Salvador by Salvador Dali (1992)

salvador was released after the death of the great genious salvador dalì, but im happy to say this is a great tribute to one of my favourite artists ever. i definitely get the similarities with ralph lauren safari(cosmair version), they have many things in common like the mossy-aldehydes vibe, a soft leather undertone with a touch of barbeshop feel. if safari is denser, more "orangy" and macho, salvador with its beautiful citrus opening is brighter, joyful, "yellow", elegant and yet masculine. this fragrance is very early-90's, it reflects the change in the parfumery during that period, so it can be a bit dated for someone but in my opinion is one of the best vintage ever. i also prefer this to salvador dalì pour homme, released few years before. that one is a great blend but it's hard to wear nowadays. salvador instead is still a great edt that stands the test of time, very good for spring, early summer and fall. for formal and casual situations, the performance is good, not a beast but not weak for sure. fantastic presentation as well. viva salvador!!! salvador by salvador dalì è uscito dopo la morte del grande genio ma per fortuna il prodotto in questione è un grande tributo ad uno degli artisti più influenti di sempre. molto simile a ralph lauren safari(cosmair version), hanno in comune un delicato muschio di quercia e un cuoio non cupo ma luminoso, con un tocco barbeshop anni 90. salvador è però più agrumato, più casual e solare, là dove safari è un pochino più macho. uno dei miei vintage preferiti! scent-8,5 longevity-8 sillage-7 uniqueness-8 versatility-7,5 presentation-9 compliment factor-7 back up bottle?yes my vote-8,5 in one word- joya alternative- ralph lauren safari(vintage), ettore bugatti pour homme by diana de silva.

I've been holding off for a long time to sniff this creation from Antony Gerard (who was also behind the two great aromatic fougeres: Azzaro PH and Balenciaga PH), but I finally found a bottle for a reasonable price (not easy these days as this is becoming increasingly scarce). Salvador definitely hails from that very-unique period in mainstream perfumery that occurred in the early 90's, in the few years after Cool Water was introduced, when minimalist and softer unisex fragrances were starting to be introduced and take hold (revolutionizing the market and giving the 90's its increasingly fresh-fruity flavor), but, as you know, men's fashions don't change quite-as-quickly as women's, and this is true for fragrances as well: there were still many aromatic fougeres being released, and this was one of them. But, unlike those of the previous decade, this one (like Giorgio Beverly Hills Red for Men) contained a fair amount of calone to keep up with the times a bit and navigate the new, watery world that was unfolding: spices, green herbs, a carefully-balanced accord of carnation and rose in its beautiful, lilting heart that gracefully employs the freshness of calone... and a traditional base with plenty of oakmoss and leather... it immediately- though this is my first-ever sniff- brings me back to those blissful years before the internet exploded and house music was in full tilt. Salvador is giving me "a moment"... and I must now excuse myself to blissful nostalgia-

Salvador by Salvador Dali is a delicious blend of spices, flowers, and leather, with a sweet fruity touch (that of pear, or apple, peel), which is very masculine and classy. At times, you can also perceive an extremely pleasant, subtle tobacco accord. Salvador is in a similar vein to Safari by Ralph Lauren and Jazz by Yves Saint Laurent. It sports a very elegant, non-rigid aura. In my opinion, its aroma is timeless, with greater potential in autumn and winter--it would perform well on a summer night or a cool spring day, though. It also has very good longevity (8-10 hours on skin) and great projection and sillage, qualities that have been greatly overlooked by perfume houses today. I am surprised that Salvador has been discontinued as it is, in my opinion, better and more versatile than the legendary Salvador Dali Pour Homme; in addition, it wouldn't pass off as an "old guy's scent" nowadays. For that same reason, it is a fragrance that I consider criminally underrated and, therefore, deserves more recognition from perfume lovers. As a detail, I've noticed this perfume doesn't belong to a specific olfactory group, but, to me, this can be classified as a spicy leather. I think that's all for now. I'm finally reunited with this gem. Had this in the aftershave version in the early nineties, and recently bought a 100 ml bottle of the EDT, which is even better. So much going on here. It transitions several profiles throughout. Beautiful, soapy, leathery smell with spicy overtones. Like someone else noted, it can also show a hint of tobacco at times. I personally could smell something akin to BO as well (probably the carraway shining through), however in the best possible way. This is certainly a mans perfume. If I would look for something negative, I find that it doesn't last very long on my skin. Not a big problem, I will be decanting to a small atomiser for reapplying. The biggest problem will be that I ́ll have to be careful not to use it too much as it's hard to get by. But I really want to use it all the time now.

