stays rich and stately, avoiding the unfortunate sour turn of iPF's Tobacco, and miles away from the harsh, over-done pseudo-complexity of Aramis Havana. Sage Machado Onyx's tobacco is softened, surrounded in cottony down by a lady with gentle fingers, and then carefully placed into a packing crate padded with shredded coconut husk. This isn't suntan lotion coconut, and it's not the sweet flakes from a macaroon. It's the coir, the husks, the earthier essence of coconut, and it compliments, not overpowers. The vanilla also avoids any foodie associations, letting the oakmoss and musk show it how to live a meaningful, productive adult life away from the bakery and teeny-bopper toiletries. I'm giving away no secrets to say that this absolutely one of my favorite frags ever, and that House Machado is at the top of my list in general. With that said - Onyx stands out as a misunderstood scent - years of mass-market foodie frags have tainted it with stereotyped expectations. Let go of those expectations and let yourself indulge.

This is much, much, much milder than I expected. I was awaiting something strong, rich, heady, dark... On me Onyx is pretty light, really, simple and "natural" and very...well straightforwardly..."coconuty". It actually reminds me of the coconuty smell of Gorse (some people don't seem to be able to detect the smell of those and in my own experience the plant only smells extremely strongly of coconut at times and/or in some places). There may be a hint of tobacco and vanilla somewhere in Onyx, but that's about it. To me its nice, but very simple coconut with a touch of earthiness.

I only wear natural fragrances even though the lasting power is compromised and I tend to go for more potent spicy scents. It’s been challenging to find a natural fragrance that suits my aesthetic, but sage onyx comes very close. It’s perfect when layered and alone it’s exquisire, but light. The tobacco and moss go beautifully with the coconut. It is not cloying at all. Musky and earthy, but also elegant. One of my favorites.

Hmm... I really liked this when I first applied it. It was kinda foody, warm coconut. Not sugary sweet, more musky and soft. Almost in a milk chocolatey sort of way. Loved that for about an hour. Then it turned spicey, the drydown actually reminded me a lot of Obsession. No more coconut, no more creamy goodness, just SPICE. Not for me.
