#116 of My Fragrance Journey - Santa Maria Novella Alba di Seoul: The city was a ghost. I was the jolt. 4 AM Seoul. Streets damp and paused, like the city forgot what it was doing. I didn't wait for it to remember. Hit the atomiser and the world went electric. It wasn't a fragrance at first. It was impact. Sharp, acid-green bergamot - all juice, zero sugar - cutting through cold air like something with intent. Then nutmeg. Dry, gritty, giving the whole thing physical weight. Not a garden. More like stepping into a coniferous forest before the sun's finished the job. Resinous. Cold. Vibrating at a frequency you feel in your chest before you name it. I forgot the pavement. The city blurred. Just a pulse moving through digital woods. The half-hour walk changed it, but only slightly. Lavender came in - and forgot the barbershop. This was metallic, atmospheric, the kind of cold that comes off glass at night. Violet like crushed neon leaves, powdery in a way that felt more like static than petals. You don't pick these apart. You just... inhabit them. It's a bassline, not a melody. Steady. Driving. Completely unbothered by whether you're paying attention. Hours in, something shifted - neon to gold, barely perceptible. Cedarwood came through dry and architectural. Patchouli underneath, but stripped clean, none of the earth, none of the murk. It didn't pull me out. It just pushed me deeper into the quiet. Here's the honest part, though. It's a loop. A beautiful, intentional one - but a loop. The same green-woody beat, cycling. In the wrong weather, it can feel like a rave that went an hour too long. But in the in-between - rainy afternoon, late-summer 5 AM, the commute nobody else is on - it's exactly right. Doesn't need a plot twist. Chooses a state and stays there. That's the thing about Alba di Seoul. It doesn't evolve because it doesn't have to. Vibe: Coniferous forest inside a moving train. Cold light, no destination. Performance: 7–8 hours, moderate projection, dries closer and closer to skin as the hours pass - in a good way. Fit: You wear this when you're already certain of where you're going, and you don't need the scent to explain it for you. I purchased a bottle of this magnificent fragrance from the original Santa Maria Novella in Florence. It was a hot day in Mediterranean April and it was crowded. I couldn't stop smelling the elegant porcelain tester and the middle aged clerk, Simone, told me that she thought it was interesting I was so drawn to this scent, as it felt to her like the cleaner, lighter, more summer-appropriate cousin to Tobacco Toscano (which I had mentioned was a particular favorite of mine). On a recent trip to Florence, I paid pilgrimage to the original Farmacia di Santa Maria Novella. It was a hot late afternoon in Mediterranean April and the building was crowded with couples of all ages. Repeatedly, I found myself drawn to the porcelain tester for Alba di Seoul—addicted to its clean airiness, its summery nostalgia, the memories and feelings it evoked in me. I told the middle aged clerk, Simone, that this fragrance was beautiful. I told her that Tobacco Toscano was one of my favourites. It was interesting, she said, that I would be so drawn to Alba, which she described as TT's lighter, more heat-appropriate cousin. This is the most apt description of this cologne. In comparison to TT's moody romanticism, with its evocative expression of velvet drapes and tailored smoking jackets—Maxim DeWinter watching the sea from a library—Alba calls to mind the crisp tang of white and blue tile. It carries over the woodiness in the trapped memory of rain on mulch. I recall nostalgic fantasies from my childhood on Cape Cod; of walking barefoot on sandy feet past the back porch, hosing off salt water and sun beneath a tap-cold outdoor shower and putting on cool, clean clothes. This fragrance's ability to hack into my sensory subconscious is astounding; I am immediately transported to a tranquil landscape dominated by cool breezes and the sobs of mourning doves at dusk. On women this might be boring; in many ways it borders on a melon-cucumber soap. It is because of that almost generic femininity that I think this fragrance becomes so exciting on men, and is the reason I bought it to wear. It really evokes that clean, sun-warm, fresh-out-of-the shower smell that I find so erotic on a man; the kind of scent that makes you want to go out to a nice dinner on a terrace somewhere.