This is excellent. Very long lasting, great projection, very non-linear - going from aromatic citrus to more honey/leathery over the course. It has a pepperiness to it which is very dry and it's a very solar fragrance, very bright. It reminds me of Catalonia, the home of Dali. This is the best fougere I have smelled, I consider it to be underrated, possibly because it fits into a dated period of 80s fougeres. It's every bit as well composed as Azzaro pour homme, but a lot more unusual uplifting. The bottle is stunning - honeycombed glass, embossing, date on the bottom. My favourite bottle in my collection, and one of the only scents I would give 10/10, in a collection of around 100.

This isn't quite a chypre, but it's very chypre-like: it's also got a lot of leather and nice florals and spices. This reminds me of the old original formulation of Safari for Men, but it's beefier, and the aldehydes in this help it project more. It doesn't seem to have much to do with the popular understanding of Salvador Dali particularly (there's nothing strange or surreal about it), and instead just seems like one of that series of really superb masculines fragrances from the 80s and early 90s with dozens of different notes carefully balanced around the leather note. It's been discontinued, but you are likely to find it online for a fairly reasonable price.

Though released in early 90s, it's a powerhouse in tradition of great eighties. I bought it for a song in the bottom shelf of a discount counter recently and am really loving it. Though a bit harsh on top, it settles down to a wonderful spicy/floral dry down. Most accessible of all Dali Pour Hommes for my olfactory receptors and one of best in my collection. I only use few sprays on my arms at night and feel myself in the concord lounge. I believe in sharing but not Dali Pour Homme, a fragrance only for me which I don't want to broadcast. I had never been so possessive through my entire life.

Delicious one! In my opinion, it kind of smelled like pear peel (Am I crazy?); it was really long-lasting and had good sillage. I got this back in 1993, when my mother gave it to me for Christmas that year. It's a pity this fragrance no longer exists.

Salvador is so magnifique! Perhaps the best design from Dalí's House. I just love the scent that match your skin into a blend of spicy leather and wood with a touch of tobacco. Too masculine and sexy as well!!! Beautiful and elegant bottle.

I bought 6 years ago, and I left in a corner. A few days ago I found again .... it's fantastic! It is a harmony of scents and longevity on my skin is 4-5 hours. Just one word ... fantastic! Too bad no one can find.

Bright, optimistic, classy. Much in same way as Aigner Statement, Boss Spirit and Julio Iglesias Only. Superb aldehydes make this smell like a fresh autumn morning. Brilliant.

This smells like your dad. Super nice, old school frag. Longevity is weak (3-4 hrs) but that's not a deal breaker for me. 8/10

Lemon or lime blast, then now we get some herbal and spicy things going on, coriander, cinnamon, cardamom, maybe even mint or clarysage, clove or allspice, wintergreen maybe. Wintergreen vanilla. Now up come some woods. Unique. I quite like it. Definately spicy. I like that is it not really sweet. This would not be for everyone. You need to like cloves to like this one. This would fit well into a natural scene like walkiing in the woods and I bet a fire in the background would set this off also. This would suite a ski lodge also.

Realy nice and classic one. I realy like this genre of perfume. This fits perfectly in it. Nice and aromatic. Not to heavy and not to soft. Perfect. And the bottle is nice too ;)

This is like Boss Spirit without the main orange note and better. You don't need to search or give too much money for this, Dunhill British Leather is a clone. 7.5/10

My husband's favorite. On him it smells fresh and natural, not "perfumey." It is very elegant and smart.

