Iris

I've bought it last month in Rome, and I've been told there that every SDMN perfume is unisex. As a man, I bought it, because I liked it, and I liked it more than many other offers labelled as unisex. I still believe that this perfume is more unisex, even though the floral components of violet and iris makes it to veer off to the cleaning supplies. You will then smell like a clean, washing powder. The first 15 minutes can basically smother you in the scent like a mothball. It is loud and strong, and the earthiness puts a hefty oomph to it. The linearity is clear as an edge of a Japanese knife. Then after about an hour or two it slowly dissipates, and lingers for good 4-5 hours. Your clothes will smell longer than on your skin, so beware of that. It is a clean and powdery summer scent, nice for en evening out or as an everyday perfume, just don't spray it on 10 minutes before you go to work, because then it may nauseate your colleagues. Overspraying this means abuse of your surroundings. Your pets will leave you and children may start to cry. It is that strong. nevertheless, to get to my initial point, it is an unisex perfume and not particularly feminine, and for males, layering this perfume or using it at right occasions may just work as a signal of power. In a training room or at the meeting, you will smell fresh and clean.

Im very pleased to say that I dont get the bitterness It is quite vegetal or herbally and I think its a lovely fragrance for a spring day. The violet is the star but there is some sweetness coming from somewhere. It might be rose or a herb. Yes, I get the orris root but it is used with great restraint. There is none of that heavy cold earthiness. I really dont like that. You have to handle orris root with great mastery for it to work on my skin. Moderate sillage and longevity on me. Very lovely indeed.

A glorious head-spinner of an iris, slightly green but also dark and rich. It only lasts about three hours on me and hardly projects at all, but smells incredible. I wouldn't call this a powdery or soapy fragrance--on me it's warm and deceptively complex. I suspect this gets overshadowed by other SMN scents (the scant reviews suggest so, anyway) which is a shame, because I find it stunning. Like falling into a purple sunrise.

The best iris fragrance that I own. I have the vintage/original bottle/formulation. It is strong, lasts, projects and is NOT powdery. It is a bold iris with some violet supporting it. I remember when I bought this at Santa Maria Novella in Florence and said "but irises don't have a scent." The clerk said, "Maybe not in America but here they are very fragrant. A field full of iris is a delicious scent."

Sillage pretty good, longevity very good for a cologne. It remembers me of old shady rooms, where the best furniture is kept, and that are rarely used. A very clean and comforting smell. PS _ after an hour or two it really turns very soapy, but it only increases its cleanliness. It's lovely !

This is pretty, herbal and little soapy iris scent. Stays very close to skin and remimds me of the lather of some luxury soap.Lovely creation.

It’s carrot-y iris. It’s pleasant, but I prefer iris perfumes from other brands such as Fragonard, VC&A, Chanel, etc.

a woody iris, bathed in violet, bitter and astringent that opens and closes with an eternal bergamot soap rolled in talc. Like a freshly washed item of clothing but with an antique flavour.

This is a very musky iris perfume to my nose. On initial spray it’s quite nice but the dry down is not for me. None of Santa Maria Novella perfumes are safe blind buys. I bought Angel of Florence which thankfully I did like, but I also bought Cinquanta which I'm really not keen on (happy to sell if anyone interested since I can’t return it now it’s been sprayed) I was lucky to get this and Gelsomino testers with my order. Gelsomino is a very nice but heavy jasmine/ylang-ylang scent. If you’re thinking about these perfumes, I’d definitely try and obtain samples either from eBay or in the packs they offer. The bottles and packaging is very premium and you can tell the perfumes are high quality.

Iris by Santa Maria Novella is a straightforward green iris fragrance. While it captures the classic essence of the note, it doesn’t stand out within its category. The composition feels solid but lacks the uniqueness or complexity to justify its premium price point.

Para ser sincero nem sei como começar a falar desta obra prima da perfumaria, confesso estar sem meios de iniciação na descrição desta arte. Como a maioria sabe, Santa Maria Novella é uma conhecida basílica localizada em Florença, na Itália, se não me engano, hoje já é um Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO. A história dessa Casa é impressionante, realmente Santa Maria Novella é uma farmácia em todos os sentidos da palavra, e que funciona desde 1221, e muito conhecida na terra do país do desenho da bota por Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Nuova, há mais de 700 anos. Bem, Íris de Santa Maria Novella foi criado em 1901, isso mesmo, no ano em que Guglielmo Marconi já ensaiava nossos telefones celulares, ao fazer a primeira ligação sem fio por meio do rádio; ninguém ao certo sabe quem criou a fragrância, mas cogita-se que tenha sido por algum farmacêutico que servia à Igreja na época, também em seu ano de lançamento foram lançados alguns Creed’s e Floris’s. Sua abertura é “magia negra” pura, totalmente assustadora, nuvem pesada, sensação obscura extremíssima, porém dominante, mas logo ameniza seguindo uma pequena semelhança, isso se você cheirar bem próximo ao local aplicado, a asas de baratas, associei essa loucura às raízes de Lírio sujas de terra molhada. Ainda em sua saída percebo uma pitada evidente das mesmas raízes perceptíveis no poderoso Aromatics Elixir. O tempo vai passando e o Íris, torna-se argiloso, resinoso, engrossado e mais denso, remetendo a cheiro de pó de arroz de mulher rica, um “quê” de Íris em sintonia com sabonetes finos com raspas de Cedro selvagem encontrados nas suítes máster do Hotel Burj Al Arab de Dubai. Por um momento a inebriante fragrância do Íris me remeteu às aconchegantes Casas de Essências do Pará, onde é possível se deparar com uma bela amálgama de cheiros de ervas no ambiente, misturadas a um buquê de Íris orvalhadas por mel diluído em água de folhas selvagens. Um conselho, para que não curti talco, dê uma chance a ele, porque mesmo tendo uma pequena quantidade de talco ele nos leva a um talco fino e divino, que posso descrevê-lo como: “The Best Talc!”. Pra quem ama e curti o Ambre Fetiché da Annick Goutal, tem 101% de chances de amá-lo, são primos, porém sem a doçura do primeiro, Íris é mais definido, tacaram terra gostosa nele. Abro um adendo aqui: em sua descrição constam Violetas, na minha concepção isso não é verdade, em seu final percebi apenas uma pétala de Violeta voando lá longe dentro de um tornado, somente. Resumindo, Íris de Santa Maria Novella é uma obra de arte que rasgou os séculos e nos permitiu conhecê-lo, por ser exótico, expansivo, dominador, único, inspirador, magnânimo e colossal, não é um perfume para qualquer pessoa, definitivamente. Não consigo explicá-lo da forma como pretendia e nem me atrevo a dizer o porquê exatamente, experimente e julgue. Só sei que encontrei alguém para estar próximo à minha assinatura olfativa (Cabotine). Para uma Água de Colônia, Íris dá seu recado para além do aspirado, fixa e projeta simultaneamente umas 6 hs! Tried my small decant of this scent this afternoon. It is very "iris" as expected, but more intense and sweet than anticipated. I am used to drier more mossy iris scents. This smelled very sweet to me so I did not like the topnotes but I did like the drydown. I'll give it a few more chances with my decant.

from start to finish it smells like metallic and earthy violetes, powdery (not the baby stuff) dry and clean, perfect for the summer.