I really just got this as a souvenir visiting the Santa Maria Novella main store in Florence, near the train station. The experience of being in that old Oficina was incredible. The smells, the history, the decor...all wonderful. Of course I tried many of the Eau de Colognes they had on offer. Usually, if it's an EdC it's not going to be a buy for me considering the value for money. But for SMN I make an exception due to the history and how cute the bottles are. I tried Tabacco Toscano, which was nice, dry, and had an almost acrid quality to it. It was quite strong to my surprise. But then I tried Alba di Seoul, and for some reason it captured me as being the most modern and appealing scent in the SMN line up. The vast majority of their scents are quite old school, barbershop or otherwise "room spray" scents. Alba di Seoul is a fresher and more modern take on an EdC that isn't just a blast of citrus. This is quite soapy, almost on the limit of being too much, but there's also a nice melon accord in here that is fresh. Like if you are eating a cold melon on a hot day. I get the "Seoul" vibe in this, as there is something distinctly "Asian" feeling about this fragrance. The 50ml bottle I got is so cute. If you are in Florence going to SMN is a Top 5 must do, including David, Uffizi, Duomo and Ponte Veccio.

The pyramid currently listed here on Fragrantica differs significantly from the official brand website. According to the manufacturer, the fragrance is officially classified as a Spicy Fougère, not an Oriental Woody. The official notes are: Top Notes: Bergamot, Nutmeg Middle Notes: Violet Leaves, Lavender, Jasmine Base Notes: Patchouli, Amber, Cedarwood, Musk It might be worth keeping this in mind when voting on the "Perfume Pyramid" section, as the official pyramid suggests a much more aromatic and woody-floral character than what is currently displayed.

I fell in love with this perfume as soon as I smelled it, back in the Officina Santa Maria Novella in Florence. A modern scent, very fresh, very green, very sophisticated: a unisex fragrance that will surely make you feel quite put together. It doesn't last too long but I don't mind it! It ends up feeling personal, as if the scent radiated from your own skin. It isn't particularly woody to me, but it definitely is quite green: I also find its name to be perfect for this fragrance.

Another highend Aman spa in middle of woods. This reminds me of woody garden tour when i traveled in Castel Gandolfo (summer resthouse of Santo Papa outside Roma). I dont think this is leaning towards men. Its super gender neutral. When you collect perfumes & testing a lot of boozy & sickly cloying gourmande scents in 2025, you'll get fed up & search for most alluring yet clean scent. No wonder nuns are living in way of life that is pure holy, meditative & simple.

Came to Florence and tried out many of the fragrances they had and ended up getting this one as a souvenir. I enjoyed this one as it felt like a refined modern fragrance from this historic house. While many may not be as intrigued by its newer smelling dna I found the pine notes to be very crisp and intriguing. This is definitely a departure from many of the other more classic scents.

Just tested it today in Nose Paris, and among all the (numerous) samples I tested in my search for "Allure homme" kind of scents -fresh yet sweet and not the typical fresh ones-, this one was of the 3 that I took a sample of. It's a bummer it's so light and fades out quickly... 8/10

I love Alba di Seoul!! It’s my favorite of all the SMN fragrances! I don’t find it masculine or aftershave-like at all—it’s def unisex. It’s beautiful, modern, + clean-smelling, sort of like Byredo Gypsy Water.

The top notes smell a little like a traditional men's aftershave. The top green notes smell like melon. The heart becomes more unisex. The pine is lovely and serene, but this is not a dry cologne like I expected. It is deliciously balsamic and moderately sweet, as though they used more pine sap than pine needles, which helps to bring some femininity to an otherwise masculine cologne. There is no mention of fruit anywhere in the notes, but I distinctly smell sweet red berries. This is another perfume where I get vivid images of a dark coniferous forest. It contains a good dose of spice, but the spice is not ticklish like black pepper. It smells like ginger, nutmeg, and clove. The spice blend seems to develop or intensify with time. The beautiful sweet pine resin blended with freshly baked gingerbread is music to my nose! This perfume reminds me very much of Del Rae's Bois de Paradis, except Alba di Seoul leans into the men's aftershave category with the quasi-aquatic green top notes. It's fairly strong for a cologne and will not fade into oblivion an hour after application. It is indeed a cologne, with a refreshing and translucent quality, yet the raw materials used are very rich. I would definitely recommend Alba di Seoul for men, but I would suggest that ladies sample before buying. This hauntingly beautiful cologne will be a pleasure to wear during the holiday season.