A truly, truly terrible perfume :( I have a mini from long ago and never liked it. It's somehow weird fruity and spicy like some food, but woody too. I can't imagine how anyone can pull this. And no, my mini is not off, it always smelled like this. I like strange perfumes like Iquitos but this is a disaster, sorry to all the devoted fans.

I don't get much patchouli or cedar, and it's a little sweet, but it seems to have quite a bit of oakmoss. I think I'm getting a little leather, but there is definitely a pine-like quality, perhaps "green notes," spices, and the wood notes listed are doing this. There is also clearly a floral aspect, though I don't get a specific floral note pushing its way to the fore. This is quite nice, perhaps best suited to a formal event involving something joyous, like a wedding. This is very different from the first Dali fragrance for men, so don't let that scare you off. Instead, this is blended just right, one of the greats from that incredible late 70s to early 90s period in men's fragrance history. UPDATE: Several hours in and it does take on a woody quality. UPDATE #2: Wearing it today; it's been at least a couple months since the last one. Now the "green notes" (seems like galbanum), wood notes, and florals and working together very nicely, creating an almost fig-like presentation. It's a little powdery and almost nutty. Too bad Chanel hasn't made a "masculine" scent like this one in recent years! If you like scents such as Egoiste, this is one to try; it's got that rich, complex, entirely natural feel that you expect in the best modern perfumery has to offer. If Egoiste is for the winter and Minotaure is for late Spring or early summer, this one is for early Spring.

Now, this is the way to do a cumin (body odor) accord! The caraway note. That is, carefully. Judiciously. Artfully. I typically hate the cumin-esq accord because it smells like dried sweat body odor. Check out my Fragrantica review comment for Cartier Declaration and you'll get the idea. But Salvador uses it so well that I think, dare I say, it might actually have enhanced this fragrance! It's like a spicier, more Aromatic Ralph Lauren Safari, a fragrance I love and have placed high up in my favorites collection. These two close cousins in scent profile came out the same year, and probably used the 1988 YSL Jazz for inspiration.Just take a pinch of Cartier Declaration (not too much!) and add it to Safari and you are almost all the way to Salvador. They both have that gritty, earthy coriander note. Very nice! Although the performance of all three of these scent profile relatives leaves a lot to be desired. Also, the atomizer on this bottle is the worst I've ever experienced. It's like its broke or something. Juice dribbles out. I have to spray dozens of times at close distance to get enough. Anyone else experience this?

This is one of the greatest leather scents ever, to the point that its accord was used in modern perfumery, pretty much exactly the same (With naturally different side nuances) in CH Men Privé, by Carolina Herrera, just sweetened and spiced up. Anyway, i've got an early 90's bottle of this that my mom bought for my dad when they married, around '95. The bottom says "1991", so i'm guessing this was the production date. The aldehydes on this one seem spoiled since the molecules are easily damaged with oxygen and heat, but the opening developed some nice, aromatic, tarragon and coriander opening notes with a citrus backbone. (IE: It's not sour!!!) On the heart, i note the florals and a touch of cinnamon, and the leather / oakmoss combo sits in the base above everything else. Extremely classy, refined, yet versatile. Could see this work with a sports jacket in almost any climate. As a bottom line, one of the greatest leathers ever. A pity that it's not available anymore. Will have to try that Dunhill... There was this interesting trend where early 90s men's fragrances started to include this mulled spice vibe. It is subtly detected in Balenciaga Pour Homme and is readily apparent in favorites such as Bogart Witness and Aubusson Pour Homme, with the suggestion of apple pie that is undeniably delicious and provides a contrast to the mossy, leathery backbone of these compositions. Here, we encounter the same vibe with Salvador, except it is more of a poached pear that accompanies the bright verdance, the aldehydes, the punchy tarragon, and yes, oakmoss and leather. Of course pear doesn't appear as a note, but the impression must result from the sum of the components used in this delightful scent. I acquired this at the perfect time, late September, as it is decidedly autumnal; a honeyed glow and harvested fruit; earthy, wistful decay coming from the oakmoss, patchouli, and leather; the warm hug of resins, vanilla, and tonka in the dry down. Another sadly discontinued gem.

Salvador by Salvador Dali is an easy grab for uncomplicated days, and as Chris from ScentLand perfectly summed up, it's like sunshine in a bottle - I could not agree more. It's easy going and carefree, perfect for taking an aimless walk on a warm autumn day full of sunshine. As several have already noted, there is a close resemblance to Ralph Lauren's Safari, both having been released in 1992. I sprayed both on my wrist to test, and while they definitely resemble each other, Safari is more subdued and less lively (at least the modern formulation), whereas Salvador is sharper, spicier, and has more depth stemming from its rose and amber notes. I enjoy both, with Salvador being the more casual of the two. Score: 8.5 out of 10 Would I purchase a replacement bottle? Yes, but only at a reasonable price.

An exceptional and seriously underrated masterpiece. It reminds me of Alain Delon - Possibly Samurai Or Shogun , I owned both in the past but many years ago - very herbal with a pronounced cumin note. On my skin, because I eat a lot of spicy food The reaction gives off That sweaty bo vibe. However, if I use it sparingly on the skin and then layer it with Boucheron EDP or Patou edt it simply shines - I have recently and gratefully acquired the EDP version In the metallic silver bottle. Oh my gosh, this is almost identical to Jazz In the black-and- White plastic container - I would even class it as Jazz EDP Even though EDP For men wasn’t thought of back then. The EDT is Great, but the EDP is well worth every penny if you can find it , Pure class and none of the cumin - It’s just perfectly balanced

I bought a lot of 5 miniatures while I was looking for other fragrances. At the time, I was interested in Gourmands and I put this one away. I just pulled it out and thought to give it a try. It's nicer than I remember it to be. It starts off with a sweet and spicy floral burst, a little stinging up close. When it begins to settle, I can pick out the rose, the cinnamon, and musk. At the heart, there is a hint of leather, which helps to soften it further. It is a natural smelling and pleasant scent. The combination of notes, especially the florals, makes it a somewhat refined and elegant scent. Certainly not too tame to make your presence known. The sillage is great. I don't know about longevity yet, but from what other reviews have written, it lasts several hours.

I love this. IMO this is the absolute best way leather as a parfum note can be worked. Like fine suede, similar to the leather style in Hermes' Bel Ami and CH Men Privé. Bright aromatic pop in the opening, i get mainly the coriander seed which gives me kind of a champagne vibe alla OG Chanel Egoiste. Then i get the tiniest bit of florals and spices in the heart, typical of a chypre, and the aromatic leather above all. Buttery, iron-y natural oakmoss behind, slight amber, barely there, woods, et cetera. My dad wore this but i stole his flacon since he seemed to enjoy more other things. I'll wear this until i kill the 20ml i have left.

Magnificent! Sadly they don't make them like this anymore, what a Gem! It has a unique herbal note that sets it apart, similar to the way that Sergio tacchinni has a herbal note that's unique to it , and I really I like both of them. The older I get the further back my taste in cologne is going as well, I really love the 70s 80s and early 90s

I like leather , I love spices , I love intense perfumes : I enjoy Salvador and wear it although it is a bit too masculine for a woman ( who often wears masculines ) . Better suited to cool weather as it is a loud , warm and rich fragrance . I find it much more on the exuberant side than elegant .

It's greatest men perfume from this house. Top note open with lot of pepper and may be strong in first sniff. But leave it 10 minutes, its turn to elegant and make you feel like business man in 30 years old. So sad it's discontinued. Scent: 4.5/5 Longlast: 4/5

My favourite frag for this spring/summer season. Sharp and spicy, refreshing yet long lasting, its quality can't be beaten by today's designers' bottles. A vintage jewel, grab one while you can.