Notes on the website, as it seems to be lacking a number of key notes here, and I think it would lead people to expect a completely different scent. Top: Bergamot, Nutmeg Middle: Violet Leaves, Lavender, Jasmine Base: Patchouli, Amber, Cedarwood, Musk I purchased his after a trip to the store in Florence. I was torn between this and Angeli di Firenze, but ultimately picked this up. I'd say this is like Angeli di Firenze's big sister. It's starts off super fresh and bright, maybe even a little sparkling. As it drys down, it gets a bit creamy and soft, to something quite sophisticated. If I was to attach this to a moment, and forgive the poetics, this smells like a hot summer day, when you're getting the smell of something sweet in the breeze. It's quite a gentle scent. Unless you douse yourself, its not going to punch you in the face.

This was light and not long lasting on me. Very clean and fresh. I got pine and soap bar. Didn’t vary much for me start to finish. There is a place for light fragrances and perhaps this is one that you could wear when you don’t really want to wear much. Yet, I never once caught a whiff of it on several days of wear. Not noticed by anyone else. There are other fragrances houses (Byredo, Diptyque) loved by others, that just don’t give me much. This is my first from this perfumer so I’ll have to try again.

I once bought this for my ex-boyfriend. This fragrance reminds me of a pine tree forest in a rainy day.

I am fan of many Santa Maria Novella fragrances, so I recently blind-bought Alba di Seoul as part of a larger order. Based on the description of the scent and the note pyramid, I expected a green, pine-focused scent. Instead, as others have noted below, I got a calone-heavy, pseudo-melon opening that could have been lifted from any one of dozens of generic, down-market designer fragrances. The pine in the heart is very nice and the base is long-lived and more pleasant than the opening. The fact that this scent gets better as the progression wears on redeems the product a bit and keeps it from being hopelessly disappointing. But apart from the fleeting heart note, this fragrance is a symphony of synthetic smelling aromachemicals that struggle to coalesce into a coherent whole. This mainstream, 21st century scent seems to me to be at odds with the image of retro, traditional, natural fragrances that the house projects with its much touted history and charming packaging. It is not that the fragrance is bad--just uninteresting and, for the most part, bland. Longevity is considerable, and the base is more enjoyable for me than the opening. Projection is strong. I would say this fragrance is unisex. I will probably struggle to find occasions on which to wear this fragrance, but there is enough quality here in the heart notes that I am going to give this fragrance a chance in hot weather to see if it reveals more of the pine note or is more interesting in higher temperatures. Lovers of melon tinged, mainstream designer scents may enjoy Alba di Seoul, but it is hard to be enthusiastic about this fragrance --particularly at the prices SMN demands for its scents. There are many more interesting and enjoyable scents available from Santa Maria Novella. I suggest you first try other SMN fragrances if you are exploring this house and it's many excellent offerings.

Key words: green and fresh. It opens with a mixed scent of grass and flower, and soon the scent of pine tree comes out. In just a few minutes it creates this feeling that I am in a forest. I have to say, the heart note is more pleasant than the opening. It dries down to some woody spicy scent. In general, I like the pine tree scent a lot.

This to me smells super similar to Ferragamo Bright Leather. The opening is almost the same, and the dry down is super similar as well, except it is very slightly more woody than leather. Definitely overpriced and not unique enough, but I enjoy it.

Another good one from Novella, needs further testing.

Fresh and green, like some generic designer-range fragrance. I’m smelling more of a green pineapple note (ally amyl glycolate?) in the opening this than the lush, green pine. Dry-down is sweet, tinted with melon and white woods.

Very generic, designer-level masculine scent. If Seoul does really smell like this, it has to be a very bland city in reality

With a name like Alba di Seoul, I was expecting something atmospheric and maybe even a little poetic. But this.... I left confused and underwhelmed by this borderline soulless scent that seems to have no idea what it wants to be. The green and woody notes are in no way fresh, but sharp they sure are. Imagine someone dabbing a pungent bit of sawdust into a generic cologne then dousing it in spicy water—just blurred, unpleasantly strong, yet bland and so diluted. Scrubber territory. And if you think its crisp, forestry nature will make its appearance in due time—like I did—then you mustn't hold your breath. Things are murky all the way and honestly, you'd have better luck finding a coniferous fragrance by rubbing yourself with pine needles, no kidding. Just frail, wispy, and also persistently spiky at the same time. By the third hour, I was itching to physically remove my own skin just to get rid of the headache. This isn’t just a bad fragrance—it’s actively offensive to my nose, my patience, it's actively making assaults on my general will to live.
